2016 Bmw X1 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by German marque BMW since 2009. It is in the subcompact luxury crossover class, and the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. At its introduction in 2009, it was positioned as the smallest SUV in BMW line-up, below the X3 prior to the launch of the smaller X2. The X1 essentially is aiming a wider range of customers due to its smaller size, increased efficiency, and a lower price tag due to the all-wheel drive layout (xDrive) being optional.

The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman. Despite its name, it is now only the second smallest SUV produced by BMW since the introduction of the X2. The third and current generation was released in 2022.

First generation (E84; 2009)

The E84 X1 is the first-generation model and was originally presented as the BMW Concept X1 at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. Development of the vehicle started in 2006 when BMW identified the need for a smaller and more efficient model in its SUV line-up as petrol prices were increasing. Due to the urgent need to produce the vehicle, development and pre-production time was shortened by 40 percent compared to previous X Series models.

It is based on the same platform as the E90 3 Series and features the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The X1 is the first BMW X Series to be available in the sDrive trim (two-wheel drive). It was not introduced to the United States until 2012.

In 2013, the E84 X1 underwent a facelift, featuring restyled exterior and interior design elements, as well as the integration of BMW EfficientDynamics on all models. The original X1 sold 820,529 units.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
  • VIN: WBXHT3Z38G4
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The transmission lock sensor is defective in this car design- the spring in the gearshift assembly that contacts the transmission lock sensor has a faulty design and is prone to breaking. This leads to a warning in the car that the transmission lock has not occurred when the car is in park (although it is actually functioning). This creates a "false alarm" situation that then does not allow the user to know if the transmission is truly locked in park This defect has occurred in my car as diagnosed by both dealer and independent mechanic. This is a common and known defect amongst X1 owners (as well as the mechanical sibling Mini Cooper). It is also well known amongst the BMW dealer service; It should be consider a recall defect

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • VIN: WBXHT3C34G5

  • VIN: WBXHT3C30GP
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Received an error message: Transmission. Use parking break to prevent rolling. Dealership said it was the internal gear shift. It didn’t recognize the vehicle was in park. It was an expensive repair because they had to remove the console to fix. Was told it was an issue with my model.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-16
  • VIN: WBXHT3C3XGP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: Every time I start or stop my vehicle I get a notification that shows Transmission: Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center. And my console has a hazard warning that shows: Secure vehicle against rolling. This happens every time, even if the car is parked on a completely flat surface in no danger whatsoever of rolling. I've read SEVERAL X1 owners get this message and all state this needs to be a RECALL. They take their vehicles in for service and are told it's between $2500 and $3000 due to a tiny spring that breaks and the selector no longer communicates with the car in the parking position, and because of this there is an error message in dashboard in which warns you to make sure the vehicle is secure

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-27
  • VIN: WBXHT3C35GP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Keep getting the following warning "Transmission - secure vehicle with parking brake". It seems this is a known issue relating to a simple spring in the gear shifter that causes the computer to not recognize that the vehicle is in park. It's not only a very expensive repair for such a simple part failure, but also a safety concern in not knowing if the vehicle is secure to park.
2024-05-26

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
  • VIN: WBXHT3C3XGP
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: During the parking of the vehicle (gearbox shifter in “Park Position") and after turning off the engine, the iDrive system shows the following message: “Secure vehicle with parking brake and have the problem checked by dealership. This happens when I start up the vehicle in park and when turning off the vehicle. Also, when the vehicle is parked on level ground the error will remain even if the parking brake is applied. After turning on the engine again and putting the shifter either in R or D position, the error goes away. Dealership error computer diagnostic shows the code “420106” - Shift Lock solenoid: Selector lever wrongly not locked in Park. I shared with the dealership that this is a manufacturer problem and if they could fix it for free or give me a discount to fix the problem due to safety issues and I was told “No” I have to pay the total cost to repair this problem. Currently I am still driving a vehicle that can increase my risk of injury and the injury of bystanders. I purchased this vehicle after I retired because BMW makes good vehicles and this would be the last car I would purchase in my life.

  • Summary: Error message stating “secure vehicle from rolling”. This is a common issue with the X1. I’ve found countless complaints of the issue on BMW forums. Dealers are quoting $3000-$3500 for the repairs due to the time it takes to repair. BMW has in some cases acknowledged the issue and provided repair as a goodwill gesture but has yet to issue a recall for this known issue.

  • VIN: WBXHT3C31G5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-15
  • VIN: WBXHT3Z38G4
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Please note that this is NOT the result of an accident. The car is a 2016 BMW X1 model which we have purchased in July 2020 as a BMW certified vehicle from a BMW dealer. Starting in December 2023 the car dashboard shows a warning light saying Secure Vehicle from Rolling. I have read that is it due to a broken pin in the transmission and it seems a common problem in 2016-17 BMWs X1 . BMW should have issued a recall . Again, there was NO accident.
2024-01-18

SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-11
  • VIN: WBXHT3C33GP
  • Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Front left strut and right motor mount failed at less than 40K miles. Vehicle was not driven off road and was not in any accidents. This seems extremely early for such a failure. BMW dealer noted there was a "bulletin" on this model that if one strut failed, the pair should be replaced. It seems there may be a larger issue and possibly the need for a safety recall. Water pump also failed
2024-01-05

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
  • VIN: WBXHT3C37GP
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When turning car on and off error message “Secure Vehicle against rolling”. Everything shifts completely fine in the car, the parking brake engages and the car shifts into park fine. I’ve been told by dealer to bring in for $199 to do an assessment. I see on line this is a common issue and dealers charge between $2000 and $3000 to repair. I submit that this issue should be corrected by BMW through a recall.
2023-12-26

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-24
  • VIN: WBXHT3C31GP
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

This small faulty spring costs only $10 but because of where it is located in the car will cost close to $4,000 to fix; it’s a well-known problem in X1s. This should be recalled.
2023-12-26

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
  • VIN: WBXHT3C35GP
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

  • VIN: WBXHT3C37GP
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Many X1 owners have reported the "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling Error" online in forums once the vehicle hits 100K miles. BMW is charging customers over $3K to fix a worn out spring that costs less than $10 on eBay. This should be under recall!
2023-12-15

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-22
  • VIN: WBXHT3C31G5
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: 2016 BMW X1 - 16,500 miles. When the car is in idle and the wheel is turned left or right it makes a groaning sound. The dealer says the strut mounts failed, and they need to take out the spring shocks, replace the mounts, and realign the vehicle. The vehicle is out of warranty (warranty was 4 yrs or 50,000 miles). When I look on BMW forums I see numerous other X1 owners had this issue at low mileages such as 300, 5000, 7000, 18000, 25000, etc miles. And that on 11/1/16 BMW knew of this defective part, that affected vehicles produced from 7/1/15 to 9/29/16, and issued TSB: SI B31 05 16. However, BMW did not notify owners of the defective part so it could be repaired while the car was under warranty.

Negative 2016 Bmw X1 car reviews

  1. Garrison Wyman 2025-01-06

I've been driving this car for over a month now, it's a loaner from the dealership. While the handling is very good, I find the comfort to be pretty bad and the vehicle is really noisy. The engine is adequate for this size and the car looks great. Unfortunately, my phone is often not recognized and I can't control it from the entertainment system. On the bright side, the GPS is good. However, the car is full of little noises and the road noise is incredibly loud.

  2. Jillian Hauck 2024-10-15

Whoever designed the front seats should be fired. They lack much support and the seats are too short so on long drives you can really feel the lack of support on your legs. Otherwise this is a great little car. If not for the uncomfortable front seats, I would give this car 5 stars.

  3. Curtis Romaguera 2024-10-15

The good: This small SUV is faster than others in its size range and has the sleek BMW look. The bad: Unfortunately, the seats are not the most comfortable. During my test drive, they seemed fine, but after sitting in them for a while, it felt like sitting on a flat park bench. It's worth noting that sport seats are only available in the M package, which is not commonly ordered by dealerships here.

  4. Gussie Jaskolski 2024-06-11

I recently purchased a certified pre-owned x1 that was still under warranty and less than 3 years old with only 20k miles. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the vehicle. The sunroof visor came loose and ripped out one side, and a body panel flew off in a drive-through car wash. Additionally, the rain sensor on the 'auto' wipers doesn't work if the sun is directed towards the windshield. The door locks cannot be customized, which could be problematic in the event of an accident with young children in the back seat. The backseat does not provide enough space for a medium-sized rear-facing car seat without moving the front seat all the way forward. The interior finishes are also showing some wear and tear, with plastic cracking near the parking brake lever and rubber door handles flaking away. Lastly, the audio preferences reset every time the car is turned off, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the car does not automatically disconnect Bluetooth phone calls when turned off, which can be inconvenient. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that they can be resolved and I can continue to enjoy my x1.

  5. Adrian Hodkiewicz 2024-03-20

I've had my BMW X1 for three months now and unfortunately, I've had to take it in for repairs multiple times due to issues with the electrical system. Whenever the system malfunctions, my dashboard lights up with various warnings such as the parking brake being on or low tire pressure. This makes it difficult to steer and the car does a stop/start, stop/start. Although BMW has attempted to fix the issue, it only works for a short while before the problem resurfaces. It's been a frustrating experience and I'm disappointed with my purchase. I hope to find a solution soon.

Positive 2016 Bmw X1 car reviews

  1. Lexus Cronin 2025-01-08

I'm so glad to hear that you've had a great experience with your BMW X1! It sounds like it really lives up to BMW's reputation for best in class performance, fuel economy, and cargo space. I appreciate that you took the time to evaluate other comparable models before making your decision, and it's great to hear that the X1 came out on top. The sliding 2nd row seat sounds like a really useful option for gaining flexibility with passengers and cargo. It's also great to hear that the information technology is well-engineered and easy to use. Thank you for sharing your positive experience and recommendation - I'm sure others will find it helpful!

  2. Jared Bartoletti 2025-01-04

I came across this amazing car at my local dealer and as a TDI victim, I was pleasantly surprised. It's the perfect size, not too big, but big enough to be comfortable. The creature comforts are unbelievable and the handling, acceleration and seats are all fantastic. I strongly recommend that you at least go and test drive one, you won't be disappointed. The lighting at night is really neat and BMW rebuilds their cars on the inside, not with some new plastic molding like other car companies. I just wanted to let people know how much I enjoy it. This is my first review ever and I'm glad to share my experience with you.

  3. Leif Stark 2024-11-29

I recently traded in my 2013 320 and although I loved my car, it was time to give it up since it was a lease. I decided to purchase the x1 and it was a great choice! I absolutely love this SUV - it looks awesome, drives awesome, and the wheels are fantastic. I love everything about it, and the gas mileage is just as great as my 320. I was never at a gas pump before because the gas was so good! The x1 has been changed this year and it has become an even more awesome SUV. I would highly recommend this car.

  4. Everardo Nader 2024-11-02

If you're in the market for a small, all-wheel drive, luxury SUV that handles like a sports car, the BMW X1 is the perfect choice. This beauty is loaded with all the extras, including heated leather seats and steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, surround sound, and Bluetooth. It performs exceptionally well, making it an ideal vehicle for any adventure. Load up the back or the custom BMW roof rack with your golf clubs or outdoor gear and hit the road!

  5. Cary Collier 2024-10-28

Great visibility, handling, breaking, comfort, small and easy to drive! I'm so glad I found all these criteria in one vehicle, the X1. It's been a year and I still LOVE my X1. The only downside is the run flat tires - if something happens to one tire, you need to change them all. Thankfully, I was able to get one tire repaired for just $80. The fold down seats are also a great and very useful feature!
