1998 Chevrolet Lumina problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.

Background

The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.

Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Common 1998 Chevrolet Lumina problems

The Chevrolet Lumina, a popular sedan produced between 1990 and 2001, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of the 1998 model. One of the most frequent issues is related to the intake manifold gaskets, which may leak coolant or engine oil. This problem can lead to engine overheating, reduced performance, and even engine failure if not addressed promptly.

Another common issue with the 1998 Chevrolet Lumina is the car's difficulty starting or cranking. This problem can be caused by various factors, including a faulty starter, alternator, battery, or ignition system. In some cases, the issue may be related to the car's anti-theft system, which can prevent the engine from starting if the system detects an unauthorized attempt to start the car.

The Lumina's engine also has a reputation for stalling or dying while driving, which can be a significant safety concern. This problem can be caused by various engine issues, including faulty ignition modules, neutral safety switches, or ignition modules.

In addition to engine and electrical issues, the 1998 Chevrolet Lumina has also been known to have problems with its cooling system. Overheating is a common complaint, which can be caused by leaks in the cooling system or a faulty thermostat.

The Lumina's fuel system can also be a source of problems, with complaints about rough running, stalling, and difficulty starting. These issues can be caused by faulty fuel injectors, clogged fuel filters, or problems with the car's fuel pump.

Finally, the 1998 Chevrolet Lumina's body and paint can also be a source of problems. Complaints about peeling paint and other body issues are not uncommon, indicating that the car's exterior may not be as durable as some owners would like.

In summary, the 1998 Chevrolet Lumina has several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include leaking intake manifold gaskets, difficulty starting or cranking, engine stalling or dying while driving, cooling system problems, fuel system issues, and body and paint problems. While these issues can be frustrating for Lumina owners, many of them can be addressed with proper maintenance and repairs.

Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?

With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.

How long can a Chevy Lumina last?

Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.

Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?

In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.

What is the value of a 98 Chevy Lumina?

The value of a used 1998 Chevrolet Lumina ranges from $261 to $920, based on vehicle condition, mileage, and options. Get a free appraisal here.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-02-19
  • VIN: 2G1WL52MXW9
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THIS PROBLEM EXISTS BWHEN THE VEHICLE IS SATIONARY AND IN TRANSIT. IT APPEARS TO BE INTERMITTEN AS WELL. MY BRAKE LIGHTS WORK WHEN I AM BRAKING, BUT THEY SEEM TO INTERMITTENLY BE FAILING WHEN I USE MY DIRECTIONAL SWITCH (4 WAY). I HAVE BEEN ADVISED ON 3 OCCASSIONS, TWICE BY SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS ARE NOT WORKING. BUT THEY DO WORK EXCEPT WHEN THE DIRECTIONALS ARE ON. AFTER SOME RESEARCH WE HAVE DISCOVERED THAT REPLACING THE 4 WAY SWITCH WILL RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. MAY I NOTE THAT I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS DEVICE FAIL IN ANY OF MY VEHICLES EVER. THAT REGARDLESS OF THE GES AND MAKES OF MY VEHICLCES THE MANUFACTURERS HAVE HAD THE GOOD SENSE TO MAKE CERTAIN THE 4 WAY SWITCH WAS RELIABLE. MIGHT I ADD LINKING BRAKING WITH THE SWITCH MIGHT BE CONSIDER IRRESPONSIBLE OF THE ENGINEERS. HAS THE 1998 CHEVY LUMINA 4WAY SWITCH BEEN RECALLED!?

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-11-12
  • VIN: 2G1WL52M9W9
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE THIS COMPANY VEHICLE BY NEW TRANSPORTATION MANAGER, EVEN THOUGH I HAD ANOTHER COMPANY VEHICLE ASSIGNED TO ME TO DRIVE. FROM 11/9/2018 TO 11/13/2018 I WORKED OVERTIME PLUS MY REGULAR WEEK OF WORK. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME USING THE HEATER IN THIS VEHICLE AND I WAS WORKING LONG HOURS WITH THE HEATER ON BECAUSE THE WEATHER HAD CHANGED. ON 11/11/2018 AT ABOUT 0600, I STARTED HAVING A HEADACHE AND MY THROAT WAS IRRITATED BUT I WENT HOME AT 0800 AND CAME BACK TO WORK OVERTIME PLUS MY REGULAR SHIFT ON THE SAME DAY AT 2000. MY HEADACHE HAD INTENSIFIED AND I TOOK ALEVE FOR IT AND DRANK MILK FOR MY IRRITATED THROAT AND WEN HOME AT THE END OF MY SHIFT AT 0800 ON 11/13/2018. I WORKED THE REST OF THE WEEK BUT MY HEADACHES CONTINUED AND ON 11/19/2018, I ASKED THE MECHANIC TO SMELL THE CABIN OF MY VEHICLE AND AFTER SMELLING IT, HE TOLD ME TO PARK IT AND REPORT IT TO MY MANAGER BECAUSE IT HAD AN EXHAUST LEAK. ON 11/26/2018, I WENT TO THE HOSPITAL AND THE DOCTOR PLACED ME ON MODIFIED DUTY UNLESS I WAS NOT PROVIDED A DIFFERENT VEHICLE TO DRIVE AND THEN I WOULD CONSIDERED TEMPORARILY FULLY DISABLED UNTIL 12/14/2018. ON 11/28/2018, MY MANAGER TOLD ME I WAS GOING TO BE DRIVING THE DIRTY VEHICLE AFTER I HAD ASKED FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE. I HAD MY SUPERVISOR SMELL THE CABIN AND HE GAVE ME HIS TRUCK TO DRIVE AND I DROVE IT FOR 2 DAYS. ON 11/30/2018, MY SUPERVISOR TOLD ME THAT OUR MANAGER HAD CLEARED THE DIRTY VEHICLE AND I HAD TO GO BACK TO DRIVING IT BUT I WENT HOME FULLY DISABLED INSTEAD. ON 12/4/2018, I WAS FORCED BACK INTO WORK AND I DROVE MY MANAGERS TRUCK. ON 12/5/2018, I DROVE THE DIRTY VEHICLE TO THE FIRE STATION AND IT TESTED POSITIVE FOR AN EXHAUST LEAK WITH CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE CABIN. I HAD MY 2 DAYS OFF AND ON 11/8 AND 11/9/2018, I HAVE BEEN STAYING AT THE OFFICE BECAUSE THEY'RE FORCING ME TO DRIVE THE DIRTY VEHICLE AGAIN AND I CAN'T GO OUT TO WORK.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-04-07
  • VIN: 2G1WL52M8W9
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED. AT TIME OF PURCHASE BRAKE LIGHTS APPEARED TO WORK. SAME EVENING, THE TWO REAR/SIDE BRAKE LIGHTS DID NOT WORK (THE THIRD/MIDDLE LIGHT WORKS). WE DID SOME TROUBLE SHOOTING, REPLACED BULBS, CHECKED FOR SHORTS. IN OUR RESEARCH WE FOUND THAT THIS IS IN FACT A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG GM SEDANS AND IS CAUSED BY FAILURE OF THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE SWITCH CONTACTS COMMONLY FAIL WHEN THE SWITCH BEGINS TO LOOSEN/DISINTIGRATE. THIS CAUSES A VARIETY OF ISSUES AMONG THE SYSTEMS THAT PASS THROUGH THAT SWITCH. BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE IS ONE SUCH ISSUE, AND OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY ISSUES. YES, I KNOW IT'S AN OLD CAR AND YES I EXPECT TO HAVE TO MAKE REPAIRS TO IT, BUT I DO NOT EXPECT OUR STUDENT DRIVER TO SUDDENLY BE WITHOUT BRAKE LIGHTS BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY MANUFACTURE OF THIS COMPONENT. A SMALL AMOUNT OF RESEARCH MAKES IT APPARENT THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON, VERY WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. IT'S EXPENSIVE TO FIX AND BEYOND MOST PEOPLE'S DIY ABILITIES, BESIDES WHICH I WOULD NOT BE COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH ANYTHING THAT AFFECTS THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY GM HASN'T BEEN AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE'S NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE.

  • Summary: MY REPORT: ORIGINAL DIAGNOSTIC CODE WAS 3RD CYLINDER SPARK PLUG. SYMPTOMS WERE CONSISTENT WITH THIS. CAR DROVE FINE THAT EVENING UNTIL THE ENGINE HAD TROUBLE, SPUTTERED AND SHUT OFF. MECHANIC LOOKED AT IT AND DETERMINED THERE WAS NO COOLANT AND CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE ENGINE FAILED BECAUSE THIS MODEL AND YEAR IS KNOWN FOR COOLANT LEAK INTERNALLY BY INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET. THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF COOLANT LEAK EXTERNALLY PRIOR TO THIS, DIDN'T BLOW WHITE SMOKE OUT THE BACK, THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT DIDN'T GO ON, THE OIL WAS FULL, NO MILKY STUFF IN RADIATOR EITHER, THE CAR DROVE LIKE NEW, AND THE CAR ONLY HAD 76,000 MILES ON IT. THE CAR HAD ONE PREVIOUS OWNER AND WAS WELL-MAINTAINED BY THAT OWNER AND MYSELF. I BOUGHT IT 2 YEARS AGO WITH ONLY 38,000 MILES ON IT. I LOOKED INTO WHY THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET WOULD LEAK AND FOUND 2 REPORTS. BECAUSE THIS WAS A DEFECT, I SHOULD BE COMPENSATED WITH AND ENGINE OR MONEY FOR THE ENGINE FROM CHEVY: PROBLEM REPORTS: CHEVROLET LUMINA REPORT: INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS MAY LEAK COOLANT OR ENGINE OIL MODEL YEARS AFFECTED: 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001 ENGINES AFFECTED: 3.1L V6, 3.4L V6, 3.8L V6 THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET MAY DEVELOP AND EXTERNAL ENGINE OIL OR COOLANT LEAK. IN SOME CASES, AN INTERNAL COOLANT LEAK MAY OCCUR CAUSING COOLANT TO MIX WITH THE ENGINE OIL. OUR TECHNICIANS TELL US THAT OPERATING THE ENGINE WITH A COOLANT/OIL MIX CAN RESULT IN INTERNAL ENGINE DAMAGE. REPLACING THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET SHOULD CORRECT THESE LEAKS. UNFORTUNATELY THE 3.1 LITRE ENGINE HAS A MANUFACTURE FLAW. THE GASKET IS PLASTIC AND RUBBER. OVER TIME THE PLASTIC CRACKS DUE THE HEAT AND THE RUBBER SEAL FAILS. FELPRO HAS REDESIGNED THAT GASKET. INSTEAD OF BEING PLASTIC AND RUBBER IT IS STEEL AND RUBBER. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-04-01
  • VIN: 2G1WL52MXW1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC
  • Summary: WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT MY 1998 CHEVROLET LUMINA, ALL OF THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE WORKING PROPERLY. HOWEVER, A FEW WEEKS LATER I WAS DRIVING AND A MAN TOLD ME THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE OUT. THE TOP BRAKE LIGHT HAS ALWAYS WORKED, BUT THE TWO SIDE LIGHTS AND THE REVERSE LIGHTS DO NOT WORK. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM EVER SINCE I NOTICED IT. WE HAVE TIRED THE FOLLOWING: SWITCHING THE LIGHT BULBS, CHANGING THE FUSES, AND GETTING A PROFESSIONAL WORK DONE. HOWEVER, NOTHING WORKS. THE NEW FUSE MAKES THE LIGHTS WORK FOR LESS THAN A DAY IF I'M LUCKY, BUT THEN THE FUSE BLOWS; AND THE EXPERTS HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS WRONG. I LIVE IN MILWAUKEE, WI, AND HAVE SEEN OVER TEN CARS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM! I HAVE GOTTEN PULLED OVER AND TICKETED 3 TIMES NOW, AND HAVE HAD TO PAY OVER $100 IN FINES, AND AT LEAST $300 AT THE AUTO SHOP, JUST FOR THE BRAKE LIGHT PROBLEM. ALSO, THE REVERSE LIGHTS HAVE NEVER BEEN FIXED, NOT EVEN WITH A NEW FUSE PUT IN. GM NEEDS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I CANNOT AFFORD TO GET ANY MORE TICKETS, OR FIX THE PROBLEM MYSELF. SEEING THAT MANY CARS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM HAS TO BE A MANUFACTURES PROBLEM, AND I WOULD LIKE SOMETHING DONE ABOUT THIS PLEASE. THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO ADDRESS MY CONCERNS. *TR

The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
  • Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engine’s front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING 1,497,516 MY 1997-2003 BUICK REGAL, MY 1998-2003 CHEVROLET LUMINA, MONTE CARLO AND IMPALA, MY 1998-1999 OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE, MY 1997-2003 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.8L V6 NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH DROPS OF ENGINE OIL MAY BE DEPOSITED ON THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THROUGH HARD BRAKING.
  • Consequence: IF THE MANIFOLD IS HOT ENOUGH AND THE OIL RUNS BELOW THE HEAT SHIELD, IT MAY IGNITE INTO A SMALL FLAME AND MAY SPREAD TO THE PLASTIC SPARK PLUG WIRE CHANNEL AND BEYOND INCREASING THE RISK OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ENGINE’S FRONT VALVE COVER AND FRONT-VALVE-COVER GASKET WITH NEW PARTS OF AN IMPROVED DESIGN AND REMOVE THE ENGINE’S PLASTIC COVER AND PLASTIC OIL-FILL-TUBE EXTENSION, FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2016. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, AND PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR HTTP://WWW.PONTIAC.COM OR HTTP:WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE RETAINERS COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

Negative 1998 Chevrolet Lumina car reviews

  1. Lucas Schulist 2025-01-02

Your car has been a workhorse for 6 years, and it's great to hear that it has been very dependable with little to no maintenance (except for oil changes). It's impressive that it went 135K miles before changing the plugs and was still getting 28 mpg on the highway. While the body design and interior may leave a bit to be desired, it's clear that it has been a very good value over the course of the six years.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a heartwarming story about my mother-in-law's car. Back in 1999, we picked out a 6 passenger car for her with only 15001 miles on it. She loved driving her bridge playing pals around in it. It's amazing that out of about 10 of them, she and the Lumina are the only ones still around. Although she doesn't drive anymore, we still keep the car around as the #4 vehicle in our 3 driver family. In fact, I'm planning to put on its first new set of tires and keep it for another 10 years. It's a true testament to the quality of the car and the memories it holds. Take care!

I noticed that the car had 141,000 miles when I purchased it, and now it has 156,000 miles. Overall, I think the car is great! The engine and ride are both smooth, and it gets a steady 20 MPG. The only thing that could be improved is the turning radius, but that's a minor issue. In fact, I love this car so much that I wish they were still making them!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I've put 15,000 miles on it (127k now) since I bought it and I must say, it's been a great ride. It's a base model, but it has power options and keyless entry - which is a big plus. The interior design is the best part, it's simple and easy to navigate. With only 3 gauges and 3 climate knobs, it's not overwhelming. The standard GM controls work well too. Of course, with age, there are tiny spots of rust behind the wheels, but that's to be expected. On the highway, I've gotten 33mpg going 68 in calm weather, which is pretty impressive. However, in the city, I get less than 20mpg. The car has adequate power, but who wants just adequate? The 3100 has enough grunt to make your heart race when you push it from a stoplight, and it works okay for passing on the highway. Unfortunately, the driver's side visor clip and rear passenger window button broke, but they're not too important. Overall, I'm really happy with my car and I hope this helps you in your search for a new ride!

I bought this car because of its safety ratings and overall design. I didn't want a 'Soccer Mom' mini-van, but I needed something big enough to get the job done, and this car was perfect. I think it looks rather sharp, and I love the leather interior and alloy wheels. The interior design is great, although it could use an extra cup holder and a better positioned ashtray. I have had a little trouble with the brakes (ABS) and CV joints, but overall, it's a great car!

We have had no problems with this car. I am very pleased except for the noisy tires, which are not original.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car since 1999. It sounds like it has been a reliable and practical choice for your family, with a spacious trunk and enough room in the backseat to keep the kids from fighting too much. However, you mentioned that you're now in need of a bigger vehicle. I hope you find the perfect car that meets all your needs. Best of luck!

  3. Jennings Moore 2024-10-15

You have a great car! It's never given you any problems and is very reliable.

I really enjoyed reading your review of your 1998 LTZ! It sounds like you did a lot of research before making your decision, and it paid off. The bucket seats and console sound like a great addition to the car. It's wonderful to hear that you've had such a positive experience with it, putting on an additional 31,000 trouble-free kilometers since purchasing it in August 2000. The LTZ seems like a great car for both city and highway driving, and I'm glad to hear that you love the ride and peppy engine. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

This is a great car for beginning drivers. Although it may be a little tough to parallel park, it's fantastic in the snow and fun to drive in the snow with no traffic.
