Buick Century problems
Buick Century is the model name that was used by Buick for a line of upscale full-size cars from 1936 to 1942 and 1954 to 1958, as well as from 1973 to 2005 for mid-size cars.
The first Buick Century debuted as the Series 60 then renamed in 1936 as a shorter and lighter model featuring the same engine as the bigger Roadmaster and Limited series giving it more performance while using the shorter wheelbase body of the Buick Special. During the 1930s and 1940s it was Buick's companion to the top level Roadmaster and was offered as a 2-door and 4-door sedan and convertible. The Century name was used on six generations of cars of varying sizes as well as performance and trim levels. In 1969, Buick developed a concept car known as the Century Cruiser. In the 1970s, the Century Regal became a separate model and market positioning between the two products changed from year to year depending on sales. The Century was updated to front wheel drive in 1982 and was Buick's 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and station wagon, with regular updates and feature upgrades as customer preferences changed over time.
Series 60 (1930–1935)
Originally, the Series 60 had the 331.4 cu in (5.4 L) OHV Buick Straight-6 engine from the Series 70, developing 99 bhp (74 kW) at 2,800 rpm. It had, at the beginning of the generation, a full-length running board denoting the top model for Buick at the time, shared with the short wheelbase, entry level Series 40. In 1930, GM built 38,180 cars. The bodystyles available were torpedo, sedan, coupe, and roadster convertible, using GM's "B-body" platform. Starting with this generation, all GM cars shared a corporate appearance as a result of the "Art and Colour Section" headed by Harley J. Earl and modest yearly changes were introduced to freshen the appearance.
In 1931, the running board was reduced and the OHV 220.7 cu in (3.6 L) Buick Straight-8 engine was introduced that developed 90 bhp (67 kW). Aesthetically, the Series 60 remained almost unchanged, and the same fact occurred also in the following year. In 1931 and 1932, a total of 55,135 were produced.
In 1933, the length of the body increased and the radiator was now concealed behind a façade with a grille. The engine power increased to 97 hp (72 kW), and 1933 was the first year all GM vehicles were installed with optional vent windows which were initially called “No Draft Individually Controlled Ventilation” later renamed "Ventiplanes". In 1934, the appearance was changed to a more rounded appearance, with a new OHV 278 cu in (4.6 L) eight-cylinder engine and 100 hp. In 1935, the model remained almost unchanged while the body style selections were similar to larger Buicks but more affordably priced. Six choices were available to include both 2- and 4-door convertibles using the term "phaeton" for the 4-door convertible with a listed price of US$1,675 ($37,224 in 2023 dollars ). Total production from 1933 to 1935 was 31,385. In 1936, the model changed its name to "Century".

- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: UNKNOWN; The issues started around 6 months ago. Just casually driving like usual, and my steering wheel would lock up and be ridiculously hard to turn, which is scary because its happened while turning through lights and intersections and trying to even just park my car. And on some of those occations the trac and abs sensors would come on, but not all the time.

- VIN: 2G4WS52J031
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: My vehicle was receiving a PA state required annual mechanical safety inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I was informed that the "sway bar" which stabilizes the steering system had failed, and as a critical part of the steering operation, the vehicle could not pass a PA state mechanical safety inspection. I had the "sway bar" replaced with the GM re-designed part at considerable expense to pass the PA state safety inspection. The ASE certified mechanic advised me that he had replaced many mechanical failures like mine (broken lug ends) before GM changed the design to one that could withstand the application (a solid forging as opposed to a sheet metal fabrication). I wrote to the CEO of Buick/GM (see attached letter) to request an explanation as to why a known safety defect like the "sway bar" was not recalled when it was first discovered, resulting in a re-design of the "sway bar" for subsequent production models. I received a telephone response from the GM Executive Team, who called himself "Debbie", at 1.855.880.1500, extension 5917674, Reference Number [XXX], on 26 July 2023. "Debbie" refused to document GM's position on this issue in writing, and only emphasized that a safety recall with this known safety issue was never issued. It appears that GM has deceived the NTHSA and gotten away with a cover-up. Regardless of the time that GM has kept this hidden from the NHTSA, GM should be required to recall all affected vehicles and repair them at their expense. Thank you. - Summary: Right front Cooper GS5 Grand Touring 205/70 R15 96T with only 862 miles on it had a complete air loss/went completely flat when car was turning into a parking lot. This is one of a set of brand new tires on the car. The car was never driven on a highway after these were purchased. Only local driving at 45 to 50 MPH max. Tire was taken to a tire shop in hopes of getting it plugged/repaired. They found nothing had penetrated the tire. They could not pressurize the tire. Air was blowing out all around the outside bead and could not be seated. They put lubricant around the bead inside and out and gave it some rapid shots of air on the machine. It started to hold pressure but immediately had a roughly 4 inch section of the sidewall start to balloon out. Technician said he was afraid it was going to blow up in his face. He chalk marked the defective area on the tire and said the bead and sidewall had failed in that ballooning area and the tire was defective and not repairable.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Buick. I absolutely loved it! It was so reliable and trouble-free. I bought it brand new in '98 and only sold it in Oct. '03 because my wife wanted a different car. The ride was smooth and quiet, and it had great acceleration. The only minor issue I had was with the heater fan switch, which didn't work in the first position, but it was an easy fix for $100. The only thing I would suggest is a slightly firmer suspension to improve the handling. Thanks for listening!

When I turned 16, my uncle gave me this car for free, even though he didn't think it would last more than a couple of months. Last week, I had to say goodbye to the Buick and switch to a four-wheel drive, but I was sad to let it go. I only had to replace the starter and sending unit, and it ran perfectly for over 200000 miles on the original engine and transmission. I sold it to a lucky kid for 300 bucks, which was a great deal for them, but I needed the money. I probably should have changed the shocks, considering my uncle used it to haul wood. Overall, I highly recommend it as a great

When we purchased this car, I had some reservations about its performance and fuel efficiency. However, I was pleasantly surprised by its excellent performance. We have driven 34k miles since purchasing it with 65k miles on it, and it has been a wonderful experience. It gives an impressive 20mpg in the city and an amazing 29mpg on the highway! Knowing what I know now, I would have happily paid more for it. I am hopeful that the new Buicks will be just as reliable and comfortable to drive!

You've made a great purchase with this car! Although I've had a few issues, such as a failed front pass. side wheel bearing that cost around $500 to fix, overall it has been a reliable vehicle for the price of around 7 grand. The gas mileage is decent, averaging about 25 on the highway and 13 around town. However, since my commute is only 2 miles, the gas mileage suffers a bit. But, I can't complain too much since the car isn't even warmed up by the time I arrive at work.

I'm so glad I bought this car! Despite the fact that it had 77,000 miles on it and cost only $300, it has exceeded my expectations. Although the exterior is a bit rough and the tires need replacing, the car runs smoothly and is quite comfortable. As expected, the cupholders and seatbelts are a bit annoying, but overall it has been a great car. I never would have considered a Buick, but it was the perfect temporary car for me. While it may not be a Cadillac, it certainly gets the job done. The only downside is the turning radius, which could be improved.

Your grandmother owned this car since new and kept it flawless and super clean. Although it had an electrical failure at first and all the gauges conked out, it was great after that. In December 2003, she was involved in an accident where she passed out and crashed through a red light, but thankfully she survived. The car was totaled, but it was not in as bad shape as I thought it would be.

This vehicle required frequent repairs during our ownership, costing us $2,400. Despite having only 76,577 miles when purchased, we had to replace the starter, alternator, radiator, and more. These issues were addressed promptly and effectively, ensuring the vehicle was always in top condition.
