The BMW M4 is a version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Upgrades over the standard BMW 4 Series include an upgraded engine, suspension, exhaust system, brakes and weight reduction measures including increased use of carbon fibre, such as on the roof of the car.

First generation (F82/F83; 2014)

On 25 September 2013, BMW released the technical specifications of the M4. It is powered by the S55B30 engine, which is developed and engineered by BMW M GmbH. This 3.0-litre inline-6 engine has been built specifically for the new M4/M3, having a redline of 7,600 rpm with the rev limiter actuated at 7,300 rpm. The engine uses two mono-scroll turbochargers with a peak boost pressure of 18.1 psi (1.2 bar). The power is rated at 317 kW (431 PS; 425 hp), however this is achieved not at a specific engine speed, but is instead rated throughout the range of 5,500–7,300 rpm. The engine's torque is rated at 550 N⋅m (406 lbf⋅ft) throughout the range of 1,850–5,500. Two transmission choices are available, the 6-speed manual and the 7-speed M-DCT transmissions. The 7-speed M-DCT transmission accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds) and the 6-speed manual transmission from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds. The weight of the European specification M4 equipped with a manual transmission is 1,572 kg (3,466 lb) and with the M-DCT dual-clutch transmission, the car is some 40 kg (88 lb) heavier, losing some 80 kg (176 lb) as compared to the E92 M3.

As per its E92 predecessor, the roof of the coupe model is constructed from carbon fibre (except if the optional sunroof is fitted). Carbon fibre is also used for the bootlid and engine brace. For the first time in a M3/M4 model, an electric power steering unit is used. The steering system is specifically tuned for both the M3 and M4, however it has been criticised for lacking in feel. The 18 inches (460 mm) and 19 inches (480 mm) wheel options are available with lightweight forged alloy wheels being standard. The M compound brakes come standard (with blue brake calipers), while carbon ceramic brakes (with gold brake calipers) are available as an option.

The M4 features Active Sound, live amplification of the engine's natural sound inducted into the passenger cabin via speakers in the car. BMW claims this technology has been used so that the well insulated cabin can reduce road/wind noise but still provide the driver with the sporty sound of the M powered engine. There are no artificial sound or any pre-recorded track in the system. This system was first implemented in the M5 (F10).

The M4 is based on the F32 4 Series however 50 percent of its components are unique as compared to the 4 Series.

The convertible variant of the M4 was announced along with its coupe sibling, also internally known as F82 or F83 M4. It shares almost everything with the coupé version, but weighs more due to its folding metal roof. The convertible weighs 1,750 kg (3,858 lb) (manual), 1,691 kg (3,728 lb) (M-DCT). The three-piece retractable hardtop folds in 20 seconds. The only significant difference between the two is the weight due to its retractable hardtop. Like its hardtop counterpart, the F83 M4 uses carbon fibre reinforced plastic to lighten and stiffen the car.

Because of its extra weight it accelerates slower, taking it 0.3 seconds longer to 100 km/h (62 mph); 4.6 seconds with the manual and 4.3 seconds with the M-DCT transmission. The dynamic differences between the two variants are marginally small.

Starting from the 2019 model year (production from 07/2018 onward) BMW removed the carbon fibre driveshaft so as to be able to fit an Otto Particulate Filter (OPF), necessary to comply with WLTP emissions regulations and this also meant that the M Performance Exhaust was no longer able to be offered on these cars by BMW.

If I am unable to utilize the instrument cluster display it puts myself and others in harms way as if there is an issue with the vehicle or a warning, I would be unaware as there is no way for that information to reach me. The issue has been confirmed with a code of : B7f694 The display back lighting has failed. BMW states this out of their warranty/workmanship coverage. Leading up to the display failure, the display would cut in and out.

  • Summary: The BMW OEM intercooler/charge air cooler is a known faulty equipment issue within this generation of cars/engine (S55 Engine, F80, F82, F87 chassis) and I have thousands of people within the community that were affected and willing to attest to this. This issue is a safety risk as having the intercooler leak coolant into the combustion chambers this will be a catastrophically damage the engine. As I've mentioned this problem has been confirmed by dealers and independent service centers, and I have thousands of people in the willing to attest to this being a very common issue in this generation of cars. There is usually supposed to be a service warning/check engine light that comes up on the car when there is a coolant leak, I received nothing. The symptoms I've experienced are as the following: My radiator fans kept coming on after drives, I had to physically check that coolant was in fact leaking and the reservoir being bone dry within days, I scanned my vehicle for codes and of course the coolant leak code came back.

  • Summary: I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE ON MARCH 10, 2020 FOR SERVICING. DURING THE TIME THEY HAD MY CAR, THEY REPLACED MY FRONT AND REAR BRAKE PADS, COMPLETED THE INSPECTION, AND GAVE ME THE CAR BACK AFTER A COUPLE DAYS. ON APRIL 10, 2020, I TOOK MY CAR INTO SERVICE AGAIN AS I WAS HAVING DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTIONS CONSTANTLY. SEVERAL WEEKS OF BEING IN THE SHOP, BMW SERVICE TECHNICIANS FOUND THAT COOLING FLUIDS HAD LEAKED FROM MY TOP MOUNTED INTERCOOLER, INTO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND THROUGH THE INTAKE VALVES, AND DIRECTLY INTO THE ENGINE OF MY VEHICLE. SINCE THE ENGINE NOW NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, BMW OF FREMONT RECOMMENDED AND REQUESTED FOR AN ENGINE REPLACEMENT BUT BMW HAD REJECTED IT AND STATED THAT THEY FOUND SOME 'TUNE' IN THE VEHICLE. I PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE PLAN FROM BMW DIRECTLY THAT IS STILL ACTIVE. MY ENGINE REPLACEMENT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT BMW IS NOT ADHERING TO THAT WARRANTY. AFTER COUNTLESS CALLS AND EMAILS BEING SENT BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN ME AND BMW, NEW INFORMATION AROSE STATING THAT BMW FOUND THAT THE 'TUNE' FOUND IN MY VEHICLE WAS MERELY A VALVE CONTROLLER FOR MY EXHAUST SYSTEM. BMW OF FREMONT CLEARLY MENTIONED TO BMW THAT THIS LEAK IS NOT CAUSED BY OR EVEN REMOTELY CORRELATED TO THE VALVE CONTROLLER, AND THAT THIS ISSUE IS MECHANICAL, NOT SOFTWARE RELATED. CLEARLY, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MAJOR ISSUE AT HAND, WHICH IS THE LEAKING INTERCOOLER CAUSING MY ENGINE TO FAIL. IT'S A COMMON FAILURE ON THESE CARS AND WOULD LIKE NHTSA TO RECALL THIS COMMON PROBLEM THAT'S BEEN HAPPENING SINCE 2015. WHEN THE CRANK HUB FAILS FROM TIMING GOING OFF COUNTLESS ISSUES CAN ARISE WHICH CAN CAUSE ENGINE TO BE REPLACED WHICH IS A VERY COSTLY REPAIR. IT WOULD A PIECE OF MIND TO HAVE THE F80/F82/ F83 RECALLED IT WOULD BE A PIECE OF MIND FOR OUR COMMUNITY. NOW HOW IT HAPPENED WAS, I WAS DRIVING ONE NIGHT COMING FROM WORK AROUND 7:30 PM ON THE HIGHWAY I WAS EXITING THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE THAT WAS THE EXIT FOR ME TO GET OFF TO HEAD HOME SO I DOWNSHIFTED, CAR REV MATCHED AUTOMATICALLY IN SPORT MODE AND NEXT THING I KNOW I HEAR A POP NOISE. THE CAR SHUTS OFF WHILE ROLLING ON THE OFF RAMP, LUCKY I WAS SLOWING DOWN ALREADY HEADING TO A STOP I ROLLED OFF TO THE SIDE AND HAD CAR TOWED TO A GERMAN ENGINEERING SHOP. THE NEXT MORNING I WENT TO THE SHOP TO HEAR WHAT WAS THE ISSUES, THE CRANK HUB SPUN WHICH MEANS THE TIMING WAS THROWN OFF BY A LITTLE. THAT COST WAS OVER 3K TO FIX. THIS HAPPENED LAST WEEK ON THURSDAY DECEMBER 12TH, 2019. SO THE CAR IS STILL BEING FIXED, THERE WERE OTHER CARS THERE GETTING CRANK HUB FIXED FOR EITHER PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE OR THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED TO MINE. BUT I'LL BE GETTING MY CAR BY THE WEEKEND I WAS TOLD. I WILL POST DOCUMENTATION/ PICTURES WITH ANOTHER FORM ONCE CAR IS FINISHED. I DO PLAN TO BUY ANOTHER F80 OR F82 AS A GIFT FOR MY MOTHER BUT THIS ISSUE I HEAR HAPPENING EVERYDAY MAKES ME HESITANT TO GET ANOTHER ONE.. THE ISSUE IS SEEN ON WHITE OR LIGHT COLOR VEHICLES WHEN THE LIGHT FROM THE LICENSE PLATE REFLECT ON THE BUMPER CAUSING THE CAMERA NOT TO FOCUS PROPERLY. WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS ARE TURNED OFF AND THE LICENSE PLATE LIGHTS TURN OFF THE REAR VIEW CAMERA HAS A BETTER VIEW. TURNING OFF THE HEADLIGHTS AT NIGHT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND NOT BEING ABLE TO DISTINGUISH OBJECTS AT NIGHT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS WELL. PLEASE ASK BMW TO CORRECT. I HAVE A COUPLE OF OPTIONS THAT I CAN SUGGEST BUT WILL DEFER TO THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE FINAL SOLUTION.

The head air bag inflator may fail at the weld joint, which can cause gas to leak from the inflator or result in an inflator rupture.
  • Consequence: An inflator that ruptures may cause sharp metal fragments to enter or exit the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, an inflator that leaks gas may only partially inflate during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Dealers will replace the head air bags, free of charge. Letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed June 20, 2024. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed the end of October 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

  • Summary: BMW North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016 BMW M2 Coupe vehicles, 2015-2017 M3 Sedan vehicles and 2015-2016 M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible vehicles. During servicing of the rear differential for a prior service action, the rear sub-frame bolts may have been reused instead of being replaced. Reuse of the existing bolts may cause the bolts to loosen.
  • Consequence: Loose rear sub-frame bolts may adversely affect vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear sub-frame bolts with new bolts, free of charge. The recall began on November 3, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

  • Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 M3 Sedan vehicles manufactured May 30, 2015, to September 2, 2015, 2016 M4 Coupe vehicles manufactured July 3, 2015, to September 11, 2015, and 2015-2016 M4 Convertible vehicles manufactured May 29, 2015, to August 4, 2015. The affected vehicles have a driveshaft with a slip-joint that may not have been filled with grease. As a result, the slip-joint may fail over time.
  • Consequence: If the slip-joint fails, there would be a loss of power to the rear axle and therefore the vehicle would stop moving, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driveshaft, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 14, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Additionally, the interior cabin can be quite noisy, and the lettering or logo is too small to read easily. It can be a bit confusing to navigate the entertainment display, and it's important to be careful not to spill food or drink near the buttons next to the transmission shifter. Changing headlight bulbs can also be a bit tricky. Unfortunately, after only 35,655 miles, there was an oil leak at the turbo, which was expensive to repair. The warranty only covers 4 years, which is typical for cheaper made parts. There were also several error codes, including a check engine code, cas system code, headlight code, alarm code, and zgm code. Repairing all of these problems cost $8756.00.

I can say this with confidence because I own two: a 2015 M-4 convertible in Marina blue (which is absolutely stunning) and a 2018 YELLOW M-4 Competition convertible. Both of these cars turn heads and I love them both. If you buy one, you'll see why I own two!
