The BMW E38 is the third generation of the BMW 7 Series luxury cars and was produced from 1994 until 2001. The E38 replaced the E32 7 Series and was produced with petrol and turbo-diesel straight-six and V8 engines, along with a petrol V12 flagship model. Three wheelbase lengths were available — short (i), long (iL) and Limousine (L7).

The E38 was the first car available with curtain airbags. It was also the first European car to offer satellite navigation and the first BMW to offer an in-built television. The E38 was the first 7 Series to be available with a diesel engine and the last to be available with a manual transmission.

In 2001, the E38 was replaced by the E65 7 Series.

Common 1990 Bmw 750il problems

The BMW 750iL, produced in 1990, is a luxury sedan that has been known for a few common problems based on complaints from its owners. The thrust rod, also known as the track rod, is a component of the steering system that connects the steering gearbox to the front wheels. The bushings are designed to reduce friction and wear between the thrust rod and the vehicle's chassis. When these bushings fail, they can cause a variety of problems, including excessive play in the steering, noise while turning, and even premature tire wear.

Another common problem with the BMW 750iL is related to its electronic throttle control system

. This system uses electronic sensors and actuators to control the throttle position, replacing the traditional mechanical linkage between the gas pedal and the throttle body. In some cases, this system can fail, causing the car to go into "limp mode" or reducing its acceleration capabilities. This issue can be particularly challenging to diagnose and repair, as it may involve multiple electronic components, including the gas pedal, throttle bodies, and various control modules.

While not directly related to the 1990 BMW 750iL, it is worth mentioning that BMW had a secret V-16 engine project in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which resulted in the assembly of two one-off cars known internally as the "Goldfish" or "Super Seven". These cars featured a 6.6-liter V-16 engine adapted from the V-12 used in the 750i E32. While these projects did not directly affect the 750iL, they demonstrate BMW's engineering capabilities and willingness to push the boundaries of automotive technology during that time period.

In summary, the BMW 750iL has been known for issues such as front thrust rod bushing failure and electronic throttle control system problems. These issues can affect the car's handling, performance, and overall drivability, and may require professional diagnosis and repair.
