The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).

The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.

Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.

The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common 2001 Volkswagen Golf problems

The Volkswagen Golf 2001 has been reported to have several common problems that affect its performance and reliability.

One of the most common problems is engine misfiring, which occurs when the car starts to misfire occasionally. This problem is caused by a problem with the ignition coil packs, which tend to break in clusters. The ignition coil packs are easy to find on parts lists and are relatively easy to replace, making this a problem that can be fixed without significant expense or difficulty.

Another common problem is a rattling sound that can be heard when starting the engine, which disappears after driving for a few miles and then reappears at random intervals. This problem is caused by a notorious issue with the camshaft-driven high-pressure fuel pump. It is recommended to replace the fuel pump every 20k miles, even if the rattling sound cannot be heard, to prevent this problem from occurring.

The Golf 2001 is also prone to going into limp mode while driving, which is often caused by a faulty water pump. This problem can be diagnosed by an initial diagnosis that indicates a faulty supercharger, but it is actually caused by a connection between the water pump and the supercharger. A replacement water pump can be easily found and installed to fix this problem.

Automatic gear changes can also be rough, which is caused by a common issue with the gearbox unit. In most cases, the gearbox unit needs to be replaced completely, although it is recommended to check the timing chain first to ensure that it has not snapped.

Other common problems with the Golf 2001 include rear boot locking problems, hot ABS units, grinding from the rear, faulty seat belts, and struggle to get fifth gear. These problems are caused by a variety of issues, including cracked brake servo pipes, electrical faults in the ABS control unit, faulty rear axles, excessive heat from seat belt pre-tensioners, and low gearbox oil levels or faulty gear linkage or gear cables.

In conclusion, while the Volkswagen Golf 2001 is a popular and reliable car, it is prone to several common problems that can affect its performance and reliability. These problems can be fixed with relative ease and at a reasonable cost, but it is important for owners to be aware of these issues and to take steps to address them promptly to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of their vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-06-02
  • VIN: 9BWPG21J414
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
  • Summary: HELLO, I NOTICED A RECALL DONE ON THESE VW VEHICLES. (HTTP://HDHTEX.COM/INDEX.PHP/VOLKSWAGEN-BRAKE-LIGHT-AND-TURN-SIGNAL-RECALLS-AFFECT-MORE-THAN-1000000-VEHICLES/) THE RECALL IS DUE TO THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND BLINKER LIGHTS NOT WORKING TOGETHER. IF I AM SIGNALING LEFT AND I PUT MY BRAKES ON, THE SIGNAL SWITCHES SIDES AND THE LIGHTS START BLINKING. THIS HAPPENS WITH BOTH DIRECTIONS. THIS IS A HUGE SAFTEY ISSUE AND ITS NOT DUE TO ANY AFTERMARKET TINKERING. I CALLED VOLKSWAGON TO HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM AND THEY DECLINED ANY ASSISTANCE TO ME. IT MAKES SENSE FOR THEM TO FIX THIS IF IT WAS A RECALL AT ONE POINT. THANK YOU

MY CAR, LIKE LOTS OF OLDER VEHICLES, SUFFERS FROM UV CLOUDING OF THE HEADLIGHT LENSES, WHICH DIMINISHES THEIR EFFECTIVENESS IN ILLUMINATING THE ROADWAY AT NIGHT. SURELY THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN. EQUALLY SURELY, THE MANUFACTURERS ARE AWARE OF IT. SO WHY IS THIS DEFICIENCY OF DESIGN OR MANUFACTURE NOT THE SUBJECT OF RECALLS? *TT

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-04-25
  • VIN: WVWPT61J614
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: 2. DRIVER'S SEAT LOCK MECHANISM (FORWARD & AFT MOTION) FAILED TO ENGAGE 1. DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO MOVE THE SEAT FORWARD TO USE THE CAR FOR AN ERRAND, AND THE SEAT WOULD NOT LOCK IN PLACE. ANY PRESSURE ON BRAKE PEDAL RESULTED IN THE SEAT MOVING BACK, PUTTING THE FOOT CONTROLS OUT OF REACH. DRIVER IS 5' 3" TALL. 3. LOCAL DEALER LOOKED AT THE CAR, DETERMINED THAT "DUST AND DEBRIS" JAMMED THE UNDER-SEAT MECHANISM. TECH CLEANED AND LUBED THE PISTON MECHANISM, RESULTING IN A TEMPORARY FIX. "IF IT EVER FAILS AGAIN," THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID, "WE MIGHT HAVE TO REPLACE THE PART." IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE FAILED AT ALL! THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE 100% FAIL-SAFE. THE DEALER/MANUFACTURER SHOULD REPLACE SUCH DEFECTIVE UNITS FOR FREE. INSTEAD, THE DEALER SAID THE PART IS OUT OF WARRANTY, AND THUS CHARGED $90+TAX TO REPAIR A SAFETY DEFECT. OUTRAGEOUS! THE PROBLEM REALLY STEMMED FROM THE ORIGINAL LUBRICANT GELLING IN THE "PISTON IN BARREL" MECHANISM, PREVENTING THE PISTON FROM ENGAGING THE CENTRAL SEAT LOCK RAIL. THE CONSUMER HAS NO EASY WAY TO UN-JAM THE COMPLEX MECHANISM. IF THIS HAD JAMMED WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION, ON A HIGHWAY, THE DRIVER WOULD HAVE LOST CONTROL AND LIKELY BEEN INJURED OR KILLED. LUCKILY NOT IN THIS CASE. THE DESIGN IS DEFECTIVE WHEN IT RESULTS IN EVEN ONE FAILURE. NO OTHER MANUFACTURER USES SUCH A COMPLEX, VULNERABLE SEAT LOCK MECHANISM THAT IS PRONE TO FAILURE. THEY ALL USE A SIMPLE SYSTEM OF LEVERS, METAL RODS AND SPRINGS TO ACCOMPLISH A RELIABLE SEAT LOCK. PLEASE ASK VW TO RECALL CARS WITH SUCH PISTON IN SLEEVE SYSTEMS TO INSURE 100% RELIABILITY...BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. *TR

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-12-20
  • VIN: 9BWGT61J214
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2001 VW GOLF GLS. ONE DAY MY CAR'S TRUCK DOOR CAN NOT BE LOCKED, I TOOK IT TO VW DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION. INITIALLY I THOUGH IT WAS JUST SOME WIRING PROBLEM, BUT AFTER THE CERTIFIED VW TECHNICIAN CHECKED EVERY POSSIBLE THINGS THAT CAUSED THE TRUCK LOCK MALFUNCTION, IT WAS SO CALLED "COMFORT CONTROL MODULE" NOT SENDING SIGNAL AND ELECTRICITY TO THE TRUCK LOCK. NO BIG DEAL, IT'S JUST A TRUCK LOCK, NO NEED TO WORRY, SO I REFUSED THE $900 ESTIMATED REPAIR AMOUNT FOR A NEW COMFORT CONTROL MODULE (CCM) REPLACEMENT. THE VW TECHNICIAN FURTHER EXPLAINED THAT IT WAS OK NOT TO REPLACE IT IF IT IS JUST THE TRUCK LOCK MALFUNCTION, BUT IF ANYTHING THAT IS ACTING FUNNY SUCH AS WINDSHIELD WIPERS NOT MOVING, DOORS LOCK BY ITSELF, POWER WINDOWS CAN NOT ROLL DOWN, OR DASHBOARD LIGHT GOING ON AND OFF BY ITSELF, THEN IT IS IMPORTANT TO REPLACE IT. NO MAJOR PROBLEM FOR A YEAR, THEN SUDDENLY DRIVING IN THE RAIN AT NIGHT, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS MALFUNCTION, THEY WILL NOT MOVE AT ALL. I CAN BARELY SEE WHAT WAS IN FRONT OF ME IN HIGH SPEED ON FREEWAY IN THE RAIN. I TRIED TO OPEN THE WINDOWS SO I CAN SEE BETTER SO THAT I CAN PULL OVER SAFELY. I TRIED TO LOWER THE WINDOWS , BUT THE WINDOWS DIDN'T COME DOWN. I SLOWED DOWN AND PULLED OVER BY GUESSING, LUCKILY NO CAR WAS BEHIND ME OR NEXT TO ME. I GOT OUT AND CHECKED IF THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG OR WHAT OBSTRUCTING THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. I FOUND NOTHING, IT JUST SIMPLY STOP WORKING ALONG WITH MY POWER WINDOWS. I WENT TO THE DEALER AFTER THE RAIN AND AGAIN THEY WERE CAUSED BY THE MALFUNCTION CCM. SINCE IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE A CAR WITHOUT A PAIR OF FUNCTIONAL WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND WINDOWS, I WAS RECOMMENDED TO HAVE THE CCM REPLACED. I WENT ONLINE AND FOUND THAT MANY VW OWNERS HAVE SOME SIMILAR CCM COMPLAINTS AND CONCERNS AND I PERSONALLY THINK THAT THE CCM IS A BIG SAFETY CONCERN, THIS IS WHY I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT TO SEE IF IT CAN MINIMIZE THE DANGER AND SAFETY. THANK YOU FOR READING. *TR

  • Summary: MY 2001 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF WAS MANUFACTURED ON 12/2000. THE FUEL PUMP SUPPLY LINE NIPPLE CRACKED AND HAD BEEN LEAKING GAS UNDER THE REAR SEAT. IT WAS TAKEN TO CAMELBACK VOLKSWAGEN IN PHOENIX ARIZONA WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED AS A NEW. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ACKNOWLEDGED THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THAT THEY REPLACE A LOT OF THE FUEL PUMPS DUE TO NIPPLE CRACKS BUT VOLKSWAGEN DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THIS AS A RECALL OR SAFETY ISSUE DESPITE A RECALL NOTICE FOR GOLFS MANUFACTURED THE SAME YEAR WITH THE SAME SAFETY ISSUE AS MY VEHICLE. THE FUEL LINE TENSION CAUSED THE NIPPLE TO CRACK OFF. VOLKSWAGEN REFUSED TO REPAIR THIS AS A DEFECT. THE OLD PART IS AVAILABLE. *TR

I encountered my first problem at 24,300 miles, just over the 24,000 mile warranty. Despite having to pay $650, I was confident that the issue was resolved. However, I faced another setback and had to spend $1300 on repairs when my car had only 35,000 miles. In addition, I had to replace the sunroof motor and passenger side window a few months after purchasing the car, which had only 7000 miles on it at the time. Nevertheless, I am excited to pick up my 2000 Toyota Camry XLE tomorrow.

If you're looking for a reliable car, I would not recommend the VW Golf based on my personal experience. Despite their historically good track record, the Golf I purchased from a dealership had several issues, including a missing 'block heater' required for cold winters, multiple radio replacements, windshield wiper hose difficulties, a malfunctioning airbag indicator light, and more. Unfortunately, the dealership I dealt with was also difficult to work with. It's important to thoroughly research and consider all options before making a car purchase.

  3. Gerhard Thompson 2024-06-06

My Golf is a fun car, but unfortunately, maintenance has been a big problem. I have spent over $4,000.00 dollars on warranty work so far! However, I am lucky that VW has covered all the expenses, even after the warranty has expired. If you plan on getting this car, be prepared to spend a lot of time at the dealer getting things fixed. Despite the maintenance issues, I still think it's a fun car!

  4. Armani Shanahan 2024-04-25

The car is undoubtedly enjoyable to drive and boasts excellent fuel economy. However, the recurring issue with the mass air flow sensor has been a significant inconvenience, causing a drastic loss of power and potential safety concerns. Despite the $350.00 cost to repair, I have decided to part ways with the car due to this flaw.

Positive 2001 Volkswagen Golf car reviews

  1. Austen Murazik 2024-11-13

Great car! I love the stealthy sleeper look combined with unheralded performance. The interior is fantastic, with great ergonomics. This is one of the reasons why I like German cars so much. And who could argue with a turbo? :)

  2. Garnet Price 2024-11-11

Compared to other compact cars such as the Civic, Focus, and Corolla, the Golf is a lot more enjoyable to drive, albeit at a premium price. I am 6'2

  3. Kian Rogahn 2024-11-09

We checked out Civics, Corollas, and Proteges, but then we stumbled upon a car that was truly worth driving. The Golf GLS didn't feel like an economy car at all. Its interior is far superior, the options are plentiful, and the looks are stylish. The ride is great, the handling is agile, and the inside mimics a Passat. For about $14,400, we were able to get a moonroof, premium stereo, ABS, alloy wheels, heated seats, and a 2-year/24,000-mile warranty at a low interest rate of 4.9%.

  4. Bill Wilkinson 2024-11-08

My wife loves the VW Golf, which is great because I only kind of like it. It's the perfect size for her and she really enjoys driving it, but I do wish we had gone for the turbo. Some aspects, such as the door handles and cup holders, seem a bit weak and fragile. However, the steering and brakes are solid and reliable, which is what really matters.

  5. Wilmer Osinski 2024-11-08

I have experienced several issues with my car, including problems with the airbag indicator, car alarm, oxygen sensor, rear windshield washer, and windows. These issues have occurred within 30,000 miles of driving. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing a VW.
