1999 Buick Regal problems
The Buick Regal is a line of mid-size cars marketed by Buick since 1973. For nearly its entire production, the Regal has served as the premium mid-size/intermediate offering of the Buick product range. Introduced as a submodel of the Buick Century, the model line is currently in its sixth generation. From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Regal served as the Buick counterpart of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.
Originally introduced as a personal luxury coupe, the Regal was later expanded to a full model line. To showcase its success in NASCAR racing, from 1982 to 1987, Buick introduced the Buick Regal Grand National, Regal T-Type, and the limited-production Buick GNX. During the 1990s, while the four-door sedan superseded the two-door coupe entirely, forced-induction engines made their return, with superchargers replacing turbochargers.
For 1999, the Buick Regal inaugurated the sale of GM vehicles in the Chinese market, with the 1997 design lasting through 2008. Following the 2004 model year, Buick retired the nameplate in North America, with the Regal replaced by the Buick LaCrosse.
For 2008, Opel introduced the Opel Insignia as its largest sedan, with Buick rebranding the model line as the Regal for the Chinese market. For 2011, GM reintroduced the Regal to North America, rebranding the Insignia sedan for North America. For 2018, Buick introduced the second-generation Opel Insignia, sourcing all production from Germany; alongside a first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was the first Buick station wagon in 22 years.
After 2020, as the division shifted away from car model lines, Buick ended sales of the Regal in North America.

Common 1999 Buick Regal problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1999 Buick Regal, several common problems have been reported:
- Key Getting Stuck in the Ignition: Owners have experienced issues with the key getting stuck in the ignition, particularly in models from 1994 to 2016. This problem is often related to the automatic transmission failing or a faulty wire that relays information about the gear shifter. Restarting the vehicle or adjusting the gears has been reported as temporary solutions.
- Mass Air Flow Sensor and Crankshaft Position Sensor Issues: The 1999 Buick Regal, along with models from 1994 to 2004, tend to develop problems with the mass air flow sensor (MAF) and crankshaft position sensor (CPS). Owners have reported instances of the vehicle stuttering and stalling randomly at various speeds, including highway speeds. Replacing the faulty sensors is the recommended solution, with replacement costs ranging from $20 to $70 for MAF sensors and $20 to $40 for CPS.
- Power Window System Malfunction: Owners of Buick Regal models from 1990 to 2011 have reported issues with the power windows suddenly stopping working. This problem is often attributed to a faulty switch. While the problem may intermittently come and go, replacing the window switches, costing between $10 to $80, is a more affordable solution compared to replacing the power window motor or regulator.
These common problems with the 1999 Buick Regal highlight key issues that owners have faced over the years, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt repairs to ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

1999 Buick Regal recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 1999 Buick Regal.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
- Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
- Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engines front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.

This is a fantastic car to drive! It handles well in most driving and weather situations. Since August 1999, I have driven nearly 80,000 miles and have had no repairs other than normal wear and tear. Both the interior and exterior have held up well to the wear and tear of the road conditions. Even in the winter when they salt and sand the roads, there has been no major damage to the car.

I've always liked this car! After reading the reviews, I was convinced that it was the right choice for me. My only regret is that I didn't get a GS. I was a bit worried about rising fuel prices since 93 octane is recommended, but I'm sure it would have been worth it. Luckily, I was able to find a Regal LS that looks just like a GS, complete with 16 inch wheels, leather, and the gran touring package. I purchased it with 38K miles and have put on about 10K since then. So far, I've only needed to get oil changes. The car feels tight and the engine is strong. It's true that the gas mileage around town could be better, but overall, I would highly recommend this car!

My '99 Buick Regal GS has been absolutely spectacular. It was the fastest sedan built in North America until 2003, and yet it remained a true sleeper. The seats are fabulous, especially for big guys, with plenty of legroom and headroom, even with a sunroof. The car has a lot of glass and an open cockpit, which makes for a very inviting and comfortable ride. The ride-handling balance is the best of any car in America when driven at 6/10ths - it's a beautiful combination of supple and firm. The Monsoon stereo is fantastic, and the huge trunk can easily accommodate 4 golf bags. The flowing exterior lines look great and are quite distinctive. So far, it has been rock-solid reliable. The only real downside has been the poor gas mileage, but I must admit that I am guilty of indulging in leadfooted pleasures.

This car is truly outstanding! It surpasses my previous 1995 Taurus SHO (which was already a great car) in every way. It is the fastest American sedan out there (yes, even faster than a Buick!). The current headlines on Buick quality are absolutely correct; this car is put together very well. The torsional rigidity is light years beyond my SHO. If you can get past the oxymoron 'Buick Sports Sedan', you'll find that this is simply the best all-around American sedan you can own. No kidding!

The Regal GS boasts impressive acceleration, but the front seat could benefit from better back support. I personally use a back support cushion that I purchased for about $20, which has made a significant difference. The horn is small and difficult to hit, which is not ideal and could be improved. As the car ages, the engine seems to be getting gradually louder. However, the car is extremely comfortable for long drives, especially with the addition of a cheap back support cushion. Overall, we love the car and believe it offers great value for the money, especially with its super great Monsoon radio.

I bought my 99 Regal as my first car and it has been a good car overall. Although, I have had some complaints about the low fuel economy (I expected much higher) and the unexpected failure of the transmission at 120k miles. My suggestion, which my friends tell me is good for any car, would be to avoid buying one with over 100k miles or be prepared for potential problems.

This car provided decent service and reasonable mileage, but I did encounter some issues with the trim and interior parts. Unfortunately, the glove compartment door fell off with little use and the driver's door continually got out of line and had to be realigned. Additionally, the electrical system occasionally malfunctioned, such as the headlights turning off for 5-10 seconds and then coming back on, and the driver's window occasionally going down when starting the car. Despite these annoying little problems, overall it was a good car.

I bought this car with the expectation that it would last me a long time, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. I purchased it used from a GM dealer with only 16,000 miles on it. Just before the warranty ran out at 36,000 miles, I started experiencing issues with the transmission. Although I had to replace a transmission solenoid, rack and pinion steering, and fuel pump at my own expense after the warranty expired, I still held onto hope that the car would improve. However, the headlights began to get hazy at around 60,000 miles, and by the time I sold the car, they were almost opaque. Additionally, the power rear window regulator went bad, and the part alone would have cost me $328. I hope that GM can improve their quality control in the future, but for now, I won't be purchasing any more GM cars.

I required a new power steering, air conditioning unit, intake manifold gasket, fuel pump, starter, and sway bar replacement, which cost over $1,000. Despite these issues, I remain confident in my decision to not purchase another GM car.
