The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants.

The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.

BMW Z1 (E30 based; 1989–1991)

The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster developed by BMW and was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. It was based on the E30 3 Series platform. The Z1 featured unusual doors which, instead of opening outward or upward, dropped into the door sills and had body panels which could easily be removed and replaced; the car could be driven with all its body panels removed for weight reduction and increased performance. Only 8,000 examples of the Z1 were produced.

Common 2002 Bmw Z4 problems

The BMW Z4, produced since 2002, is a stylish and high-performance two-seater sports car known for its speed, handling, and luxury features. However, like any vehicle, it has some common issues that owners have reported.

One common problem with the BMW Z4 is engine misfiring, which can trigger limp mode to protect the catalytic converter from potential damage. This issue is often caused by a problem with the engine's timing system, which can get out of sync and cause the car to enter limp mode as a precautionary measure.

Steering issues have also been reported by drivers of the 2003-2008 Z4 models. These include clunking steering wheels, sticky steering, and steering drifts. The clunking steering wheel issue, in particular, affects certain Z4 models from 2003 to 2008, causing a clunk or jolt from the steering wheel upon applying the brakes and a cracking noise when driving in reverse. This is due to a faulty front control arm bracket bushing, which can be replaced for around $30 to $80 plus labor costs.

Another common problem with the BMW Z4 is overheating engines, which can be caused by an engine coolant leak from the expansion tank. This issue has been reported in some 2003-2005 and 2008 Z4 models. If left unaddressed, severe engine damage may occur, leading to more expensive repairs.

The BMW Z4's convertible top has also been a source of frustration for some owners. A malfunctioning convertible top has been reported to be a common problem in the 2003 model year, with the part moving sluggishly for a few weeks until it becomes inoperable. Others have replaced the motor and hydraulic system multiple times to fix the issue, but the problem remained unresolved.

In terms of maintenance costs, the BMW Z4 can vary in cost, taking into account factors like fuel efficiency, CO2 emissions, insurance, and servicing. The Z4 comes with different engine options, and their fuel efficiency varies. The four-cylinder models are more fuel-efficient, achieving up to 41.5mpg, while the larger six-cylinder engines consume more fuel, with ratings around 34.4mpg and 34.0mpg. Insurance groups for the Z4 are generally high, and servicing costs at a BMW dealer can be expensive. However, independent specialists may offer more cost-effective options, and shopping around for new or used BMW Z4 parts for repairs and maintenance can save money.

In conclusion, while the BMW Z4 is a stylish and high-performance sports car, it has some common issues that owners have reported, including engine misfiring, steering problems, overheating engines, and malfunctioning convertible tops. Maintenance costs can also vary, but shopping around for parts and independent servicing options can help keep costs down.

Are old Z4 reliable?

We recommend staying away from the 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2016 models. Most of the issues that come with these models come from areas such as the steering and technical malfunctions, like the roof. These troubles, unfortunately, can be expensive to repair and inconvenient.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-27
  • VIN: 4USBT53423L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY LOST POWER ASSISTED ABILITY. STEERING WHEEL WAS DIFFICULT, BACK TO THE OLD MANUAL DAYS.. NEVER THOUGHT TO ASK WHY..BUT VEHICLE ALWAYS HAD A DETENT QUIRK SINCE 2003..JUST THOUGHT IT TYPICAL FOR HOW A SPORTS CAR WAS DESIGNED. AFTER CHECKING OTHERS SIMILAR PROBLEMS I GUESS I'VE BEEN MISLED INTO BELIEVING THAT WAS TYPICAL AFTER ALL THIS TIME.TAKING IT TO THE DEALER IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS TO SERVICE PROBLEM. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM LIKE THIS DETENT THING GET IT CHECKED OUT BEFORE A BAD SITUATION REALLY HAPPENS. *TR

POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-03-16
  • VIN: 4USBT53473L
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: BUT BOUGHT WITH LESS THAN 12,500 MILES, THEY FOUND TURNED UNSTABLE SITUATION, HAS BEEN UNABLE TO FIND WHAT THE REASON, AT TIMES ALMOST A MAJOR ACCIDENT WHEN DRIVING, THE TIRE DOES NOT FEEL STICKY, BUT ON THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR IS ALL OVER THE PLACE (LIKE A DRUNK DRIVER), THE STEERING FEELS VERY LOOSE, NOT TOO SENSITIVE. IF I DO ANYTHING MORE THAN A SLIGHT ROTATION, DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM HAS BEEN STARTED, IF THE CURVE WENT TO THE RIGHT, I HAD TO "JERK" TO GO STRAIGHT TO RECTIFY THE SAME, IF IT WENT. WHEN A STRAIGHT ROAD, IT WILL FEEL VERY STICKY, MOVING WHEELS. THIS IS VERY SCARY, BECAUSE IT CAN NOT BE DIVERTED AT ANY TIME, I WILL LEAVE THE ROAD AND DOWN MILES OF CANYON CREEK. THIS SITUATION WILL NOT OCCUR AT LOW SPEEDS. UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH MY 2003 BMW Z4 STEERING WHEEL. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNSTABLE. FOR EXAMPLE: 1) TO MAINTAIN PULL TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. IT REQUIRES CONSTANT ADJUSTMENT, SO THAT I CAN KEEP THE CAR ALIGNED OR CENTER. 2) I MET A SUDDEN TWITCH TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT WHEN THE ROAD CONTEMPT IMBALANCES. I CAN NEVER PREDICT THE ROAD THE CAR PULLED ME. I STRUGGLED FOR MANY CENTERS TO STOP AT ANY RED LIGHTS KEEP TURNING. 3) SOMETIMES, THE STEERING FEELS LIKE BEING STUCK. 4) I BELIEVE THAT IF ELDERLY PEOPLE TRYING TO DRIVE THIS CAR, SUCH A PROBLEM, THERE WILL BE A CATASTROPHIC COLLAPSE. THIS IS MAINLY BECAUSE THE DRIVER MUST BE A LOT OF ATTENTION TO KEEP THE CAR CENTERED FACT. OTHERWISE, ANY SECOND, YOU MIGHT FIND YOURSELF SOMEWHERE OFF THE ROAD, OR UNDER A TRUCK. 5) I'VE BEEN READING ON THE INTERNET, MANY Z4 OWNERS HAVE ENCOUNTERED SIMILAR PROBLEMS, I DO. *TR

THE VEHICLE WILL BE TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 56,419.
