1995 Toyota Tercel problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Tercel (Japanese: トヨタ・ターセル, Toyota Tāseru) is a subcompact car manufactured by Toyota from 1978 until 1999 across five generations, in five body configurations sized between the Corolla and the Starlet. Manufactured at the Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Japan, and sharing its platform with the Cynos (aka Paseo) and the Starlet, the Tercel was marketed variously as the Toyota Corolla II (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラII, Toyota Karōra II) — sold at Toyota Japanese dealerships called Toyota Corolla Stores — and was replaced by the Platz in 1999. It was also known as the Toyota Corsa (Japanese: トヨタ・コルサ, Toyota Korusa) and sold at Toyopet Store locations. Starting with the second generation, the Tercel dealership network was changed to Vista Store, as its badge engineered sibling, the Corolla II, was exclusive to Corolla Store locations.

The Tercel was the first front-wheel drive vehicle produced by Toyota, although it was the only front-wheel drive Toyota to have a longitudinally mounted engine. For example, the E80 series Corolla's frame (except AE85 and AE86) is similar to the L20 series Tercel's frame. Also, Toyota designed the A series engine for the Tercel, attempting simultaneously to achieve good fuel economy and performance and low emissions. Choice of body styles increased as well, with the addition of a four-door sedan.

The name "Tercel" was derived from the Latin word for "one third", with "tiercel" referring to a male falcon which is one-third smaller than its female counterpart. Similarly, the Tercel was slightly smaller than the Corolla. The early Tercels have a logo on the trunk with a stylized falcon as the T in Tercel. All Tercels were assembled at the Takaoka factory in Toyota City, Aichi or by Hino Motors in Hamura, Tokyo. Hino assembled the third generation Tercel from 1986 to 1990 for the two-door and some three-door models. When Japanese production of the Tercel/Corsa/Corolla II (and the related Cynos/Paseo coupés) came to an end in 1999, 4,968,935 examples had been built.

Common 1995 Toyota Tercel problems

The Toyota Tercel is known for its reliability, but like any vehicle, it can have its fair share of problems. Here are some common issues reported by owners of the 1995 Toyota Tercel, based on search results:

  • Transmission Problems: Some owners reported problems with the automatic transmission, such as the transmission failing to shift properly or slipping. Others reported issues with the manual transmission becoming difficult to shift or the clutch wearing out quickly.
  • Brake System Failures: Some owners reported issues with the brake system, such as the brakes failing to engage properly or the brake pads or shoes wearing out quickly.
  • Electrical Issues: Some owners reported electrical issues, such as the car's electrical system failing or the headlights flickering or failing to turn on.
  • Suspension System Problems: Some owners reported problems with the car's suspension system, such as the suspension wearing out quickly or the car handling poorly on the road.
  • Starting Problems: Some owners reported starting problems, such as the car not starting after long periods of non-use or after long trips.

These issues can be addressed by taking appropriate steps to maintain the reliability and safety of the vehicle. For example, regular maintenance such as checking and changing the engine oil, transmission fluid, and brake fluid can help prevent some of these issues. Additionally, addressing any electrical issues promptly can prevent further damage to the car's electrical system.

It's important to note that while these issues are common, they are not necessarily indicative of a widespread problem with the Toyota Tercel. Many of these issues can be addressed with regular maintenance and repairs. However, if a problem persists, it's important to seek professional help to diagnose and address the issue.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-05-15
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: MY 1995 TOYOTA TERCEL EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN ACCELERATION EPISODE NEARLY 2 YEARS AGO. I WAS ENTERING A MAIN ROAD WHEN I NOTICED THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE. I REPEATEDLY PRESSED THE BRAKE, BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND. FORTUNATELY, THERE WERE NO OTHER VEHICLES AROUND ME AT THE TIME, AND WHEN I TOTALLY REALIZED THAT THE SPEED WAS INCREASING FROM ABOUT 30 MPH TO ABOUT 45 OR 50 MPH, AND I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, I PUT IN PARK, (IT HAS AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) IT MADE A STRONG NOISE, AND THE CAR SUDDENLY HALTED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AT LEAST TWO CAR SHOPS AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. WHAT HAPPENED TO ME WAS EXACTLY AS IS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALLS. AND ALMOST TWO YEARS LATER I STILL FEEL INSECURE DRIVING ANY CAR, AND REMEMBERING WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY AND I HOPE IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN. BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE, I'M SURE THE PROBLEM IS BIGGER THAN IT IS PORTRAYED NOW, AND IT MAY EXTEND TO MANY MORE VEHICLES AND MODELS. PLEASE INVESTIGATE. THANKS. *TR

I PRESSED ON THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD BUT IT DID NOT STOP IT, SO I PULLED UP THE HAND BRAKE BUT NOT BEFORE I HAD HIT THE REAR BUMPER OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS TICKETED FOR FOLLOWING TOO CLOSE WHICH WAS NOT THE CASE. I EXPLAINED TO THE OFFICER WHAT HAPPENED WHEN MY GAS PEDAL UNEXPECTEDLY CAUSED TO CAR TO ACCELERATE BUT ALL HE SAID IS THAT I BETTER GET IT FIXED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY FIXED IT, BUT MY CAR INSURANCE WENT UP, AS WELL AS THE DEDUCTIBLE I HAD TO PAY TO GET MY CAR FIXED AND REPAIR THE OTHER GENTLEMAN'S CAR. AT THE TIME I DIDN'T CONSIDER THAT IT WAS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT BUT NOW I KNOW IT MIGHT WELL COULD HAVE BEEN. MY MOM HAD GIVEN ME THE CAR TO DRIVE AFTER SHE COULD NOT DRIVE IT ANY MORE, AND SHE DIED NOT TOO LONG THEREAFTER. I NOW HAVE OVER 210,000 MILES ON THE CAR AND IT HAS BEEN A PRETTY GOOD CAR, EXCEPT FOR THAT ONE INCIDENT. THANKS.

Positive 1995 Toyota Tercel car reviews

  1. Joaquin Larson 2024-11-16

The pick up is a bit slow when starting from a stop, but once you get going, it moves smoothly. The car also shifts gears seamlessly, without the need to come to a complete stop. However, I have noticed that when reducing speed from 55 or higher, there is some slight shimmying or bumping in the front of the car.

  2. Roderick Trantow 2024-10-18

I bought this car used 7 years ago and it still runs like a charm with 122,000 miles on it. It has never let me down, even though I've put it through a lot. I only had to replace the original battery and brakes recently. I'm so impressed with Toyota that I don't think I'll ever trust any other brand. I hope my next Toyota is just as great as this one!

  3. Nolan Considine 2024-10-10

I'm glad you're considering this car! It has great consumer ratings and is known for its reliability, which is always a plus. If you come across a good used one, I would definitely recommend grabbing it. It's a fantastic car for the price.

  4. Frederic Frami 2024-10-05

I see that you bought this car for $6k in 1998 when it had 50k miles on it. Now, it has run for 130k miles and you haven't had to make any repairs or even tune it up. That's impressive! You're still getting 31 mpg (9 gal every 2 wks on a 20 miles/day fwy commute) which is great. You've only had to replace the battery once and the tires twice. You change the oil every 15k miles. The low-speed acceleration seems good for a small car, but high-speed acceleration is only so-so. However, it's a good climber and runs I-5 left lane through Grapevine. I understand that it's starting to show its age - eating oil, brakes, and barely passing the last smog test. It's a shame that they don't make this model anymore - you would buy it if they did.

  5. Kole Gleichner 2024-09-29

I absolutely agree that it's a shame Toyota stopped producing this fantastic little car! I purchased it with 70,000 miles on the clock and have since added another 40,000 miles without any issues. The car runs smoothly and is both economical and reliable. Despite being a small car, it's relatively roomy, which is great for me as I'm 6'3'' and still find it comfortable to drive when my kids aren't using it. Although the cabin can be a little noisy, I really appreciate the car's dependability. I paid a premium price for it when I bought it used, but it was definitely a worthwhile investment. I've gone through two sets of tires and two kids with this car, and have only needed to perform normal maintenance. I would definitely buy another one without any reservations - it's a great little car!
