2016 Buick Regal problems
The Buick Regal is a line of mid-size cars marketed by Buick since 1973. For nearly its entire production, the Regal has served as the premium mid-size/intermediate offering of the Buick product range. Introduced as a submodel of the Buick Century, the model line is currently in its sixth generation. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Regal served as the Buick counterpart of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.
Originally introduced as a personal luxury coupe, the Regal was later expanded to a full model line. To showcase its success in NASCAR racing, from 1982 to 1987, Buick introduced the Buick Regal Grand National, Regal T-Type, and the limited-production Buick GNX. During the 1990s, while the four-door sedan superseded the two-door coupe entirely, forced-induction engines made their return, with superchargers replacing turbochargers.
For 1999, the Buick Regal inaugurated the sale of GM vehicles in the Chinese market, with the 1997 design lasting through 2008. Following the 2004 model year, Buick retired the nameplate in North America, with the Regal replaced by the Buick LaCrosse.
For 2008, Opel introduced the Opel Insignia as its largest sedan, with Buick rebranding the model line as the Regal for the Chinese market. For 2011, GM reintroduced the Regal to North America, rebranding the Insignia sedan for North America. For 2018, Buick introduced the second-generation Opel Insignia, sourcing all production from Germany; alongside a first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon in 22 years.
After 2020, as the division shifted away from car model lines, Buick ended sales of the Regal in North America.

Common 2016 Buick Regal problems
The Buick Regal, a sedan-only line since 1997, is known for its upscale features and powerful engine options. However, like any vehicle, it has its fair share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2016 Buick Regal, based on owner complaints:
- Ignition Key Stuck: Some owners have reported issues with the ignition key getting stuck, which can be caused by a failed shifter. This problem can be particularly frustrating, as it may prevent drivers from starting their vehicle.
- Stalling: Stalling can be caused by mass air flow or crankshaft position sensor failure. This issue can be dangerous, especially if it occurs while driving, as it can lead to a sudden loss of power and control over the vehicle.
- Power Window Switches: Power window switches can fail, making it difficult or impossible to operate the windows. This problem can be inconvenient and may require replacement of the switch or the entire window regulator assembly.
- Power Train Problems: Some owners have reported constant problems with the power train, which can include issues with the engine, transmission, or drivetrain. These problems can be expensive to repair and may require replacement of major components.
- Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump can fail, leading to stalling and other engine problems. This issue can be particularly dangerous if it occurs while driving, as it can lead to a loss of power and control over the vehicle.
- Water Pump Failure: The water pump can fail, leading to overheating and potential engine damage. This problem can be expensive to repair and may require replacement of the entire water pump assembly.
- Timing Chain Issues: The timing chain, which synchronizes the engine's operations, can manifest problems that affect the vehicle's performance. This issue can be caused by wear and tear or lack of maintenance and may require replacement of the timing chain or other engine components.
- Ignition Key Problems: Issues with the ignition system, such as the key getting stuck or refusing to turn, can be particularly frustrating. This problem can be caused by a faulty ignition lock cylinder or a larger electrical system issue.
- Power Window Failure: The failure of power windows to open or close is not just a matter of convenience but can also be a safety issue. This problem can be caused by faulty window motors, deteriorated regulators, or electrical issues within the door's wiring.
It is important to note that these problems are not necessarily indicative of all 2016 Buick Regals, and many owners have reported having few or no issues with their vehicles. However, it is always a good idea to be aware of potential problems and to address them promptly if they do occur. Regular maintenance and servicing can help prevent many of these issues from developing, and prompt attention to any warning signs or symptoms can help ensure that repairs are made before they become more serious and expensive.

- VIN: 2G4GS5GX0G9
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: My tires were Black when I bought them at Wittlins in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin in 2020. They have been continualy turning brown on the outside of tire. Now they are a beige color on the outside of tire. It seems the tires are aging terribly. I complained to Wittlins a few times about tires discoloration and the manager keeps telling me the tires are wearing fine and said discoloration is normal. Maybe a little discoloration but not like this and I do not even live in a warm climate. 235/50R18/SL (Tires)
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-13
- VIN: 2G4GS5GXXG9
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I purchased the 2016 Buick Regal used in 2021 with 40,000 miles., it now has close to 70,000 miles. It’s still in well cared for mint condition, except for the driver side headlight. Condensation appeared and has been getting worse, dealership says the only option is buying another complete headlight assembly for $1200.00. The LED part of that headlight has stopped working., it’s inevitable that the bulbs themselves with fail also. This is a safety issue. It’s absurdly cost prohibitive for me and most everybody else to spend that kind of money to fix a headlight.., and $1200.00 is the cost of the part alone, we’d be adding labor to that. This is a manufacturer defect that so many people are suffering with. They say we’re getting no relief from this because not enough people have filed complaints to the NHTSA. GM should be compelled to provide this part to us at a much more reasonable price. I’m just a poor widower dad with a daughter in college. Thank you.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-23
- VIN: 2G4GS5GX2G9
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: We purchased this vehicle in May 2016 and from the beginning had strange issues with the engine. It was in and out of the dealer with them trying to figure out the exact problem. They could not, so they contacted GM for approval for an engine replacement. We were concerned about going this route but were assured it would be taken care of for the life of the car. After the replacement in July 2016, the car seemed to be better but other weird issues arose. The engine always made a squealing noise that we were told was fine. We have done all required maintenance, recalls, and regular service. For the past 2 months, the car has had strange shifting issues. It was taken in to be looked at and nothing was found. The transmission received its' routine maintenance on schedule. It still was a problem and we were told to drive it until a code appeared. The car got progressively worse and had great difficulty shifting, which had us involved in a few close calls. Took it to a different dealer that also didn't find a problem. They said since there was no code, but seemed transmission related, they would drain it and replace the fluid. This also didn't work. We continued to drive the car and almost ended up stranded in the middle of the night while driving the freeway. The car became almost uncontrollable. We made it home. But, the following day while driving it to work, the car was jerking, stalled, and then lost the capability of reverse and neutral. We had to have it towed and a new transmission put in. We were told by the dealer that there was an explosion in the transmission, and we were lucky we were somewhere safe when the car died. It's very frustrating paying for a vehicle that didn't seem right from the beginning. We have put well over $6,500 in trying to repair a car that seems like it was never right in the first place. We have been fortunate that neither of us, or any of our children, have been hurt considering the major issues with our car.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-04
- VIN: 2G4GL5EX1G9
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I was driving and all of a sudden my power steering light came on telling me to drive with care. The wheel tightened up within seconds my abs lights on, no all wheel drive, stabilize for tracation went off. All safety equipment went hairwired. We looked up the part and found out that there was a recall on the steering power prior however everyone is telling us not for our car. I only had it for less than 3 years. The car was manufactured in Sept of 2015 which was part of the recall but they said it wasn't the style car. I had to have it towed back home. This seems like a serious problem for this vehicle and GM should fix this problem before someone gets hurt or worse.

- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-02
- VIN: 2G4GK5EX6G9
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I purchased the buick regal new in Feb 2016. After about two years, it skid on a perfect road surface in a perfect weather, the traction control light and the engine light came on, but disappeared after 30 seconds or so. The problem was scary enough that I brought the car to a neighborhood dealership to see if there was any safety recall for that issue. There was none. The replaced a sensor or something to fix the problem. It has not happened again until two weeks ago. Exactly the same thing happened, skid briefly on a perfect road surface in a perfect weather condition, skid light and the engine light came on, but disappeared after a minute. I brought back the car to the dealership and asked them find the original record for fixing the problem. But, they insisted it was not the same issue, this time it was my old tires that caused the problem. I got all my tires and brakes replaced, but still experienced the same problem. Given severity of the safety hazard, now I am afraid to drive the car. I could easily been in an accident if there were more cars around during either of the skidding incidents. I am surprised there was no report from other car owners. I could not be the only one experienced this problem. Very serious safety hazard for sure.

Great car... 2016 Buick Regal Turbo 11 FWD. It's super fast, quiet, and smooth. It's also great in the snow and has the most beautiful interior I've seen, even nicer and cleaner than Lexus and other so-called luxury cars. I love it!
-
Looking for a certified or slightly used car with low mileage? I recently purchased a 2015 Regal Premium II AWD with only 1,600 miles on it and saved a lot of money. The savings made it a fantastic deal on a great car. There may be other options available at full price, but this car is a lot of fun to drive and comes with many nice and useful features. I highly recommend it! I'm glad I made the purchase and I'm sure it will be a great car to drive for a long time.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It's great to know that it's been so reliable for you over the past 5 years. The AWD system sounds excellent, and it's wonderful that the car is so quiet and powerful. Thank you for sharing your experience!
-
This Regal AWD has been the best car you have ever owned. It's quick, handles well, has great gas mileage, is quiet, and feels very solid. It's like owning a German sport sedan without the high maintenance costs.

Four months ago, I leased a 2016 Buick Regal 4-cylinder turbo. Although it looked good inside and out, and my wife loved the red paint job, I found the ride a little too stiff and thought it was a little overpriced. Additionally, the blind spot monitoring in the side view mirrors lacks an audible signal, which I have in my other cars and has literally saved my life. Unfortunately, in less than 1500 miles, the transmission blew, which was a huge disappointment. As a 79-year-old, I don't need the hassle of another problem sometime in the next 3 years of the lease. However, Buick and the dealer made it a bit difficult to get a new one. I would recommend sticking with Japanese cars to avoid my mistake!

I purchased this car because it had only 29000 miles and I absolutely love the interior. However, when driving on back roads where I live, I can feel and hear every bump. Additionally, there is a constant noise coming from the motor. While it is smooth on smooth roads, my 2004 Cadillac actually drives smoother. Unfortunately, I am now stuck with this car. Prior to this, I had a 2016 Buick Regal which had a persistent issue with water pooling in the trunk. Despite the authorized Buick dealer's efforts to fix the issue, my husband and I were frustrated when we discovered that they had drilled holes in the bottom of the trunk to get rid of the water (which the dealer denied). Buick is aware of the number of holes in the trunk. Eventually, we grew tired of dealing with the people who sold us the car and decided to trade it in for a Caddy.

I purchased my 2016 Regal brand new and was pleased with the car, particularly the turbo engine. As someone who drives frequently for work, I have put a lot of miles on the car, and unfortunately, it has been to the dealer three times. The first two times were due to bad coils, and the third time was because it overheated and blew the rear head gasket. Fortunately, I had purchased an extended warranty. However, just 20 days after the head gasket was replaced, the car overheated again. I am understandably upset, and the dealer seems surprised. I am currently awaiting an explanation for this recurring issue. It is worth noting that all maintenance has been done at the dealer.

In September 2022, I purchased a 2016 Buick Regal with over 94,000 miles after my 2014 Nissan Sentra was deemed a total loss. While I did notice some shaking in the car, I didn't think much of it at the time. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car in the following months, including difficulty starting in cold weather and acceleration problems. Despite some repairs, the car continued to have issues, including shaking and stalling. Ultimately, I decided to trade in the car and regret not keeping my trusty 2000 Ford Taurus with close to 176,000 miles. Although the gas mileage was similar on a recent trip, the Taurus would have handled the journey better. I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I recently purchased a 2015 Toyota Yaris with over 123,000 miles on it, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. It's been such a great upgrade from my old Buick!

I wish I had test driven this car more before buying it. I noticed a lot of road noise and not enough leg room for a tall driver. I bought it used with 5000 miles and paid way too much, but still a lot less than a new one. I don't think it's worth paying over $30000 for a new one. The car feels like a cheap economy car, more like a Kia or Hyundai than a Buick. If you're considering this car, I recommend taking it for a test drive for at least an hour on the interstate to get a better sense of the road noise.
