The Buick Rendezvous is a mid-size crossover SUV that was sold by Buick for the 2002–2007 model years. Introduced in the spring of 2001, the Buick Rendezvous and its corporate cousin, the Pontiac Aztek, were GM's first entries into the crossover SUV segment. The Rendezvous featured a four-speed automatic transmission with a V6 engine and optional all-wheel-drive (Versatrak). The SUV used the same platform as GM's short-wheelbase minivans, the Chevrolet Venture and Pontiac Montana. The Rendezvous provided a passenger- and load-carrying capacity not seen in the Buick lineup since the discontinuation of the Buick Roadmaster Estate station wagon in 1996.

Technology and notable features

It was Buick's first truck in its lineup since 1923, and the Rendezvous was billed as a combination of the best attributes of a minivan (large cargo capacity, seating for up to seven), a luxury automobile (ride, handling, smoothness) and a sport utility vehicle (truck styling and available all wheel drive).

The Rendezvous was produced at General Motors' Ramos Arizpe, Mexico assembly plant, where it shared an assembly line with the Pontiac Aztek. Like the Pontiac Aztek, the Buick Rendezvous is based on a shortened version of GM's second generation U platform minivans. In lieu of four-wheel drive, the Rendezvous offered Versatrak, a full-time, fully automatic all-wheel drive system which provided sure-footed traction in inclement weather and could handle moderate off-road surfaces.

Buick benchmarked their Park Avenue sedan as the prototypical target for ride and handling for the Rendezvous. In order to provide a luxurious and responsive car-like ride, all Rendezvous came equipped with a fully independent rear suspension system regardless of optional content or trim level.

The Rendezvous' instrument cluster detailing featured teal illuminated needles and numbers set in a silver face accented by chrome trim rings that was meant to evoke the luxurious look and feel of an expensive watch or designer bracelet. On the uplevel CXL model, a driver information center on the instrument panel provided the outside temperature, compass functions, a trip computer that included readings of fuel economy, range and fuel used. An optional second generation heads-up display was also available. This was also available in the CX model. An optional tire inflation monitoring system provided readings of tire pressure and warned if out of the specified range.

The Rendezvous boasted the ability to carry seven passengers when equipped with a third-row bench, a class-leading feature that Buick brought to market before its competitors, and was able to carry within its interior a standard 4 x 8' sheet of plywood.

In support of the Rendezvous' intended role as a versatile accoutrement for busy people with families, it provided a center console with storage space and power points for a laptop computer as well as a separate spots to hold a purse, a cell phone, pager or other small items that the owner would want to keep organized and readily accessible as well as an optional rear cargo organizer system and rear seat stereo system controls with headsets.

  • Summary: Fuel line heat shield rusted and is leaking gas. I noticed gas outside before getting into car few days before gas leak was noticeable. I could not tell if it was my car or not as it was always in a parking lot that I noticed smelling gas. Yesterday, I noticed I had to pump the gas a couple times in order to start car. Went to the grocery store, and when leaving store, gas oder was strong. Once I was on my way home, 5 miles from store. Gas smell was strong inside cabin, and once home gas continued to leak for another 5-10 minutes after turning car off. I inspected the the leak this morning, and could see the heat shield on fuel line was rusted through along the underside of fuel line u joint. I am waiting for my car to be inspected by Fire Departmnet so that I can have to towed (Nebraska requirement to towe car with gas leaking issue) to repair shop.

  • Summary: I AM THE OWNER OF A 2006 BUICK RENDEZVOUS WITH 133,000+ MILES. I AM WRITING TO DOCUMENT A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT HAS OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF A MANUFACTURER DEFECT ON MY VEHICLE. ON OCTOBER 17 2016 I FILLED MY TANK AT THE SHELL STATION AT 5842 COLUMBIA PIKE IN VIRGINIA. ONCE THE GAS TANK WAS FILLED, I NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FUEL POURING FROM THE UNDERSIDE, TOP AND DOWN THE SIDE AND REARMOST END OF THE GAS TANK. THE FUEL SPILLAGE CONTINUED FOR APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES BUT NOT BEFORE AT LEAST A HALF GALLON OF FUEL LEAKED FROM THE TANK. WHEN THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED, THE DRIVER TOLD ME THAT HE COULD NOT TRANSPORT THE VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE RISK POSED BY THE FUEL LEAK. I CONTACTED ANOTHER TOW TRUCK WHO TOOK MY VEHICLE TO OURISMAN IN ALEXANDRIA VIRGINIA. CURRENTLY, I AM WITHOUT A VEHICLE AND WILL INCUR SIGNIFICANT EXPENSE AND INCONVENIENCE THROUGH A VEHICLE RENTAL OR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION UNTIL MY VEHICLE IS REPAIRED. SINCE THE INCIDENT, I DISCOVERED THAT THE ISSUE IS PREVALENT ON ALL YEARS OF THE VEHICLE. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS AND NUMEROUS NHTSA CAMPAIGNS WHICH POINT TO FUEL LINE CORROSION, FUEL INLET CHECK VALVE WELD BREAKAGE, AND FUEL TANK RUST AS PROMINENT CAUSES. GM ISSUED A RECALL FOR SPECIFIC VINS PROVIDING REPAIR AT NO COST TO THE OWNER. MY RESEARCH ALSO REVEALED THAT MANY OWNERS WHOSE VEHICLES HAD THE SAME DEFECT BUT WE'RE NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL, WERE EITHER PROVIDED A FULLY COVERED REPAIR, OR REIMBURSED FOR EXPENSES UNDER A SPECIAL SERVICE COVERAGE PROVISION. GIVEN THE SIGNIFICANT RISK OF IGNITION, FIRE AND/OR EXPLOSION THAT THIS DOCUMENTED MANUFACTURER DEFECT HAS CAUSED, AND THE SAFETY RISK THAT THIS VEHICLE NOW POSES TO ME AND MY FAMILY, I AM REQUESTING THAT WHATEVER REPAIR IS REQUIRED TO REMEDY THIS DEFECT BE COVERED IN FULL BY GENERAL MOTORS. LOOKED UP CONSUMER COMPLAINTS AND SEE PAGE AFTER PAGE OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES RIGHT AT 92,000. APPARENTLY THIS IS AN ISSUE. NOW THE DEALER WANTS ANOTHER $5000. TO REPLACE IT. I HAVE A LEMON AND I WANT IT FIXED OR REPLACED. THAT'S $16,000 FOR A $9,000 CAR. REALLY COME ON GM STEP UP YOUR GAME. MY FAMILY DEPENDS ON THIS CAR AND WITHOUT IT WE COULD LOSE EVERYTHING. I HAVE NEW TIRES ON THE VEHICLE. WHEN I GOT OUT TO LOOK, THE WHEEL WAS BENT OUT AND FIRST THING I THOUGHT WAS TIE ROD. TIRE IS FINE. WHEN MY HUSBAND AND UNCLE CAME OUT THEY NOTICED THE BALL JOINT HAD BROKE OFF. THANK GOODNESS I HAD CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT HURT MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE. DON'T KNOW THE EXTENT OF WHAT IS GOING ON YET, BUT I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THE VEHICLE AFTER SEEING SO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SUSPENSION, ETC. IN FACT WHEN I HAVE DRIVEN IT IN SNOW, EVEN WITH THE NEW TIRES, I DIDN'T FEEL LIKE I HAD VERY GOOD CONTROL. I HAVE NEVER FELT THAT WAY WITH OTHER VEHICLES THAT I HAVE OWNED.

  • Summary: I'VE HAD SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. SPENT OVER $4000 IN REPAIRS IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS. THE FIRST PROBLEM I HAD WAS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY THE REDUCED ENGINE POWER LIGHT AND TRACTION SYSTEM LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND THE VEHICLE WOULD JUST DECELERATE AND WOULDN'T GO OVER 15MPH. I HAD IT REPAIRED ONCE AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE WIRING HARNESS AND THEN 2 MONTHS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN HAD IT REPAIRED AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE WIRING HARNESS AND COMPUTER THAT NEEDED REPLACED. AND NOW I'M HAVING A SIMILAR ISSUE BUT THIS TIME THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT IS FLASHING BUT THE CAR DOESN'T WANT TO ACCELERATE AND TAKES SEVERAL SECONDS TO EVEN GET UP TO 35 MPH. I HAD THIS REPAIRED ONCE AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A WIRING/FUSE ISSUE AND THAT THE CAR WAS ONLY RUNNING ON 3 CYLINDERS AND LITERALLY 2 DAYS AFTER THE REPAIR IT STARTED HAPPENING AGAIN. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. MY MECHANIC EVEN TOLD ME I SHOULD JUST GET RID OF THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT OBVIOUSLY HAS MAJOR WIRING ISSUES. IT ONLY HAS 130,000 MILES.

  • Summary: CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY BUILT WITH CLOTH SEATS THAT WERE EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC AIR BAG PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM AND LATER REUPHOLSTERED WITH AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVER KITS ARE INVOLVED. TESTING HAS INDICATED THAT THE AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVERS CAN CAUSE THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM TO MALFUNCTION.
  • Consequence: IF THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS, THE FRONT AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE MAY BE DISABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE ENABLED, OR ENABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE DISABLED. IN EITHER CASE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT REQUIRES AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A FRONT PASSENGER'S LEVEL OF INJURY MAY BE INCREASED.
  • Remedy: BECAUSE A REPLACEMENT LEATHER SEAT COVER THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM IS NOT AVAILABLE, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) WILL REPURCHASE THESE VEHICLES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS STATED IN GM'S LETTER TO OWNERS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2006. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT GM AT 1-877-477-1022 TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF REPURCHASING THEIR VEHICLE.

    I purchased my '06 Rendezvous in early '07 and have unfortunately experienced a multitude of issues. Despite my initial hopes of finding an SUV/crossover with better gas mileage, I have been faced with a series of repair bills. These have included brakes, rotors, oxygen sensors, wheel bearings, anti-lock brakes, and the AWD system. The cost of these repairs has been significant. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend this vehicle.

    I replaced both front hubs at only 52,000 miles and the power steering pump blew at 60,000 miles. The check engine light has come on several times for no reason, causing diagnostic work prior to inspection. Additionally, there are some loose interior parts and the speakers are already blowing. The gas gauge is also very inaccurate, which has caused me to run out of gas. Despite these issues, I am confident in my assessment of the vehicle's condition.

    I just purchased my new 2006 CXL Rendezvous and so far I love this car! We got a great deal on it because it was a former rental with 9340 miles on it. It has everything - leather interior, faux wood grain dash, rear parking assist, power everything, third row seating, satellite radio, OnStar, automatic climate control, etc. This is the most comfortable car I've ever owned and also the nicest. I considered a Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent and Kia Sorrento. After test driving them all I knew the moment I sat down in the car that it was the one for me. As far as longevity goes, we'll see. But, I'm am very happy with my purchase and the dealer I went to.

    This is my second RDW that I have owned and I absolutely love it! The ride is smooth and comfortable, making it perfect for long trips. The radio system is also fantastic. I've driven it in bad weather and it handles it like a champ. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my RDW and I can't wait to lease another one in 3 years!

    Hi there! It's great to hear that you're considering the Rendezvous as your next family vehicle. We went for the fully loaded CXL model and it's been a fantastic choice for us. Even without the XM radio or heads-up display, it has all the benefits of an SUV and a minivan, without any of the drawbacks. One of the things we love about it is the third row seat, which can comfortably hold two adults - I've even sat back there myself! The leather and wood grain interior is definitely worth the extra cost, and we made sure to get all the safety features. While we skipped the AWD, FWD + traction control + ABS has been more than enough for our needs. We previously had a Saturn VUE, but we're so glad we traded it for the Rendezvous.

    The Rendezvous Buick should have had when starting the RDV line. I intentionally sought out to purchase the Rendezvous with the 3.5 engine when I heard about it. Previously, I owned a 2002 CX 3.4 that was slightly underpowered at times when power was needed, but it got good gas mileage. This 3.5 engine provides me with better mileage and lots of power. Unfortunately, to purchase this model, one must buy all the bells and whistles. However, it is a small trade-off for such a wonderful engine. I have owned it for almost a year, and there is nothing wrong with it (unlike my 2002). Up to 2006, the Rendezvous had the biggest cargo room of any midsize SUV/CUV and tied for the top spot in fuel efficiency. It is a shame that they are discontinuing the Rendezvous; otherwise, I would buy another (3rd) one!

    I bought this SUV 3 1/2 years ago and I still love it! It's been a great car overall, except for one small issue. Once the engine is good and warm, if you accelerate too quickly, the dash lights will start blinking and alarms will ding until you get up to speed and let off the accelerator. Then the AWD DISABLE light will stay on until you turn off the car. However, it doesn't seem to actually affect the running of the vehicle and it still gets me where I need to go. In fact, it has made several trips to Kansas from Oklahoma and 3 trips to Tennessee! I am definitely not retiring it and turning it into a teenager vehicle. This is actually the 2nd Buick I have owned and I am definitely not disappointed. All vehicles need repairs when buying used, so you can't expect perfection. I will definitely purchase another Buick!
