2022 Chevrolet Bolt ev problems

The Chevrolet Bolt EV (marketed in Europe as Opel Ampera-e) is a battery electric subcompact hatchback produced by General Motors under the Chevrolet marque. The Bolt was produced from late 2016 to mid-2021, subsequently restarting in early 2022, until late 2023. In mid-2023, GM officials said they would cancel the car, then three months later announced plans but no date for a next-generation model.

The first generation was developed and manufactured with LG Corporation. Sales of the 2017 Bolt began in California in December 2016, it was released nationwide and international markets release in 2017. A rebadged European variant was marketed as the Opel Ampera-e in mainland Europe.

In 2017, the Bolt was the second-best-selling plug-in car in the United States. It was named the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the 2017 North American Car of the Year, an Automobile magazine 2017 All Star, and was listed in Time magazine's Best 25 Inventions of 2016. The Ampera-e was discontinued after 2018. By the end of 2020, GM had sold 112,000 Bolt and Ampera-e cars worldwide.

The first-generation Bolt has been subject to at least three recalls. At least 16 Bolts have caught fire, leading to a recall to fix or replace battery components and GM's August 2021 advisory to park in open areas, at least 50 feet (15 m) away from other vehicles.

  4. Stop-Sale Order:
    • Issue: Due to the battery problems, there is a stop-sale order in effect for the 2022 Bolt EV, preventing new purchases until the issues are resolved.
    • Recommendation: GM advises caution and patience, suggesting that potential buyers wait until the ongoing recall fixes are completed.
  5. Interior Comfort and Features:
    • Positive Aspect: Owners appreciate the interior comfort, spaciousness, and modernized features of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV.
    • Feedback: Despite the reported issues, many owners find the Bolt EV to be a comfortable and practical electric vehicle option.

These problems highlight the importance of addressing safety concerns, ensuring efficient powertrain operation, and enhancing the overall user experience of the Chevrolet Bolt EV.

Does 2022 Bolt have battery issues?

As you might imagine, affected Bolt owners are up in arms. GM initiated a recall in 2021 after a small number of Bolts high voltage batteries caught fire. The battery replacements were to take place on all pre-existing Bolts with the affected LG battery packs. Basically, every 2017-2022 Chevy Bolt.

What is the issue with Chevy Bolt?

However, the Bolt has had its troubles. Chevy had to issue two recalls for the Bolts in recent years over concerns that battery issues could cause the cars to catch fire. Bolt owners were advised to park their vehicles outdoors once the battery was charged.

Why are they discontinuing the Chevy Bolt?

GM needed the plant for other EVs

The Bolt and Bolt EUV are built at GM's Orion Assembly plant in Michigan. GM had already announced plans to retool that plant to ramp up production of the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV pickups in 2024. That same consideration killed the car journalist-beloved Volt hybrid.

Why is Chevy killing the Bolt?

The sudden backpedaling came after the continued surge in Bolt sales and the production costs and expected selling price of the upcoming newer models continuing to increase. Meaning the Bolt would not be competing in the same price range. Sales picked up because they started to basically give them away in 2021.

  • Summary: I was driving 72 mph, and went to accelerate to 75 mph to set my cruise control. As soon as I stepped on the accelerator pedal, my 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV jerked violently and immediately applied braking to car to take it from 72 mph to about 30 mph within 1 second. Had someone been behind me I would have been rear ended. I was able to pull over to the shoulder of the road, and put my car into park. I was unable to turn off the vehicle or shift into any gears (reverse, neutral, drive). The car displayed a warning on dash "power drive train malfunction pull over safely". There was no warning for the sudden deceleration and is a serious safety risk and concern.

Just as we exited the parking lot, there was nothing in front and the brakes came on and the car turned off and would not restart for a few minutes. The same day, we were on the way home I was traveling about 35mph. All of a sudden the brakes came on again. This time there was nothing in front but many cars behind, so I floored the accelerator the car tires screeched. I was less than a mile from home and made it without incident. The dealership is unable to reproduce or review the logs because the vehicle stopped logging everything since December 4th. The car is in my driveway and I don't trust it can safely be driven. The dealership is not helpful by telling me to just monitor the situation and bring it in if it happens again. I am seeing on the internet that there are many people experiencing this exact problem.

  • VIN: 1G1FW6S08N4
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Around 5 PM on 10/7/22 I was driving on Purcell Road in Manassas VA. The car has a 60% charge on it EV battery showing a range of around 170 miles. As I was driving I felt the Chevrolet Bolt stutter twice, as if it was loosing power. Then, when I stopped at the stop light at Purcell and Hoadly the car shifted into park and would not shift into any other gear, including neutral. Any attempts to shift would give an error warning "Conditions Not Correct for Shift" In addition to being unable to move the car out of the intersection, the car could not be shut down. Pressing the power button would make the screen flicker for a moment and then it would power itself back on with the same "Conditions Not Correct for Shift" error. Onstar was called about the problem and shortly after the police arrived to tow the car. The car was a traffic hazard since it could not be put into neutral to get it out of traffic. The car was taken to Lindsay Chevrolet Service Center (15605 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Woodbridge, VA 22191) for diagnostic and repairs. They have reported that the problem was a wiring harness.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-07
  • VIN: 1G1FW6S08N4
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was driving the vehicle approx 35mph on a surface street when it suddenly lost propulsion. There was no warning. The display suddenly showed 0 rand and 0% high voltage battery SOC. I had to cross multiple lanes of rush hour traffic with no propulsion to coast to a stop. Once parked the vehicle would not go in gear and would not move. It was towed to a dealer where a blown manual service disconnect lever (high voltage battery fuse) was found to be blown. The dealer determined the root cause to be a faulty level 2 charging station I used earlier in the day. After contacting the charging station vender there was no fault found with the station and no other complaints filed with its operation. The fuse blew 6 miles after being charged, not while it was charging. I asked for the dealer to contact Chevrolet engineering and they declined. I contacted Chevrolet customer service and was not able to speak with anyone that is familiar with their EV products.

Negative 2022 Chevrolet Bolt ev car reviews

I purchased my Bolt EV in June 2023 with only 5400 miles on it. The seats are very comfortable, and it's a fun car to drive. The EV range is great, and I love the cargo storage. Unfortunately, in November (at 9600 miles), I experienced some issues with the steering locking up. The dealership informed me that it needs a new steering column, which is surprising given the low mileage. However, there is a nationwide part shortage, and there is no ETA on when the parts will be available. As a result, my car has been sitting at the dealership for two months now. I am planning to file a Lemon Law claim and will consider other car brands in the future.

Although my car is currently under a major recall, I am confident that it will be fixed promptly and efficiently.

It's disappointing that the charging time is quite long and it's unlikely that you'll ever get the full 247 miles due to concerns about battery safety resulting in a reduced charge to 80%. It might be worth considering Tesla as an alternative.

My spouse and I absolutely love this car! Although GM took a while to address the battery issue, we personally don't mind charging up to 80% of battery capacity, as it doesn't affect us much except on very long trips. We adore the regenerative braking and the user-friendly controls. The car handles well and we've found that using a level 2 charger at home is both hassle-free and cost-effective. The seats are also incredibly comfortable. We also own a 2019 Prius Prime (plug-in hybrid), but we definitely prefer our Bolt.

Awesome vehicle! It's great to hear that you're happy with your purchase. I understand that you were hoping for some additional features, such as 8-way drivers and passengers seats, and a more convenient way to locate charging stations. It's frustrating that the GM app isn't compatible with your iPhone 6s. However, it's great to hear that you're enjoying the fit and finish of the vehicle, as well as the sturdy and comfortable seating. While it may be heavy at 3200 lbs, it certainly has impressive get up and go, and is so smooth and quiet. It's also great to hear that the vehicle exceeded your expectations in terms of size and appearance. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with your purchase. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

We love our 2021 Chevy Bolt! It's an affordable entry-level electric vehicle that's perfect for getting around town. Although there have been some issues with the battery pack, GM has assured us that our pack will be replaced with an 8-year warranty, which makes us very happy. In the two years we've owned it, we've only had to spend $20 on maintenance, which was just for a tire rotation at 7500 miles. Overall, we couldn't be happier!

I recently traded in my Cyber Gray 2020 Bolt EV for cash to offset the cost of my 2022 BMW X4M Competition. Looking back, it wasn't the smartest move since the BMW barely gets 20 MPG. However, I soon realized how much I missed my Bolt EV and regretted selling it. After only two weeks, I found myself browsing the internet for the new refreshed 2022 Bolt EV and ended up purchasing a 2021 Bolt EV. It was heavily discounted and I couldn't resist the temptation, especially since I love the fun factor of driving the Chevy Bolt EV. Not only that, but I'm also saving money on gas since I no longer have to put $65/week in the BMW. Although the Bolt EV may not be the most luxurious EV out there, it's definitely fun to drive, reliable, and has a spacious cabin with some pretty good technology. Plus, I consistently average 280 miles per charge between my former 2020 and now the new 2021 Bolt EV. In summary, the Chevy Bolt EV is a nerdy, fun, reliable, and addicting car to own. You won't regret getting one!
