The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants.
The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.
BMW Z1 (E30 based; 1989–1991)
The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster developed by BMW and was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. It was based on the E30 3 Series platform. The Z1 featured unusual doors which, instead of opening outward or upward, dropped into the door sills and had body panels which could easily be removed and replaced; the car could be driven with all its body panels removed for weight reduction and increased performance. Only 8,000 examples of the Z1 were produced.

Common 2015 Bmw Z4 problems
The BMW Z4, a luxury compact car, is known for its reliability, but like any vehicle, it can experience issues due to worn or failed parts. Here are some common problems reported by owners of the BMW Z4, specifically the 2003-2008 and 2008 redesign models.
- Coolant Loss: Owners of 2003-2005 and 2008 Z4 models have reported engine overheating due to an engine coolant leak from the expansion tank. This problem can lead to severe engine damage if left unaddressed. Replacing the affected parts, including the upper and lower hoses, can cost around $700.
- Defective Roof Mechanism: Many owners of the 2008 Z4 redesign have complained about a defective roof mechanism. The roof motor can develop rust due to the roof retracting into a separate chamber, causing the mechanism to fail. Replacing the roof mechanism multiple times has not resolved the issue for some owners.
- Malfunctioning Convertible Top: A malfunctioning convertible top has been reported as a common problem for the 2003 BMW Z4. The top may move sluggishly and eventually become inoperable. Replacing the motor and hydraulic system has not always resolved the issue for affected owners.
- Steering Drifts: Some drivers have reported that their Z4s tend to drift while driving, which may be caused by various factors such as wheel alignment or tire pressure issues.
- Oil Leaks: BMW Z4s are known to suffer from oil leaks, particularly from the rocker cover gaskets, oil filter housing, and sump. These issues are consistent and relatively easy to fix, but they can be costly if not addressed promptly .
- Misfire Coil Packs and Spark Plugs: Misfire coil packs and spark plugs are common issues in BMW Z4s. These components may need to be replaced to resolve misfire issues, which can range from single misfires to multiple misfire problems .
- Fuel Injectors: Some Z4s experience issues with fuel injectors, which can lead to misfire problems and require attention from a professional .
- High-Pressure Fuel Pump: The high-pressure fuel pump in Z4s is chain-driven and sits underneath the inlet manifold. This component can cause misfire issues, ranging from single misfires to multiple misfire problems. Replacing the pump can resolve this issue, but it is crucial to diagnose the problem correctly to avoid unnecessary repairs .
- Electrical Gremlins: As with many luxury vehicles, the BMW Z4 can experience electrical gremlins, which may affect various electrical components and systems in the car. Thoroughly testing the electrical system and addressing any issues found is essential when purchasing a used Z4.
These common problems should be considered when purchasing, owning, or maintaining a BMW Z4. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
