2008 Chrysler Crossfire problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Crossfire is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat sports car, marketed by Chrysler and manufactured by Karmann of Germany for the 2004 through 2008 model years.

Developed during the period when Chrysler and Mercedes Benz had merged, known as Daimler Chrysler, the two-seater uses the Mercedes-Benz R170 platform and shares 80% of its components with the first generation SLK. The second generation SLK was built on the R171 platform with model year 2005; the R170 platform was essentially handed down to Chrysler for the Crossfire. Having initially arrived in 2001 as a concept car styled by Eric Stoddard, the Chrysler was further refined by Andrew Dyson before production began in 2003 for 2004 model year sales.

Design

The name "Crossfire" refers to two character lines that run from front to rear along the body sides, prominently crossing below the mirrors on the door panels. Conceived during the period of Daimler Chrysler, the name also refers to the collaboration of the two companies.

The Chrysler Crossfire concept car was introduced at the 2001 North American International Auto Show and the production version was unveiled at the 2002 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2004 model "is as faithful a translation from concept to production as any in recent memory." The concept car was designed "to evoke a strong, passionate, emotional response. We had to retain that. We want to polarize our audience—we want people to love it or hate it."

Conceived as a two-seat halo car for the Chrysler brand, the marketing objective was also to make use of available components using a two-seat roadster chassis. The production car shares about 39% of its parts with Mercedes-Benz vehicles and Chrysler dealers were required to invest in special equipment, tools, and parts to be able to market the new luxury model. The rear-wheel-drive Crossfire coupe styling objective was for a "unique, almost sculptural" design.

The Crossfire 's styling includes a wide stance with 19-inch rear wheels and 18-inch front wheels. Automotive journalists compared the Crossfire to American Motors' 1965–1967 AMC Marlin. Noted journalist, Paul Leinert said the "distinctive boat-tail rear end reminds more than one observer of the old Rambler Marlin." For example, Rob Rothwell wrote "... when I first espied the rear lines of the Chrysler Crossfire I was instantly transported back to 1965 and my favorite car of that year, the Rambler Marlin." Motor Trend also compared the "provocative boattail theme" of the 2004 Crossfire's sheetmetal to that of the AMC Marlin fastback. The Crossfire's tail is "formed as the edges of the roof converge into a kind of teardrop shape, leaving the rear fenders to flare out over the rear wheels."

Chrysler said the Crossfire took inspiration from the 1930s art deco period and buildings such as the Chrysler Building. Motor Trend cites vehicle influences from 1930s including Bugattis and the Talbot Lago. Chrysler wanted to once again offer a performance coupe reminiscent of the luxury reputation they enjoyed during the late 1950s to mid-1960s with the Chrysler 300 letter series coupes and convertibles.

Common 2008 Chrysler Crossfire problems

The Chrysler Crossfire, especially the 2008 model, has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequent issues and their details:

  • Gear Stick Won't Move: Another common problem is the gear stick getting stuck in the park position and not moving. This issue is usually caused by the brake/gear interlock being slightly out of adjustment. While it's possible to take the assembly apart and tighten it up, it's a complicated job that might be best left to professionals.
  • Check Engine Light: The check engine light illuminating for no apparent reason is another common issue with the Crossfire. The most common reason for this is a faulty EGR solenoid, but it's also possible that the car is experiencing false error codes that require a PCM software update from the Chrysler dealership.
  • Seat Heating Not Working: The seats in the Crossfire may stop getting warm when the seat warmer button is pressed. Chrysler has released a special repair kit to resolve this issue, which can be ordered directly from BreakerYard for quick delivery.
  • Alloy Wheel Corrosion: The alloy wheels on the Crossfire can corrode, leading to white powder marks, bubbles, or rust on the wheels. If the problem is not too severe, it may be possible to fix it by rubbing down the affected area, treating it, and repainting it. However, if the problem is severe, it may be necessary to take the wheels to a specialist.
  • Catalytic Converter Failure: The catalytic converter in the Crossfire can fail early, leading to a rattling noise when the engine is started from cold and the foot is pressed on the accelerator. Fitting a replacement catalytic converter is the only way to fix this problem.
  • Headlight Condensation: The headlights in the Crossfire are known for filling up with condensation inside the lens, particularly on colder mornings. There are two options for resolving this issue: drilling small holes at the bottom of the lens to allow excess water to run out or purchasing replacement headlight units.
  • Starting Problems: If the crankshaft position sensor fails in the Crossfire, it can cause starting problems, and the engine management warning light will likely appear on the dashboard. Replacing the crankshaft position sensor is the only way to resolve this issue.
  • Airbag Deployment: There have been reports of airbags deploying for no reason in the Crossfire, with metal fragments inside the airbag potentially causing serious injury. The only solution to this problem is to head to a Chrysler dealer to check if the necessary recall work has been carried out on the vehicle.
  • Expensive Repairs: The Crossfire is known for being an expensive car to repair, with parts and labor costs being high due to the lack of qualified technicians and the need for special tools. This is a particular issue for those buying a used Crossfire out of warranty.
  • Reliability Issues: The Crossfire has a patchy reputation for reliability, with gadgets such as electric seat adjusters potentially expiring expensively after a few years. However, the 3.2 motor is generally considered to be tough and long-lived if serviced correctly.
  • Windows: The Crossfire has been known to have issues with the back window falling out, coming unglued, or stalling while driving. The rear window has also been known to fall out of the convertible top. Windows are the most complained-about issue, with 82 complaints in total.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical issues are also a common problem in the Crossfire, with 15 complaints in total.
  • Engine Issues: Engine issues have been reported in the Crossfire, with 8 complaints in total.
  • Interior Issues: Interior issues have been reported in the Crossfire, with 7 complaints in total.
  • Lights: Lights have been reported as an issue in the Crossfire, with 5 complaints in total.

These are just some of the common problems reported by owners of the Chrysler Crossfire, particularly the 2008 model. While some of these issues are relatively minor, others can be more serious and require professional attention.

Is Crossfire a good car?

After driving the Crossfire, we came away wishing it had more low-end torque, slightly better steering feel, less interior plastic and better ergonomics in the cabin, but we can't deny how much fun the car is on twisty roads, or how upscale it feels when cruising along coastal highways.

Is the Chrysler Crossfire expensive to repair?

The annual maintenance cost of a Chrysler Crossfire is $422. Repair and maintenance costs vary depending on age, mileage, location and shop.

Why did the Crossfire fail?

The Crossfire SRT-6 had a factory wing that looked cheap, and out of place, so the exterior styling was divisive, but the interior was where the Crossfire fell apart.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • VIN: 1C3LN65L78X
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: SUMMARY: THE REAR WINDOW GLASS SEPARATED FROM CONVERTIBLE FABRIC TOP WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. DETAILS: ON 8/13/2016, AT ABOUT NOON, NEAR BERTRAM, TEXAS, ON A HOT CLEAR DAY, I PARKED THE SUBJECT VEHICLE ALONG THE SIDE OF A RESIDENTIAL ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS IN SIGHT THE WHOLE TIME. NOTHING STRUCK OR TOUCHED THE VEHICLE WHILE I TALKED TO NEIGHBORS FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. WHEN I RETURNED, THE REAR WINDOW HAD SEPARATED FROM THE CANVAS ON THE BOTTOM AND SIDES, AND THE LOWER PORTION OF THE WINDOW WAS RESTING ON THE REAR DECK INSIDE THE CAR. THE WINDOW WAS STILL PRECARIOUSLY ATTACHED ALONG THE TOP. THE WIRES CONNECTING TO THE WINDOW GLASS DEFOGGING ELEMENTS WERE STILL ATTACHED AT THE SIDES. IT APPEARED THE BEAD OF GLUE AROUND THE EDGES HAD FAILED, PERHAPS DUE TO HEAT. IT HAD DETACHED FROM THE FABRIC SIDE OF THE GLUE JOINT. I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE BUT THE WINDOW WAS SWINGING AROUND AND HITTING THE CAR BODY, SO I DECIDED IT WAS UNSAFE. I CAREFULLY LOWERED THE TOP INTO THE TRUNK AND CONTINUED HOME. I RETURNED THE TOP TO ITS 'UP' POSITION AND TOOK PHOTOS OF THE SEPARATED WINDOW. IT LOOKED THE SAME AT THAT POINT AS WHEN I FIRST NOTICED IT. (PHOTOS INCLUDED.) I BELIEVE THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE HAD THE GLUE FAILED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE REAR WINDOW COULD HAVE FLOWN OUT OR BLOWN INWARD FROM THE BACK DRAFT, HITTING THE ROLL BARS AND SHATTERING GLASS ONTO THE DRIVER. ACCORDING TO NATIONAL NEWS, CHRYSLER ISSUED A TSB FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM FOR THE 2005 MODEL YEAR OF THIS VEHICLE IN SOUTHERN STATES (INCLUDING TEXAS) AND IS PROVIDING EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR ONLY THOSE VEHICLES. IT APPEARS THIS PROBLEM IS NOT LIMITED TO MODEL YEAR 2005. ALTHOUGH THAT YEAR MAY HAVE MORE COMPLAINTS SINCE OVER 2/3 OF ALL CONVERTIBLES SOLD OF THIS MODEL WERE SOLD IN 2005. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT THAT WARRANTS A RECALL.

I NOTICED A SEPARATION IN THE REAR WINDOW GLASS FROM THE CONVERTIBLE TOP. BY THE TIME I ARRIVED HOME THE GLASS HAS SEPARATED MORE THAN HALF WAY FROM THE CONVERTIBLE TOP. I WILL NOT DRIVE THIS CROSSFIRE ANYMORE AS I BELIEVE THIS SEPARATION MENTIONED ABOVE TO BE UNSAFE AND COULD POSSIBLY FAIL COMPLETELY AND CAUSE A HAZARD TO MYSELF AND OTHERS OR CRASH DURING DRIVING.

Negative 2008 Chrysler Crossfire car reviews

  1. Forest Jakubowski 2024-08-18

Although my current vehicle may not have been my first choice, I am confident in my decision to keep it despite the low residual value. I am aware of the potential negative equity when the loan is paid off, but I am prepared to handle it.

  2. Bart Volkman 2024-03-09

I love many things about my car! For instance, I can easily smoke those little Mitsubishi's and VW's at red lights. Additionally, I consistently get 26-27MPG when driving 80-90 on the highway. I also love that I can put the top down without getting out of the car and take corners at 80 that my Jeep can only take at 50-60. Another great thing is that my wife can't pack 400lbs of clothes when we go on a trip and she is totally fine with that. But most importantly, I still get excited just looking at it even after almost 2 years. If my wife and I had to choose between each other or the car, we'd both take the car. I love my wife of 28 years and I love my car too!

Positive 2008 Chrysler Crossfire car reviews

I'm glad to hear that you've had a positive experience with your car! It's great to find a vehicle that looks and drives well while still being affordable. It's important to make our own informed decisions about the products we choose to buy, rather than just following popular opinions. It sounds like you've found a car that suits your needs perfectly. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I've had this car for about two months now and I'm really enjoying it! I love the way it looks and I always get compliments on it. While I haven't driven many sports cars, this one is definitely a blast to drive. It's worth noting that you need to be in decent physical shape to get in and out of it - unfortunately, my mom can't fit! To give myself some peace of mind, I purchased an extended warranty and Xylon coating from a Chrysler dealership. I'm hoping that this car will be reliable for many years to come, as I tend to keep my cars for at least 10 years. The only downsides are the rapid depreciation that comes with American cars, the need for premium gas, and the requirement for 8.5 quarts of synthetic oil every 3,000 miles. But for now, I have no regrets!

I've always thought the Crossfire is a great looking car with very good performance and handling. However, the complete lack of lumbar support, somewhat cramped interior (I'm 6', 200 lbs), and lack of cup holders, other than 1 pop up, which doesn't work, kept me from buying. Nevertheless, now that Chrysler is selling them at $12,000+ off MSRP/sticker, the deal was too good to pass up. These cars are of very high quality at a bargain price. :)

2008 Bright Silver Automatic/Nav. I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I was lucky enough to purchase this car for less than half of its sticker price back in January 2009, during the last week of production. It's been 7 years and I've only driven 29,000 miles, and I'm happy to say that it's still flawless! In fact, it might just be the best buy of my life... well, except for the $399.99 55 inch 4K TV I recently purchased that came with a 4 year factory warranty. Take care!

We are thrilled with our Crossfire! My wife had a budget of $40k for a convertible and she chose the Crossfire because of its stunning design and head-turning factor. She absolutely adores her car. What made it even better was the amazing deal we got on this fully loaded vehicle. At $29,900, no other convertible could match the price with this many features. It's the perfect time to get this German-built sports car at the end of the model year.
