The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by German marque BMW since 2009. It is in the subcompact luxury crossover class, and the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. At its introduction in 2009, it was positioned as the smallest SUV in BMW line-up, below the X3 prior to the launch of the smaller X2. The X1 essentially is aiming a wider range of customers due to its smaller size, increased efficiency, and a lower price tag due to the all-wheel drive layout (xDrive) being optional.
The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman. Despite its name, it is now only the second smallest SUV produced by BMW since the introduction of the X2. The third and current generation was released in 2022.
First generation (E84; 2009)
The E84 X1 is the first-generation model and was originally presented as the BMW Concept X1 at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. Development of the vehicle started in 2006 when BMW identified the need for a smaller and more efficient model in its SUV line-up as petrol prices were increasing. Due to the urgent need to produce the vehicle, development and pre-production time was shortened by 40 percent compared to previous X Series models.
It is based on the same platform as the E90 3 Series and features the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The X1 is the first BMW X Series to be available in the sDrive trim (two-wheel drive). It was not introduced to the United States until 2012.
In 2013, the E84 X1 underwent a facelift, featuring restyled exterior and interior design elements, as well as the integration of BMW EfficientDynamics on all models. The original X1 sold 820,529 units.

After researching on the Internet and talking to the dealer repair specialist, this seems to be a common issue for this model and it should not have happened this early in the car (the car is only 7 yrs old and has very low mileage since it was not driven much during 3 years of covid). This is a design issue that should have been fixed or recalled by the manufacturer. It is not a normal wear and tear issue and the consumer should not be paying thousands of dollars to fix a car design issue that impacts safety.

When mentioned to my service manager, they tested backing up into a curb and not "cross traffic". They thought it was not a problem, but when I explained the issue of rear cross traffic I was told to bring my vehicle in and that there is a fix. When asked why this doesn't work, or if this is a software update that was missed I was told that they do not know. Only that it is something that they can " add " to my vehicle. No clear explanation.

- Summary: While returning home with my wife and cat, we were approaching a train crossing when I attempted to slow down, already under the posted speed limit and I pressed the brakes very lightly to begin slowing to a stop. The brakes locked up and we began sliding toward the train crossing arms and moving train on the tracks, I attempted pumping the brakes at that point realizing something was very wrong. With every slight touch of the brakes the vehicle would skid more, left, and right, until we came to a screeching halt mere feet from the train crossing arms. I have been told now by BMW roadside assistance that my vehicle is still safe to use. Then when I disagreed was transferred to "master mechanic " who promptly told me it was unsafe for me and others on the road. He set up a tow and it was towed away that same day. Now I have spoken to two different Certified BMW dealers, one of whom I purchased the vehicle from. They both said there's nothing they can do about it as there's no fix. The dealer that currently has is said it's safe to drive and I need to plan to pick it up. This is an absolute disaster of immense proportions that is going to cost someone their life undoubtedly. I was willing to let the vehicle sit until a fix was made available but only to be told that they have no loaners available for me. I paid for my vehicle in full at purchase, and this is the product and service I am provided by doing so. Reprehensible.

This creates a "false alarm" situation that then does not allow the user to know if the transmission is truly locked in park This defect has occurred in my car as diagnosed by both dealer and independent mechanic. I recently purchased a CPO X1 after test driving several small SUVs, both luxury and mainstream. My main priorities were a vehicle that was fun to drive, had a good sound system, easy-to-use infotainment, Apple Carplay, decent room, and basic crash avoidance features. After careful consideration, I chose the X1 due to its large cargo hold (which fits my golf bag without taking out the driver), driving dynamics, fuel economy, and electronics. Although I also loved the Golf GTI, the X1 ultimately won me over. After 3 months of ownership, I can confidently say that it is way more affordable than I initially thought. I was able to purchase a well-optioned vehicle with 11k miles on the odometer (service loaner) for at least 5-7k less than a comparably equipped CRV, Tiguan, or GTI. I am thoroughly enjoying my X1 and here are some of my thoughts. It is a great daily driver, fun enough and nimble. It is stable at high speeds on the freeway and easy to manage in tight quarters. The transmission is well-matched to the engine and there is no torque steer. I am averaging 28 mpg in mixed driving, which is pretty good for the way I drive. I can use mid-grade gas (89 octane) if I am looking to save on fuel. I always get at least 400 miles to a tank and can stretch it to 500 if I am doing highway driving, which is nice. I love the view out of the front windshield, it is wide and clear like a minivan, much better than many comparable vehicles, and way better than your average car these days. The electronics/infotainment are really pretty good once you figure them out. You can program the preset buttons on the dash for just about anything, for example, my preset 1 is set to navigate home. Preset 8 is for tone adjustment. If you forget, you just hover your finger over the button and it will tell you what is set up for. Take advantage of the BMW Encore program and they will help you figure it all out. You can set up memory settings for multiple drivers, etc. The back seats are very roomy given the size of the vehicle.The model year offers Apple Carplay for free, but unfortunately, it requires a yearly subscription for the 2019 model. If you're interested in learning more about the X1, there's an active forum where owners share their experiences and common fixes. I personally love the heads-up display that shows driving speed, speed limit, and navigation directions. The HiFi sound system is good enough for me, but if you're looking for an upgrade, there are plug-and-play aftermarket options available. The interior is nice and clean, without any ridiculous contours or curves. The ambient lighting feature is also pretty cool, and you can configure it however you like. So far, my X1 has been trouble-free, which is great. Some people have complained about the narrow seats, but I find them comfortable at 160 lbs. The only downside is that it's a bit louder than I would like, but that's mostly due to the run-flat tires. At first, I considered switching to conventional tires, but now I think I'll stick with the run-flats. It's reassuring to know that I won't be stuck on the side of the road in bad weather or a bad neighborhood. One thing to note is that there's no blind spot warning, but I don't rely on this feature anyway. It's surprising that it's unavailable, but it's not a deal-breaker for me.

Hey there! It's important to find a car that meets all your needs, right? Well, the X1 is a great option for those who prioritize safety, quality, and performance. Although it may have limited cargo capacity and a slightly cramped rear seat, it's still roomier than most small vehicles out there. If you need more space, you might want to consider the X3 or X5. But for me and my family, the X1 is just perfect. We have small children, so the rear seat is not an issue. Plus, it's much easier to park than our larger car, which is a huge plus in our area. And let me tell you, the X1's fuel economy is impressive - we got 32mpg on the highway during a road trip! Overall, I highly recommend this great small SUV.

Returning this car at the end of the lease is regrettable. It is the perfect multi-purpose vehicle, surprisingly spacious and enjoyable to drive thanks to its 328 engine. This model represents a sweet spot in the BMW product line. The trunk accommodated 4 adults and 2 70lb labradors with ease, and we even added a trailer hitch for a 4 bike Thule rack. After cleaning off the mud, it's a blast to drive in sport mode. This car is just as enjoyable to drive as the v8 turbo and straight 6 turbo BMWs we have owned.

However, the seats are quite hard and the car lacks the Blind Spot Monitoring safety feature. Additionally, the braking is not as good as previous X1 models and there is no Android compatibility. Overall, it's a great car with some room for improvement.

I had a 2013 BMW X1 with 49,000 miles on it. I made sure to get regular oil changes. Unfortunately, the car experienced complete engine failure in the middle of a busy intersection. It was a scary experience as there were no lights, no error messages, and the wheels would not turn. I had to call a tow company to drag it onto a truck and take it to the dealer. The dealer had the car for 6 months, but unfortunately, they were unable to find out what was wrong with it. They gave me an estimate for $17,000 to replace the engine, which was a huge shock. I later found out that BMW engines use plastic parts inside the engine that can fail, and BMW only does a recall if the government makes them. In the end, I decided to sell the car and took a $10,000 loss. It was definitely the worst car experience of my life.

I recently upgraded from a Jeep Cherokee to a brand new X1 lease, but unfortunately, after 18 months of use, I am not impressed and not happy at all. While the engine is better than my 2015 Jeep, it still lacks the performance I was hoping for. Additionally, the materials used in the X1 do not feel as expensive as those in my Jeep. I have been experiencing cracking noises from the back seats, and while the service team has been nice and taken a look at it, they have not been able to fix the issue. My girlfriend's Chevy Cruze is much smoother in terms of noises. Furthermore, the X1 has very limited technology, with a small screen and no navigation. As someone who has owned two BMWs, it is discouraging to see that the competition has surpassed BMW in terms of engine performance and infotainment technology. This was not the case when I got my first brand new BMW in 2006. I am now eagerly waiting for my lease to end so that I can either switch to a Tesla or go back to Jeep if I want to go cheap. Update: 6/3/2020: I am still experiencing the same issues, and I have come to the conclusion that this car is not worth owning. As soon as my lease ends, I will be switching to a Tesla. I am done with fragile cars that barely work. Update: 12/06/2020: Despite driving an X3 and getting a really good deal on it, I have still decided to go ahead and order a Tesla Model Y. I do not believe that BMW has enough technology in terms of entertainment, self-driving, and electrification, so I will not be happy with a 2L engine and an older-looking vehicle.

We chose a BMW for its reputation of quality, but unfortunately, our experience did not meet our expectations. The display was difficult to navigate and operate, and we experienced issues with the CarPlay connection at critical times. Our frustration reached its peak when the vehicle failed to start during a trip to Vermont, causing us to lose hotel deposits and valuable time. Thankfully, the repairs were covered under warranty, but it was still an inconvenience. As a result, we decided to sell the car after less than a year of use.

Overall, the car is a real joy to drive. However, we have experienced some major mechanical issues. Unfortunately, we have had to take it to the shop twice for cylinder replacements, once for a catalytic converter failure, and now for a transmission failure. All of this has happened within 6 months and less than 15,000 miles. We are hoping that the BMW dealer will help rectify the situation. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The car has sporty handling and get-up-and-go, but falls short in other areas. Some of the less-than-optimal features include quick-to-fog windows when the heat is on, limited back-seat leg-room, and a degraded HD radio within the first year. Additionally, the computer system frequently alerts (then not alerts) that all 4 tires are either low and/or flat and then not alerting on this, as well as frequently alerting that radiator fluid is needed (within months of purchasing car and after adding fluid) and then not alerting on this.
