2019 Bmw X1 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by German marque BMW since 2009. It is in the subcompact luxury crossover class, and the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. At its introduction in 2009, it was positioned as the smallest SUV in BMW line-up, below the X3 prior to the launch of the smaller X2. The X1 essentially is aiming a wider range of customers due to its smaller size, increased efficiency, and a lower price tag due to the all-wheel drive layout (xDrive) being optional.

The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman. Despite its name, it is now only the second smallest SUV produced by BMW since the introduction of the X2. The third and current generation was released in 2022.

First generation (E84; 2009)

The E84 X1 is the first-generation model and was originally presented as the BMW Concept X1 at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. Development of the vehicle started in 2006 when BMW identified the need for a smaller and more efficient model in its SUV line-up as petrol prices were increasing. Due to the urgent need to produce the vehicle, development and pre-production time was shortened by 40 percent compared to previous X Series models.

It is based on the same platform as the E90 3 Series and features the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The X1 is the first BMW X Series to be available in the sDrive trim (two-wheel drive). It was not introduced to the United States until 2012.

In 2013, the E84 X1 underwent a facelift, featuring restyled exterior and interior design elements, as well as the integration of BMW EfficientDynamics on all models. The original X1 sold 820,529 units.

Common 2019 Bmw X1 problems

The BMW X1, a compact luxury crossover SUV, has gained popularity for its sporty design, premium features, and iconic BMW driving experience. However, like any vehicle, the BMW X1 is not without its issues. In this article, we will provide an in-depth overview of the BMW X1, discuss the ten most common problems owners encounter, and offer solutions to help you address these issues.

One of the most common problems with the BMW X1 is cooling system problems. Drivers have reported an issue with the model leaking engine coolant, which can be caused by corrosion of the cooling system components. This problem can be noticed with symptoms including a sweet smell throughout the car, an overheating engine, a puddle below the car, and the illumination of the coolant warning light. This issue can be a serious problem and can lead to irreparable engine damage if not addressed promptly.

Another common issue with the BMW X1 is engine problems, specifically with the passenger engine mount prone to cracking. This component helps to fix the engine of your car firmly to the car frame, and its damage can result in a costly repair. While the average repair cost for this problem specific to the BMW X1 is not available, prices can vary roughly from between £100 to £200, depending on the car and the extent of the repair.

Additionally, some BMW X1 models have experienced issues with the A/C and heater. BMW announced recalls on affected X1 models due to impurities in the high voltage batteries that may cause a short circuit, airbag control unit may have a faulty sensor, and possible undetected EGR system leaks. These issues can affect the model years from 2014 to 2022.

The BMW X1 has also experienced issues with its electrical system, with malfunctions in lights, power windows, and issues with the entertainment system reported. These problems may stem from faulty wiring, fuses, or control modules. To address these issues, it's essential to consult a qualified technician who is well-versed in BMW's intricate electrical systems.

Another common problem with the BMW X1 is oil pan leaks, which can be attributed to gasket failures or other engine-related issues. To address oil leaks, it's essential to have the gaskets and seals inspected and replaced as needed. Regular oil changes with high-quality oil can help maintain gasket health and prevent leaks.

Furthermore, some BMW X1 owners have experienced transmission issues, such as rough shifting or slipping. These issues can be caused by faulty transmission fluid, worn-out clutches, or sensor problems, especially in earlier models. To address these issues, it's essential to have the transmission inspected and repaired as needed.

In conclusion, while the BMW X1 is a popular and well-regarded compact luxury crossover SUV, it's not without its issues. Owners have reported problems with the cooling system, engine, A/C and heater, electrical system, and transmission. To address these issues, it's essential to consult a qualified technician and maintain regular maintenance to prevent potential problems before they worsen.

Negative 2019 Bmw X1 car reviews

  1. Royce Blick 2025-01-06

This is my first BMW and unfortunately, it will also be my last. I purchased it brand new in November 2018 and within 500 miles, I experienced a major steering issue. It took the dealership weeks to figure out and fix the problem, and during the holidays, there were no loaners available, so I had to drive a Nissan Versa that felt like it would fall apart at 55 mph. Although the issue was eventually fixed, it was a frustrating experience. The car drives fine, but I have noticed that the weatherstrip along the edge of the windshield looks like it's 10 years old after only a year. The dealer claims that it's not their problem and that it's something I've done, but I park in a garage at night and in an open parking lot at the office, and we take good care of our vehicles, so I don't believe it's something I've caused. In my opinion, the car is not worth the money, and the technology is lagging behind most competitors. Additionally, the cooling AC is not very effective. There are two vents on the dash behind the info screen that blow a lot of air, but the other vents suffer because of this, and you can literally feel the air coming out of the other front vents without it being on high. Update: I got rid of the car because it had too many problems, and I also got rid of my 2016 328. I would advise others to avoid BMWs as they are not worth the hassle.

  2. Orlo Runolfsdottir 2024-11-08

I've had this car for a week now and I'm feeling a bit of buyer's remorse. During the test drive, I didn't get to drive it for long enough. Although it seemed fine on a short drive, the model I bought is quite stiff and hard to steer. Despite having 220 horsepower, it doesn't feel as powerful as I expected, as it's not very smooth or responsive. Maybe I should have waited for the new Audi Q3 coming out this fall. I wish I had shopped around more and not relied so much on the reviews.

  3. Jules Gibson 2024-07-09

Sorry to hear that your experience with the X-1 hasn't been as great as you expected. After a year of driving, it seems to have dropped from a 9+ rating to a 6.6.

  4. Jacinto Hickle 2024-05-12

I recently purchased a brand new car with only 10,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to replace the tires already, which was surprising since they were the Pirelli P7 CINTURATO P7 ALL SEASON RUN FLAT - SIZE: 225/50R17 that came from the factory and had no warranty. Additionally, the backup camera has been giving me some trouble, possibly due to compatibility issues with Apple Car Play. Despite the dealership's efforts, the issue persists. The ride can be a bit rough, but that's to be expected with a mini SUV. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this car as it has had too many issues for a brand new vehicle and the ride quality is not up to par.

  5. Benton Doyle 2024-02-02

This luxury SUV boasts poor AC and heating? Not on my watch. I've shopped twice for tailgate and battery problems, and I can confidently say that this vehicle is top-notch.

Positive 2019 Bmw X1 car reviews

  3. Buford Schuster 2024-11-13

Congratulations on your purchase of a used 2019 BMW X1! It's a great first car that not only boasts impressive crash ratings, but also the latest technology and a stunning interior. We hope you enjoy every moment behind the wheel!

  4. Korey Bernier 2024-11-02

I drove this car for 2 hours and enjoyed it for the most part. It had really nice features and a smooth ride. Although the brakes were very sensitive, I believe that is something that can be easily fixed by the dealer. Overall, it's a good car.

  5. Otho Hammes 2024-10-22

I'm glad to hear that you're happy with the car!
