2002 Buick Lesabre problems
The Buick LeSabre is a full-size car made by the division Buick of General Motors from 1959 until 2005. Prior to 1959, this position had been retained by the full-size Buick Special model (1936–58). The "LeSabre", which is French for "the sabre", was Buick's mid-level full-size sedan above the Special but below the Electra during the 1960s then remained in its market position when the Electra was replaced with the Park Avenue. The LeSabre was available as a 2-door convertible, sedan or hardtop, a 4-door sedan or hardtop and station wagon throughout its production.
History of model
The LeSabre nameplate made its first appearance on the 1951 Le Sabre show car, which introduced the world to aircraft-inspired design elements such as the wrap-around windshield and tail fins. In 1959 LeSabre became the new moniker for what had previously been known as the Buick Special. The Buick LeSabre was offered in a full line of body styles except between 1965 and 1969 when its station wagon variant was dropped from Buick's full-size offerings. In 1977, the LeSabre was downsized along with other GM full-size models, and was available only in pillared coupe, sedan and wagon body styles.
In addition to being Buick's entry level vehicle, the LeSabre was consistently Buick's best selling full-size car. Of the four nameplates introduced in 1959 (LeSabre, Invicta, Electra, Electra 225), the LeSabre nameplate lasted the longest.
From 1959 to 1961, the LeSabre was powered by a 364 cubic-inch V8, which was smaller than the 401 cubic-inch V8 used in the more expensive Invicta and Electra models. The 364, which was previously used in all Buicks in 1957 and 1958, was rated at 250 horsepower (190 kW) in standard form with an "economy" 235 horsepower (175 kW) version offered as a "no cost" option in 1960-61 and an optional power-pack version with four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts that was rated at 300 horsepower (220 kW). For 1962–63, the LeSabre came standard with a two-barrel carbureted version of the 401 V8 rated at 280 horsepower (210 kW), or a no-cost "economy" low-compression version rated at 260 horsepower (190 kW). Starting in 1964, all LeSabre models except the Estate Wagon shared their drivetrains with the midsize Buick models by switching to those models' smaller-displacement V8s at least as standard equipment for the next few years with cubic-inch displacements of 300 (1964–65), 340 (1966–67) and 350 (1968–76). A large-displacement would not reappear in a LeSabre until 1970 when a 455 cubic-inch V8 was introduced as an option and was offered through 1976. Beginning with the downsized 1977 models and continuing through three subsequent generations of front-drive LeSabres introduced in 1986, 1992 and 2000, Buick's 3.8-liter (231 cubic-inch) V6 would become the standard engine for most LeSabre models and V8 engines were dropped (except in station wagons) after the last of the rear-drive LeSabre sedans and coupes came off the line in 1985.
For most years from 1959 to 1971, a three-speed manual transmission was standard equipment on all LeSabres but rarely ordered. Far more popular was the Turbine Drive automatic transmission (previously known as Dynaflow) along with power steering and power brakes. For 1961 and 1962, the automatic transmission was standard on the LeSabre and all other full-sized Buicks but in 1963 was moved back to the option list on LeSabres. For 1964, the Dynaflow-based Turbine Drive was replaced by two new automatic transmissions, the two-speed Super Turbine 300 and the three-speed Super Turbine 400. A four-speed manual transmission was offered as a LeSabre option from 1963 to 1965 but only a small number of cars were so equipped. Automatic transmissions would once again reappear as standard equipment on LeSabres in mid-1971 and continue in such form until the model line's demise after 2005.
LeSabres were rear-drive six-passenger vehicles from 1959 to 1985 (station wagons through 1990) featuring separate body-on-frame construction along with a longitudinally mounted front engine. The first downsized generation of LeSabres introduced in 1977 retained the rear-drive and body-on-frame construction, while the later-generation models introduced in 1986 switched to front-wheel-drive, unit-body construction and transversely mounted engine. Convertibles were offered each year through 1975 while two- and four-door hardtops were dropped after 1976 and only pillared body styles were offered from 1977 to 2005. Station wagons were offered through 1964 and then dropped for several years until being reintroduced in 1970 and continued until 1990 after which year they were moved to the revived Roadmaster series. LeSabres come in two versions: Custom and Limited.

Common 2002 Buick Lesabre problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2002 Buick LeSabre, several common problems have been identified:
- Power Window Issues:
- Owners reported problems with power windows, specifically the power window regulator, leading to sluggish operation or complete failure. This issue was prevalent in the 2000, 2001, and 2002 models, occurring around 75,650 to 80,000 miles. Repair costs ranged between $300 and $400. Owners faced windows falling into doors, unsmooth operation, and windows getting stuck closed, affecting climate control functionality.
- Intake Gasket Leaks:
- Another common problem was intake gasket leaks, where oil or coolant could leak, potentially leading to internal mixing of oil and coolant. This issue could result in engine performance problems and the need for costly repairs.
- Pressure Control Solenoid:
- The pressure control solenoid was identified as a problematic component, causing issues with shifting gears. Repairing this part often required significant labor, as accessing it involved dismantling parts of the suspension and transmission.
- Rear Air Ride Shocks:
- Problems with the rear air ride shocks were reported, leading some owners to convert to coilover shocks due to the expensive and short lifespan of the original air shocks. This conversion could be a costly but potentially more durable solution.
- Front Wheel Bearings:
- Front wheel bearings were prone to issues, manifesting as growling noises while driving, especially when turning. Detecting play in the wheel or vibrations in the coil spring could indicate a problem with the wheel bearings, necessitating replacement to ensure safe and smooth operation.
- Blower Motor:
- The blower motor, located under the glove box, was another area of concern. Owners faced issues with the motor not working, sometimes requiring temporary fixes like tapping it with a hammer. Replacing the blower motor and resistor was often necessary to restore proper functionality.
These common problems with the 2002 Buick LeSabre highlight various issues that owners have faced, ranging from power window malfunctions to mechanical and electrical component failures. Addressing these issues promptly and with quality repairs is crucial to maintaining the performance and safety of the vehicle.

- Date Of Incident: 2016-12-28
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1G4HR54K32U
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH MY VEHICLE'S OIL LEAKING THEN BURNING/SMOKING OFF MY CAR. THIS ISSUE IS ON MY ENGINE'S MANIFOLD & HASN'T BEEN RECALLED EVEN THOUGH THE SAME ENGINE IS RECALLED ON OTHER GM MODELS. THE ENGINE ON MY LESABRE IS THE SAME 3.8 LITER V6 3800 ENGINE THAT WAS RECALLED TWICE BY GM IN THE PAST 6 YEARS. MY ENGINE HAD MINIMAL FIRE IN THE INCIDENTS I EXPERIENCED BUT QUITE A BIT OF SMOKE FROM THE AREA THE OIL LEAKS. ONCE I KILL THE ENGINE THE SMOKE STOPS. GM WANTS TO CHARGE FOR A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK & WOULDN'T RECOGNIZE THE ISSUE ON THE VERY SAME ENGINE, VIEWING IT AS JUST A VEHICLE NOT RECALLED EVEN IF IT HAS THE SAME FAULTY PART. IT CAUSED MY CAR'S CATALYTIC CONVERTER TO FAIL AS IT BURNED THROUGH. A FIX IS COSTLY, SO I WENT TO MY OWN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO SAVE MYSELF MONEY SINCE GM DOES NOT WANT TO TAKE CARE OF ISSUES THAT THEY RECALLED. BELOW ARE THE 2 RECALLS THAT SHOULD APPLY TO MY CAR & ALSO THE PONTIAC BONNEVILLE AS WELL SINCE THEY ARE BOTH BUILT ON THE SAME CHASSIS, PREMISE, & ENGINE AS THE OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE. BOTH LESABRES & BONNEVILLES HAVE THE 3.8 V6 NATURALLY ASPIRATED 3800 ENGINE THAT RUNS IN THE RECALLED INTRIGUE. Buick's best year for overall safety, reliability, comfort, and operating cost. Your car now has 220,000 miles on it and still performs like new!
-
I'm glad to hear that your LeSabre Limited has been performing perfectly and has only required routine maintenance. It's great that you have the extra handling package, which makes the car handle great and maneuver easily in parking lots.
-
Two of my window regulators went bad while still under warranty. Unfortunately, the last one was not covered and cost $750.00 with labor. I have read that many others with a 2002 LeSabre had the same problem with their window regulators. It seems like this should be a hidden warranty and should be recalled, but it wasn't. Although the car is comfortable for my frame at 6'4

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've been in need of a car since 2013, and my mom was kind enough to buy me a used Buick LeSabre from 2002. I've been riding it around and it's been great! 😊

This Buick has great styling, performance, and a smooth ride. However, some customers have reported issues with the 3.8 engine's Intake Manifold gasket. It may be worth checking out NHTSA vehicle bulletins for this model. I understand that this can be a frustrating issue to deal with, as I have experienced a similar problem with my Chevy Lumina's 3.1 V6 engine. It's important to note that the gasket may need to be replaced every 25-30k miles, which can be costly at around $700-900 per replacement. Unfortunately, GM has not taken responsibility for this issue. In my case, I had to replace the gasket twice on my Lumina, and now my Buick is experiencing its first failure at 60k miles. It may be time to consider trading it in, but overall, this is still a great car to drive.

The Buick Lesabre with the Series II 3.8L V-6 engine has proven to be unreliable, with frequent breakdowns and expensive repairs. Despite its comfortable ride, I cannot recommend this car and suggest consulting the Edmunds reliability section before making a purchase. The high cost of repairs far outweighs any positives.

I really enjoyed reading about the experiences shared here. I have owned two Buick Lesabres before my 2002 Limited, a 1993 Custom with 223,000 miles and a 1999 Limited with 200,000 miles at trade-in. Both cars only required standard maintenance and never had a single major repair. I was hoping for the same results with my new Lesabre, but unfortunately, I had to spend thousands upon thousands in repairs. Since I bought the car new, everything was fine while under warranty, but soon after, the nightmare began. The brakes on all four wheels went out around 40,000 miles, which cost about $500. The transmission started hard shifting around 80,000 miles, which cost around $1500. Between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, I had the greatest number of problems, mostly electrical, but some other issues too. The exterior lighting/wiring went bad with turn signals and tail lamps, which was about a $400 fix. Lights started burning out on the climate control buttons, then the radio and steering wheel buttons. Unfortunately, this couldn't be fixed at all short of replacing head units and switches, and it would've been so costly I decided to just forgo it. The brake lines rusted out (and don't ask me how since I live in California), which cost $500 more. I also had leaking fuel injectors, poor performance, and hard starting, which cost $800 more. The blower fan stopped working, which cost $200 more. The dash began to peel around the opening for the window defroster, and the passenger door panel started coming loose. I didn't bother with either of these issues. The gas cap needed replacing because there was a vacuum leak, which cost $90 more. The final straw was at 103,000 miles when the engine had an internal backfire in the intake manifold. The engine essentially imploded, causing the plastic intake plenum to shatter, the heads to leak, and the oil cap to bust off of the filler neck. If I hadn't been on a long trip and stranded in the middle of Wyoming, I'd have bought another car.Instead, I had to spend $3400 on repairs. By the time I reached 133,000 miles, the suspension was weak, the car rattled and shimmied, and it needed more engine work. The AC also needed to be overhauled, and I couldn't take it anymore. Surprisingly, I didn't experience the same problem with window regulators that everyone else mentioned. On another note, this model of Lesabre, while having the same dimensions on paper, seemed smaller on the inside and larger on the outside than my two previous models. It had more trunk space, but less overall interior room, which wasn't a good move in my opinion. Road trips were uncomfortable for backseat passengers, and the front wasn't much better. It also seemed more plastic and cheap overall, and the ride quality wasn't as soft or cushy. The value was great, and the resale value was excellent, but I think the 36,000 mile warranty was skimpy. I left Buick for a number of years, but I came back with a 2011 Lacrosse that now has 131,000 miles and runs like a Swiss watch with no repairs at all. THAT is what I expect from a Buick, and my 2002 Lesabre just didn't deliver. Maybe mine was a lemon?

The alternator has a whistle that can be quite bothersome. Additionally, the brake tends to make a clicking sound when used, and the back of the seats have some play in them. Unfortunately, the dealerships have been unable to correct these issues. Furthermore, the original tires had some defects and had to be upgraded at an additional cost to the customer. As a result, this car falls short of its 8.9 rating.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Buick. I purchased it used in 2006 with only 22,000 kms on it and overall, I've been satisfied with its performance. However, I did run into some trouble with the window regulators in the last two years. The two rear windows needed repairs at $450 each, even though they were hardly used and couldn't have worn out. This year, the front passenger window malfunctioned and cost over $450 to fix, with the part alone costing $278. While I was disappointed that Buick claimed to have had no complaints, I still appreciate my car. I just wish they had reimbursed part of the repair. Thanks for listening, and have a great day!

Hey there! I noticed that the car has had some oil leaks, brake problems, and steering issues. Let's get those taken care of!
