Bmw X1 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by German marque BMW since 2009. It is in the subcompact luxury crossover class, and the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. At its introduction in 2009, it was positioned as the smallest SUV in BMW line-up, below the X3 prior to the launch of the smaller X2. The X1 essentially is aiming a wider range of customers due to its smaller size, increased efficiency, and a lower price tag due to the all-wheel drive layout (xDrive) being optional.

The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman. Despite its name, it is now only the second smallest SUV produced by BMW since the introduction of the X2. The third and current generation was released in 2022.

First generation (E84; 2009)

The E84 X1 is the first-generation model and was originally presented as the BMW Concept X1 at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. Development of the vehicle started in 2006 when BMW identified the need for a smaller and more efficient model in its SUV line-up as petrol prices were increasing. Due to the urgent need to produce the vehicle, development and pre-production time was shortened by 40 percent compared to previous X Series models.

It is based on the same platform as the E90 3 Series and features the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The X1 is the first BMW X Series to be available in the sDrive trim (two-wheel drive). It was not introduced to the United States until 2012.

In 2013, the E84 X1 underwent a facelift, featuring restyled exterior and interior design elements, as well as the integration of BMW EfficientDynamics on all models. The original X1 sold 820,529 units.

Common Bmw X1 problems

The BMW X1 is a popular compact luxury crossover SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Suspension Problems: BMW X1 owners have reported excessive noise from suspension components, premature wear of bushings or ball joints, and uneven tire wear. These problems can compromise ride quality, reduce stability, and increase road noise. Resolving suspension issues often involves inspecting and replacing worn components, aligning the wheels, or upgrading to aftermarket suspension kits for improved durability.
  • Transmission Problems: Instances of jerky gear shifts, delayed engagement, or transmission fluid leaks have been reported by some BMW X1 drivers. These issues can compromise driving comfort and overall vehicle performance. Repairing transmission problems may necessitate software updates, fluid flushes, or in more severe cases, transmission component replacements.
  • Oil Pan Leaks: BMW X1 owners have reported oil pan leaks, which can lead to excessive oil consumption and potential engine damage. Addressing this issue may involve inspecting for oil leaks, replacing faulty seals or gaskets, or monitoring oil consumption closely to prevent engine damage.
  • Cooling System Problems: Drivers have reported an issue with the cooling system on their BMW X1, with reports of the model leaking engine coolant. This problem can commonly be caused by corrosion of the cooling system components.
  • Excessive Brake Pad Wear: Some BMW X1 owners have reported excessive brake pad wear, which can lead to reduced braking performance and increased stopping distances. This issue may be caused by factors such as aggressive driving or improper brake maintenance.

While the BMW X1 is known for its sporty design, premium features, and iconic BMW driving experience, it is not immune to these common problems. Staying informed and proactive about maintenance and repairs can help BMW X1 owners maintain the vehicle's performance, safety, and longevity.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-20
  • VIN: WBXHT3C34H5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: It displays a secure vehicle against rolling warning which is caused by a faulty gear selector assembly. After researching on the Internet and talking to the dealer repair specialist, this seems to be a common issue for this model and it should not have happened this early in the car (the car is only 7 yrs old and has very low mileage since it was not driven much during 3 years of covid). This is a design issue that should have been fixed or recalled by the manufacturer. It is not a normal wear and tear issue and the consumer should not be paying thousands of dollars to fix a car design issue that impacts safety.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-13
  • VIN: WBX73EF04P5
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: The rear cross traffic alert does not work. It gives no indication or sound when a car or human drives by. I nearly got into an accident multiple times. When mentioned to my service manager, they tested backing up into a curb and not "cross traffic". They thought it was not a problem, but when I explained the issue of rear cross traffic I was told to bring my vehicle in and that there is a fix. When asked why this doesn't work, or if this is a software update that was missed I was told that they do not know. Only that it is something that they can " add " to my vehicle. No clear explanation.
Bmw X1 2023
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-29
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: WBX73EF05P5
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While returning home with my wife and cat, we were approaching a train crossing when I attempted to slow down, already under the posted speed limit and I pressed the brakes very lightly to begin slowing to a stop. The brakes locked up and we began sliding toward the train crossing arms and moving train on the tracks, I attempted pumping the brakes at that point realizing something was very wrong. With every slight touch of the brakes the vehicle would skid more, left, and right, until we came to a screeching halt mere feet from the train crossing arms. I have been told now by BMW roadside assistance that my vehicle is still safe to use. Then when I disagreed was transferred to "master mechanic " who promptly told me it was unsafe for me and others on the road. He set up a tow and it was towed away that same day. Now I have spoken to two different Certified BMW dealers, one of whom I purchased the vehicle from. They both said there's nothing they can do about it as there's no fix. The dealer that currently has is said it's safe to drive and I need to plan to pick it up. This is an absolute disaster of immense proportions that is going to cost someone their life undoubtedly. I was willing to let the vehicle sit until a fix was made available but only to be told that they have no loaners available for me. I paid for my vehicle in full at purchase, and this is the product and service I am provided by doing so. Reprehensible.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-04
  • VIN: WBXHT3Z38G4
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transmission lock sensor is defective in this car design- the spring in the gearshift assembly that contacts the transmission lock sensor has a faulty design and is prone to breaking. This leads to a warning in the car that the transmission lock has not occurred when the car is in park (although it is actually functioning). This creates a "false alarm" situation that then does not allow the user to know if the transmission is truly locked in park This defect has occurred in my car as diagnosed by both dealer and independent mechanic. This is a common and known defect amongst X1 owners (as well as the mechanical sibling Mini Cooper). It is also well known amongst the BMW dealer service; It should be consider a recall defect

The service brake and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer but was not yet diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. Latest negative Bmw X1 car reviews

  1. Tommie Ledner 2025-08-12

    Vehicle year: 2020

I have owned Lexus and Audi vehicles in the past, but I have never experienced such persistent issues with rotors, brakes, and wheel bearings as I have with my leased BMW. Additionally, the Bluetooth functionality on the entertainment system is subpar and unreliable. Despite my attempts to resolve these issues with BMW, they have been unable to provide a satisfactory solution. Furthermore, I have found their customer service to be unprofessional and lacking in quality for a corporate entity.

  2. Dax Donnelly 2025-08-06

    Vehicle year: 2017

Overall, it sounds like you had an okay experience with the car, but unfortunately, you did encounter some reliability issues. While cruising on the highway, the car feels solid and smooth, although there is some tire noise. However, it's concerning that within two and a half years and around 25k miles, you needed replacements and fixes for various things, including the air conditioning, door latch, liftgate, and battery. It's understandable that this experience has left you feeling disappointed, and we hope that your next car will be more reliable.

  3. Van Hermann 2025-07-26

    Vehicle year: 2020

My X1 is a great car for city driving, but it falls short on the highway. While it handles exceptionally well in the city and has a great steering radius, it requires constant steering to maintain a straight path at speeds over sixty-five mph. Additionally, the road noise at high speeds is almost unbearable, making it difficult to carry on a conversation, listen to music, podcasts, or audio books. Backseat passengers often have to yell to be heard, and my ears ring after a highway trip as if I had been in a noisy factory or loud concert. With 20k miles, I'm ready for a new vehicle, and I won't be choosing a Beemer again!

  4. Julien Beatty 2025-07-25

    Vehicle year: 2020

Sorry to hear that your experience with the X-1 hasn't been as great as you expected. After a year of driving, it seems to have dropped from a 9+ rating to a 6.6.

  5. Mack Orn 2025-07-11

    Vehicle year: 2019

Although the author of this text has had a negative experience with their 2017 X1 sDrive28i, it is important to note that every car is different and experiences may vary. It is unfortunate that the author has had to spend a significant amount of time in the BMW service department, but it is important to remember that BMW has a strong reputation for quality and reliability. While the author has had issues with their brakes and tires, it is important to note that regular maintenance and care can help prevent these issues from occurring. Additionally, while the author has expressed dissatisfaction with the X1's front-wheel drive, it is important to note that the all-wheel drive version may provide a better driving experience. Overall, it is important to consider all factors when purchasing a car and to do thorough research before making a decision.

I recently switched from a Subaru Outback 3.6R to my first BMW, an X1. As someone who enjoys a powerful acceleration, I was looking for a car that could balance that with fuel efficiency. While the Outback's 6-cylinder engine provided the acceleration I craved, its fuel economy was disappointing, especially in the tough traffic of Brooklyn, NY where I live. After test driving the X1, I found that its turbo 4-cylinder engine gave me the acceleration I wanted while also providing decent gas mileage. So far, this theory has proven true. The X1 is quick and nimble, about half a second faster to 60 than the 3.6R, and my gas mileage has improved by 4-5 mpg, especially on the highway. During a 1300 mile trip down the east coast, I averaged about 30 mpg, which the Outback never came close to. While the Outback had more cabin space, especially for rear seat passengers, the X1's slightly smaller size makes it easier to park on the street. Overall, the X1 beats the Outback in most categories that matter to me, including aesthetics. My only complaints are with the Bluetooth entertainment system and driver memory settings, which can only store two profiles and sometimes bounces between my phone and my wife's. We prefer using Waze on our phones to the X1's navigation, so consistency in Bluetooth connection is important. It's a bit irritating that when you switch from wireless to USB connection, the car disconnects and you have to reconnect. Additionally, I've noticed that the car sometimes loses my settings, so I plan on going back to the dealership to see if they can help. However, I want to make it clear that I'm very happy with the car overall. It's one of the best cars I've owned and a great value for the price!

I've had my X1 for 2 months and I absolutely love it! As someone who prefers driving smaller cars, I was looking for something that was easy to access and had ample storage space. While I was considering the CRV and the CX5, the refinement and drive of the X1 made it the clear winner. Although there are a few things I wish BMW would improve, such as making more safety features available (like blind spot monitoring), including standard LED headlights, adding an extra half inch to an inch to the seat bottoms, and making option selections easier.

I have driven my 2013 xDrive28 for 25000 miles and I have no regrets. It is a surprisingly good wagon with an impressive 8spd transmission and strong/efficient 4cyl. I do wish that I had paddle shifters on mine, as I use the manual shifting option quite often and would prefer to use paddle shifters. The ergonomics are superb and the electronics are mostly useful. The iDrive system is fairly intuitive and the NAV system is effective, although it can be a bit frustrating to enter addresses/destinations using voice commands. When I bought it two years ago, I couldn't find a better package for the price, and I still can't find anything that offers fewer compromises overall. Although it is small, I'm 5'10

I recently purchased a certified pre-owned BMW X1 with low miles. I was looking for something a step above the main players in this segment, such as the CR-V and CX-5, and I'm happy to say that I found it. I love the SUV-like looks and the performance really shines compared to competitors. I was lucky enough to find one optioned with sport seats, which are so much more comfortable than the standard seats in my opinion. If you're considering this vehicle, make sure to spend some quality time testing for comfort or try to find one with sport seats. The technology in the BMW iDrive system has a steep learning curve, but I hear the updated versions are a little better. Unfortunately, there's no Apple Car Play, which is a shame, especially in a luxury vehicle. However, the upgraded sound system is outstanding and I highly recommend it. The heads up display is actually quite useful once you get used to it. My only complaint is the BMW navigation system that requires you to purchase and manually install map updates. Without the ability to use Apple Car Play, the built-in navigation is my primary means of navigating and I've already discovered some missing roads in my area. However, this is only an inconvenience if you want to use the factory navigation, which is really your only option on the infotainment screen. Lastly, I was surprised that my fully loaded X1 did not come with blind spot monitoring, but I don't mind checking my own blind spots. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and I think it's a great value in the used market.

I purchased the X1 because it represents a rare breed of BMW from a time when the brand was known for its agility and precision. The car boasts the same chassis and handling dynamics as the previous generation E90/E91 platform, which is widely regarded as one of the best handling 3 series. Unlike BMW's newer models, the X1 features hydraulic steering, which provides a more precise and responsive driving experience. Additionally, the car's drive train is top-notch. All of these features, combined with its relatively low price, make the X1 a truly unique vehicle. It's worth noting that the 2016 model year will see the introduction of a front-wheel drive platform shared with the Mini Cooper, which may not appeal to everyone.
