2017 Bmw X1 problems

The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by German marque BMW since 2009. It is in the subcompact luxury crossover class, and the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. At its introduction in 2009, it was positioned as the smallest SUV in BMW line-up, below the X3 prior to the launch of the smaller X2. The X1 essentially is aiming a wider range of customers due to its smaller size, increased efficiency, and a lower price tag due to the all-wheel drive layout (xDrive) being optional.

The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman. Despite its name, it is now only the second smallest SUV produced by BMW since the introduction of the X2. The third and current generation was released in 2022.

First generation (E84; 2009)

The E84 X1 is the first-generation model and was originally presented as the BMW Concept X1 at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. Development of the vehicle started in 2006 when BMW identified the need for a smaller and more efficient model in its SUV line-up as petrol prices were increasing. Due to the urgent need to produce the vehicle, development and pre-production time was shortened by 40 percent compared to previous X Series models.

It is based on the same platform as the E90 3 Series and features the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The X1 is the first BMW X Series to be available in the sDrive trim (two-wheel drive). It was not introduced to the United States until 2012.

In 2013, the E84 X1 underwent a facelift, featuring restyled exterior and interior design elements, as well as the integration of BMW EfficientDynamics on all models. The original X1 sold 820,529 units.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-13
  • VIN: WBXHT3C34H5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: It displays a secure vehicle against rolling warning which is caused by a faulty gear selector assembly. After researching on the Internet and talking to the dealer repair specialist, this seems to be a common issue for this model and it should not have happened this early in the car (the car is only 7 yrs old and has very low mileage since it was not driven much during 3 years of covid). This is a design issue that should have been fixed or recalled by the manufacturer. It is not a normal wear and tear issue and the consumer should not be paying thousands of dollars to fix a car design issue that impacts safety.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
  • VIN: WBXHT3C35H5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: 2017 BMW X1 has a transmission warning to use parking brake because of potential hazard of car rolling away while in park. I investigated this issue and there are hundreds of thousands of people who are receiving this warning as well. This is a major safety issue for the car, the risk of it rolling or not understanding that the car is properly in park. This needs to be covered as a recall for this make and model and BMW should cover this.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
  • VIN: WBXHT3C31H5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Receiving message to secure vehicle against rolling when parking. It seems like the solution involves a $10 spring but costs $2000+ to replace. My vehicle has been serviced at the dealership consistently and has 50,530 miles on it so it has had an easy life and this seems not to be. Normal wear and tear issue.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
  • VIN: WBXHT3Z33H4
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: Secure vehicle against rolling light on was looked at by 2 independent mechanics and bmw of Wilmington saying pin breaks in shifter assembly. It’s seems to be a common issue that bmw needs to recall and fix. The 5.00-10.00 pin should not cost consumers 3000.00 to fix. The entire assembly does not need replaced. The pin needs recalled for safety purposes

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-14
  • VIN: WBXHT3C33H5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Warning light comes on stating “Secure Vehicle Against Rolling” when vehicle is in park. I called BMW and took the vehicle in the next morning. The BMW dealership stated the GEAR SELECTOR LEVER ASSEMBLY needed to be replaced and needs immediate attention. At a cost of $2,858.40. Apparently I am not the only person who feels this is a safety issue due to a manufacturing malfunction and should be repaired by BMW. The bigger problem is people are opting to ignore the warning because it’s to costly to repair and have found a way to override the warning light. This is a safety concern to the public and I hope it will be addressed in a recall. My vehicle only has 53k miles on it and has been well maintained and cared for.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-12
  • VIN: WBXHU7C3XHP

  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The vehicle has started displaying an error message when parking stating to secure the vehicle against rolling. This is due to a very common issue with a spring in the shifter needing to be replaced. Based on what I have read, the spring issue is occurring in almost all 2016 and 2017 bmw x1's. This should be a recall and not a $3k repair bill.

  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I purchased the car used in September 2023. About three months ago got the following warning "Transmission : Secure Vehicle with Parking Brake when Stationary. Consult Service Center." 2024-02-26

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
  • VIN: WBXHT3C32H5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: ALERT STATING: SECURE VEHICLE AGAINST ROLLING. This is happening when I turn on the car and when I am trying to turn off the car. Nothing happening with the car at the moment but does prevent me from turning off the car at times. It raises a concern because I don't want the car rolling into another car, building or even a person. The side mirror on the driver's side also keeps readjusting on its own which has caused issues while driving by shifting from my blindside.

  • VIN: WBXHT3C30H5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN

SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-01
  • VIN: WBXHU7C36H5
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: "SECURE VEHICLE WITH PARKING BREAK" is the error msg. This is a VERY common problem with the F48 F49 2017 BMW X1. The replacement part cost around $10. It is a very small spring deep in the center console. Dealer estimates to fix it are $2500-$3500 due to the labor cost. The is a video which explains the issue and how to replace it yourself if you are able. Some post have indicated that BMWNA will pay but there is no official recall and I am not sure if it is standard practice for the Dealer to replace the problem. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-04
  • VIN: WBXHU7C39H5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When car is in park it say something secure brake to stop from rolling , I see this is a big problem in a lot of bmw’s and this repair should be a recall for the pricey repair . I heard it’s a $10 spring in the shift box . It should be replaced by bmw
2024-01-12

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
  • VIN: WBXHT3C39H5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: During the parking of this vehicle (when you put the gearbox shifter in the P position), the iDrive system shows the following message: “Secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary. Have the problem checked by Service Partner.” This happens each and every time and also when the vehicle is parked on level ground. The error will remain even if the parking brake is applied. After turning on the engine again and putting the shifter either in R or D position, you click "OK" and the error goes away, until the next time you park it. I have found through one of the biggest BMW global forums - [XXX] that this issue is very common, and it seems that the problem most likely is either in weak design of gearbox shifter unit or in gearbox mechatronic unit and unfortunately it is common for BMW models F48, F39, F45 and F46. At the same time, BMW hasn’t announced any recall procedure, despite the fact that both of the units mentioned are quite expensive and definitely shouldn’t appear in modern cars. It also seems that the component that faults is a small spring deep inside the gear selector, that costs less than $10. There are videos on the process to replace that, but BMW dealers quote the complete replacement of the gear selector, for more than $2,000 and sometimes even up to $4,000 dollars. I feel there should be a recall. There is a law firm collecting signatures for a class action... [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
2024-01-12

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-08
  • VIN: WBXHT3C35H5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: There is a small, broken spring in my shift lever ($10 part) that makes the car think it cannot be put into park. This otherwise does not affect the operation of the vehicle, but every time I get in the car, I am greeted with a warning message to "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling" and "visit a service center". This failure is ubiquitous amongst F48 X1 cars; there are entire threads and 3rd party services to replace the small, cheap part, as opposed to a job BMW dealers try and sell you for over 2000$ to replace the entire shifter unit, which isn't the problem. A recall for this ridiculous part and design should be forced.
2024-01-11

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
  • VIN: WBXHU7C39H5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The gear box failed, the battery failed and the coolant system leaked at the same time. It is at the dealer now who has confirmed these. A vehicle dashboard light came on before this occurred to tell me to engage the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling. Where I live, there are no hills so no reason to ever engage a parking brake and this dashboard light is meaningless. However, when I noticed this light, I made an appointment with the dealership and was able to drive the car there several days later. I thought it would not be a major issue but learned it was. The car has only 65,000 miles, and I have never been in an accident with this car. It is a safety issue, as it was a major problem with no effective warning and no real explanation in the owner's manual. I was fortunate to have brought the car in. I have not received the car back yet but the cost is substantial to repair.
2023-12-29

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-28
  • VIN: WBXHT3C38H5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Car experiences a very rough idle at start and often stalls after being place in gear. This can happen after car starts moving. My wife drives this car and is experiencing regular stalls after pulling away.
2023-12-28

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-28
  • VIN: WBXHT3C34H5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Getting "Secure vehicle against rolling" warning with Transmission Error - Contact Service Center. Dealer indicated it was a faulty spring/component in the gear shift. They do not replace the spring, but the entire gear shift with a quoted repair/labor cost of $2,700. It is a sensor problem where the car cannot recognize if it is in Park. This is a common defect in the 2017 BMW X1 that occurs suddenly. BMW should issue a recall or extended warranty repair. Please investigate.

Negative 2017 Bmw X1 car reviews

  1. Randall Boehm 2024-11-16

I had a scary experience with my new 2017 X-1, which had less than 247 miles on it. While driving, I lost complete control of the vehicle and was very scared. The warning message on the screen stated 'Reinitializing stability control'. I contacted BMW North America regarding this matter. Fresno BMW repaired the car without my authorization and offered to buy it back, but only gave me a low price for it. I was not interested in buying an X-3 or X-5 as they are too big for me. I was very clear that the car was not to be repaired, and I did not sign the repair order. I am disappointed that CarFax reported no major repair on my '17. I am currently taking legal action. There is more to this story, but I am hopeful that it will be resolved soon.I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you had a great experience with your 2013 X-1 and found a 2015 model that you've been enjoying for almost two years now. That's fantastic! However, I couldn't help but notice that the new owner of your 2013 X-1 may not be aware of a major repair that was done on the vehicle. I think it would be a friendly gesture to contact the new owner and let them know the truth. It's possible that they would appreciate the information. I understand that you've been hesitant to take legal action, and that's completely understandable given the circumstances. It's important to prioritize your well-being. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. Take care!

  2. Kiel Gutmann 2024-10-23

Hey there! How about taking the car out for a day drive?

  3. Frankie Larkin 2024-09-14

Transitioning from my 328i to a 2017 X1 seemed like a logical choice for more space and comfort. However, the uncomfortable seats proved to be a huge mistake. After just 15 minutes of driving, I noticed the seat was off and it has caused me significant back pain. Despite reaching out to both the dealer and BMW corporate, I have unfortunately not received any helpful assistance. As a result, I have decided to exit my lease early and explore other make and model options.

  4. Francis Rath 2024-06-25

If your FOB battery dies, the horn will honk at the most inopportune times, such as while driving or in the middle of the night while sleeping. This can be quite bothersome for your neighbors, so be sure to replace the battery as soon as possible. Additionally, the driver's side seat belt light may come on due to a moisture issue. If you do not drive your car on a daily basis, the battery may die, so it is recommended to purchase a charger. We miss our RAV 4 for its trouble-free performance.

  5. Michel Wisozk 2024-06-02

The controls can be a bit confusing and the setup is quite complicated. Additionally, there isn't much visibility at the back.

Positive 2017 Bmw X1 car reviews

  1. Kayleigh Gleason 2024-11-27

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed the handling of the car! The interior is also quite nice, and it's great to hear that you found the cargo carrying ability to be good. I understand that the car uses premium gas, which may not be your preference, but it's worth noting that many high-end vehicles require it to achieve optimal performance.

  2. Newell Rempel 2024-11-16

We found a really nice 2017 BMW X 1 in perfect condition with only 9000 miles on it. We absolutely love it! It's our first BMW and my wife and I would definitely consider buying another one in the future.

  3. Percy Quitzon 2024-08-21

It's great to hear that you're considering a BMW for the first time! The X1 model is a perfect size for your needs, especially if you found the other X models to be too big. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  4. Dillan Paucek 2024-08-21

    I really love this car.

  5. Wiley Buckridge 2024-06-18

Great BMW on the smaller scale. My only complaint would be that the outside air noise is a bit loud at higher speeds, but this may be due to the full sunroof and shoulder room in the front seats. Perhaps making it a little wider would be a great idea for the next model.
