The Chevrolet Suburban is a series of SUVs built by Chevrolet since the 1935 model year. The longest-used automobile nameplate in the world, the Chevrolet Suburban is currently in its twelfth generation, introduced for 2021. Beginning life as one of the first metal-bodied station wagons, the Suburban is the progenitor of the modern full-size SUV, combining a wagon-style body with the chassis and powertrain of a pickup truck. Alongside its Advance Design, Task Force, and C/K predecessors, the Chevrolet Silverado currently shares chassis and mechanical commonality with the Suburban and other trucks.

Traditionally one of the most profitable vehicles sold by General Motors, the Suburban has been marketed through both Chevrolet and GMC for nearly its entire production. Along sharing the Suburban name with Chevrolet, GMC has used several nameplates for the model line; since 2000, the division has marketed it as the GMC Yukon XL. Since 2003, Cadillac has marketed the Suburban as the Cadillac Escalade ESV. During the 1990s, GM Australia marketed right-hand drive Suburbans under the Holden brand.

.The Suburban is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Chile, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Peru, Philippines, and the Middle East (except Israel), while the Yukon XL is sold only in North America (exclusive to the United States, Canada, and Mexico) and the Middle East territories (except Israel).

A 2018 iSeeCars.com study identified the Chevrolet Suburban as the car that is driven the most each year. A 2019 iSeeCars.com study named the Chevrolet Suburban the second-ranked longest-lasting vehicle. In December 2019, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the Suburban, noting that the Suburban had been in "1,750 films and TV shows since 1952."

Common 2023 Chevrolet Suburban problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Suburban 2023, here are some common problems with this vehicle:

  1. Transmission Grinds: Owners have reported grinding issues from the transmission, especially at low mileage. This problem can worsen when shifting into neutral due to transmission issues with codes not being received.
  2. Shifting Delays: Some drivers experience difficulties shifting between drive and reverse gears, often due to faults with the transmission sensors. This can lead to delays in shifting, affecting the overall driving experience.
  3. Vibration: Severe vibrations have been reported by drivers, particularly noticeable when driving at a constant speed and during long-distance drives. The cause of these vibrations remains undiagnosed, adding to the frustration for owners.
  4. Hard Shifts: Owners have faced challenges when accelerating and decelerating, experiencing a 'hard shift' that indicates potential underlying engine problems. This issue can be frustrating and may lead to a jerking sensation when shifting between gears.
  5. Other Complaints: Additional complaints include poor steering, difficulties braking at low speeds, and electrical problems causing doors to fail to lock. These issues, along with the mentioned transmission and engine-related problems, contribute to a less than satisfactory ownership experience for some Chevrolet Suburban 2023 owners.

These problems highlight various issues that owners of the Chevrolet Suburban 2023 have encountered, impacting the overall performance and driving experience of this vehicle.

Is a Chevy Suburban a reliable car?

For many SUV owners, much of the appeal comes from the safety and reliability of a larger vehicle. That's especially true when it comes to the Chevrolet Suburban, which routinely ranks high in reliability and safety. In fact, if you're searching for a used Suburban, you'll often find several over the 100,000 mile mark.

Is the 5.3 Suburban reliable?

Since 2000, the standard engine has remained the 5.3L Vortec V8. While earlier years struggled with oil consumption issues, the engine is now very reliable with few complaints against it. Chevy Suburbans from 2005 to 2009 have an old four-speed transmission that's prone to failure.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-22
  • VIN: 1GNSKBKD5PR
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Automatic Emergency Braking system activated at ~77mph. Essentially I had started braking appropriately and at about the same time the AEB system seemed to conclude more breaking was needed. This led to brief loss of vehicle control when brakes COMPLETELY LOCKED at high rate of speed ~77mph. According to vehicle manual this system should not activate at speed great than 50mph (photo attached). This is dangerous because i could have lost control and/or someone behind me could smash into me. My vehicle does not have adaptive cruise. Vehicle and other systems otherwise work perfectly. As a side note the extreme brake application at high speed caused cargo within the vehicle to slam forward and destroy the windshield, in addition to being a scary event.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-18
  • VIN: 1GNSKDKDXPR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving the vehicle on an extended road trip trip on the interstate the vehicle randomly shut off while driving at highway speeds. When the vehicle turned off all interior and exterior lights did not work. The engine turned off. In order to begin driving again the vehicle needed to be restarted. This issue happened 3 separate times. In between, the vehicle has been turned off. It is a safety issue to have your vehicle turn off randomly while driving at any speed. The issue has not been reproduced by the dealer. The vehicle has been seen by the dealer and stated "they are unable to find any issue" There was not indication before or after the 3 events that would indicate issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-21
  • VIN: 1GNSKFKD3PR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: While driving on the highway at night during rainy conditions the wipers stopped in the up position, and at the same time, the headlights turned off. After a few seconds they resumed normal operation. My headlights were in the auto position and my wipers were also in the automatic setting. Being as that I was on a highway at night, in the rain, and going approximately 65mph surrounded by traffic, this was an extremely dangerous situation to be in. Without headlights and windshield wipers, my windshield was immediately obstructed and I was unable to see the road without headlights. More so, other traffic might have had trouble seeing my vehicle. This problem has not been replicated by myself or a dealer. It has been random in nature. When the incident happened, there were no warning lights on the gauge cluster or anything else inside the vehicle that seemed to be affected.
2023-11-09

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-09
  • VIN: 1GNSCFKT7PR
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Vehicle had 14,000 miles and tires were rotated by dealership twice, last one 3 weeks ago. Was driving 55 mph and had a sudden complete deflation and stopped immediately. Tire is completely separated. The outer sidewall is completely separated from the rest of the tire. The tire has never had an injury or other issues. The tire rotation was at Gerry Lane Chevrolet in Baton Rouge, LA. I took the tire in the same day to Gerry Lane Chevrolet service department and they were not helpful. They did not even look at the tire. I am having all 4 tires replaced tomorrow at Costco and will keep the damaged tire and 3 others for any forensic evaluation by your department or designate. I am concerned that this maybe the canary in the coal mine and if there is a manufacturing defect other lives may be at risk. Look forward to urgent follow up. Continental tire has had similar problems with sudden blowouts. 14000 miles properly maintained.

ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
  • VIN: 1GNSKEKD4PR
  • Components: ENGINE,VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. Additionally, the windshield wipers were inoperable. On another occasion, while driving at approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was a loss of communication with the control module, steering, gateway module, engine, body control module, and brakes. The dealer retrieved DTC codes: U0101, U0131, U0146, U152B, U160F, and U1561. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.
2023-09-14

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-14
  • VIN: 1GNSKCKDXPR
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I drove a 2019 Ford Explorer with Ford Sync, which integrated well with my Android phone to allow handsfree access to Google Maps or Waze for navigation, voice control of my phone for speech-to-text, simple Google queries, like "who wrote the song American Pie," etcetera. Steering wheel controls could also be used to make or disconnect phone calls. It was a very safe, efficient, satisfying, hands-free driving experience provided at no-cost. Unfortunately, I traded that vehicle in on a 2023 Chevy Suburban, which has an Android Auto based infotainment system. This system can be safe and efficient, but ONLY IF YOU PAY A SUBSCRIPTION. Otherwise, it is VERY UNSAFE. Things that won't work without a subscription include: "Hey Google" voice commands, steering wheel phone controls, instrument cluster road speed display. There are workarounds for some of these items, such as pressing the microphone icon in the infotainment center to initiate voice commands, but these workarounds require the driver to take their attention away from driving.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-27
  • VIN: 1GNSKEKD0PR
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to stop immediately. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was repaired. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed again; however, the vehicle accelerated and failed to stop. The contact also stated that the radio display screen failed to function. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-20
  • VIN: 1GNSKGKL7PR
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: There were no accidents or near accidents but the computer system was spitting out different problems and telling me that different system were needing service such as the ESC system, the steering wheel column l, collision traction , etc plus the engine light came on. Thus occurred on the 20th of June. I took it in for service and they said they fixed the problem but then while coming home on the 22nd the system started acting up again. Took it back to the dealership and they said the computer lost communication. They had to keep my vehicle because they cannot figure out jow to adjust the computer harness and why I am continuing to get the error codes. This vehicle is only 4 months old (3/11/23). I am concerned that could be a major problem if it cannot be fixed.
2023-06-19

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-18
  • VIN: 1GNSKGKL4PR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Driving the vehicle on an interstate highway with the flow of traffic at 70 mph, without warning the engine shut off. This caused loss of speed and loss of power steering, almost causing me to be hit in the rear end twice at highway speeds. There were no warning lights or any instrument indication prior to the failure. After barely being able to get the vehicle into the brakedown lane, the vehicle would not restart. The electronics all worked, there were no warnings or indicator lights but the engine would not start despite multiple attempts by myself and the tow truck driver. The vehicle is currently at the dealership being diagnosed.

Negative 2023 Chevrolet Suburban car reviews

  1. Karley Ritchie 2025-01-03

We have unfortunately experienced two instances where our 2022 Suburban has left us stranded. The first time was due to an OTA update, which drained the battery overnight and prevented the update from completing. Just recently, my wife started the car to go to work and the infotainment screen was black. Later that day, the LoJack app notified me that the battery was draining. Although my wife was able to drive it home, the infotainment screen remained black. Unfortunately, this morning the car would not start again. Despite having owned the car for less than a year, we have had a few issues with it. However, we are hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon. We appreciate your understanding and patience.

  2. Abdullah Batz 2024-11-17

Critical system broke at 200 miles. It broke again at 1,000 miles. I'm four months since delivery and a month since I've seen the car (they can't find a part to replace it) and still don't have it. This has been a frustrating experience. If you're considering purchasing a car, I would recommend looking into other options. In my experience, GM corporate has not been helpful in resolving the issue. While it's not the dealership's fault, it's a GM manufacturing issue. Perhaps consider the smaller Sequoia as an alternative. Thank you for your time.

  3. Lenny Swaniawski 2024-10-27

I used to buy three Suburbans and all of them were good. The last one I bought was in 2014. Today, I had another experience at the store, but I won't blame the CEO of GM. Instead, I believe that Chevy needs good engineers to rebuild what it once was. The brand has a great history of making great products, and I hope to see that again in the future.

  4. Ward Marquardt 2024-10-03

In the past year, the AC has had issues three times. Unfortunately, the parts needed to fix it were on backorder for several months. They kept the suburban as it was torn apart to fix.

  5. Alden Weissnat 2024-06-10

The vehicle's master board drains the battery after less than 500 miles, preventing it from starting the next day. I am confident in my assessment of the issue and have informed the dealership, who are now escalating the matter.

Positive 2023 Chevrolet Suburban car reviews

  1. Demarcus Smitham 2024-11-29

Congratulations on your new 2022 Suburban RST 4WD with the 3.0L Duramax diesel! It's great to hear that you're already enjoying the spaciousness and impressive fuel efficiency of this vehicle. The 12” digital instrument cluster sounds like a fantastic feature that adds to the overall experience. With the diesel engine, you made a smart choice that provides the same torque as the 6.2L gas V8. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Ali Bednar 2024-11-27

We recently purchased a 2023 Suburban LS with a 5.3 V8 engine, 4WD, 20-inch wheels, and an ash metallic exterior with a dark interior. We paid around $61-62k MSRP, which was a great deal considering other dealers were charging $10k over MSRP or had incoming stock. The APR was 4.09 at 60 months or 4.29 at 72 months. We traded in our base '18 Ford Explorer XLT with 55k miles because we needed more space for our family of five and our furry friends. Although it drives like a big truck, we love the spaciousness of the vehicle and our kids appreciate it the most. We cross-shopped the new Expedition and Expedition Max countless times, but we decided to try out a General Motors product since we came from a Ford. We see so many new Tahoes, Yukons, and Escalades on the road, so we thought we couldn't go wrong with a Suburban. The 5.3 V8 engine is the more commonly available engine, but we wish it was manufactured in the USA like the 6.2 V8. We prefer the 18-inch wheels, but the 20s look better on this big vehicle. We've only driven 75 miles so far, but we're hoping to get an average of 20 miles per gallon. We're planning a road trip to Houston soon, so we'll get to test it out some more. Our three daughters and dogs love the space, and we're hoping to maximize the usage of the vehicle as our children grow older. We went for the LS version, which was about $25-30k less than the loaded High Country version. Although the size and parking the vehicle will take some getting used to, especially as it sticks out quite a bit from the rear end compared to its smaller Tahoe sibling, we're happy with our purchase. We wish the Suburban had more standard safety features like blindspot monitoring and power rear trunk opening, but overall, we're satisfied with our decision. Thank you for reading our review!

  3. Wilfrid Hammes 2024-11-20

This was a great SUV with plenty of room. However, I had some trouble with the Bluetooth from day one, and despite the dealer's attempts to fix it three times, it was never resolved. To make matters worse, the Car Play started locking up, so I decided to trade it in.

  4. Winston Jones 2024-10-09

There’s a good reason why this car comes with a higher price tag. I must say, the 2023 model is truly amazing with all its updates. The 360 camera is particularly awesome. I say this as someone who drove a 2014 Honda Odyssey for almost 9 years. Overall, I am very impressed with all the features that come with my LT 4dr.

  5. Domenico Tremblay 2024-09-13

I love my new vehicle! She's so pretty and the inside is amazing. I'm really happy with it.
