Common 1994 Ford Tempo problems

The Ford Tempo, produced from 1984 to 1994, has been noted for several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  • Poor Idle and Engine Stalls: The Ford Tempo has been known for poor idle performance, which can lead to engine stalls. This issue is often attributed to faulty ignition systems, including short-circuiting ignition switches, or issues with the fuel system. These problems can be dangerous, as they can cause the vehicle to stall while driving, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Hesitation on Acceleration: Many Ford Tempo owners have reported issues with hesitation or stuttering during acceleration. This problem can be caused by various factors, including faulty fuel injectors, clogged fuel filters, or issues with the engine's air intake system.
  • Engine Failure: The 2.3-liter HSC engine, specifically designed for the Tempo, was prone to failure. When Ford decided to discontinue this engine, it required the development of a new engine for the Tempo, which might have meant a major redesign. This led to the discontinuation of the Tempo in 1994.
  • Fuel System Issues: The Ford Tempo's fuel system has been known to have several problems, including fuel pumps that keep stalling and fuel pump failures. These issues can lead to stalling while driving or difficulty starting the vehicle.
  • Transmission Problems: Some Ford Tempo owners have reported transmission issues, including slipping or failing transmissions. These problems can lead to difficulty shifting gears or a loss of power while driving.
  • Cooling System Failures: The cooling system in the Ford Tempo has also been known to have issues, including faulty cooling fans, which can pose a fire risk. These problems can lead to overheating and potential engine damage.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are a common problem in the Ford Tempo, particularly in the 1998 model year. These leaks can lead to a loss of engine oil, which can cause significant engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Vibration: Some Ford Tempo owners have reported issues with vibrations while driving, which can be caused by various factors, including worn-out suspension components or issues with the wheels.
  • Electrical Issues: The Ford Tempo has also been known to have electrical issues, including problems with the automatic seat belts, which can lead to injury in the event of a collision.
  • Poor Build Quality: Many Ford Tempo owners have reported issues with the vehicle's overall build quality, including poor fit and finish, rattles, and squeaks. These problems can detract from the driving experience and lead to a loss of confidence in the vehicle's reliability.

In summary, the Ford Tempo has been known for a variety of issues, including engine problems, fuel system failures, transmission issues, cooling system failures, oil leaks, vibrations, electrical issues, poor build quality, and safety concerns related to automatic seat belts. These problems have contributed to the vehicle's reputation as one of the most problematic cars to hit the road.

I WAS ADVISED BY THE MECHANICS THAT FIXED IT ($300 PLUS LATER) THAT A FAILURE AT HIGHWAY SPEED WOULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC FOR ANYONE IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME. A FRIEND OF MINE SUGGESTED THAT I CHECK IF OTHERS HAD THIS PROBLEM, AND I CAME ACROSS THIS SITE. IT LOOKS LIKE OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM, IF THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN 97V019000 IS AN INDICATION OF SUCH. AS FAR AS I KNOW, WE WERE NEVER NOTIFIED THAT SOME FORD TEMPOS WERE POTENTIAL FIRE TRAPS. MY HUSBAND COULD HAVE BEEN SEVERELY BURNED, BUT FORTUNATELY, HIS JACKET TOOK THE BRUNT OF THE FLAMES. *JB

Negative 1994 Ford Tempo car reviews

  1. Tatum Stiedemann 2025-01-07

This American car has been fairly reliable with over 100k miles. Here's my list of repairs: a partial transmission replacement for $700 at 80k miles, brake repairs for $40 and $90, replacement of 6 window lifters (which was a pain), suspension and tie rod repairs for $400 at 70k miles, a starter replacement for $125 at 100k miles, and a pending radiator repair. It just needs a small fix for the A/C. Anyone who expects too much from life probably shouldn't choose the Tempo, but it's a good cheap car. It's perfect for your high school kid to drive without worrying about ruining it.

  2. Donnie Murphy 2024-11-17

I'm currently driving my second Tempo. The first one I owned was a 1992, which I found to be a better car as it didn't have those annoying automatic seatbelts. I purchased my current car in 2005 with only 23K miles on it (it now has 78K), but it did have some issues. Over time, I've had to replace the starter, fuel pump, distributor, wiring, some front-end component that holds the motor in, brakes, and likely other things that I've forgotten. Despite all of this, it's still fairly cheap transportation, starts well, and is quite comfortable to drive. I've even driven it from California to Canada six times! It does have a tendency to overheat, and I'm not sure why, but I still like the car and enjoy driving it. Would I get a third Tempo? Not likely.

  3. Kendrick Hegmann 2024-09-22

While this car may not be the safest or most reliable option, it is important to note that regular maintenance and part replacements can help keep it running smoothly. Additionally, it is advisable to drive with caution and avoid any collisions, as the bumper may not withstand high impact.

  4. Stephen Medhurst 2024-09-08

I was lucky enough to receive this car as a gift from a kind lady, but it was in pretty bad shape. As someone who enjoys fixing cars as a hobby, I decided to take on the challenge. After investing $1,950 and countless hours of hard work, the car is now running as well as it possibly can, despite its high mileage. Whenever someone asks me about my car, I like to joke that 'the only thing it passes is the gas station'. While it may not be the most glamorous car out there, it's definitely reliable and would make a great option for a high school student. It's taken a few hits over the years, but it keeps on running. Just be careful not to hit any curbs too hard, as it can cause some damage to the body.

  5. Armando Langworth 2024-08-15

I've owned the car for a year now and it seems like I'm constantly putting money into it. If you're looking to buy a car, I would suggest checking out other towns before settling on this one!

Positive 1994 Ford Tempo car reviews

  1. Fletcher Gulgowski 2025-01-05

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share a little bit about my trusty car. I bought my Tempo brand new and even took it on a 4000 mile round trip to California when it had 188000 miles on it. It got an impressive 35 mpg! Recently, I was interested in trading it in for a new 2013 Fusion, but the dealer only offered me $150 for it. Despite that, I still have my Tempo and it now has 203050 miles on it. It's been a reliable car that can take me anywhere I want to go. If the Fusion lasts as long as my Tempo, I'll be a happy camper!

  2. Haskell Kunde 2024-10-07

Hi there! I noticed that you're a low mileage driver in New York City. I just wanted to let you know that this car is a great choice for you! It's dependable and fits easily into parking spots. Plus, it's great to hear that you've never had any trouble with it and have only needed regular maintenance repairs. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  3. Dalton Vandervort 2024-09-19

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've had this car for over 10 years, and it's been a great car. It's been very reliable - nothing major has gone wrong with it.

  4. Dejon Yundt 2024-06-11

I'm glad to hear that you've had little to no problems with your car! It's great that you've been able to keep it maintained so well. I did notice that you mentioned having to replace the speedometer cable a few times due to noise, but overall it sounds like it's been a perfect car for 13 years.

  5. Horace DuBuque 2024-06-06

This car is an absolute joy to drive. It handles exceptionally well and boasts impressive fuel efficiency. Despite being involved in an accident and subsequently totaled, I remain confident in its reliability and longevity. With over 144K miles, it has required only routine maintenance. The 5 speed manual transmission, brakes, engine, power steering, and all other equipment remain original. I highly recommend this vehicle.
