2023 Ford Maverick problems
The Ford Maverick is a compact car manufactured and marketed by Ford for model years 1970–1977 in the United States, originally as a two-door sedan employing a rear-wheel drive platform original to the 1960 Falcon — and subsequently as a four-door sedan on the same platform. The Maverick replaced the Falcon in most of the world, but Australia kept selling and developing the Falcon.
The Maverick was also manufactured in Venezuela, Canada, Mexico, and from 1973 to 1979, in Brazil.
The name "maverick" was derived from the word for unbranded range animals, and the car's nameplate was stylized to resemble the head of Longhorn cattle.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-18
- VIN: 3FTTW8F9XPR
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: This vehicle will reduce or cut throttle application/response relative to how many degrees the steering wheel is turning. When trying to pull out in traffic if you have the wheel turned beyond a set angle the throttle doesn't respond as expected and acceleration is greatly reduced. It will also cut the throttle if you pull out and then turn only to fully accelerate as the wheel is straightened out again. Two very dangerous examples I've experienced are 1: pulling onto a "freeway" that has a few side roads with perpendicular access. With the wheel turned the truck is very slow to accelerate when first pulling onto the expressway but suddenly will as the wheel is straightened. 2: When going across 2 lanes of traffic and making a turn to join traffic the truck will accelerate as expected across the first lanes, loose power as you turn, and then accelerate fully again as the wheel is straightened. While an argument could be made to just sit and wait until there is more time to join traffic, there are moments when being able to accelerate hard are necessary. This vehicle will either not accelerate or will reduce acceleration based on angles of steering. I believe this is a dangerous situation that most experienced drivers are not going to be expecting when they have to join fast moving traffic. Following web forums this is an issue other owners have experienced.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
- VIN: 3FTTW8G98PR
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The plastic cooling system overflow expansion tank sign is stress cracking in the inlet tubing at approximately 8K miles. It has gotten worse with my odometer at 12K now. I have not contacted Ford regarding a warranty replacement because they would just replace it with the same defective part. I have further investigated this issue and found several documented cases with complete failure of the tank at a little as 20 K miles.
BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- VIN: 3FTTW8G9XPR
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Ford Maverick. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V684000 (Back Over Prevention); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
- VIN: 3FTTW8E32PR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Vehicle was travelling on freeway at freeway speeds suddenly without notable cause the vehicle electrical stopped, giving multiple warning in succession, cutting speed rapidly to 35 mph, with no acceleration pedal response and an automatic speed of 35 on battery power with the ability to break, but with no control of speed and only regulated by break pedal. Pulled vehicle to side of road and put in park, parking break automatically engaged. Vehicle had alarms on all automatic systems being off. Turning vehicle on and off did not effect response. After checking engine visually, was able to turn vehicle on with no alarms or issues. This has happened in both my Mavericks and almost led to a fatal collision in the 2022 Maverick.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 3FTTW8F99PR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I started the Car and it made loud boom boom sounds like as if I was at a loud concert for about 10 seconds. That stopped but then loud static or electrical sound continued even after car was turned off. Re started and the sound continued. The initial sound shook me and wife. Where wife refuses to get back in. Also the initial sound wife said she smelt smoke. I faintly smelled a burnt wire smell. The next day while driving the system made more of the static/ electrical noise and didn’t stop until I parked and shut off system for about 10 min. I will be taking truck into dealer ship tomorrow.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
- VIN: 3FTTW8E33PR
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The vehicle shakes during acceleration, specifically in the 40mph-65mph range. The shaking is worst around 55-60mph, especially—but not exclusively—when accelerating from a stop. The shaking does not occur at these speeds while coasting; acceleration prompts the issue. This is a known problem among 2022 Maverick owners, according to online forums including Maverick Truck Club, Reddit, and influencers on YouTube. Drivers widely report that the CV Axle is the culprit here, and report that replacing the CV Axle alleviates the shaking.

There was no warning light illuminated. The failure recurred the next day while driving 70-75 MPH, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
- VIN: 3FTTW8G94PR
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2023 Ford Maverick 2.0L engine current mileage 5300 Noticed oil leak on top of engine valve cover. Ford Mechanic stated there are (3) current service related engine leak issues with Maverick. (1) Plastic valve cover cracked (2) Turbo Oil leak (3) Timing Cover Leak. Mechanic stated a die test will need to be performed. After review of online forums, this appears to be a more common issue and can cause engine fire, especially since High Pressure fuel pump is also located on top of the engine. With Ford spreading repairs across three known issues, A recall investigation should be opened. Repair Sevice schedule for 9/19/24. Can provide repair invoices if desired after service. From research the valve cover, most likely culprit based on oil leak location, is a 2 week repair.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- VIN: 3FTTW8F94PR
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Shortly after startup the infotainment screen on my Maverick froze. After shifting into reverse it was unable to display the reverse camera image. I attempted several shifts between Drive, Park, and Reverse and it remained frozen. I attempted a short key cycle, powering the truck down, including opening the drivers door in an attempt to cycle power to the infotainment and upon restart it remained frozen. After arriving at my destination and leaving the power off for 10-15 minutes it returned to normal behavior on the next key cycle. I have video of the failure occurring, including attempted solutions noted above.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
- VIN: 3FTTW8E34PR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I have just recently bought a brand new truck, a hybrid model. Not a single mile on it when I purchased it, and I strongly feel that I almost died or caused an accident, completely not my fault but the truck’s fault. This has happened on 3 separate occasions. The first two times, as I was driving up the highway on a mountain road, I lost power, but just kind of chalked it up to maybe the fuel sloshing around, and no other vehicles were around me. The third time, I was returning home from work, on a busy 4-lane highway that goes across the pass and over the mountains, I was in the left lane, a semi truck was to my right, and a semi truck was behind me, we were passing the slower truck that was on the right, and I was traveling at around 55 mph, the truck completely shut off and was flashing red at me to pull to the side of the road. I lost all power, the steering, gas, and everything was not working. I need to mention that I was in front of semi truck, a larger truck that cannot stop on a dime, so he had to swerve to miss me, as I did not have control of the truck. The slower truck went by me and there was a another pickup truck behind him, and there was a little bit of a gap between them, so I jerked the wheel over and drove into the ditch. It was absolutely frightening, and kind of switched something in my head that I was very close to causing a large crash and maybe a death, of myself or someone else. I was in the ditch and the truck would not start back up. Nothing worked. To add to that, I was in a spot of the mountains that I do not get cell phone service. So I popped the hood and just sat there trying to turn the ignition and start the vehicle. 30 minutes passed and I slammed the hood and got back inside the truck and this time the truck turned over, but it said it was running on electric only, and the check engine light was, so I was able to limp home which was about 30 miles away, driving 20-30 mph. It sent the codes to my phone and I contacted the dealer.
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
- VIN: 3FTTW8E39PR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Note: Nobody was hurt, I am pre-emptively reporting this as I see it as a potentially dangerous issue. Transmission can jump/nudge the car a bit, especially in cold starts and if the engine is under load (e.g. AC or Heat). I've seen it online in Reddit reported, but mine seems to be a fairly strong version of it. It occurs pretty much every time the engine is cold. As I learned in a trip, if you don't press the brake hard enough, it can move. We did a road trip. I was stopped at a light (fully stopped). Brakes were pressed hard enough to not move, but not 'to the floor'. The vehicle jumped and moved about a foot into the crosswalk when I was stopped properly before then. Freaked me out. Nobody was in the crosswalk, so thankfully nobody was hurt. But this could be very dangerous behavior in a city where there are a lot a people. A surprising lurch when you think it's stopped isn't safe, and is going to create a liability for me. Me living near a big city, it's a worry. I've already brought it to a dealer about this, they said 'it's normal for mavericks' after investigating it for 25 days. I will re-raise this with them, but am not expecting much. I ran the truck with a diagnostic tool I own, no codes thrown through the bus, no warning lights during the event either. POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
- VIN: 3FTTW8E35PR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Saturday [XXX] I was driving on the [XXX] in SW PA and as I attempted to accelerate there was no power. I looked down at my transmission dial and it was set in neutral. I rolled the dial back to drive and pushed the gas and was able to accelerate. This is the 5th TIME this has happened in this vehicle 3 while driving on the Interstate, 2 while accelerating after a stop. Apparently there is a fix for this, recall 23V330/24S33 . I have been working with a local ford dealer to rectify the situation but it has not been resolved. I guess they updated most of the modules in my truck hoping to unlock a TCM update to preform the correct recall but it didn't work so they can not do the correct update to fix this problem. I also filed a complaint with you for same issue in May 2024 and received an email from Jason Winick. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
- VIN: 3FTTW8E31PR
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Under 19k Ford replace my axle underwarranty. now 22000 miles the axle is broken again.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
- VIN: 3FTTW8E39PR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: There are/were no warning lights or errors that popped up. When I am coming to a stop (last couple seconds of slowing) I will often feel like there is suddenly no brakes, then a harsh braking suddenly. There has not been an incident where this has resulted in an accident, but it makes me feel like I don't have control of the vehicle if I can't anticipate braking behavior on perfectly dry, smooth surfaces. This would be compounded if there were wet or otherwise slippery/rough conditions.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27
- VIN: 3FTTW8E3XPR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: On 7/27/24 I was driving my 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid with approximately 17,500 miles on the New York State Thruway @ approximately 70 mph. All of a sudden without warning the vehicle lost propulsion power. All types of warning lights appeared on the dashboard and the vehicle slowed down to 35mph. I could not control the acceleration or speed of the vehicle with the gas pedal. The vehicle stayed at 35 mph unless I applied the brakes. I was able to exit the interstate several miles down the road and have the vehicle towed to the nearest Ford dealer. This vehicle malfunction caused an extremely dangerous situation as I was almost rear ended several times by vehicles approaching from the rear that were not aware of my lack of ability to keep up with the flow of traffic. Ford repaired the vehicle 3 days later. When I was at the dealer picking up the car I was informed this is a very common problem with the Hybrid model. This needs to be corrected before someone is killed because of this common malfunction.
POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-03
- VIN: 3FTTW8E35PR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Currently at mileage 11,200; was driving about 40 mph at 11:30 am in Folsom, CA; all of a sudden the truck slowed dramatically and I got several error messages: Power-train malfunction/Reduced power, engine service soon, and pre collision assistance not available." Was able to pull off the road safely, although several vehicles were right behind me. Had several recall repais within the last 3 months which involved software updates.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27
- VIN: 3FTTW8E3XPR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Rear Passenger Window failed to come back up after being opened. Diagnosed as Master Window Control. Seen several complains on Maverick Truck Forum similar to mine.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-20
- VIN: 3FTTW8E35PR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: Main infotainment screen keeps freezing, and can't reset or power off. Back up camera does not work during this time, creating a dangerous situation while I am doing constant pickup and drop offs.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-18
- VIN: 3FTTW8E38PR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: There's a repeated issue for the backup camera. This happens around every other time I put the car in reverse, but for a few seconds only though. The backup camera often lags when reversing. This is a safety hazard when backing up if it's not real-time.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-21
- VIN: 3FTTW8E38PR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Driving at approximately 65 miles per hour. Vehicle suddenly went into neutral I was forced to pull over on a busy highway. The dashboard was illuminated with several warning lights and messages. After one key cycle, I was only able to drive in a limited limp mode. After a second key cycle and waiting a few minutes, I was able to drive like normal but an engine light stayed illuminated.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-25
- VIN: 3FTTW8E31PR
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: May 25, 2024 I was driving north on a 2 lane road at about 50 mph. No other vehicles around. Passed a pedestrian walking SB on the opposite shoulder and shortly thereafter my collision assist startled me when it activated fully locking my seat belt and applying the brakes. Only "obstacle" was a very large dark shadow cast over the roadway by a stand of trees. June 9, 2024 Driving EB on a two lane highway, about 55 mph, approaching an intersection with a vehicle stopped at a red light on the south side of the intersection. Pre-collision assist activated again, slamming on the brakes, throwing me and my passenger forcefully forward into our locked seat belts. Scared us both, as there were no obstacles in our path. Thankfully no one was behind us, so we avoided a rear end collision. I have since deactivated the automatic emergency braking, because I no longer trust it will operate correctly and I don't want to be rear ended and/or sustain whiplash or other injuries because of erroneous activation of a "safety" system.
POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
- VIN: 3FTTW8E33PR
- Components: POWER TRAIN,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Upon starting vehicle and entering drive vehicle instrement cluster warnings went off and car applied emergancy brakes and suddenly stopped. upon vehicle restart driver was able to releace brakes and manually start ICE componant of hybrid drive train. vehicle entered drive mode and accelerated without touching gas pedal. brakes were jerky but responsive and vehicle accelerated by itself up to 35 mph while on way to dealer service. vehicle servace alerts given at time of drop off were: pre-collision malfunction Powertrain malfunction engine system fault
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-06
- VIN: 3FTTW8E36PR
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I have a 2023 For Maverick hybrid pickup. While driving on the highway at about 70-75 miles an hour, the engine abruptly shut off. I had to carefully make my way to the shoulder while cars zipped by. Scary and very unsafe. My wife was hysterical and does not want to ride in the truck anymore. Once stopped at shoulder, I turned the ignition to the off and on positions several times. The gas engine would not crank. Three or four messages scrolled on the screen: "Service engine immediately," "Pre-collision assist not available," and others I don't exactly remember. When I would turn the ignition to on, the electric engine would start but when I accelerated in Park, the gas engine did not accelerate, not did it work in Reverse, Neutral or Drive. I was able to limp off the highway about 30 miles and hour under what I presume was electric battery power with my hazard flashers on and park at a gas station. I had to have the truck towed to the dealer on a Saturday night at a cost of $400.00 and leave it for repairs. The Service Department told me the truck was not giving any error codes and they were trying to get further guidance from Ford. They required extensive driving and time to input and test Ford updates. The final result was that they were not able to verify any issues after performing additional PCM updates. I was advised they are all done and will deliver the truck tomorrow Wednesday. However, they still don't know what caused the power failure. I have seen numerous similar incidents being posted about on the Internet.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-29
- VIN: 3FTTW8E35PR
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Having issues with my Back up Camera. Many times I can back almost all the way out of a spot before the camera comes on. Saturday night my screen froze while driving with maps on the screen, and the reverse camera did not work at all for 6 hours of driving until I let the truck sit until morning. Shutting it off for 10 minutes did not reset the system. The Backup camera was completely disabled. Other times there is a 5-10 second delay in it turning on. I am often times done backing up before the screen on the dash shows the camera view.

I am so glad about my purchase!

Hey there! I noticed that the price might be a bit high. Is there any chance we could discuss it further?

The XLT version was a good choice, but unfortunately, the Black Appearance package removed the heated seats and mirrors. That's a bummer.
-
The vehicle is great and the ability to view selections is excellent. The pricing is fair, but it's worth noting that the Maverick may have a markup when you go in.

It's great to hear that you're getting better gas mileage than expected from such a basic car! With about 540-590 miles per tank from a 13 gallon tank, that's truly amazing. And to top it off, the price you paid was incredibly fair!

Hi there! I noticed that my 2023 AWD Maverick has some issues. Specifically, I'm experiencing some vibration at 1500 rpm's and below. Additionally, I've noticed that there's a large gap between the metal and light on the driver's side tail light, and the plastic on the rear wheel walls is hanging and appears to be defective. I took my vehicle to the dealership, but unfortunately they were unable to feel the vibration and said that the other issues are not their problem. I'm hoping we can work together to find a solution to these issues. Thank you!

When people use the term 'cheap truck', they are spot on. The truck is made of plastic and other cheap materials, which makes it uncomfortable to drive. It is also much harder to drive than a full-size truck, and tends to pull during acceleration and wander at highway speeds. Unfortunately, after only a month and a half, there are already multiple rattles inside the cab. The back seat is too small to fit more than a couple of grocery bags, which can be frustrating. Additionally, if you let it sit and idle for a while, it begins to smell of burning wires inside. While it does get great gas mileage, I have to take two trips to move my tools from job site to job site, which nullifies the fuel savings and wastes my time. The brakes catch system jerks to a stop unexpectedly from time to time. Overall, I would give it one star. Other than the great gas mileage, it is the worst 'truck' I've ever owned.

I test drove a 2023 Ford Maverick XLT today with a gas engine. I found it to be a bit jerky and loud on the freeway. The seat was also uncomfortable, which was disappointing. Overall, I didn't find it to be worth the investment. However, everyone has different preferences, so it's worth trying it out for yourself!
