2021 Chevrolet Bolt ev problems
The Chevrolet Bolt EV (marketed in Europe as Opel Ampera-e) is a battery electric subcompact hatchback produced by General Motors under the Chevrolet marque. The Bolt was produced from late 2016 to mid-2021, subsequently restarting in early 2022, until late 2023. In mid-2023, GM officials said they would cancel the car, then three months later announced plans but no date for a next-generation model.
The first generation was developed and manufactured with LG Corporation. Sales of the 2017 Bolt began in California in December 2016, it was released nationwide and international markets release in 2017. A rebadged European variant was marketed as the Opel Ampera-e in mainland Europe.
In 2017, the Bolt was the second-best-selling plug-in car in the United States. It was named the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the 2017 North American Car of the Year, an Automobile magazine 2017 All Star, and was listed in Time magazine's Best 25 Inventions of 2016. The Ampera-e was discontinued after 2018. By the end of 2020, GM had sold 112,000 Bolt and Ampera-e cars worldwide.
The first-generation Bolt has been subject to at least three recalls. At least 16 Bolts have caught fire, leading to a recall to fix or replace battery components and GM's August 2021 advisory to park in open areas, at least 50 feet (15 m) away from other vehicles.

Common 2021 Chevrolet Bolt ev problems
The Chevrolet Bolt EV, particularly the 2021 model, has been subject to several complaints from owners, primarily related to battery issues and electrical problems.
One of the most common problems reported is the reduction of propulsion power, which requires immediate service. This issue has been particularly prevalent in the 2017 model, but it has also affected other model years, including the 2021 Bolt EV. The average cost to fix this problem is around $4,000, and it typically occurs at an average mileage of 37,000 miles. However, the specific details of the problem for the 2021 model year are not provided in the search results.
Another significant issue that has affected the Chevrolet Bolt EV is battery fires. These fires have led to a recall of affected vehicles, and GM has been working on software updates to address the issue. The recall affects various model years, including the 2021 Bolt EV, and it is unclear whether the 2021 model year has been fully resolved.
The Bolt EV's electrical system has also been a source of complaints, with issues ranging from the infotainment system to the power windows and doors. While these issues may not be as severe as the battery problems, they can still be frustrating for owners and potentially lead to costly repairs.
In summary, the Chevrolet Bolt EV, including the 2021 model year, has been subject to several complaints from owners, primarily related to battery issues and electrical problems. While the specific details of these issues for the 2021 model year may not be as well-documented as for earlier model years, it is clear that the Bolt EV has had its share of problems, and owners should be aware of these issues before purchasing the vehicle.

Why are they discontinuing the Chevy Bolt?
GM needed the plant for other EVs
The Bolt and Bolt EUV are built at GM's Orion Assembly plant in Michigan. GM had already announced plans to retool that plant to ramp up production of the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV pickups in 2024. That same consideration killed the car journalist-beloved Volt hybrid.

Why is Chevy Bolt being discontinued?
“Bolt is selling better than it ever has since the company dropped the price. On the other hand, that probably also means that they're losing more money than they ever have on that car,” said Sam Abuelsamid, a principal analyst at Guidehouse Insights. “So, they don't want to keep it going longer.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-16
- VIN: 1G1FY6S01M4

- Summary: I believe the recall remedy gm n21345944 is not sufficient because it dies not monitor the system during the 80-100 % charge. It only allows ip to 80 which is not when it fails. Also it just gives an alert and does not shut down the battery which can allow the fure to happen. According to gm recall 212345940 a new battery was promised. I do not feel safe driving a car which has only been tested up to 80% range when that id not the failure mode. I want a new fixed battery.

- Summary: In nearly exactly the same fashion as Tesla, Chevrolet has reduced my battery range by 15-20% and they don't have any idea when or if they will restore what I've paid for.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-27
- VIN: 1G1FY6S08M4
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Our car (2021 Chevy Bolt) has been under recall N212345940 since September 2021 for a battery that could catch fire if charged to full capacity. The GM recall stated "when parts are available, your Chevrolet dealer will replace the defective lithium ion battery modules in your vehicle with new lithium ion battery modules." For almost 2 years we've been worried, unable to park our car in a garage or charge to 100%. In the interim, when I spoke to a Chevy salesperson who tried to sell me a newer model year Bolt, they informed me that all the used cars on the lot had already had their batteries replaced. On June 14th I got an email stating: Recall Status: "Remedy Available Recall Number: N212345944 High Voltage Battery May Melt or Burn". I was extremely excited and took the car in last week. As I left I realized that they had NOT replaced the battery, instead they programmed in a diagnostic tool to try and identify defective battery cells over the next 6000 miles. The recall on my vehicle is now marked complete, even though nothing has changed! The car now won't allow full charging and there's still a danger of fire on a deeply discharged battery. I feel deeply betrayed by the bate and switch and that they've been allowed to call this recall completed.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-06
- VIN: 1G1FW6S03M4
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While driving on the road, a sound came from under the car, and suddenly the car lost all propulsion power and was gliding on the road. The manufacturer told me the Manual Disconnect Lever was disconnected and Fuse was blown with no explanation on the root cause. After a few calls with the GM customer service, they explained to me "It happens", which to me it is unacceptable. This is a EV and fuse does not just randomly blown.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-23
- VIN: 1G1FY6S04M4
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I purchased a 2021 Bolt EV in mid-2021. I am disappointed in how GM handled the battery recall on my 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV. In Sept 2021 I received notice of safety recall N212345940 stating that the "Parts to repair your vehicle are not currently available" and I should "Set your vehicle to a 90 percent state of charge limitation". I did so and I patiently waited for the parts to arrive. Parts availability for this recall was unacceptably slow. I waited for 22 months for these parts - all the while my vehicle State of Charge (SOC) is diminished to 90%. Then in June 2023 GM changed their policy on this recall. The previous recall was marked as “completed”, even though I never received an indication that the parts to repair my vehicle became available. Instead recall N212345944 was issued. This recall installs “advanced diagnostic software that will monitor battery performance and identify defective battery modules”. Effectively it limits the SOC to 80% for 6200 miles. If there is an issue detected then the battery modules will, supposedly, be replaced. I have my doubts that this software will ever report such an occurrence. This is an extremely disappointing resolution for the customer. Now my vehicle's capacity is further reduced to 80% SOC for, potentially, another 6200 miles. GM sold me a car, and I paid for a car, that has 100% SOC. Thus far I have not had full use of my car and I have been driving it for 2+ years. Where is my compensation for being stuck with this diminished usage? I want to claw back 20% of my purchase price. Very badly done. I am an unhappy customer.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-16
- VIN: 1G1FY6S06M4
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The car can blow up and catch on fire due to excessive heat and humidity. Dealer is responsible for fixing it but it's been over 2 years and I want to end my lease early due to safety concerns. I have barely driven the car and kept it out of the garage (except for charging) but fire safety concerns are not being addressed by all Chevy dealers in Houston. No one can fix it and even if they did, it would take months so I want to turn it in to dealership and get someone to fix it so they can resell it safely. By driving and paying for this recall, I am at risk for death due to lithium battery explosion and no one is repairing it. Dealership notified of recall in Aug. 2021 and never contacted me about a solution, just told me to not charge it to 100% and keep it outside.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-05
- VIN: 1G1FY6S02M4
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV. The contact stated that he was made aware that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V650000 (Electrical System) upon research; however, the dealer was contacted and confirmed that the parts were not yet available for recall repair. The contact was informed that parts were available at another location. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue by the dealer and the contact was informed that there was no response. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-20
- VIN: 1G1FZ6S09M4
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The "High Voltage Battery May Melt or Burn" recall for my vehicle (2021 Bolt EV) still says "Remedy not yet available" 20 months after the recall was issued. This is unacceptable to not have a solution after this amount of time. Furthermore, Chevrolet is now misrepresenting the recall at their own website as "Incomplete", instead of the correct "Incomplete, Remedy not available" (at https://www.chevrolet.com/ownercenter/recalls?vin=
). I recently took my vehicle to have it repaired and they only offered me the repair for another fire-causing recall (seatbelt pretensioner), I couldn't even select this recall for repair.

- VIN: 1G1FY6S03M4
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Chevrolet issued a recall for our 2021 Bolt, Manufacturer Recall Number N212345940 NHTSA Recall Number 21V650 over a year ago. At the time of the recall issue in late 2021, we were told to bring in the car for service that would reduce the risk of fire by lowering the charge capacity to 80%. We did so and were told that the actual battery module replacement would be "any day now." We have contacted the Chevrolet EV Concierge (833-382-4389) several times over the past year, including today, Feb. 20, and each time we were told that the recall service would happen "soon," and that there was no way to estimate when it would occur. We have been told that the 2020-2022 models had recall service started in August 2021, proceeding "in batches." As it has been about 15 months since the recall was issued, we suspect that Chevrolet has no intention of performing this service in a timely fashion. We do not know the probability of a fire. We do not know when the full charge capacity will be restored, and this has constrained our ability to travel. Has NHTSA imposed a deadline or guideline for the recall completion? What is a reasonable time frame for a recall of this magnitude? 1 year? 3? 5? 10? As a car owner, 1 year would appear to be reasonable. However, we have little ability to hold Chevrolet to a reasonable standard and no knowledge of what percentage of the cars are done. We appeal to NHTSA to hold Chevrolet to a reasonable standard. Thank you for your time.

- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-30
- VIN: 1G1FY6S07M4
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The recall is not yet completed on the battery after more than a year. The range of my car is limited severely since I can neither charge the battery completely nor let the charge decline below about 30%, essentially reducing the range to 60% of what was promised. This is a known issue and GM has had plenty of time to fix it. I have contacted the dealer on many occasions and they have not been at all helpful.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-26
- VIN: 1G1FY6S06M4
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I received an email notifying me of a safety recall related to the propulsion battery on July 26, 2021. This notice did not offer an opportunity to schedule a repair. I have contacted my dealer periodically requesting a repair. On November 25, 2022, I received a text message specifying Recall # N212345941, which corresponds with a propulsion battery replacement. This text, and a subsequent notice by mail, offered my first opportunity to schedule the battery replacement. My local dealer is not authorized to make the repair. I have contacted a dealer authorized to make the repair, 70 miles away, and I am awaiting notice that the replacement battery is available to install. The delay in offering this repair has been unreasonable, and unsafe. Because my daily commute is long, mountainous, cold, and windy, I cannot safely limit my battery charge in the manner instructed in the initial recall notice. I have relied on the express warranty indicating I will be able to charge the propulsion battery to 100 percent, and I believe the sequence of recalls and delayed repair constitute a breach of express warranty, and a breach of an implied warranty of merchantability. This manufacturer should be systematically compensating its customers for supplying an inherently dangerous defective product, and for failing to repair the unsafe condition in a timely fashion. The defective propulsion battery has placed me and my family (and my passengers and neighbors) at risk of death due to fire and toxic smoke inhalation in the vehicle and in my driveway and attached garage. NHTSA should investigate both the deadly defect and the unnecessary and unreasonable delay in the repair offered by the manufacturer, and impose proper penalties. I will be pleased to participate in your investigation and provide any information you need, including testimony and other evidence. You should be aware I entered into a settlement agreement with GM to buy back a defective 2019 BoltEV (VIN 1G1FY6S07K4107084).

- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-21
- VIN: 1G1FZ6S05M4
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Four times during a cross country trip, after a Level 3 dc charging session, the car would either not start or if it did would not shut off. The gear could not be shifted into reverse or drive and the radio, AC all shut down even though the car was still on. The service soon indicator light came on. Diagnostics from ON-STAR said that it was the propulsion system. Another indicator light came on saying conditions not right shifting. The fifth time it occured while the car was moving and unlike the four previous times the gear couldn't be jiggled or temporarily rebooting the car by removing the 12-volt battery. The car had to be towed to the dealer where it was announced that drive control wiring harness needed to be replaced. This problem is well documented on GM Bolt forums. The car should have been recalled before my family was put at risk. I wasted 12 hours during a 19 hour move across the country due to this known problem. I was stranded in life threatening triple digit heat indices.

The car is really fast and has plenty of room for everyone. Even though it looks small, it fits my family of four just fine with enough space in the back for all our things. Although Chevy mishandled the battery issue, I finally got a new one and now my Bolt is better than ever!

I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing a new EV, so I decided to test the waters by buying a used BMW i3 with 20,000 miles on it. My daily requirement was 70 miles, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the i3 was able to run on all-electric power on most days. Over the course of three years, I drove about 20,000 miles per year. Recently, I came across the new 2020 Bolt from Chevrolet, which had an impressive reduction in price and came with almost every option. The larger battery pack made it possible for me to travel between distant cities with ease. Whenever I need to go somewhere with my wife, we always take the Bolt. According to the manufacturer, it's supposed to cost me $500 a year to charge, but I charge it at night under time of use, and I don't think it costs me more than $70 or $80 a year. My car has a number of safety features and rides smoothly, making it perfect for my daily commute.

I’ve owned this gem for 16 months and driven 25,400 miles without any problems. I drive a fair amount of highway and city driving, and average about 118 MPGe. The car is fun to drive, reliable, and inexpensive to operate. It also has a rear view mirror camera and a 360 degree view camera, and the HVAC works quickly. The only downsides are the flimsy carpet and the factory tires, which are not that great and can be noisy on the highway. Overall, I think it's a great car and I would definitely buy one again.

This is my second Bolt, previous one was a leased '18. No problems whatsoever. That being said, I wasn't impressed with GM's battery recall issue. First, I grounded my '18 due to initial battery recall but was promised by the dealer the '20's wouldn't be affected in January of '21. I DID get a great deal, however. By August of '21, it too was recalled. January of '22, I got the software update limiting it to 80% charge. Finally got battery replacement in December of '22, new battery warranty of 100k/8yr. Flawless both before and since. But now the Bolt is in its last year of production. But, hints of a gen 3 ultium platform in the future. I hope so, as I don't want a bigger model. I charge at home and have little use for the commercial charging infrastructure. I have a great dealer (Holiday Chevy in Fond du Lac, WI.) I've paid less than $60 in maintenance fees in 4.5+ years of ownership and pay about $0.015 per mile for "fuel". What's not to love???

We love our 2021 Chevy Bolt! It's an affordable entry-level electric vehicle that's perfect for getting around town. Although there have been some issues with the battery pack, GM has assured us that our pack will be replaced with an 8-year warranty, which makes us very happy. In the two years we've owned it, we've only had to spend $20 on maintenance, which was just for a tire rotation at 7500 miles. Overall, we couldn't be happier!

Although my car is currently under a major recall, I am confident that it will be fixed promptly and efficiently.

Since purchasing the car last March, I have noticed a decrease in mileage on every charge. I use the 240 charger and despite having only 3910 miles on the car, a full charge now only gives me 203 miles. One full charge was only 171 miles. I returned the car to the dealer in October and they did a diagnostic, which showed that everything was working properly, including the batteries. I am concerned about the continued loss of mileage at each charge and wonder what the mileage on a full charge will be in 3 years. Perhaps there are others who have experienced this issue or do I have a lemon? When I returned the vehicle, I asked the dealer for a full refund, but unfortunately, they refused. I really needed the full charge mileage of 259 miles to travel to a VA clinic that is 172 miles round trip. It's impossible to make that distance on a full charge of 171 miles. What should I do?

The EV is impressive, however, the battery recall has caused inconvenience. It is recommended to only charge the battery to 80% until it is replaced, which may affect the range. The timeline for the replacement is currently unknown.

Hi there! Congrats on your new electric car! I wanted to share some of my experiences with you. One thing I learned is that the time it takes to recharge the car is really important. With my 2020 Bolt, if I discharge it below 50%, it takes a couple of hours to recharge at a DC fast charge station. Another issue I've had is that the battery seems to be losing power quickly. Although it's rated at 259 miles when fully charged, I've noticed that with under 6500 miles on my car, it only shows a range of 175 miles when fully charged. Based on my experience, I would suggest waiting for improvements in batteries and charging before buying an electric car. Additionally, I found that the trade-in value for my 2020 Bolt, which had a list price of $40000, is under $19000. Hope this helps!

I've owned this car for almost three years and I absolutely loved it until I received a recall notice about the battery that GM has yet to fix. I'm now hesitant to park it too close to my house. I offered to buy a new one, but unfortunately, there aren't any available for sale. It's been a bit frustrating, but I'm hopeful that a solution will be found soon.
