Buick Century problems

Buick Century is the model name that was used by Buick for a line of upscale full-size cars from 1936 to 1942 and 1954 to 1958, as well as from 1973 to 2005 for mid-size cars.

The first Buick Century debuted as the Series 60 then renamed in 1936 as a shorter and lighter model featuring the same engine as the bigger Roadmaster and Limited series giving it more performance while using the shorter wheelbase body of the Buick Special. During the 1930s and 1940s it was Buick's companion to the top level Roadmaster and was offered as a 2-door and 4-door sedan and convertible. The Century name was used on six generations of cars of varying sizes as well as performance and trim levels. In 1969, Buick developed a concept car known as the Century Cruiser. In the 1970s, the Century Regal became a separate model and market positioning between the two products changed from year to year depending on sales. The Century was updated to front wheel drive in 1982 and was Buick's 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and station wagon, with regular updates and feature upgrades as customer preferences changed over time.

Series 60 (1930–1935)

Originally, the Series 60 had the 331.4 cu in (5.4 L) OHV Buick Straight-6 engine from the Series 70, developing 99 bhp (74 kW) at 2,800 rpm. It had, at the beginning of the generation, a full-length running board denoting the top model for Buick at the time, shared with the short wheelbase, entry level Series 40. In 1930, GM built 38,180 cars. The bodystyles available were torpedo, sedan, coupe, and roadster convertible, using GM's "B-body" platform. Starting with this generation, all GM cars shared a corporate appearance as a result of the "Art and Colour Section" headed by Harley J. Earl and modest yearly changes were introduced to freshen the appearance.

In 1931, the running board was reduced and the OHV 220.7 cu in (3.6 L) Buick Straight-8 engine was introduced that developed 90 bhp (67 kW). Aesthetically, the Series 60 remained almost unchanged, and the same fact occurred also in the following year. In 1931 and 1932, a total of 55,135 were produced.

In 1933, the length of the body increased and the radiator was now concealed behind a façade with a grille. The engine power increased to 97 hp (72 kW), and 1933 was the first year all GM vehicles were installed with optional vent windows which were initially called “No Draft Individually Controlled Ventilation” later renamed "Ventiplanes". In 1934, the appearance was changed to a more rounded appearance, with a new OHV 278 cu in (4.6 L) eight-cylinder engine and 100 hp. In 1935, the model remained almost unchanged while the body style selections were similar to larger Buicks but more affordably priced. Six choices were available to include both 2- and 4-door convertibles using the term "phaeton" for the 4-door convertible with a listed price of US$1,675 ($37,224 in 2023 dollars ). Total production from 1933 to 1935 was 31,385. In 1936, the model changed its name to "Century".

Common Buick Century problems

The Buick Century, a popular midsize car produced by General Motors, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. The most frequently reported issues are engine problems, transmission slipping, intake manifold gasket leaks, and power window failures.

  • Engine Problems: The Buick Century has been reported to have engine problems, with the worst model year being 2000. The most common issue is transmission slipping, which affects 2000 model year vehicles and has an average cost to fix of $2,100 with an average mileage of 78,000 miles.
  • Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks: The 2003 Buick Century has been reported to have intake manifold gasket leaks, with an average cost to fix of $900 and an average mileage of 90,000 miles.
  • Power Window Failure: The 2001 Buick Century has been reported to have power window problems, with the most common issue being the power window stopping to work. This issue affects 2001 model year vehicles and has an average cost to fix of $200 with an average mileage of 80,000 miles.
  • Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid Failure: This is another common issue reported by Buick Century owners, which affects the transmission system. This problem is caused by the failure of the transmission pressure control solenoid, which can result in a hard time shifting gears or even total transmission failure.
  • Leaking Coolant: This issue is caused by the intake manifold gasket failure, which can lead to engine overheating and even engine failure. This problem is more common in the 2000-2003 model years, with an average cost to fix of $900.

It is important to note that these issues are based on complaints from owners and may not represent the overall reliability of the Buick Century. However, these common problems can help potential buyers make informed decisions about purchasing and maintaining a Buick Century.

  • Date Complaint: 2023-10-03
  • VIN: 2G4WS52J621
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: UNKNOWN; The issues started around 6 months ago. Just casually driving like usual, and my steering wheel would lock up and be ridiculously hard to turn, which is scary because its happened while turning through lights and intersections and trying to even just park my car. And on some of those occations the trac and abs sensors would come on, but not all the time.

  • Date Complaint: 2023-08-06
  • VIN: 2G4WS52J031
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: My vehicle was receiving a PA state required annual mechanical safety inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I was informed that the "sway bar" which stabilizes the steering system had failed, and as a critical part of the steering operation, the vehicle could not pass a PA state mechanical safety inspection. I had the "sway bar" replaced with the GM re-designed part at considerable expense to pass the PA state safety inspection. The ASE certified mechanic advised me that he had replaced many mechanical failures like mine (broken lug ends) before GM changed the design to one that could withstand the application (a solid forging as opposed to a sheet metal fabrication). I wrote to the CEO of Buick/GM (see attached letter) to request an explanation as to why a known safety defect like the "sway bar" was not recalled when it was first discovered, resulting in a re-design of the "sway bar" for subsequent production models. I received a telephone response from the GM Executive Team, who called himself "Debbie", at 1.855.880.1500, extension 5917674, Reference Number [XXX], on 26 July 2023. "Debbie" refused to document GM's position on this issue in writing, and only emphasized that a safety recall with this known safety issue was never issued. It appears that GM has deceived the NTHSA and gotten away with a cover-up. Regardless of the time that GM has kept this hidden from the NHTSA, GM should be required to recall all affected vehicles and repair them at their expense. Thank you. • VIN: 2G4WY55J321
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Right front Cooper GS5 Grand Touring 205/70 R15 96T with only 862 miles on it had a complete air loss/went completely flat when car was turning into a parking lot. This is one of a set of brand new tires on the car. The car was never driven on a highway after these were purchased. Only local driving at 45 to 50 MPH max. Tire was taken to a tire shop in hopes of getting it plugged/repaired. They found nothing had penetrated the tire. They could not pressurize the tire. Air was blowing out all around the outside bead and could not be seated. They put lubricant around the bead inside and out and gave it some rapid shots of air on the machine. It started to hold pressure but immediately had a roughly 4 inch section of the sidewall start to balloon out. Technician said he was afraid it was going to blow up in his face. He chalk marked the defective area on the tire and said the bead and sidewall had failed in that ballooning area and the tire was defective and not repairable.

Hey there! I recently purchased a vehicle at an auction for $2500. It looked like a great deal with only one owner, 75K miles for a 1996 model, and in good condition. However, after driving it 2-3 times a week for 5 months, I've had to make some repairs that have left me feeling a bit down. I've had to replace the tire, oil pan/intake gaskets, rear shocks, headliner, accelerator/throttle adjustment, realign the driver's door so it closes properly, replace a cracked/peeling hubcap, and fix some electrical problems with the passenger windows and brake pads. All in all, the repairs cost me $1065, which added to the purchase price of $2500, brings the total to $3565. Unfortunately, according to Edmunds appraisal, the car is only worth $1700, so I'm at a loss of $1865. Live and learn, right?

When I first bought this car, I was excited because it was a Buick, but unfortunately, I've had a few issues. Every time I get out of the car, I get a static shock, which can be quite uncomfortable. I've found that touching my keys to the door frame helps to avoid this. My wife has also experienced this and now prefers to take her own car on trips. Additionally, getting out of the car can be a bit of a challenge because the seats are quite low to the ground. Lastly, I must admit that the car's silver exterior and gray interior can be a bit dull. It feels like I'm in a black and white movie. However, overall, I still enjoy driving my Buick.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're sorry to hear that your 1995 Buick Century hasn't met your expectations. We understand that the engine noise and wind noise on the highway have been a disappointment, and that the radiator had to be replaced at 100,000 miles. We also understand that parking has been difficult due to limited visibility of the front fenders and that the turning radius is poor. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration. We hope to have the opportunity to serve you better in the future. Thank you for choosing Buick!

I really like the car's appearance and its great gas mileage. It rides well for a mid-size car and has many convenient extras. However, there are some blind spots that make it difficult to see when changing lanes. The car may lack power, but it is still sufficient for anyone who is not racing. It's important to note that some people have reported transmission troubles around 65000 miles, so it's something to keep in mind. If you do need a new transmission, it can be expensive, costing between $1500-$2500. Despite this, the car can still be a dependable choice.

The vehicle has been really reliable. It starts up with no problems and never stalls. It rides comfortably even on rough roads. The ABS works really well in inclement weather, which is a huge plus. The automatic lights at night are super convenient, and the daytime running lights are a great safety feature. The instrumentation is also really convenient. Plus, the trunk is really roomy and even has a net to hold small items!

Hey there! I just wanted to share with you my experience with my first car. It's been such a great ride so far! I bought it during my sophomore year of high school for only $600 and since then, I've only had to replace a few things like the tires, starter, and water pump. I did have to do one major repair that cost over $100, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. The car has a 3.3 V6 automatic engine that has some great pick-up and the air conditioning still works beautifully. I'm currently doing a mileage test, but I usually only have to fill up every 2-3 weeks depending on how much I drive around. Overall, I think it's a really well-built car and it's been the perfect first ride for me!

This was my first car and it holds a special place in my heart. I was lucky enough to inherit it from my grandfather in 1998 when it only had 26K miles on it. I've taken it on countless adventures, from driving it from North Carolina to Los Angeles, to navigating the busy streets of L.A. for years, to road tripping to Denver, San Francisco, and even Arizona where we lived in the mountains for three years. Despite being 12 years old and having 136K miles on it, it still runs beautifully, with only a few minor cosmetic issues. I recently took it on a cross country trip and it performed flawlessly. This car has never let me down and has always started on the first try (except for one time when I needed to replace the fuel pump). Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and trustworthy vehicle.

This car may not be the newest model, but it is a reliable and affordable option. Despite being 18 years old, it still looks decent. It has been very dependable since we received it from my grandpa, who had to do some transmission work and replace the intake manifold gaskets. However, I believe that after that, it will run forever, although some rubber hoses may become brittle and break due to its age. Nevertheless, it should still get you where you need to go without much trouble. It is an easy car to maintain since parts are not expensive. Although the driving experience may not be the most exciting, it is adequate for getting around. It has a lot of body roll and doesn't feel particularly secure doing fast turns, but the steering is decently responsive. The acceleration is adequate, which means it won't wow you, but it should be enough to get up to speed on the highway. Parking can be a little tricky due to the rounded edges, but the plentiful windows and large mirrors make visibility good. The build quality of the car is not the best, as it has some wear and tear, such as missing radio knobs, broken cupholders, and disintegrating foam. However, if your main focus is reliability and a car that just drives you around, this car is a good choice. The only significant build quality issue is rust.Living in the south, rust may not be an issue, but in the north, the bottom of a door may begin to rust after 3 years. Although it is uncertain whether critical components like rocker panels are affected, I have noticed a few Centuries with rusted out rocker panels. The interior is roomy, but it is missing features like rear cupholders. It is neat how the center console folds up for a 6th seat and has a lot of door storage. However, there are no rear vents or fold-down seats. The climate control is basic but easy to use, with dual-zone control. One thing to watch out for is that these old cars probably don't have a working heater, and the A/C might not work well. My heater didn't work for a long time, and the A/C, which has been recharged, is ice-cold only when the car is moving. The technology is not great because it doesn't have a CD player. Comfort is good, and the seats are not uncomfortable but not the most supportive or contoured. The soft suspension is awesome on our pothole roads though. Basically, if you are looking for a reliable, roomy car that gets decent gas mileage, and you don't care about bad interior build quality, and you are looking for one that doesn't have any complicated electronics to break, this car is a good option! Just check for rust, and when you get the car, maybe do some preventative stuff like washing your car during the winter/getting an undercoating. I don't have any long winter experience with this southern car, so I can't give a first-hand experience. I have just seen a few rusty ones. Update: one of the back windows stopped working. Window regulators are a known weak point on this car, I believe.

It's great to hear that you owned your Buick for nearly 7 years and that it was mechanically and functionally perfect. It's understandable that living in New England can cause some issues with the exterior, such as rusting out the rocker panels under the doors and the underbody, like the brake lines. Despite these challenges, the Buick Century is a solid buy and a popular choice for getting from point A to point B. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I love my car! I received it as a gift 2 years ago when I was a full-time student. Despite its appearance, it has been a reliable companion, never letting me down even once in its 174,000 miles of service. It's a testament to the quality of GM cars, which are often unfairly criticized. The engine is a true workhorse that keeps going and going. Sure, it has some rust spots and faded beige paint, but that only adds to its character. While it may not be as fuel-efficient as it was when it was new, it still gets the job done. The only downside is the poor turn radius, which can make parking a bit of a challenge. If it weren't for the rust, I'm sure I could get another 100,000 miles out of this car. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Buick, even if some people think it's an old man's car.
