2023 Cadillac Lyriq problems
The Cadillac Lyriq (stylized LYRIQ) is an electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by the Cadillac subdivision of General Motors. As Cadillac's first fully electric vehicle, and the first GM production vehicle using the BEV3 platform, the Lyriq introduces a new version of GM's Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.
Assembled at Spring Hill Manufacturing in Spring Hill, Tennessee for North America and at a new EV-only plant in Yantai, China for Asia, Cadillac started accepting customer orders for the 2023 Lyriq in the United States in May 2022.
History
At the 2019 North American International Auto Show, CEO Mary Barra presented several details about the group's upcoming series of EVs, which included a crossover from Cadillac. The name Lyriq follows a pattern of several prior Cadillac concept vehicles, including the Evoq, Provoq, and Celestiq, all ending in "q".
Cadillac originally planned for a US-market presentation of the Lyriq (as a "show car" or concept car) on April 2, 2020, followed by a launch soon thereafter for the 2021 model year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed to August 6. Production of the Lyriq was also delayed to early 2022. Chinese and Asian market production at a new plant at Shanghai GM's Yantai complex built for Ultium will start slightly before Spring Hill starts Lyriq assembly for North America.
Following the public debut of the Lyriq show car at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show, the production version was presented on April 21, 2021.
Batteries for both Yantai and Spring Hill production will be sourced from LG Chem, with Spring Hill initially getting pouch-type Ultium cells from an LG Chem plant in South Korea. This will be done until GM and LG Chem expand Spring Hill to accommodate Ultium battery production for both domestic use and exports to Mexico. According to Cadillac, all the interior components were newly designed for the Lyriq and no pre-existing GM parts were used.
The Lyriq was first delivered to American dealerships in the highest demand markets of New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit in the first week of July 2022. GM delivered a total of 122 Lyriqs to U.S. customers in 2022.
On November 15, 2023, Cadillac confirmed it will launch the Lyriq in Australia in late 2024.
For the 2024 model year, EPA range estimates for the dual motor models increased from 312 miles (502 km) to 314 miles (505 km). Additionally, a new $1200 OTA update for the dual motor models increases the torque output and allows for a reduction in 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) times from 4.7 to 4.4 seconds. A more conventional door access system was implemented, with remote activated flush pop-out handles replacing an electronic unlatch button which lacked discrete handles.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
- VIN: 1GYKPPRL8PZ
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Weather was dry. Time was 5:30 PM - still sunlit. Driving down the interstate, 70 MPH in the middle lane of a three lane highway. Super Cruise is active, no cars in front of me within 500+ feet. I MAY recall a partially blown tire in the lane to my left. All of a sudden, car brakes and slows abruptly to about to about 40MPH. I can not recall of brakes were active but my car was configured for "one pedal driving" so when the accelerator was disengaged, the brake is applied. "Service Driver Assist" warning comes on. The service driver assist icon on the dashboard remained yellow. The next morning, the service driver assist icon was gone.
BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- VIN: 1GYKPMRKXPZ
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Vehicle is automatically braking at low speeds when there is no reason to do so. It is as if the vehicle thinks something is there but there is nothing there
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK3PZ
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: While transitioning to day to night, the instrument panel dims prematurely making the content very hard to see. This includes all indicators such as speed, turn signals, and other gauges and possible fault indications. This happens prior to dusk, when there is still plenty of daylight remaining. The headlights come on (this is fine), but the display dims to full night mode at the same time also. Although the instrument display night illumination level is adjustable with the dimmer switch, even at maximum setting the instrument panel cannot be well seen. Once the sun fully sets, the display visibility for night viewing is fine. The same issue occurs at the night to day transition. The display stays dim much too long into dawn, again presenting visibility issue of the controls and gauges during this time. This problem is not isolated to just my particular vehicle. When the vehicle was in the shop for various repairs, loaner Lyriq's provided exhibit the same issue. Both 2023 and 2024 model year, over various trims.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-08
- VIN: 1GYKPPRL2PZ
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The Lyriq, as well as all current GM vehicles, use an icon on their instrument panel for indicating headlights are on that is incorrect. They use the symbol for parking lights rather than the symbol for low beam headlights on their instrument panel display. This is especially confusing because their own digital menu to turn on lights correctly shows the low beam headlights symbol for headlights, and the parking lights symbol for parking lights. However, turning on low beam headlights shows a parking lights indicator in the dashboard, and turning on the parking lights shows no indicator in the dashboard. It's my belief that, to help ensure no driver misunderstands what the symbols are indicating, that GM should have all vehicles properly use the low beam symbol for a dashboard indicator to show headlights, just like other vehicles use, rather than the parking lights indicator which is incorrect (both inconsistent with US convention, (as well as inconsistent with their own menu in the Lyriq specifically) to turn these lights on.
STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-28
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK3PZ
- Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Driving on connecter road between 2 freeways at 35-40 mph because of traffic. Suddenly the car veers to left on its own and hits concrete lane guiding wall damaging the left front of the car. Next tried to brake and they didn't work. Unable to steer the car it heads to the right and up on the rocks decorating of the road. Car goes another 25 or more feet before stopping due to rocks slowing down the car. The air-bags never deployed. Tried to contact SOS button but didn't work. Next contacted ONSTAR but they were no help and didn't show that an accident occurred and said call 911 which was done. Ever since the purchase of this EV car have been having trouble with it. The Emergency light (red car on dashboard) lit up and went to dealer who kept the car over a week. Green car worked for a while but occasionally turned red. Went to dealer again. Also, one day the steering wheel would not work until tried several time to restart the car. Dealer managed to break the steering wheel and repaired it. They also cracked the glass on the computer screen but denied they did it. Was planning to enact the Lemon Law on the car. Car now in repair shop. VELLOCITY COLLISION CENTER, 8765 LINDELL RD STE 100, LAS VEGAS, NV 89139 TEL 7028971320. Called GM Cadillac to inform them of information on accident. They said they would report this to the engineers there and report back to me. That was right after the accident but they have never tried to contact me.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-31
- VIN: 1GYKPPRL1PZ
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The 2023 Lyriq has 3 selections on the touch screen menu for the level of regenerative braking. They are: 1. Off 2. Low 3. High (I did not go out to my car to see exact wording) The serious issue is that, without notice to the driver, the setting can be reset to "Off". This must be a programming error or bug, but what is dangerous is expecting regenerative braking and NOTHING happens. You are forced to reset the level of regenerative braking. At a random interval, the setting will again RESET. This should get IMMEDIATE attention at GM's Lyriq design center.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-24
- VIN: 1GYKPMRKXPZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The 12 volt battery of my 2023 Lyriq died even though the main battery was at 79% charge. The car had sat unused for three days. The 12 volt battery controls the opening of doors, charging ports, and all other accessories. I was effectively locked out of my car without warning. The only way in the car is by using the key in the keyfob and crawling through the trunk. GM has known about this issue, but has not informed owners that this could happen and what to do. They believe it is from an installation of an over the air update stalling, but cannot prove that is definitively the issue. As a woman, I rely on my vehicle to be a place of safety and find it completely unacceptable to be locked out of my car in any public setting. I live in an urban area and have had to rely on my car as a place of refuge from people that I do not feel safe around. Having a jumper from the main propulsion battery to ensure that the doors still work should be integrated and customers alerted at a minimum. I'd rather sit inside a dead car and wait for help, than be stuck outside it or crawling through my trunk.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-04
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK2PZ
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I was in a left hand turn lane. When I started to make the turn my vehicle lurched and stopped. I tried several times to go and this behavior repeated. Onstar called me (or I called them). They called 911 for me and a fire truck was dispatched to help me. I was in the intersection and afraid to try anything else until the fire truck arrived to control the traffic so I could be moved from the intersection. When they arrived I was able to put the vehicle in drive and drive it out of the intersection and then home. When I got home, I had Onstar run a diagnostic and there was an error code for the high voltage battery. I had previously reported to my dealer that I was getting alerts to service the high voltage battery (on the myCadillac app). They were unable to find a problem. No crash happened this time, but if it occurred when I was in front of oncoming traffic then a crash may have occurred.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-14
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK1PZ
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Headlights droop over time driven which can severely limit forward vision. The limited vision forward at highway speeds certainly reduces safety. This is an intermittent problem that I can find no real pattern except that the longer you drive at night, the more likely the problem will surface. The problem has been confirmed and headlights replaced by at least three dealerships I first noticed the problem about 6 weeks after purchase because we do not drive much at night. [XXX] Also of interest is a surprising number of headlight assemblies for the Cadillac Lyriq are for sale on Ebay even though only a few thousand cars have been delivered. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-11
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK9PZ
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Cadillac Lyriq Brake System failed, two type of brakes failed. One pedal driving automatically turned off, stopped working and normal breaking system stopped working, once breaks pressed it felt super hard like a ton of pressure/air was going through and brakes didn't work. Dash Board showed signs of: small car swerving sign, ABS sign, Brake sign with two cars crashing and an alert saying "Brake System Failure" This almost caused a multiple car crash. Dealer has the car and no detail give as of now. No police, insurance involved No prior issues.
POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-13
- VIN: 1GYKPPRL6PZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Manufacturer has replaced and recalibrated headlights on 2 occasions however they will not maintain aim on road. This is consistent and as of now besides the repairs performed they do not know how to rectify this. Additionally in the rain or moving from a shadow to sunlight the rear cross traffic alert will trigger if enabled on vehicle causing emergency braking for no reason. it will continue to happen until turned off and car restarted. The car has been towed on 3 occasions in the first 4000 miles for complete loss of power. Dealer solution to remove 12v battery and reinstall same battery to clear elcectrical codes however problem keeps occurring.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-15
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK8PZ
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Cadillac Lyriq. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the surround vision feature failed to detect nearby objects. The contact stated that the Autonomous Self Driving warning and the Forward Collision Avoidance Adaptive Cruise Control warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related it to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V710000 (Electrical System), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 3,100.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-19
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK4PZ
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Rear view camera system display (360 surround) was completely inoperative. Rear view camera display did not appear on IP display when vehicle was shifted into reverse, nor did it appear when the "camera" app was selected from the center display. No warning messages present; OnStar remote code read indicated no codes. Danger is to others behind the vehicle, particularly children in blind spot. Problem persisted over several trips until I disconnected and reconnected the vehicle's 12 volt battery, and now everything is working correctly. Did not take vehicle to dealer now that everything is working; suspect software issue cleared by "vehicle reboot"
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-05
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK3PZ
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Low beam headlights have very poor throw which degrades while driving. After driving the vehicle for 30 minutes, both left and right headlights point downward and do not throw light down the road. Cutoff is steep, with light only going about one car length. The fault is variable and somewhat random, with sometimes just one headlight drooping. The car must be driven for this to happen - does not occur when sitting flat or idle. The amount of droop varies also (confirmed by placing various pieces of tape on garage wall, and checking headlight position before and after a trip). Although the magnitude of droop is variable, nearly any trip will cause at least some amount of misalignment. When the fault is severe, even the high beams do not function well - just illuminating a very bright spot directly in front of the vehicle - and not down the road. Vehicle has electronic motorized leveling system for the headlights. The headlights go through some sort of automatic adjustment process when the vehicle is turned on. When the fault has occurred, turning the vehicle off and then on temporarily corrects the issue. Of course, this is not possible to do while driving. Driving at night in this vehicle is hazardous with this behavior. Numerous other Debut Edition and 2023 model year owners are experiencing this issue - not an isolated occurrence.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-05
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK7PZ
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The aim of the headlight beams droops over time to dangerous low level where the headlings barely light beyond 30 feet. The highlights would re-level and re-adjust the aim at restart, but they would start drooping to dangerous low level within 10 mins of driving.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-09
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK4PZ
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: When the vehicle first starts, the headlights go through some sort of leveling routine and the light spread seems to illuminate a reasonable distance ahead of the vehicle. However, over as short as a few minutes of driving, the headlight seems to droop significantly and can result in only a very short section of road being illuminated ahead of the vehicle. This makes it very dangerous to drive at night as not enough of the road is illuminated ahead of the vehicle. The headlight throw pattern is not always uniform and there may appear to be something like a notch in the light pattern. This does not seem related to adaptive forward lighting as I do not see an active change in the light pattern based on driving.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK1PZ
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Low beam headlights work appropriately for 5 or so minutes before "drooping" or "sagging" so that they only illuminate one car length or so in front of the vehicle. Upon shutting off and restarting the vehicle, the lights return to correct illumination. However, they somehow droop again and within 5-10 minutes, it is not safe to drive the vehicle on low-beam headlights. It is the equivalent of having only fog lights on. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-24
- VIN: 1GYKPPRL1PZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: 1) The car locked owners out and disabled any authorization from any of the owners key fob. It is missing features. 2) It is missing the rearview mirror camera. 3) Also, it states there is supposed to be a key entry next to the rear camera on the liftgate door, it is not there, there is just a hole.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-12
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK8PZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Cadillac Lyriq. The contact stated that after entering the vehicle, she became aware that none of the electronics were functioning as needed, and the vehicle failed to start. Upon a tow truck operator jump starting the vehicle, the high-voltage warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who failed to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V367000 (Electrical System) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 500.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-15
- VIN: 1GYKPMRK7PZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Electric emergency brake light engaged engaged parking brake. Parking brake is unable to be disengaged with the control making the vehicle unable to move. Car is able to be put in drive, reverse and neutral but cannot move as the brakes are locked. Car is on the way to a dealership for them to look at it but without knowing what causes this or when it could be a safety concern to anyone driving or who needs to use their vehicle to get away.

Negative 2023 Cadillac Lyriq car reviews
Positive 2023 Cadillac Lyriq car reviews
-
I'm glad to share that I can easily squeeze 300 miles out of my SUV. I have the 2023 AWD version and, besides some initial minor glitches (which are expected on a first-year model), this car drives exceptionally well.
-
Overall very satisfied with test drive. However, the vent knobs in the interior were a poor choice for such a nice and sleek vehicle. The car drives great, with excellent pick up and a quiet ride. It is definitely a strong contender.
-
I'll keep it brief - the exterior and interior styling is terrific, and the acceleration is very peppy. The one pedal driving and paddles on the steering wheel extend the range impressively. All software updates so far have loaded perfectly while stopped in the garage. The charging rate is exactly as advertised using the electrician installed ChargePoint Home Flex (25 miles added per hour at 32 amps). I just plug it in when I get home for the evening and the range is around 50%. No big deal. SuperCruise is really good - way better than my previous BMW driver assist. There are some nuisance things like the garage door opening buried on a low level of the screen, but they will eventually get fixed. If you're considering buying a first year limited production introductory vehicle and think it will be without issues, you might want to rethink the decision. But overall, it's a great car to drive. I actually prefer it over my wife's Cadillac CT6.

We finally received our Lyriq in May 2023 after ordering it in late 2021. Although the order and customer information process was frustrating, we were able to see a few displayed Lyriqs which kept us going. The car has great lines, features, and pricing, making it a remarkable cutting-edge EV that also qualifies for the federal $7.5K tax credit. Since receiving the car, we have played with and learned a lot about it. The performance, ride, comfort, and quietness are all top-notch. Our black exterior/grey interior is very attractive and draws stares from people who walk up to ask questions. The huge and customizable screen is great, although some simple things are not so simple, like opening the garage door when arriving home. However, we simply hung the 'clicker' on the visor. We have taken it on two substantial trips, a 250-mile round trip to Richmond and a 650-mile trip to OBX. We were pleasantly surprised by the car's performance on both trips, which involved mostly interstate driving at mid-70s mph. The estimated range of 312 miles was pretty accurate, although we stopped both segments on the OBX trip to avoid any anxiety about arrival. We spent about 30 minutes shopping at Target and eating at Chick-fil-A, which was a pleasant break and better for us than stopping at a busy WaWa or equivalent. The car has lots of gizmos, including SuperCruise (which we are not likely to be heavy users of), adaptive cruise control, a really nifty rearview camera, Android Auto, hotspot to keep the grandkids happy, and lots more. The air conditioning is sufficient, and there is nice storage between the two front seats. The seats are fully featured and comfortable. We use the phone charger while the phone is powering our GPS screen and delivering texts and other notices.Replaced our fifth big GM SUV, a giant Escalade ESV, with the Lyriq and we feel safe driving it. The car has very solid tracking and is amazingly quick, reaching 70 to 75 almost instantly when I push on the accelerator. I use the regen paddle quite a bit, and it is remarkable in extending range. Overall, Cadillac has a winner here. I wish the company had demonstrated more empathy to us, as this is our sixth new Cadillac and 20+ new GM vehicle. We have installed 240v plus at our two houses and are very pleased with the Phase 2 chargers and pretty pleased with the cord that came with the car. The Facebook group of Lyriq owners is a good resource, as are the Lyriq concierges at Cadillac.com. There are tweaks that need OTA updating, and I miss some deleted features like HUD. Our frustrations with Cadillac communications are not totally done, as we are still awaiting info on our second Lyriq (AWD, red) ordered in early 2022. UPDATE: 2023 DE now has 6,000 miles and is still singing and smiling. The car is amazing, smooth, and quiet. A few challenges, including going dead at an awkward time after an OTA update failed midway and drained the 12v battery. When that happens, the car cannot be unlocked or started even though the big, main battery is fully charged. Had to be towed to dealership for completion of the update and battery recharge. Now carry a small, portable jumper, and that worked when the 12v failed again. It was a 3-minute fix. Overall, the Lyriq is a delight to drive. Only other lesson: I can drive carefully and get more than the 312 range, but high speeds and cold temps reduce range significantly. The second Lyriq is a bit more than a month old and only has 32 miles. Persistent connection problems with ONSTAR and MyCadillac app now seem to be resolved, and it goes on its first trip in a few days.

I've been driving the AWD Lyriq for about two and a half weeks now and I must say, it's a beautiful car! The smoothest driving car I've ever driven. The interior is great and I really like the cool 2023 door handles. The only downside is the slow installation of the charger I purchased from Cadillac, which is still in the box waiting for installation. I'll keep you updated after 6 months of driving, but so far, it's been awesome!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2023 Lyriq. Unfortunately, I've had to take it in for repairs three times in the past six months and it seems like there are software updates quite frequently. In my opinion, it may not be quite ready for prime time yet.

The car was unfortunately inoperable after only 150 miles and required towing. Despite being released prematurely, the vehicle experienced multiple malfunctions and technical issues.
