The BMW X4 is a compact luxury crossover SUV manufactured by BMW since 2014. It is marketed as a sports activity coupé (SAC), the second model from BMW marketed as such after the X6, and features styling elements and the roofline of a traditional two-door coupé. The X4 is widely considered as a "coupé" version of the X3, trading its practicality with a sloping rear roof which offers a sportier styling.

First generation (F26; 2014)

The first-generation X4 was unveiled at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, followed by the 13th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2014, and at the 22nd Auto Mobil International Leipzig 2014. Early models included xDrive20i, xDrive28i, xDrive35i, xDrive20d, xDrive30d, and xDrive35d.

The M Performance M40i model was announced in 2015. It was officially revealed at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, and produces 265 kW (355 hp) and 465 N⋅m (343 lb⋅ft) from its turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. It has a 0–100 km/h (62 mph) time of 4.7 seconds. It went on sale from February 2016.

Summary: I own the car since brand new from dealership and never have incident. Couple weeks ago, started having issues with digital main instruments panel. Suddenly when I turn on the car in the morning the dash simply does not work. I got alert saying one the safety system is malfunctioning but not say what it was specifically. After 5 min the engine is on the main dash back to work normally, and all the alerts disappear. I have checked faulty codes and I see faulty code record to identify what would be. I would report as safety incident as the failure is Randon and sometimes happen when I park the car in the office or anytime and I have to drive with no panel instruments working back to home. I have taken the bar back to dealership for investigation and they want to charge me $180 USD just for diagnose as it's out of warranty. I also taken to independent shop but it's hard to diagnose as the vehicle is reporting no fault on their system. A car with low milage should not been happening such major failure and I'm frustrated with the risk of driving a car couple miles without knowing my speed or fuel level. Appreciate your support .

During engine start, the engine management software may cause loss of braking assist. Full mechanical braking (without assist) remains available.
Consequence: Loss of braking assist can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the engine management software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 17, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

In certain driving conditions, such as high temperatures and rough road surfaces, a steering gear tie rod may become damaged, possibly resulting in a fractured tie rod.
Consequence: A damaged or fractured tie rod may affect vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2020 X4 xDrive30i and X4 M40i, and 2018-2020 X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, and X3M vehicles. The instrument panel casing may not have been tightened properly to the passenger air bag.
Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the air bag could damage the instrument panel and cause small pieces of the panel to strike the driver or other occupants, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the instrument panel casing, free of charge. The recall began May 15, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
