The Cadillac DTS is a full-size car that was built by the American company Cadillac from 2005 until May 2011. It is a four-door sedan that comes in five- or six-seat variants. The DTS debuted at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show and was manufactured at GM's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly factory. It uses GM's G-platform for front-engine, front-wheel-drive automobiles. The DTS was a very mildly revised iteration of the eighth-generation Deville, using the brand's new naming convention, set by the CTS and STS. Writing for the Los Angeles Times, noted reviewer Warren Brown called the DTS "a large, exceptionally comfortable front-wheel-drive luxury sedan." The nameplate DTS is an acronym for DeVille Touring Sedan.

Production and specifications

Compared to its Deville predecessor, the DTS was mildly restyled rather than fully redesigned, featuring revised front-end sheet metal, front fascia, as well as rear decklid, rear quarter, and rear fascia.

The DTS used GM's G-platform, as denoted by the 4th letter in the VIN), and was powered by a transverse 32V Northstar V8, which produced 275 bhp (205 kW) in "Standard", "Luxury" and "Premium" trims. The DTS Platinum was equipped with 292 bhp (218 kW) version.

The base MSRP for the DTS at time of introduction was US$41,195 (equivalent to $64,300 in 2023) which was over 10% lower than the DeVille model it had replaced.

The DTS offered front bucket seats with overall seating for five passengers, and six passenger (i.e., front bench) seating available as an optional feature.

Standard features included multiple airbags, bi-functional xenon high-intensity discharge HID headlamps, leather seating surfaces, and power seats. Optional equipment included heated and cooled front seats and a heated rear seat, rain-sensing wipers, Bose audio system, DVD navigation, automatic dimming headlights, adaptive cruise control and Magnetic Ride Control suspension. A Platinum package became available in 2007 with special interior trim, badging, and other amenities.

GM phased out its small GM fender badges for all its vehicles, starting during the 2010 model year, including those on the DTS.

Common 2011 Cadillac Dts problems

The Cadillac DTS, produced from 2006 to 2011, is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues are primarily related to the engine, electrical system, and other components.

One of the most common problems with the Cadillac DTS is engine issues. Owners have reported various engine-related problems, including headlight shorting out intermittently.

Another common problem with the Cadillac DTS is oil leaks from the lower engine area. This issue can be caused by various factors, including worn-out gaskets or seals. Oil leaks can be messy and may lead to more severe problems if not addressed promptly.

The steering wheel position sensor is another component that has been known to fail in the Cadillac DTS. This failure can cause the service stability light to come on, which can be a safety concern while driving. The sensor is located at the base of the steering column and may require removal of the column for replacement

Fluid leaks from rubber transmission cooler lines are also a common problem with the Cadillac DTS. These lines can wear out over time, leading to fluid leaks that can affect the vehicle's transmission performance.

In addition to these problems, the Cadillac DTS has also been subject to several recalls. For example, the 2010 model year was recalled due to the tire and loading information label not being installed on the vehicle, which failed to comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

In summary, the Cadillac DTS is known for several common problems, including engine issues, oil leaks, steering wheel position sensor failure, and fluid leaks from rubber transmission cooler lines. While these issues can be concerning, they are not uncommon for vehicles of this age and type. It is essential to address any problems promptly to ensure the vehicle's safety and reliability.

2011 Cadillac Dts recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2011 Cadillac Dts.

2014-06-23
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
2010-11-05
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES
  • Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 DTS AND BUICK LUCERNE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH V8 ENGINES. THE STARTER OR ALTERNATOR CABLE IS IN CONTACT WITH THE POWER STEERING RETURN LINE. IF EITHER THE STARTER OR ALTERNATOR CABLE IS CONTACTING THE POWER STEERING RETURN LINE, THE CABLE COULD WEAR THROUGH THE LINE, CAUSING A POWER STEERING FLUID LEAK.
  • Consequence: A POWER STEERING LEAK COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH, AND/OR THE LEAK ONTO HOT ENGINE PARTS COULD CAUSE AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL SECURE AND IF NECESSARY REROUTE THE LINES TO PREVENT CONTACT. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 19, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080 AND AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Negative 2011 Cadillac Dts car reviews

  1. Manuel Volkman 2024-09-27

This car handles like a large cabin cruiser, and despite being brand new, the front passenger window is currently not functioning. However, I am confident in its overall quality and performance.

  2. Abdiel Goldner 2024-08-06

I have owned my DTS for 2 years now (23,000MI) and I feel confident in saying that, having previously owned a 09 Avalon, there is simply no comparison. The Avalon pales in comparison to the superior DTS. It seems that the gentleman who claimed there was no comparison had not driven the DTS. I did experience some front wheel balancing issues initially, but after a few attempts, the problem was resolved. While the fit and finish of both the interior and exterior are not perfect, they are still quite good. There is some road and wind noise, but it is not too noticeable, and the engine noise is not bothersome. While some may only buy the DTS for the name, I believe it is a great car overall. I made the mistake of buying it for that reason, but I am glad I did.

  3. Gayle Hettinger 2024-05-07

I purchased a pre-owned 2010 DTS with 74k miles on it. While it is true that some components may require maintenance after a decade of use, I have found that this vehicle has experienced a number of oil leaks and persistent error codes that have been difficult to resolve. Additionally, the check engine light has been known to illuminate frequently, even in response to minor bumps in the road. Overall, I have found this car to be less reliable than I had hoped.

  4. Casper Kulas 2024-02-02

I have found that my Town Car is superior to the DTS in almost every way, except for a few areas such as pedal position, ride, brake feel, and power. The DTS engine can be quite noisy and expansion joints can cause booming throughout the structure. On the other hand, the TC's body on frame is much quieter with much less road noise. While the DTS steering is too firm, making small corrections difficult without yanking the wheel, the Town Car's steering is much more comfortable. Additionally, the DTS lacks a locking fuel filler door, a trunk lid pull down, and a trumpet horn, and its occupants sit too low. When compared to the TC, the DTS seems like a mid-sized car. However, the Town Car rides too firmly, and the accelerator and brake pedals are too close together and too far to the right. Furthermore, the engine is not as responsive as the one in the DTS, which is rear-wheel drive.

  5. Wellington Hintz 2024-01-27

I had my brake lights on the trunk replaced twice, and it didn't cost me a penny. However, I did have to replace the water pump at 6500 miles, which cost me $900. Unfortunately, at 74000 miles, I had an oil leak and was told by the dealer that the North Star engine was notorious for this issue, which cost me $3000 to fix. Additionally, my power steering was leaking, and it cost me $1500 to fix. Lastly, the lights on my dashboard flicker all the time.

Positive 2011 Cadillac Dts car reviews

  1. Herbert Emmerich 2025-03-22

I test drove the Lincoln MKS, Buick Lacrosse, Lucerne, and the Lexus E350. In my opinion, the DTS had a superior engine, ride, and luxury features that were either on par or superior to the other cars. I understand that everyone will have their own pros and cons, but for me, it was an easy decision. Some people may say that it's a 'Grandpa vehicle', but I don't mind being called old because there is nothing like the ride and luxury of a Caddy.

  2. Lon Zemlak 2025-03-16

I searched for this platinum edition for over 4 years and finally found it! It makes an incredible used car buy given all the stats on reliability and safety. The inlaid wood and Cadillac logos on the upgraded leather seats with alcantara headliner and courtesy lights make it the perfect chauffeuring car for taking friends and family out to dinner or cruising down the highway. You may find the ride a bit rough for such a big luxury car, but once you get it up to speed, it smooths things out. I bought my 4-year-old DTS with 32k miles at about 1/3 the MSRP, which was a bargain! However, I eventually sold the car because I don't keep cars for long, and in this case, the driver's seat was not very comfortable to me. I was able to negotiate with the dealer on trade, and he thought he would be stuck with an old Caddy on his Maserati lot, but I assured him the Platinum would be gone within two weeks. Because I was buying and trading two cars, he did up his price. I checked back a week later, and he said, 'You were right! It didn't make it to the weekend before someone bought it over the phone from out of town and came within a few days to pick it up. I'll look at these platinums differently now.' I still highly recommend the Platinum!

  3. Randi Schaefer 2025-03-14

I've driven many cars before choosing the DTS, and Lincoln was a very close second! However, I ultimately chose the DTS for its ride, comfort, quiet cabin, and spaciousness. It's a big car with plenty of room. When compared to Lexus, Audi, Infinity, or BMW, you'll end up spending more money. Additionally, you have to use premium fuel at .50 plus more per gallon, and the performance is not as smooth as the Northstar V8! On regular fuel, I get 18MPG around town and have gotten 25 MPG on a trip, running 70MPH with our luggage and presents for the grandkids! Professional reviews tend to focus on the status symbol of a nameplate, but I looked at pure car comparison, not an image of how I arrive. After all, isn't that what driving a car is all about? Sure, the car floats, but that's luxury. What do people do? Buy a luxury car with real tight handling and take it to the track? Get serious. I own a Z06 Corvette for that. And I'll tell you, the Caddy is no slouch! It's not as tight as European cars, but I bought a luxury car. The massaging seats are superb on a long drive, and the Bose stereo sounds great. When I look at the dash, it's straightforward and easy to use. Some of the other cars I looked at, including Lexus, Toyota Avalon, and the above, had so many confusing controls that were not ergonomically designed, it made you wonder. I'm driving the car, not operating an airliner. Infinity, BMW, and Audi had the worst set of dash controls. Now, to the car. If anything breaks, it's half the cost of other parts. The same base components are made in high quantities as they are on the GM cars and less than competitors. The dealer has been great. The car has only needed normal wearable maintenance items. No big scheduled service appointment for required maintenance that cost $1800 like some of the others. I've taken good care of the car, and the fit and finish are perfect. Nothing has come loose or ever let me down! Does it look dated? No, it has a classic look. And when driving it, the seats feel like your favorite recliner at home. They're not tight or hugging, which is perfect for a comfortable ride. The engine is smooth and steady, always providing power when you need it, and it's incredibly quiet! The navigation system may be a bit outdated, but that's just the nature of technology. I've owned many luxury brands, including Benz and others mentioned above, but the Caddy is definitely a keeper!

  4. Lane Johnson 2025-03-10

Hello there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on the Avalon and the DTS. After test driving both vehicles multiple times, I found that the Avalon rides like a smaller and lighter car compared to the DTS. Additionally, the trunk is significantly smaller on the Avalon and it just doesn't have the same ride quality as the DTS. In my opinion, the overall appearance of the Avalon is that of a much cheaper vehicle. I was surprised to see the expert review comparing these two vehicles as peers. While the Avalon is a good car, the DTS is significantly more luxurious in nearly all respects. I don't believe that not having a six-speed transmission lessens the vehicle in any way. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts!

  5. Modesto Boyer 2025-02-14

I've been driving the DTS for 3 months now and I must say that I really enjoy it. The ride is spectacular and the interior build quality is good. However, I have noticed a few issues with the build quality. The inside window molding is loose and there is a gap where you can see the edge of the window. Additionally, the trim on the doors does not line up and the doors themselves do not align properly. I also had an issue with the transmission leaking at 1000 miles, but thankfully the bolts were sealed. Although GM is discontinuing the DTS, I still believe that Cadillac is a great brand. However, I may have to consider other options in the future.
