The Buick LaCrosse is a four-door, front-wheel-drive sedan manufactured by Buick since model year 2005, and marketed variously across four generations for the North American and Chinese markets.

The first-generation LaCrosse replaced the Century and Regal in North America beginning for model year 2005 as a five- or six-passenger, four-door, front-wheel-drive, V6-powered sedan using GM's mid-size W platform—and marketed in Canada as the Buick Allure. Notably, the first generation was also offered with a V8 engine, as a high-performance sub-model marketed as the LaCrosse Super (2008–2009). LaCrosse production and marketing began for China with model year 2006.

The second-generation LaCrosse was introduced for 2010 as a larger premium sedan for North American and Chinese markets using a long-wheelbase (LWB) variant of the Epsilon II platform shared with the Cadillac XTS—and available solely as a five-passenger sedan with a range of four- and six-cylinder engines.

The third generation was introduced for North America and China for model year 2017 using the GM Epsilon platform shared with the Chevrolet Impala, notably offering a mild hybrid powertrain combining 20-kilowatt (27 hp) electric and 2.5-liter Ecotec gasoline engine. North American production ended with the third generation, with model year 2019; however, it continued to be offered in China, with a 2019 facelift.

The fourth-generation LaCrosse, launched in 2023, is currently manufactured and marketed solely in China. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-20
  • VIN: 2G4WD582X61
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: In spite of multiple wheel alignments, where all of the wheels are in alignment with each other, this car still pulls sharply to the right. It is noted amongst internet discussion groups that General Motors/Buick has a common problem with a steering sensor/computer interface that causes this steering problem. I have contacted dealerships, along with Buick's California "response team" with no solution. Everybody I've spoken to so far appears to be clueless about this problem which I suspect is not a truthful response from them. The pulling has been going on for approximately 10 years, but my father (the original owner of this car) was already elderly at the time and had difficulty talking with people on the phone because of hearing loss. He let this fester. This is a serious issue because of the consistent pulling that could lead to lane drifting and cause an accident.

I'M ALSO EXPERIENCING MY ENTIRE DASH GOES OUT WHILE DRIVING FOR 2-SECONDS THEN COMES BACK ON, I'M NOT SURE IF THE WIRING THAT'S SHORTING OUT FROM MY LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS AFTER BURNING IS CAUSING THIS ISSUE OR NOT SINCE THE WIRES BEGINS TO TOUCH AFTER THE WIRE COVERING IS BURNED. I CONTACTED BUICK THE MANUFACTURE, AND THEY ARE GIVING ME THE RUN AROUND ASKING ME QUESTIONS THAT DOESN'T EVEN PERTAIN TO THE ISSUES AT HAND, LIKE WHEN WAS YOUR LAST OIL CHANGE? THIS SHOULD BECOME A RECALL ISSUE IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE.

2006 Buick Lacrosse recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2006 Buick Lacrosse.

2015-08-14
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
  • Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.
2014-06-23
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
2009-02-17
  • Manufacturer: DORMAN PRODUCTS, INC.
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: DORMAN IS RECALLING 979 STEERING KNUCKLES, DORMAN P/NOS. 697-902 AND 697-903, SOLD UNDER DORMAN'S "OE SOLUTIONSTM" BRAND NAME, AND NAPA P/NOS. 7-8502 AND 7-8503 WHICH WERE SOLD FOR REPLACEMENT USE ON THE VARIOUS VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. A POTENTIAL MATERIAL OR DESIGN DEFECT COULD RESULT IN THE STEERING KNUCKLE BREAKING IN THE HUB AREA.
  • Consequence: A BROKEN STEERING KNUCKLE COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A POSSIBLE CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
  • Remedy: DORMAN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE STEERING KNUCKLES FREE OF CHARGE AND REIMBURSE THE REPAIR FACILITY OR OWNER FOR LABOR. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 23, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DORMAN'S TOLL-FREE HOTLINE AT 1-800-523-2492 AND PRESS 5.
2006-10-31
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY BUILT WITH CLOTH SEATS THAT WERE EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC AIR BAG PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM AND LATER REUPHOLSTERED WITH AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVER KITS ARE INVOLVED. TESTING HAS INDICATED THAT THE AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVERS CAN CAUSE THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM TO MALFUNCTION.
  • Consequence: IF THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS, THE FRONT AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE MAY BE DISABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE ENABLED, OR ENABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE DISABLED. IN EITHER CASE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT REQUIRES AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A FRONT PASSENGER'S LEVEL OF INJURY MAY BE INCREASED.
  • Remedy: BECAUSE A REPLACEMENT LEATHER SEAT COVER THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM IS NOT AVAILABLE, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) WILL REPURCHASE THESE VEHICLES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS STATED IN GM'S LETTER TO OWNERS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2006. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT GM AT 1-877-477-1022 TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF REPURCHASING THEIR VEHICLE.

The car steers like a truck and moves from side to side, which can be a bit uncomfortable. However, it does float along the highway at posted speeds and has a decent gas mileage of about 26.5. It's a bit inconvenient to have to take out the coolant bottle to check the power steering fluid, but it's manageable. There is a raspy noise and some rubbing coming from the steering section when backing up, which can be felt on the steering wheel. Unfortunately, the seat back still needs to be manually adjusted. Overall, I was not completely satisfied with the car for the price I paid. I hope GM can improve their cars in the future.

Although my Buick Lacrosse has had some mechanical issues, I am confident in my decision to have it repaired. I have had some defective parts replaced under warranty, and now I need to replace the seals in the rack and pinion steering at a cost of $900.00. Despite these issues, I still believe in the quality of Buick cars. In the past, I drove a Ford Taurus for 175,000 miles, but I am still satisfied with my Buick. While I have had some issues with water sloshing in the engine, I am confident that this can be resolved. Overall, I am a satisfied customer who believes in the quality of Buick cars.

The car has some drawbacks, such as poor handling and build quality, and the transmission may need to be replaced after 100K miles. However, it does have some positive features, such as comfortable seating and a quiet ride on the highway. Additionally, it gets decent gas mileage at around 22 mpg with mostly city driving. While it may not have a leather-wrapped steering wheel, it does come equipped with a sunroof and backup sensors. I also considered a 2002 Honda Accord V6, but ultimately chose this car. Although I have had some issues with it, I still appreciate its positive qualities. Overall, I prefer to avoid GM cars in the future, but this one has served me well enough.

In 2006, I decided to trade in my 2000 Buick Century, which I had bought brand new, for a 2006 Buick LaCrosse. Although the LaCrosse had 14,000 miles on it and cost an additional $18,000, I was hopeful that I would enjoy it. Unfortunately, I quickly realized that it wasn't the right fit for me and I regretted my decision. As a result, I have decided not to purchase another Buick. It seems that GM has prioritized profits over quality, leaving consumers with subpar products. Additionally, the LaCrosse is smaller than the Century and uses more gas.

The car is experiencing poor mileage, a strange sound from the engine, and strong sulphur smells. These issues require immediate attention and I am confident in my assessment.

I am getting 29.5 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city, which is great! Although Consumer Reports says the overall mpg is 17, I am still happy with my car's performance. While Japanese cars are rated higher, I still think my GM car is a great choice. The engine is actually much quieter than many cars, including Japanese ones, so I am surprised that Consumer Reports says it is coarse. I love how beautifully the car handles and how fun it is to drive. The only downsides are that the back seat could use a bit more headroom and the trunk lid needs a handle. Overall, I think this car is excellent. I have owned three Buick Lasabres and they all got 30mpg or better on the highway. In fact, I once drove from Mcintosh, FL to Franklin, NC, a distance of 540 miles, on just one tank of gas! Additionally, the fit of the doors, trunk lid, and hood is excellent, making this heavy car safer than many Japanese cars in a crash.

I'm so glad to hear that you're completely satisfied with your Buick LaCrosse! It's definitely an excellent value for anyone in the market for a sedan.

I'm so happy with my LaCrosse! It's the perfect car for me. Plus, with the remote start, I can warm it up on those cold Oregon mornings or cool it down on hot days. It's already been a lifesaver!

  4. Destin Kreiger 2024-10-21

I love driving this car! On the freeway, it's like I'm being chauffered, but on turns and winding roads, it handles like a sports car. There are so many bells and whistles attached, that I spent my first weekend just reading and reviewing the manuals and CD's that came with it. I've always liked Buick vehicles, but until the LeCrosse came out, I thought I'd have to dye my hair silver-blue and move to Sun City Center because that's where all the LeSabre drivers were!

This car is perfect for the times. It's not too large, but it has plenty of room and is great on gas.
