1994 Nissan Altima problems
The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.
The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth-generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth-generation Altima.
The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models for the North American market were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

Common 1994 Nissan Altima problems
The 1994 Nissan Altima is known for a few common problems that car owners have reported over the years. These issues include road noises, door locking mechanisms, door closing force, air conditioning performance, and transmission replacement.
- Door locking mechanisms: The 1994 Nissan Altima's door locking mechanisms can sometimes be problematic. Some owners have reported that only the door being unlocked unlocks, which doesn't make sense for a car with electric door locks. This issue can be caused by a disconnected wire or a malfunctioning door lock actuator. A quick fix might involve checking the wiring connections and replacing the faulty actuator if necessary. However, if this is a common issue with the Altima, it might be worth considering a modification to improve the door locking system's reliability.
- Door closing force: The driver side door of the 1994 Nissan Altima may require more force than usual to close. This issue can be caused by a thicker door seal, which might have been replaced with an aftermarket part. The owner in the case described noticed a large gap when the door was not fully closed. The solution in this case was to replace the thicker door seal with a thinner one or to adjust the door's latch mechanism to accommodate the thicker seal.
- Air conditioning performance: Some owners have reported that the air conditioning system in the 1994 Nissan Altima blows cold air only when the car is accelerating. Once the car stops at a light, the air temperature decreases from cold to cool. This issue can be caused by a worn-out compressor, low refrigerant levels, or a faulty expansion valve. The owner in the case described noticed that the AC was full and had put an extra charge in, but the compressor might still be worn out. Worn compressors are a common problem in many cars, including the Altima.
- Transmission replacement: The 1994 Nissan Altima's transmission can sometimes fail, requiring replacement. In the case described, the transmission had already been replaced when the owner bought the car at 107,000 miles. Transmission failure can be caused by various factors, such as low fluid levels, worn-out clutch plates, or internal damage due to overheating. Regular maintenance and fluid checks can help prevent transmission failure, but sometimes a replacement is necessary due to the car's age and mileage.
These common problems with the 1994 Nissan Altima are based on complaints from car owners and can help potential buyers or current owners understand what to expect from this car. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring the car's longevity and reliability.

- Summary: MY CAR IS A 1994 NISSAN ALTIMA 4 DOOR WITH 107,000, AND NO PREVIOUS MECHANICAL ISSUES EVER. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF NISSAN OWNERS OUT THERE EXPERIENCING THIS SAME ISSUE, WHY HAS NISSAN DONE NOTHING TO HELP? I FEEL THIS PROBLEM COULD BECOME A SAFETY HAZARD AS THE CAR RANDOMLY STALLS IN TRAFFIC. 1) THERE WERE NO EVENTS LEADING UP TO THIS FAILURE. THE PROBLEM BEGAN ABOUT 7 DAYS AGO ON APRIL 19, 2010. 2) THE FAILURE IS IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET. THE CAR SHAKES VIOLENTLY AT IDLING (BETWEEN 0-1RPM) AND UPON APPLYING GAS, TREMBLES TO GET GOING. WHEN EVER CAR GETS BELOW 1RPM, IT WILL BEGIN TO TREMBLE AGAIN. THE CAR IS HAVING A VERY DIFFICULT TIME STARTING AS WELL AS GETTING POWER TO DRIVE. THE CAR STALLS SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT WILL START. THIS IS THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR. 3) TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM, I WILL REPLACE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET, WHICH IS IN THE AREA OF $600-1000. I KNOW THAT THIS ISSUE IS DEEP ROOTED BECAUSE MY CAR IS UP TO DATE ON TUNE-UPS, OIL CHANGES, NEW SPARK PLUGS, EVERYTHING ELSE RUNS GREAT UNTIL THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED. *TR

- Summary: I OWN A 1994 NISSAN ALTIMA. IN DECEMBER 2006, THE DRIVER'S SIDE SUNVISOR MALFUNCTIONED AND DROPPED DOWN BLOCKING THE DRIVER'S VIEW OF THE ROAD. FORTUNATELY, THIS DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. ON DEC 21, 2006, THE MALFUNCTIONING SUNVISOR WAS REPLACED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE ($113.65). AROUND AUGUST 2008, THE REPLACEMENT SUNVISOR FELL OUT OF IT'S HOLDER AND BRACKET INTO THE DRIVER'S LAP WHILE DRIVING. THE OWNER FIXED IT SO IT WOULD NOT FALL OUT AGAIN. HOWEVER, IN OCT 2008, THE REPLACEMENT SUNVISOR WOULD NO LONGER STAY UP. AGAIN IT SWUNG DOWN INTO THE VIEW OF THE DRIVER WHILE DRIVING. AGAIN, IT WAS FORTUNATE THAT THIS DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AND BASED ON ON-LINE POSTS IT IS A COMMON THEME AMONG NISSAN VEHICLES. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL NISSAN SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR A REPLACEMENT AND THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE IT OR GIVE ME A DISCOUNT SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED OVER 12 MONTHS AGO. NEXT WEEK, I WILL FILE A COMPLAINT WITH NISSAN CORPORATE OFFICES. HOWEVER, BASED ON THEIR LACK OF RESPONSE TO OTHER ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE, I DO NOT EXPECT THEM TO RESOLVE IT TO MY SATISFACTION. *TR

ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, THE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY, NOR, DID THE SEAT BELT LOCK UP AS DESIGNED. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALER, AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD REPLACE BOTH ITEMS, BUT, I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM. I EXPLAINED THAT WITH BOTH SAFETY ITEMS NOT WORKING, THIS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. THEY STATED THAT EVEN THOUGH IT IS A SAFETY ITEM, IT IS ONLY COVERED FOR THE NEW CAR WARRANTY PERIOD. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 105,490 MILES ON IT, AND HAS HAD ONLY ONE OWNER SINCE NEW. I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT THERE ARE MANY 1994 - 1997 ALTIMA'S WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, AND ALTHOUGH WE CURRENTLY HAVE SEAT BELT LAWS IN TEXAS, I AM SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING TAKING THE RISK OF NOT UTILIZING THIS SYSTEM. PLEASE INVESTIGATE. VIN CAN BE PROVIDED IF NEEDED.. THANKS. *NM
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-04-01
- VIN: 1N4BU31D5RC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: MY 94 NISSAN ALTIMA SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED WAS SOMETIME IN APRIL OF 2004. WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP SIGN THE CAR STARTED JURKING AND THE ENGINE DIED. I STARTED THE CAR UP AGAIN AND KEPT ON DRIVING FOR ABOUT 1/2 A MILE (I DROVE FOR ABOUT 10 MILES PRIOR TO THIS CAR FAILURE AND THAN AFTER THE CAR WAS PARKED IDLE FOR ABOUT 5 HOURS I DROVE BACK HOME FOR 12 MILES WITH NO PROBLEMS). WHILE DRIVING TO SCHOOL A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER FOR ABOUT 8 MILES I SLOWED DOWN TO TAKE AN EXIT OF A HIGHWAY AND THE CAR STARTED JURKING AND THE ENGINE STALLED OUT AND DIED I RESTARTED THE CAR AND DROVE FOR ANOTHER 3 MILES WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. THE CAR WAS THEN PARKED FOR 7 HOURS WHILE I WAS IN SCHOOL AND I DROVE BACK HOME 12 MILES WITH NO PROBLEMS. MY BROTHER IN LAW DECIDED TO TAKE THE CAR TO WORK AND HE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM TWICE ON TWO SEPERATE DAYS IN ABOUT THE SAME DISTANCE(8-10 MILES). I DROVE THE CAR TO A MECHANIC BUT HE COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND WAS RELUCTENT IN TRYING TO FIND THE CAUSE TO THE PROBLEM. NEVERTHELESS, HE REPLACED THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND THE DISTRIBUTOR ROTOR. I KEPT THE CAR RUNNING IN MY PARKING LOT AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. THE CAR RAN FINE FOR 3 HOURS THEN THE ENGINE STARTED JURKING IN BETWEEN 2000RPM AND 3000RPM AND THE ENGINE DIED. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT RAN FOR ANOTHER 20MIN AND IT DIED AGAIN AND WOULD NOT RESTART FOR ANOTHER SEVERAL HOURS. I DROVE TO DIFFERENT SHOPS BUT NO MECHANIC WANTED TO TACKLE THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THE PROBLEM IS HARD TO FIND. SOME MECHANICS MADE SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT MIGHT BE WRONG. SO I REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER THE FUEL PUMP AND THE ALTERNATOR AND I STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. IF YOU HAVE ANY REMEDY FOR THIS PROBLEM PLEASE LET ME KNOW.THANKS. THE MANUFACTURER OF THE CAR IS NISSAN MOTOR CORPORATION U.S.A GARDENA, CALIFIRNIA. THIS MANUFACTURER WAS NOT IN THE DROP DOWN MENU.

NISSAN HAS DEVELOPED A NEW PASSENGER AIR BAG THAT IS LESS POWERFUL WHEN IT INFLATES IN A CRASH TO REDUCE THE RISK OF AIR BAG INFLATION-RELATED INJURIES.
- Consequence: NISSAN EXPECTS THAT THIS NEW AIR BAG CAN HELP REDUCE THE RISK OF AIR BAG INFLATION-RELATED INJURIES.
- Remedy: NISSAN WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG AT NO CHARGE TO THE CONSUMER. THE MANUFACTURER HAS REPORTED THAT OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 28, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: ENGINE MOVEMENT CAN BE TRANSMITTED TO THE AIRFLOW METER/FILTER HOUSING AND SUPPORT BRACKET, WHICH IS MOUNTED IN THE ENGINE AIR DUCT, CAUSING THE THROTTLE CABLE HOUSING TO PULL OUT OF THE CABLE GUIDE. THIS MAY PREVENT THE THROTTLE FROM RETURNING TO THE IDLE POSITION WHEN THE GAS PEDAL IS RELEASED.
- Consequence: IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, LOSS OF THROTTLE CONTROL COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: NISSAN WILL REPOSITION THE THROTTLE CABLE HOUSING IN THE SUPPORT BRACKET TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SLACK FOR ENGINE MOVEMENT. A RUBBER STOPPER WILL BE CLAMPED TO THE CABLE TO MAINTAIN THE CORRECT POSITION FOR THE CABLE AT THE SUPPORT BRACKET. IN ADDITION, THE THROTTLE CABLE WILL BE TESTED FOR PULL OUT RESISTANCE FROM THE GUIDE IN THE EVENT THE CABLE WAS DAMAGED. THE THROTTLE ASSEMBLY WILL BE REPLACED, IF NECESSARY.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Nissan Altima. I bought it for $1500 a year ago with 170,000 miles on it, and it's been such a great investment. Even after putting 20,000 miles on it, it still runs like a dream. I've taken it on 300+ mile trips and it's been so dependable. I even added some personal touches to it, like chrome wheels (similar to the ones offered on late model factory Altimas) and a PolkMOMO sound system. I think it looks awesome with the new cloth on the rear deck to display the PolkMOMO speakers, and I even have PolkMOMO decals on the windshield and rear window. The interior is amazing for a '94 model, with a good-looking dash. The only downside is that the seats aren't the most comfortable for long trips, but the upholstery cleans really easily. Thanks for listening to my story!

I got the car with 54,000 miles on it and have owned it for three years now. It now has over 90,000 miles on it and is still going strong. During one period, I put over 8,000 miles on it driving across the country in less than a month and never had one problem with it. Just keep putting gas in it and you're on your way. I would highly recommend it to anyone considering buying.

We have two GXEs which were purchased new a month apart in 1993. Both have 193,000 plus miles. Although several parts have been repaired/replaced (e.g. CV joints, climate control system, A/C condenser, knock sensor, head gasket, engine oil leak (common occurrence) blower motor, both vehicles have served us VERY well and have been maintained likewise. We hope to continue driving these cars for as long as possible. These Altimas have exceeded our expectations. Regrettably, the newer models are engineered to make the consumer more dealer-dependent for maintenance and repair. People are often surprised at the age of the vehicles (nearly 16 years) because they have retained their new-car appearance.
-
This car has been very dependable since day one when I acquired it. I love all the loaded options in the GLE model - 6 speakers, leather interior, sliding sunroof, anti-theft deterrent system, and great sound system, to name a few. It also has master power control on the driver's side and provides good gas mileage. I have only had to perform regular maintenance and have not had to replace anything major. I highly recommend it!

I'm glad to say that I've had very few issues with this car, beyond the usual maintenance. Despite being 11 years old and having covered around 165,000 miles, it's still going strong! While there are some oil leaks from various parts of the engine, I haven't experienced any other problems. The most expensive repair I've had to make that wasn't part of normal maintenance was the wiper motor. On the highway, I get around 28 mpg, which is great. However, I do find that my legs and back can get uncomfortable after driving for an hour. Additionally, the placement of the power/lighter socket is not ideal - it's right under the cupholder, which means that your cup can end up resting on whatever you have plugged in. Finally, the trunk opening is oddly shaped, which can make it difficult to fit larger items through the opening. While I personally don't find the styling to be very attractive, I understand that this is a matter of personal preference.

I purchased my Nissan 18 months ago with slightly less than 100K miles on it. Although I had some issues with the alternator, starter, and distributor, I was able to get them fixed in a timely manner. Despite the repairs, I still believe that the car was worth the initial investment of $4600. I have put in an additional $2500 over the past year and a half, but I am confident that the car will continue to serve me well.
