Buick Lesabre problems

The Buick LeSabre is a full-size car made by the division Buick of General Motors from 1959 until 2005. Prior to 1959, this position had been retained by the full-size Buick Special model (1936–58). The "LeSabre", which is French for "the sabre", was Buick's mid-level full-size sedan above the Special but below the Electra during the 1960s then remained in its market position when the Electra was replaced with the Park Avenue. The LeSabre was available as a 2-door convertible, sedan or hardtop, a 4-door sedan or hardtop and station wagon throughout its production.

History of model

The LeSabre nameplate made its first appearance on the 1951 Le Sabre show car, which introduced the world to aircraft-inspired design elements such as the wrap-around windshield and tail fins. In 1959 LeSabre became the new moniker for what had previously been known as the Buick Special. The Buick LeSabre was offered in a full line of body styles except between 1965 and 1969 when its station wagon variant was dropped from Buick's full-size offerings. In 1977, the LeSabre was downsized along with other GM full-size models, and was available only in pillared coupe, sedan and wagon body styles.

In addition to being Buick's entry level vehicle, the LeSabre was consistently Buick's best selling full-size car. Of the four nameplates introduced in 1959 (LeSabre, Invicta, Electra, Electra 225), the LeSabre nameplate lasted the longest.

From 1959 to 1961, the LeSabre was powered by a 364 cubic-inch V8, which was smaller than the 401 cubic-inch V8 used in the more expensive Invicta and Electra models. The 364, which was previously used in all Buicks in 1957 and 1958, was rated at 250 horsepower (190 kW) in standard form with an "economy" 235 horsepower (175 kW) version offered as a "no cost" option in 1960-61 and an optional power-pack version with four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts that was rated at 300 horsepower (220 kW). For 1962–63, the LeSabre came standard with a two-barrel carbureted version of the 401 V8 rated at 280 horsepower (210 kW), or a no-cost "economy" low-compression version rated at 260 horsepower (190 kW). Starting in 1964, all LeSabre models except the Estate Wagon shared their drivetrains with the midsize Buick models by switching to those models' smaller-displacement V8s at least as standard equipment for the next few years with cubic-inch displacements of 300 (1964–65), 340 (1966–67) and 350 (1968–76). A large-displacement would not reappear in a LeSabre until 1970 when a 455 cubic-inch V8 was introduced as an option and was offered through 1976. Beginning with the downsized 1977 models and continuing through three subsequent generations of front-drive LeSabres introduced in 1986, 1992 and 2000, Buick's 3.8-liter (231 cubic-inch) V6 would become the standard engine for most LeSabre models and V8 engines were dropped (except in station wagons) after the last of the rear-drive LeSabre sedans and coupes came off the line in 1985.

For most years from 1959 to 1971, a three-speed manual transmission was standard equipment on all LeSabres but rarely ordered. Far more popular was the Turbine Drive automatic transmission (previously known as Dynaflow) along with power steering and power brakes. For 1961 and 1962, the automatic transmission was standard on the LeSabre and all other full-sized Buicks but in 1963 was moved back to the option list on LeSabres. For 1964, the Dynaflow-based Turbine Drive was replaced by two new automatic transmissions, the two-speed Super Turbine 300 and the three-speed Super Turbine 400. A four-speed manual transmission was offered as a LeSabre option from 1963 to 1965 but only a small number of cars were so equipped. Automatic transmissions would once again reappear as standard equipment on LeSabres in mid-1971 and continue in such form until the model line's demise after 2005.

LeSabres were rear-drive six-passenger vehicles from 1959 to 1985 (station wagons through 1990) featuring separate body-on-frame construction along with a longitudinally mounted front engine. The first downsized generation of LeSabres introduced in 1977 retained the rear-drive and body-on-frame construction, while the later-generation models introduced in 1986 switched to front-wheel-drive, unit-body construction and transversely mounted engine. Convertibles were offered each year through 1975 while two- and four-door hardtops were dropped after 1976 and only pillared body styles were offered from 1977 to 2005. Station wagons were offered through 1964 and then dropped for several years until being reintroduced in 1970 and continued until 1990 after which year they were moved to the revived Roadmaster series. LeSabres come in two versions: Custom and Limited.

Common Buick Lesabre problems

The Buick LeSabre, known for its spaciousness and comfort, has been a popular choice among car owners for many years. However, like all vehicles, it is not without its problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by LeSabre owners:

  1. Fuel Level Sensor Failure: The most common problem for all Buicks, including the LeSabre, is fuel level sensor failures. When the fuel level sensor fails, the car’s fuel gauge shows the incorrect fuel level, which can cause people to run out of gas. The fuel level sensor has to be replaced to fix the issue, costing around $679 to $793. This problem affects 1996 and newer LeSabres with an average mileage of 120,000. When the problem occurs, it’s recommended to replace the fuel pump, which is included in the above estimate.
  2. Erratic Shifting: Transmissions on the Buick LeSabre are generally reliable but can occasionally act up with erratic shifting. The most common cause of this issue is a failing pressure control solenoid. This problem is common in 2000-2004 LeSabres.
  3. Power Window Issues: Power window problems are common in the 2002 LeSabre. The most reported problem is the power window stopping to work. The average cost to fix this issue is $300 with an average mileage of 80,000.
  4. Intake Gasket Leaks: LeSabre owners have reported issues with intake gasket leaks. This problem is common in the 2000-2005 models. The intake gasket can leak oil, coolant, or both, which can lead to serious engine problems if not addressed.
  5. Rear Air Ride Shocks: The rear air ride shocks can fail, causing a uncomfortable ride. This problem is common in the 2000-2005 models. The air shocks are expensive and don't last very long, so some owners have converted them to coilover shocks.
  6. Front Wheel Bearings: LeSabre owners have reported a growling noise while driving, which is often caused by failing front wheel bearings. This problem is common in the 2000-2005 models.
  7. Blower Motor: The blower motor, located under the glove box, can fail. This problem is common in the 2000-2005 models. If the blower motor fails, the air conditioning and heating systems will not work properly.

These are just a few of the common problems reported by Buick LeSabre owners. If you own a LeSabre or are considering purchasing one, it's important to be aware of these potential issues. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems or catch them early before they become more serious.

  • Summary: The backup camera will stay in 'night' brightness mode for 15 seconds while backing out of the garage into daylight. This makes the video screen usless until the 15 second delay is over. I have asked several times at the dealership since I purchased this vehicle new, and they say nothing can be done. Not only is this a huge safety issue but it also is an enviromental issue as may times I must wait in the driveway with the car needlessly idling until the 15 seconds is up. This is seems to be a simple software update to remove the delay when the car is in reverse.

  • VIN: 1G4HP52K93U
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: On [XXX] original Steering Rack and Pinion was replaced at 138974 miles by established reputable garage with NAPA part which was remanufactured. That part failed [XXX] at 141443 miles. That part failed [XXX] at 145999 miles and was replaced with NAPA part which was remanufactured. That part failed and was replaced at [XXX] at 157999 miles with another NAPA remanufactured part. That part failed about July 2023 and has not been replaced . The repair garage that had been replacing this rack and pinion stated they will no longer replace it since the outcome would be the same. The problem in all instances is that the hydraulic fluid leaks out of the unit through the rack and pinion which in turn affects the steering. The leak starts slowly and eventually increases to the point where the fluid will leak from the unit even when the car is not in use. I reported the problem to NAPA in writing [XXX] and received a telephonic request for documentation [XXX] which was furnished along with a statement that this matter was being looked into. I am not interested in any monetary refund but am only concerned about the safety of parts sold as "remanufactured" . The automobile repair shop is aware of my concern and supports my complaint. Both the repair shop and myself have documentation. I believe that based upon the number of times this part has failed indicates a potential problem in at the remanufactured automobile parts industry for at least this particular part and possibly others. I am willing to furnish any information I have. Thank you -- [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

A few seconds later, there was a large amount of smoke coming from under the hood. I opened the hood to see a large fire had started. My son, who heard the loud bang, came outside and saw the flames from under the hood. He ran into the house, grabbed a fire extinguisher, and attempted to put out the fire. He got the fire out but it was difficult. I had the car looked at by a mechanic and told me that the intake manifold had literally exploded. He has stated that he has never seen anything like this. It appears that the exploding manifold ruptured a fuel line. He told me there was a recall on this vehicle relating to a rupturing manifold and leaking fuel but that my vehicle had already had the recall performed. He thought that the new parts may be defective which is why I am reporting this incident.

Latest negative Buick Lesabre car reviews

  1. Ben Conroy 2025-03-27

    Vehicle year: 1994

I purchased a '93 Buick LeSabre back in September 2002, when it had 110,000 miles on the clock. Fast forward to summer 2007, and it's still going strong with 147,000 miles. The car has been quite reliable, with annual repair costs averaging no more than $1,000, and often less. While I've had to replace things like the starter and engine wiring, these are to be expected for a car with such high mileage. The car is incredibly comfortable and spacious, making for a noise-free and enjoyable ride. While it may not be the most competitive in terms of handling, it's not meant for racing. Fuel efficiency is also not the best, but given the quality of the car, it's worth it. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

  2. Randy Schmitt 2025-03-18

    Vehicle year: 1998

The car has less than 80K miles, yet I was faced with a $1,284 repair bill due to a design flaw that was admitted by the dealer's mechanic. The plenumn on this car is known to leak, allowing coolant and water to enter the engine and affect the function of the pistons, ultimately causing the engine to lock. The starter will blow out if you attempt to crank the car after the engine locks. The dealer's mechanic has reported repairing at least 10 cars with similar problems resulting from this design flaw in the last year. Despite this, GM has not issued a recall to address the issue. It is worth noting that this problem has been present since 1996 models.

  3. Elroy King 2025-03-18

    Vehicle year: 1996

I drive this car 7,500 miles/year and although it has its issues, I'm grateful for the convenience it provides. The leather seats can be a bit uncomfortable after an hour, but overall it's a decent ride. At 86k, the transmission is still working, but I do wonder how much life it has left. Unfortunately, I have had some trouble with the A/C, but it's nothing that can't be fixed. I have had to replace a few parts, but it's all part of the maintenance process. The gas mileage could be better, but it's not terrible. Overall, it's a good car, but I do miss my Crown Victoria.

  4. Triston Raynor 2025-03-16

    Vehicle year: 2003

As a proud owner of a Buick, I was disappointed to encounter some issues with my vehicle shortly after the warranty expired. However, I confidently took it to a mechanic who was able to diagnose and fix the problems with the transmission switch, air conditioning, and intake manifold seal. Although there were some costs involved, I was pleased with the outcome and grateful for the partial 'goodwill' warranty coverage. Despite the rough shifting of the transmission, I was able to sell the car without any further issues.

  5. Robin Aufderhar 2025-03-06

    Vehicle year: 2003

I am experiencing a distinct vibration on the steering wheel, dashboard, front seats, and brake pedal. This occurs at slow speeds (2-3 mph) and stops when the motor is running in idle and the transmission is in drive. When I put it in neutral, the vibration eases. I have had it in for service four times, but the service manager says that this is normal. I have driven a Ford 4-cylinder and an Oldsmobile 6-cylinder, both with no vibration. I have complained to Buick Company, but they have given me no hope that they can fix the vibration. However, they have promised to write me a letter of explanation. I am on the verge of filing with the Florida Lemon Law.

Hey there! If you're checking under the hood, be sure to keep an eye out for any stickers related to transmission service. It's possible that a previous owner noticed some early signs of transmission trouble and had it looked at. I actually had a similar sticker on my car and ended up needing a complete transmission overhaul in the first year of ownership. It was a bit of a pain, but I'm glad I caught it early. Unfortunately, the repair bill was around $1800.

    Vehicle year: 1994

I bought this car for one thousand dollars and I've had it for nine months without any problems at all. I have to say, it's one of the best cars I've ever driven. I wish I had known how good this car was before I bought my Ford in 2005 - I never would have bought it. Driving my Buick is like driving on clouds.

    Vehicle year: 2002

I must say, I have never had a complaint with any General Motors vehicle I've owned in the past. However, my 2002 Buick LeSabre has been the most reliable automobile I have ever owned. I purchased it in February 2014 for $5,000 with approximately 86,000 miles on the odometer, and now it has approximately 223,000 miles showing on the odometer. In just 27,000 miles, this vehicle will exceed the 'Quarter Million Mile' threshold. In January 2018, I needed to install a Jasper re-built transmission (181,000 miles on the odometer), but the engine runs as strong as ever without any need for overhaul. I change the engine oil/filter and rotate the tires every 3,000 miles, and I change the spark plugs and wires every 100,000 miles. I use Valvoline's standard (10W-30) oil, which is considerably less expensive than synthetic oil now required in modern vehicles. The engine has a cast iron block, thereby alleviating the need for the plastic 'under motor protection' panel. According to my records (which I religiously maintain), the four General Tires which were installed back in October 2014 now have approximately 120,000 miles use! I use regular grade 'Top Tier' fuel and average 22 mpg. The acceleration is most acceptable, and while my wife's previous Volkswagen Jetta TDI and current Honda CR-V have better handling, I cannot say that the Buick's ability to tackle curves is in any way unacceptable. Most importantly, the exterior of the car remains unblemished and without rust, the interior leather seats have not cracked or faded, and the dashboard controls and gauges remain easily visible and accessible. It is a proven workhorse, and I can only hope (and reasonably expect) that Buick is continuing the same quality in its current production models. Of course, I will not know soon since I have no plans to sell my 17-year-old sedan.

  4. Sofia Runte 2025-03-25

    Vehicle year: 2003

I got this car for my daughter's first vehicle. Although it's old and quite spacious, it has been reliable so far. Despite having been in an accident, it only took a couple of hundred to get it back on the road. The stereo system is fantastic and the leather seats, while showing some signs of wear, are still in good condition. Additionally, the trunk is incredibly spacious. I would definitely consider purchasing another one in the future.

  5. Barrett Tremblay 2025-03-25

    Vehicle year: 2005

I wish I could find another car to hold in reserve. This car has been my trusty office on wheels, with 146k miles on it now. Despite the mileage, it has required very little maintenance - just some repairs to the air ride, one rotor (my fault), and some light bulbs. Of course, I've kept up with the regular maintenance like oil filters, brake pads, and air filters. This car handles well in the snow, although it's not quite as good as a 4wd. However, with a little bit of care, it gets the job done. The car stops very well on dry roads or in snow and has never thrown me any surprises. On the coastal plain, I can get up to 32 mpg on the highway if I'm cruising steadily. Stop and go traffic does hurt the mileage, though. In the hills, I get between 24 and 25 mpg if I'm not trying to stretch the mileage. This is a big car, but the ride is wonderful and it's very quiet (unless you run with a window down). The front struts need to be replaced to help the ride, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. The speedometer is broken, but I use my Garmin instead. Unfortunately, the car does not have rear headrests in case of an accident, but it does seat 6 people. I wish I could find another car like this with only 50k miles on it - I would buy it instantly! Update: The car now has 173k miles on it. Recently, I had to put wheel bearings on both sides of the front axles, but the engine still doesn't use oil. I couldn't be happier with this car. It has knocked my 85 Subaru wagon off the throne in the lifelong
