2023 Bmw X1 problems
The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by German marque BMW since 2009. It is in the subcompact luxury crossover class, and the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. At its introduction in 2009, it was positioned as the smallest SUV in BMW line-up, below the X3 prior to the launch of the smaller X2. The X1 essentially is aiming a wider range of customers due to its smaller size, increased efficiency, and a lower price tag due to the all-wheel drive layout (xDrive) being optional.
The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman. Despite its name, it is now only the second smallest SUV produced by BMW since the introduction of the X2. The third and current generation was released in 2022.
First generation (E84; 2009)
The E84 X1 is the first-generation model and was originally presented as the BMW Concept X1 at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. Development of the vehicle started in 2006 when BMW identified the need for a smaller and more efficient model in its SUV line-up as petrol prices were increasing. Due to the urgent need to produce the vehicle, development and pre-production time was shortened by 40 percent compared to previous X Series models.
It is based on the same platform as the E90 3 Series and features the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The X1 is the first BMW X Series to be available in the sDrive trim (two-wheel drive). It was not introduced to the United States until 2012.
In 2013, the E84 X1 underwent a facelift, featuring restyled exterior and interior design elements, as well as the integration of BMW EfficientDynamics on all models. The original X1 sold 820,529 units.

Common 2023 Bmw X1 problems
The 2023 BMW X1 has been redesigned with notable updates including added tech features, improved power and fuel economy, a new transmission, and a slight increase in size
. However, there are several common problems and drawbacks that owners have reported.
- Powertrain: The BMW X1's powertrain has been criticized for lacking power compared to its competitors, making it the least powerful car in its class . The "drive modes" don't make a significant difference, and the shifts aren't as smooth as one would expect .
- Touchscreen Dependency: The BMW X1 requires you to operate everything, including the air conditioning and drive mode selection, solely through the touch screen. This heavy reliance on touch controls can be unintuitive and frustrating .
- Visible Signs of Cost Cutting: Some visible signs of cost-cutting are evident in the BMW X1. For example, the front cup holders feel cheap compared to their international counterparts, and features like pull tabs to recline and fold the rear seats may not provide the level of convenience one would expect .
- Voice Control Inconsistency: The voice control feature of the BMW X1 can be hit-or-miss, lacking the desired reliability and accuracy .
- Limited Engine and Transmission Options: The BMW X1 offers limited choices when it comes to engine and transmission options, which reduces the scope for customization and personalization .
- Poor Fuel Economy: The petrol engine variant of the BMW X1 may disappoint in terms of fuel efficiency. With an EPA estimate of 28 mpg in combined city and highway driving, it falls in line with average numbers for an extra-small luxury SUV .
- Stiff Ride Quality: Some drivers might find the ride of the BMW X1 to be too stiff, lacking the desired comfort and smoothness .
- Digital Integration of AC Controls: The digital integration of AC controls has been criticized for being poor, making it difficult to use and adjust the temperature settings .
In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the auto-park feature and the fancy display in the 2023 BMW X1.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
- VIN: WBX73EF04P5
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: The rear cross traffic alert does not work. It gives no indication or sound when a car or human drives by. I nearly got into an accident multiple times. When mentioned to my service manager, they tested backing up into a curb and not "cross traffic". They thought it was not a problem, but when I explained the issue of rear cross traffic I was told to bring my vehicle in and that there is a fix. When asked why this doesn't work, or if this is a software update that was missed I was told that they do not know. Only that it is something that they can " add " to my vehicle. No clear explanation.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-29
- VIN: WBX73EF05P5
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While returning home with my wife and cat, we were approaching a train crossing when I attempted to slow down, already under the posted speed limit and I pressed the brakes very lightly to begin slowing to a stop. The brakes locked up and we began sliding toward the train crossing arms and moving train on the tracks, I attempted pumping the brakes at that point realizing something was very wrong. With every slight touch of the brakes the vehicle would skid more, left, and right, until we came to a screeching halt mere feet from the train crossing arms. I have been told now by BMW roadside assistance that my vehicle is still safe to use. Then when I disagreed was transferred to "master mechanic " who promptly told me it was unsafe for me and others on the road. He set up a tow and it was towed away that same day. Now I have spoken to two different Certified BMW dealers, one of whom I purchased the vehicle from. They both said there's nothing they can do about it as there's no fix. The dealer that currently has is said it's safe to drive and I need to plan to pick it up. This is an absolute disaster of immense proportions that is going to cost someone their life undoubtedly. I was willing to let the vehicle sit until a fix was made available but only to be told that they have no loaners available for me. I paid for my vehicle in full at purchase, and this is the product and service I am provided by doing so. Reprehensible.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
- VIN: WBX73EF06P5
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Thankfully, I have not been involved in an accident to-date, but my 2023 BMW X1 has been the subject of a recall involving its braking system since February 2024, with no available remedy as of August 15, 2024. The lack of urgency by BMW to fix an issue involving the safety of its customers and vehicles' occupants is startling. This is unacceptable. I request that NHTSA investigate this issue and hold BMW accountable for remedying the issue now as it has gone beyond a reasonable amount of time to fix the issue. If a fix is not available, BMW should be made to buy back my vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
- VIN: WBX73EF09P5
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The recall number for the incident is 24V-104. The car was recalled in February and the recall repair was completed May 2, 2024. The car is currently at BMW and is available for inspection.BMW has confirmed that the parts they replaced in May malfunctioned. They claim that some of the recall parts had a mechanical problem and that the recent repair, July, was done with parts that had been inspected. On July 22, 2024, I was backing up and when I braked the car jolted as if I hit something and the computer screen showed ABS and parking brake malfunction. When I engaged the brakes they were hesitant and took a long time to stop the car. Fortunately, I was in a parking lot with no cars around so there was ample space for the car to come to a stop. Had I been on the highway or main road, I would have been in an accident as I would not have had enough distance to stop.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-11
- Crash: 1
- VIN: WBX73EF07P5
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle is equipped with a dual clutch transmission and has the EPA mandated auto-start feature. When you stop the vehicle and the engine shuts off and then remove your foot from the brake to go forward, the engine hesitates to restart and then starts, revs, dumps the clutch and propels you forward at a dangerous rate. My wife was trying to pull into the garage and stopped a little short. When she tried to move forward about a foot, the car started and lurched forward hitting the house. There is no way to disable the auto start feature and there are no buttons in the car. This is going to get someone killed when they are trying to make a left turn across traffic and first the car doesn't restart and then it starts and flies into traffic. I complained to BMW and they say this is the way the government mandates the car to be.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
- VIN: WBX73EF07P5
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: BMW has a voice assistant "BMW Assistant" which I have turned off. I verified the setting through a call today with Kingsley of the BMW Genius hotline, 844-443-6487. The problem I am experiencing is that although turned off, the Assistant keeps trying to turn itself on by asking permission which I am driving. One has to either press a button or repeatedly speak to it to try and stop its message. Not only irritating, but it happens during turn by turn navigation and causes distracted driving., I came close to having a collision a couple of times when this happened. Note that Kingsley confirmed that it would continue to occur in the future at random times and there is no way to turn it off. I am assuming at this time it is just a way to try and collect more information to sell. If the Assistant tried to do this when the car is started and stationary, while still irritating, there would be no distracted driving. this a a problem waiting to happen. Negative 2023 Bmw X1 car reviews
Positive 2023 Bmw X1 car reviews
-
I traded my 2021 X3 because I found the interior a bit dated. However, I am really enjoying my new SUV as it is packed with tech and is fun to drive. The massage seats are a cool feature and the cargo space is great. I opted for the upgraded stereo which is solid. The only issue I have encountered so far is that my Spotify connection seems to be sporadic.

I ordered my 2023 X1 back in January and it finally arrived on June 28th. It's fully loaded, including the factory trailer hitch, and I'm really enjoying it. However, after driving around 1000 miles, I noticed a nasty rattle coming from the passenger side and an annoying buzz in my left ear that seems to be coming from the driver's side grab handle. I haven't had a chance to take it in to the dealer yet, but I'm hoping they can help me out. On a positive note, I created a shortcut for the engine start/stop feature, which has been really convenient. During a recent road trip, I got great mileage - 43mpg on the freeway and 38mpg overall. This is my first BMW and I'm really happy with it overall. I just need to get those couple of issues sorted out.

The X1 '23 model has been completely redesigned and is now a worthy member of the BMW family. The finishes, appointments, and design are impressive and showcase the BMW badge. Once you become familiar with the idrive8, you'll appreciate its awesomeness. Although the auto stop/start override can be a bit awkward, I have no other complaints. I absolutely love it! It's the most fun you can have behind the wheel without going to a drive-in movie with a really hot date.

The car is really pleasant to drive. Although some reviews have noted some hesitation in the uptake from a stop, I find it to be agreeable. One of my favourite features is its ability to remember and back the car out of the garage by itself, which is especially helpful for me since my garage is narrow. While the voice commands for navigation could be improved, and the map display is not the best, the ride is reasonably quiet and pretty good on bumps with my 18” wheels. The menu system for setting up options could be simpler, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. The front camera doesn't automatically turn on when driving head first into a space, but it's easy enough to turn on yourself. The rear cross traffic safety warning is a subtle thunk, thunk, thunk, and the car has to be in reverse, which is not as effective as my Toyota's visual and audio warning, but it's still helpful. In suburban driving, which is far from full of traffic lights, I get about 22mpg, but on the highway at a pretty steady 75mph, I get an impressive 36mpg.

I loved my 2018 x1 but unfortunately had to replace it due to high mileage. I was excited to upgrade to the 2023 model, but it hasn't lived up to my expectations. I've noticed that the car hesitates when speeding up, which is concerning for safety. Additionally, the lack of a middle console dial and knobs is frustrating. It's difficult to change the temperature or radio station without taking your eyes off the road. While the voice assist is an option, it can be slow and unreliable. Another issue is that you have to put the car in sport mode every time you start it to disable the auto shut-off feature. This turns the car into a gas guzzler, which defeats the purpose of having an auto shut-off feature. The former x1 had plenty of storage areas, but the new model is wider and bulkier, with fewer discreet storage options. Lastly, a recent system update disabled my Bluetooth and my phone won't connect. Overall, I'm disappointed with the 2023 x1 model.
