2019 Chevrolet Bolt ev problems
The Chevrolet Bolt EV (marketed in Europe as Opel Ampera-e) is a battery electric subcompact hatchback produced by General Motors under the Chevrolet marque. The Bolt was produced from late 2016 to mid-2021, subsequently restarting in early 2022, until late 2023. In mid-2023, GM officials said they would cancel the car, then three months later announced plans but no date for a next-generation model.
The first generation was developed and manufactured with LG Corporation. Sales of the 2017 Bolt began in California in December 2016, it was released nationwide and international markets release in 2017. A rebadged European variant was marketed as the Opel Ampera-e in mainland Europe.
In 2017, the Bolt was the second-best-selling plug-in car in the United States. It was named the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the 2017 North American Car of the Year, an Automobile magazine 2017 All Star, and was listed in Time magazine's Best 25 Inventions of 2016. The Ampera-e was discontinued after 2018. By the end of 2020, GM had sold 112,000 Bolt and Ampera-e cars worldwide.
The first-generation Bolt has been subject to at least three recalls. At least 16 Bolts have caught fire, leading to a recall to fix or replace battery components and GM's August 2021 advisory to park in open areas, at least 50 feet (15 m) away from other vehicles.

Common 2019 Chevrolet Bolt ev problems
The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV has been subject to various recalls and complaints from owners, primarily related to its electrical system, propulsion, and battery problems.
One of the most significant issues is the faulty battery problem, which has led to recalls in 2020 and 2021. This issue can cause the battery to catch fire when charged to full or nearly full capacity. As an interim repair, dealers reprogram the hybrid propulsion control module 2 (HPCM2) to limit the full charge to 90%. The final remedy for this issue is still under development.
Another common problem is related to the propulsion system. Some owners have reported that the car's electrical propulsion gradually reduces to a maximum output power of roughly 20KW after driving for about 60-75 minutes at highway speeds. This issue can result in the vehicle traveling on the interstate at roughly 45-55 mph, which can be dangerous in areas with minimum speed limits of 55mph.
The steering system has also been a source of complaints, with some owners reporting that the steering does not return to center when making turns. This issue is due to a faulty steering gear and can cost up to $3500 to repair.
Electrical system malfunctions have also been reported, with some owners experiencing issues with the charging unit that plugs into the vehicle. The battery had to be disconnected for approximately 5 minutes and then reconnected to the terminal to resolve the issue. The door that covered the socket where the plug was inserted also failed to seal correctly, causing intermittent failures.
Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the car's electrical/hybrid battery pack malfunctioning, causing the car to refuse to take a charge. This issue did not require battery replacement but affected the vehicle's ability to charge properly.
Other complaints include issues with the charge connection, charge port door, and problems with the car's software. Some owners have reported that the car won't charge at home or won't work with some public chargers. Others have reported that the car won't fully charge, causing range anxiety and inconvenience.
In summary, the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV has had several common problems related to its electrical system, propulsion, and battery. These issues have led to recalls and complaints from owners, affecting the vehicle's reliability and safety.

What is the life expectancy of a Chevy Bolt?
The battery in the Chevy Bolt EV or Bolt EUV is guaranteed to get at least 8 years or 100,000 miles out of a new battery.
Why is Chevy Bolt being discontinued?
“Bolt is selling better than it ever has since the company dropped the price. On the other hand, that probably also means that they're losing more money than they ever have on that car,” said Sam Abuelsamid, a principal analyst at Guidehouse Insights. “So, they don't want to keep it going longer.

Is Chevy Bolt a good EV car?
Highs Tempting starting price, spacious interior for a mini-car, reasonable driving range. Lows No all-wheel-drive option, feels like the low-cost solution it is. Verdict The all-electric Bolt EV's low, low starting price makes it an attractive electrified alternative to sexier and more costly EVs.
Why did Chevrolet stop making the Bolt?
The Chevy Bolt EV, released in late 2016, and the larger EUV (Electric Utility Vehicle), introduced in 2021, are both being axed—but not for lack of demand. Sales of the mass-market models have been clocking record highs. However, the battery cells in the cars are now outdated, Barra said.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- VIN: 1G1FZ6S04K4
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The steering wheel is very stiff; if you turn left or right, when you complete the turn, if you were to release the wheel, it does not counter-turn back towards the center. Put differently - in an open parking lot, you could turn the wheel all the way to one side, release the wheel, press the accelerator --- and you'd go in circles. This has been happening for some time, but just recently had it pointed out that it is not normal. I feel its a meaningful safety risk. I researched the issue online and it seems that it is common for this model but GM has been unresponsive.

- Summary: Around 46,000 miles this 5 yr old car began making popping sounds in the steering. Took into dealer and diagnosed steering rack failure and intermediate shaft. Cost to repair was close to $3,000. Looking into this, this is a common issue with Chevy Bolts due to poorly designed boots on the rack. This should be covered by a recall when failing so early. Happened to my previous 2018 Bolt too but the car was totaled in an accident prior to me undergoing the repair.

- VIN: 1G1FZ6S0XK4
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Vehicle steering does not return to center when exiting a gradual turn. This occurs intermittently. On line research indicates that this problem is likely the result of a faulty steering rack and that many other owners have experienced this behavior; as this could result in a dangerous situation I am reporting. The vehicle has about 43,000 miles on it. I have not had it repaired as yet.

- Summary: This is concerning a 2019 Chevy Bolt purchased new on [XXX] from Stewart Chevrolet in Colma, CA. Around January 2024, we realized the vehicle's steering wheel was not returning to center on its own, and it took more force than usual to turn the wheel -- it would stick as you turned it. The vehicle had about 26,861 miles when we noticed this steering issue. When performing a turn (at low speeds and on the highway) the steering wheel would remain in the turned configuration until you manually moved it back to center. The dealer advised us that the steering gear would need to be replaced. We replaced the steering gear on [XXX] at Stewart Chevrolet in Colma, CA. However, though the steering was improved the problem was not totally fixed; the steering would still stick and the wheel took more force than expected to turn. We had the car re-evaluated and on [XXX] the Stewart Chevrolet again replaced the steering gear; this did not fix the issue. Finally, Stewart Chevrolet has recommended that we replace the steering column. We haven't done this yet because we are still trying to get GM to cover the cost of repairs. A vehicle with such low mileage should not need these repairs, and if you search online you will find many other Chevy Bolt owners across all models years having these issues. Please investigate and determine whether a recall is advised. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
- VIN: 1G1FZ6S04K4
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The steering rack failed. It is currently at the dealership waiting for parts to come in so it can be replaced. The car started making noises when making sweeping turns. The noise got worse and the steering was not coming back to center coming out of turns. We had it inspected at our local mechanic and they told us it needed a new steering rack but they were not able to complete the repair because it was complicated to get into the part that needed to be replaced. We took it to the Chevrolet dealership and they confirmed it needs a new steering rack as well as other related parts. There were no warning lights or messages. The car first started making faint noises about a month ago when doing low speed turns in a parking lot. Noise has been getting louder and we started to notice the steering not responding correctly. Only have one invoice for diagnosis, have not yet received invoice for repair.

- Summary: The steering rack on my 2019 Chevy Bolt failed and had to be replaced. It was unsafe to drive the vehicle because the steering wheel would not return to center by itself. When making a turn, the driver had to force the steering wheel back to center. The dealer tried to fix this faulty condition last August by replacing the intermediate steering shaft. It marginally improved the condition but it was still not returning the steering wheel to center by itself. I reluctantly accepted this condition as normal because I thought the dealer tech thought it was normal. However, the steering got progressively more dangerous and required more and more effort to return the steering wheel to center. I took my vehicle into the dealer on March 3, 2024 and the dealer determined the steering rack was defective and needed to be replaced. I got my Bolt back today and now the steering works properly. I no longer fear that the steering will lock up and cause me to lose control of the vehicle. I see on the Chevy Bolt Forum that others have experienced my Bolt steering problem. I just wanted to report my problem so the NTSHA can add my problem to the list of complaints.

- Summary: Our 2019 Chevy Bolt experienced some of kind of steering issue where the car made a "clicking" type of noise when making slight or big turns to the left or the right. We brought the car to our Chevy dealer who diagnosed the issue as a faulty steering gear and tie rod with both parts needing to be replaced. The dealer told us that the Chevy Bolts are known to be "fragile" when it comes to this issue and that hitting a pot hole could cause this level of damage. We could have driven over a pot hole under normal driving conditions but did not have a specific incident in mind that could have caused this. There were no warning lamps or other messaging other than the sound we could hear during turns. While the parts are not that expensive, the labor is - the cost of the repair with the parts is $3,400

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-09
- VIN: 1G1FZ6S05K4
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving on the freeway at 65 mph during morning rush-hour, the vehicle unexpectedly decelerated without warning and came to a stop. The vehicle was barely able to make it to the shoulder before losing all momentum. There is a high-risk of a fatal collision when a vehicle unexpectedly stops or drastically slows on a freeway with 65 - 70 mph traffic, which is compounded during peak travel times. This is a risk to not only the vehicle occupants, but other drivers and vehicles as well. Several error messages were displayed on the dashboard as the car was decelerating: Drivetrain malfunction: Stop and turn off engine; Service high voltage battery system; Service Vehicle Soon; Unable to shift. The battery range dropped from just under 50% (~115 mi) to 0 while attempting to pull over on the shoulder. After the vehicle was stopped, it was unable to be powered off for about an hour. It was not successful in shifting or moving and the battery range showed 0. An hour and a half (1.5 hours) after the incident, the vehicle would power on and show a battery range between 121 - 110, which would drop to 0 within 15 seconds with a message that it is unable to charge. At the time of the incident, OnStar sent an email stating that "A critical issue with the engine and transmission system in your 2019 Chevy Bolt has been detected. Please service your vehicle immediately." The battery had been replaced the week of February 5th, 2023 per several product safety recall notices . There was one issue on February 18th, 2023 that the battery range was not updating, but it corrected itself after being parked for 3 hours. There were no other previous issues or indications of a problem prior to vehicle malfunction. The vehicle is currently being diagnosed by a dealer. It is currently available for inspection. The electrical, propulsion, and powertrain (and possibly speed control) systems did not function properly.

- Summary: When making turns, the steering does not return to center. I must move the steering wheel to straighten the wheels to continue forward. I researched the issue and have found that this is a common complaint with the Bolt. From what I have read, this is due to a faulty steering gear. I called the dealer, and although there is a service advisory, this not a warranty or recall situation. I was quoted $3500 to repair this issue.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-08
- VIN: 1G1FY6S07K4
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: After driving the car for roughly 60-75 minutes while at highway speeds and within the posted speed limits: 65mph-75mph, the car will chime and the driver information panel will flash "Propulsion Reduced." At that point, the vehicle's electrical propulsion will gradually reduce to a maximum output power of roughly 20KW. The propulsion will stay capped at 20KW for a bit of time (15-20 minutes) and then gradually the cap will increase. Unfortunately, on I-25 in southern Colorado where this usually occurs, the speed limit is 75mph and and 20KW of propulsion results in the vehicle traveling on the interstate at roughly 45-55mph which results in very unsafe situations. That road has a minimum speed of 55mph. This happened on the first day that I purchased the car, I can reproduce it with my family in the car, but the dealer has been unable to reproduce it. I have had the Chevrolet dealership inspect it multiple times, but they can not find a fault. It has happened when ambient temperatures are as low as 28F and as high as 98F there does not appear to be a correlation there. I have had it happen when the battery has a SOC of 70% and as low as 25%, that also does not show a correlation. I have seen a correlation with passengers/weight in the vehicle as that requires more KW of output to propel the car. Likewise, consistent average speed has a correlation. If traveling at 75mph (posted speed limit) the propulsion reduction will occur sooner rather than traveling at 73mph.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-28
- VIN: 1G1FZ6S08K4
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was driving on a highway access road when my Chevy Bolt's automatic emergency braking system suddenly and unexpectedly applied the brakes. I have noticed that the proximity warning system is fairly sensitive - often beeping even when I am applying brakes to decelerate at a rate that feels comfortable and reasonable to me given the distance of the vehicle in front of me. In this instance, however, there was no beeping of the warning system. Additionally, I was not closing the distance between my vehicle and the one in front of me, nor were they braking. I was concerned that the unexpected and unnecessary emergency braking could have caused me to be rear-ended had a vehicle been behind me. It was very heavy braking - disproportionate to the distance and speed between myself and the vehicle in front of me.

- Summary: This is for the recall N222383791 (SEATBELT PRETENSIONER FIRE) that was issued on 12/15/2022. The Remedy has been identified as dealers installing metal foil on the carpet near the pretensioner exhaust. Certain vehicles will also need a pretensioner cover installed. It was said that a remedy would be available at dealerships around 1/30/2023. It is now 3/10/2033 nearly three months after the remedy was identified, and it's still not possible to get it repaired at dealerships. This complaint is that the manufacturer hasn't remedied this safety recall in a timely manner.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

- VIN: 1G1FZ6S08K4
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Vehicle without warning stopped moving while making a left turn in an intersection at night. Power to dashboard was on but no propulsion, brakes or steering. Was unable to put car into gear to move forward or in reverse. Message was displayed, "Unable to Initalize Propulsion System" Extremely dangerous situation, I turned on flashers and left car in intersection. Called tow truck. When tow truck arrived, we pushed car to curb and he hauled it away. Cheverolet dealer diagnosed the problem as a defective wiring harness. He said there was a GM alert regarding this as a known issue that led him to the defective wiring harness. They charged $1567 to replace it which included $1200 in labor and recommended I contact GM to see if they would compensate me since it was a known issue and the car was only 2 months off warrantee. GM refused to compensate me for the faulty harness. The Bolt has 19K miles on it, is kept in a garage and has never been in an accident.

I recently decided to switch to an electric vehicle after getting tired of the constant repairs and maintenance on my German auto. My wife and I are really enjoying our new Chevy Bolt, even though the interior is a bit plain. It's still comfortable and incredibly spacious, although we do wish it had some additional interior amenities like dual climate control, power seats, and a sunroof. The car has plenty of power and acceleration, and we love the fact that we no longer have to deal with gas, oil changes, and frequent maintenance. The onboard tech information is also very useful and covers everything we need to know. Overall, we're thrilled with our decision to switch to an electric vehicle and have no interest in going back to another European money pit. It's great to see electric vehicles becoming a more practical and appealing option.

Hey there! If you're interested in electric cars, it's a great idea to educate yourself on how they work and how to address any concerns you might have, like 'range anxiety'.

I love this car! It's such a blast to drive with its great handling and acceleration. The torque and acceleration of this vehicle remind me of the VW GTI I used to drive a few years ago. I can't help but laugh with joy as I spin out the tires and leave macho trucks and muscle cars behind. The sport button effect is like the hyper-drive knob on the Millennium Falcon, and I feel like shouting, 'Punch it Chewie!' as I push it and get thrown back into my seat. The seats are a bit small, but they fit me just fine. The heated seats are good, but the heated steering wheel is absolutely amazing! I can't believe I've gone so long without it. The rear camera mirror takes some getting used to, but it provides an excellent field of view without worrying about passengers blocking your view. The back-up camera is low resolution, but the bird's-eye view helps you park perfectly and squeeze into tight spaces. The interior is spacious enough for four people, and there's plenty of trunk room. I've been getting between 200 to 300 miles between charges, even with my inner speed-demon coming out. One-pedal driving is easy to get used to, and it reminds me of my GTI days when I would down-shift instead of braking. I hardly ever use the brake on this vehicle because it has plenty of acceleration and torque to get you out of traffic issues. I'm thoroughly impressed with GM's first true attempt at an all-electric vehicle. The future looks very bright for this industry, and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Bolt is an excellent value in an electric vehicle. It has a long range of 232 miles, peppy acceleration, solid tech, and is a perfect down-the-road everyday driver. It's a fun car to own and a great value for the price.

Our first electric car was an absolute delight to drive! It had instant acceleration, was easy to park (thanks to the good rear camera), and had lots of electronic extras that made the ride safer (like the side cameras) and more enjoyable (such as the heated seats). Although we did experience some intermittent connectivity issues with Apple Car Play, and the radio always came on full blast when the car was shut off but before the door was opened, we still loved it. The only downside was that the back seat wasn't ideal for full-sized adults. Overall, we enjoyed it so much that we decided to lease the newer model.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my thoughts on the vehicle I test drove recently. While it did not make it to the top of my list, I did find some positive aspects to it. However, I did find the seats to be quite uncomfortable and the ride over bumps to be a bit jarring. If you are in the market for an EV, I would highly recommend test driving the E-golf or Nissan Leaf as I found them to be better driving options. Additionally, I found the technology in the car to be less than desirable. That being said, if you are on a budget, this car may still be a good option for you. Thank you for considering my thoughts on this matter.

I have experienced two quality issues with my 2018 Bolt, specifically with the entrainment system and battery. Unfortunately, the battery issue left me stranded 40 miles from home as the car would not charge. Despite these setbacks, I remain confident in the capabilities of the Bolt. While the mileage has been disappointing, I am actively working with my dealership to address these concerns and improve my driving experience. I am confident that with the right support, I will be able to achieve the desired mileage and continue to enjoy my Bolt for years to come.

The car drives great! It has zippy acceleration and a pretty accurate range estimate. The DC fast charge works really well. A lot of safety features came with the model I picked. While the front end collision warning can be a little overzealous at times, overall the safety features are very helpful. Unfortunately, the entertainment system was terrible. The feature and quality looks like Chevrolet never had such a system before. For example, when the car is turned on again, it remembers what the volume was set at, but it does not remember whether it was turned off or not. This, combined with CarPlay needing a higher volume setting than the radio, often results in really loud radio playing when the car is turned on, which is very annoying. The worst part is that the entertainment system would lock up from time to time, mostly upon turning on the car. I had to wait for some time for it to reboot. I later googled and found out the two finger solute to get it to reset faster. When it reboots, the heater and AC both turn on, and the fans blast to the max. Electronically, this car felt like it was still in the old times. There are no over-the-air software updates, and the app is a joke. The entertainment system user interface is awkward.

Over the past two weeks, I have test driven a range of electric cars including the Ioniq (2017), Leaf (2018), Egolf (2017), and the Bolt (2019). While the Bolt has excellent range, I personally did not find it to be as impressive as the others. In terms of driving and interior finish, I found it to be inferior. The Golf, which is often considered the most pedestrian performer, was actually more refined, comfortable, better finished, and more fun to drive. The Bolt had a distinctive electrical whine that I did not hear in any other car. Additionally, the seats were not very comfortable and felt narrow, even for someone of my height (5ft 8in). The instrumentation layout with the fully digital display was not to my liking, and the interior materials had a cheap plastic-y look. However, if range is the most important factor for you, then the Bolt is by no means a bad car. As a commuter, it did not meet my expectations based on my research.

The car comes with an analogue FM radio, which is a 1933 American technology by Edwin Armstrong. However, it does not have HD radio (Digital FM). It also has a satellite radio, but it may not be the best option for everyone. There are 2 USB ports available for Hi-Fi audio. The front door speakers are two-way (door woofer & dash tweeters) and are of good quality. However, the rear one-way speaker needs to be replaced. The door alignments are traditional American big 3, which may not be fully aligned. Unfortunately, there is no 3-minute automatic arming, which means that you always have to arm your car with the remote. Please note that the back-up camera may not be reliable for back-up parking, so it is recommended to use the 2 side mirrors for single try back-up parking. The electric engine is Korean made, which is a good thing. The battery is the main attraction of this car.
