1992 Plymouth Laser problems

plymouth logo

The Plymouth Laser is a two-door 2+2 sports coupe sold by Plymouth from 1989 until 1994. The Laser and its siblings, the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon, were the first vehicles produced under the newly formed Diamond-Star Motors, a joint-venture between the Chrysler Corporation and the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.

Overview

Introduced as "the first Plymouth of the '90s" in advertising, the Plymouth Laser debuted in January 1989 as a 1990 model. The company produced a Chrysler Laser model from 1984 to 1986. The 2-door hatchback was based on the Dodge Daytona model prior to the name badge moving, to the Plymouth brand. Commercials for the 1990 Laser featured R&B singer Tina Turner who appeared in a series of 1990 promotional ads for Plymouth. With three available engines, two transmission offerings, and sporty "aero" styling, the Laser was the most performance-oriented Plymouth since the Barracuda, Duster, and Road Runner muscle cars of the 1970s.

Despite its close resemblance to its Mitsubishi and Eagle siblings, it has several unique styling cues intended to set it apart from the other two. Apart from badging, Lasers sport a race-inspired look, with a plastic panel in the place of a grille, a full rear light-bar, a bulge on the hood for 2.0 L engine models (not necessarily turbocharged), and available stylish "lace" patterned alloy wheels. Rallye Sport (RS), models are set apart from the base models by their black roof with body-colored targa band, power steering, lower bodyside accent striping, and dual power mirrors, as well as an array of options not available on base Lasers.

Base model Lasers carry a 92 hp (69 kW) 1.8 L four-cylinder engine, whereas a 135 hp (101 kW), 2.0 L 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder was optional with the Laser RS. The top-of-the-line RS Turbo came equipped with a 2.0 L DOHC 16-valve turbocharged 4-cylinder engine rated at 195 hp (145 kW). A 5-speed manual transmission was standard. A 4-speed automatic was optional, except with the turbocharged engine, which could only be ordered with the manual transmission until 1991 models debuted.

Common 1992 Plymouth Laser problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 1992 Plymouth Laser, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Hard Restart When Warm: Owners have reported difficulty restarting the car when it is warmed up, requiring a bit of throttle to fire up. This issue could be related to various factors such as fuel delivery problems, ignition system issues, or engine sensors malfunctioning. It is crucial to diagnose the specific cause to address this issue effectively.
  2. Fuel Odor Under the Hood: Another common complaint is a strong fuel odor under the hood when the car is running, especially after shutting it down when hot. This issue could indicate a fuel leak, vapor lock, or problems with the fuel system components. Identifying the source of the fuel odor is essential to prevent safety hazards and maintain the car's performance.
  3. Turbocharger Maintenance: Owners of turbocharged models like the RS version have highlighted the need for extra care and maintenance due to the complexity of turbocharged engines. Turbocharged engines require more attention and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Neglecting turbocharger maintenance can lead to performance issues and potential damage.
  4. Inactivity-Related Problems: Cars that are not driven frequently can develop issues due to inactivity, such as condensation buildup in systems and fluids. This can lead to various problems like corrosion, fluid contamination, and component wear. Regularly driving the car and performing maintenance tasks like fluid changes can help mitigate these issues.
  5. Warranty Coverage: Some owners have expressed concerns about warranty coverage for repairs, especially with low mileage cars like the 1992 Plymouth Laser RS. Understanding the warranty terms and limitations is crucial to avoid unexpected expenses for repairs and maintenance. Out-of-warranty repairs can be costly, so owners should be aware of their coverage.

By addressing these common problems proactively and conducting regular maintenance, owners of the 1992 Plymouth Laser can ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles. Regular inspections, timely repairs, and adherence to maintenance schedules are essential to keep the car in optimal condition and prevent potential issues from escalating.

  • Summary: I RECEIVED A MANUFACTURES RECALL NOTICE ABOUT A YEAR AGO ON THE TRANSFER CASE OF MY VEHICLE. THE NOTICE STATED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH MY TRANSFER CASE WHICH WOULD CAUSE THE WHEELS TO LOCK UP. UPON ACCEPTANCE OF THIS FORM I TOOK MY CAR TO THE NEAREST DEALER. THEY CHECKED IT OUT AND TOLD ME THAT EVERYTHING SEEMED O.K. WITH IT. NOW A YEAR AND 22,000 MILES LATER, ON 8/22/99 I WAS HEADED NORTH BOUND ON THE PA TURNPIKE AT APPROXIMATELY 2145 HOURS. THE CAR WAS RUNNING FINE WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN MY WHEELS LOCKED UP AND SENT ME INTO A SPIN. WHEN I CAME TO A STOP THE CAR WAS RUNNING, BUT INMOBILE. SOMEHOW I MANAGED NOT TO HIT ANYONE OR ANYTHING. HOWEVER I WAS STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TURNPIKE. AFTER ROCKING THE CAR BACK AND FORTH SEVERAL TIMES I WAS ABLE TO FREE UP THE WHEELS ENOUGH TO GET THE CAR OFF OF THE HIGHWAY. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY TOLLED ME THAT IT WAS MY TRANSFER CASE WHICH HAD FORZEN MY WHEELS MAKING THE CAR IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE. SEVERAL CALLS WERE MADE TO THE CHRYSLER CORP. CONCERNING THIS MATTER AND THE RECALL, BUT CHRYSLER NEVER RETURNED THEIR CALLS, AND NOW I'M STUCK WITH A 1200 REPAIR BILL, A TOWING BILL, AND A DAY OFF OF WORK. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE, THIS HAPPENED AT THE RIGHT TIME IN THE RIGHT PLACE, I GUESS. I COULD HAVE SERIOUSLY INJURIED MYSELF, OR SOMEONE ELSE AND TOTALED MY CAR. SOMETHING THIS SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS SHOULD BE COVERED BY THE CHRYSLER CORP.

Negative 1992 Plymouth Laser car reviews

  1. Korbin Borer 2024-08-04

The vehicle frequently experiences breakdowns, requiring frequent repairs which can be quite inconvenient.

  2. Dino Simonis 2024-08-02

Your car has a decent performance and looks nice, but unfortunately, it has not been very reliable and has required multiple repairs, including the timing belt breaking three times.

Positive 1992 Plymouth Laser car reviews

  1. Payton Nienow 2024-11-16

I bought a car in Electric Blue Metallic with dealer installed ground-effects, alloy rims and dark tinting. It looked sleek and sexy and was a very good performer. During a 7 month tour I took right after purchasing it, I got it up to about 130 in the Utah desert. Although I rated its performance an 8 due to the 135 hp engine, it was still agile and glued to the road. Unfortunately, it had one fatal problem...the TIMING Belt broke 3 times. The first time I was idling so I just replaced it and drove away, the second time I put in a new engine, and the 3rd time I gave it to my gear-head brother. Except for the timing belt, it was a great car.

  2. Kaleb Blanda 2024-11-10

I can see that you had a '92 Talon TSi and you love this little Laser about as much. It's great to hear that it sits, rides, and handles like a little race car.

  3. Alvis Heller 2024-09-20

Great little sporty car! It has great mileage.

  4. Hillard Welch 2024-09-12

I'd like to rate these cars and share my experience with them. I have both an Eagle Talon TSi and a Laser RS, and I absolutely love driving them. These cars are incredibly fun to drive and can be tuned to compete with any other car. Although my Talon is still a work in progress, I've already installed a sound system in my Laser and upgraded the air box with a K&N air filter. With a simple tune-up and some modifications, you can get a lot more out of these cars. Overall, I highly recommend them!

  5. Willis Mann 2024-07-12

It sounds like you had a great experience with the car! The smooth ride and overall performance must have made for a really enjoyable drive.
