The Audi S4 is the high performance variant of Audi's compact executive car A4. The original Audi S4, built from 1991 until 1994, was a performance-oriented version of Audi's 100 saloon/sedan. All subsequent S4s since 1997 have been based on the Audi A4; and as the A4 has evolved from one generation to the next, so has the S4.
Like its regular A4 counterpart, all S4 variants have had longitudinally oriented, front-mounted engines. All versions of the S4 have their transmission mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle, and like all Audi "S" cars, are only available as standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system, using a Torsen-based centre differential system. A more powerful internal combustion engine, larger upgraded brakes, firmer suspension, larger wheels, and distinctive sheetmetal, styling clues and badging have always been amongst the many upgrades the S4 receives over its mainstream 100 and A4 siblings. In markets where the even higher-performance Audi RS 4 is not offered, the S4 is the top-of-the-line trim of the A4 family.
A single turbocharged 2.2-litre inline five-cylinder powered the original C4 version, and a 2.7-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine was found in the B5 generation. The B6 and B7 versions shared a common 4.2-litre V8 engine, the first time that a V8 engine was placed in a compact executive car, placing it in direct competition with the BMW M3 (3.2 L inline 6) and Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG (3.2-litre supercharged V6). The B8 generation uses a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine and competed with the BMW 335i, BMW 335i/340i xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz C350. The current B9 generation is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, with rivals including the BMW M340i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG/Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC.
All versions of the S4 have been manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are, or have been available as a four-door five-seat saloon and a five-door five-seat Avant (Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon) body styles since the model's inception in 1991. A two-door four-seat Cabriolet (convertible) S4 variant was introduced as part of the B6 and B7 generation A4 lineups. The B8 Cabriolet has now been built off the A5 coupe body style and the "S" variant is marketed under the Audi S5 nameplate.

(Audi) is recalling certain 2021-2022 AUDI A8, A6 Allroad, E-TRON Quattro, 2022 S3, RSQ8, RS7, RS6 Avant, Q8, Q7, Q3, E-TRON Sportback Quattro, S5 Cabriolet, E-TRON GT, S5 Sportback, A7, A6, A5 Sportback, A5 Cabriolet, A4, A4 Allroad, A3, S8, SQ7, SQ8, S6, and S4 vehicles. The infotainment main unit may become damaged internally when the vehicle is shut off, resulting in an inoperative rearview camera display the next time the vehicle is started. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
- Consequence: An inoperative rearview camera display reduces the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the infotainment main unit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 6, 2022. Owners may contact Audi's customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 91Ei.

This car is truly amazing! It redefines what a 4 door sports sedan can be. The acceleration is incredibly strong, especially if you use launch control (my wife hates when I do that!). You can go from 0-60 in about 4.2 seconds. The cornering is smooth and composed, and the exhaust note is elegant yet sporty. You'll hear some crackles and pops when shifting under moderate to hard acceleration and on the downshifts. The 8-speed automatic is extremely quick and responsive. Initially, I was disappointed in not being able to row my own gears, but this 8-speed has finally convinced me that manuals, while more fun, have no chance when it comes to pure speed. Putting the transmission in manual mode provides the same sense of control as a true manual, both up and downshifts are immediate and lightning quick. The car is a sleeper on the outside, which makes it even more fun to embarrass drivers of other German products who don't expect the acceleration from the hot turbo V-6 (turbo is in the middle of the V). Turbo lag is non-existent if you plan ahead, but it can cause an unpleasant delay if you decide to punch it and the transmission happens to be in the wrong gear. I primarily drive it in manual mode, which is where any true enthusiast will do most of the driving.

As a BMW fan, I was initially hesitant to switch to the S4, but I took a chance and I'm so glad I did! This car is truly amazing. I recently drove it from New Jersey to San Diego and it was a breeze. The Quattro handled everything from downpours to sharp turns with ease, and the 3-way massaging seats kept me comfortable throughout the journey. The S4 accelerates like a rocket and handles like a dream at any speed. The different driving modes are essential for changing road conditions. The high-end technology in the Audi is what finally convinced me to switch from BMW. The adjustable color heads-up display with navigation and speed sign recognition worked flawlessly. Lane keeping assist took some getting used to, but it was a great feature to have on long drives. The navigation on dual screens is customizable and easy to use. The only downside was that the Audi Connect download speeds were a bit slow when searching for weather or traffic updates, but that's a minor issue considering all the other amazing features of this car.Overall, this car is fantastic and I'm looking forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

This car drives very well, but the S Sports Seats are the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in. No matter how they are set, something is always digging into my back. Despite the other assets of the car, the seats are a major issue. If you are contemplating buying this car with the Sports seats, give it a long test drive. Neither Audi nor my dealer has been of any help whatsoever.

Apart from the usual cost of the vehicle and the fact that maintenance can be expensive, the Audi driving experience is perfect. I have had the privilege of driving every German make at least once, and my experience with Audi has been nothing but spectacular, even with the loaner '20 A6 I received for a few weeks while my S4 was being serviced. The price tags may be high, but you definitely get what you pay for. It's a cliche, but it's the truth. The seats are incredibly comfortable, which is perfect for my fiance and me since we do a lot of road tripping. Whenever we drive the Audi, it's like a dream come true. I would never recommend buying a luxury vehicle brand new off the line, but with certified pre-owned, you really can't go wrong!

I strongly advise against purchasing the 2019 Audi S4 prestige due to my personal experience with major issues such as a broken sunroof and fuel injector problems at 2k and 4k miles respectively, and now at 6k miles, the fuel injector is acting up again with significant lag and poor gearing.

I personally own a brand new S4 2018 model, and after just one year, in 2019, all four tires had completely worn out and split. As a lady driver who drives carefully, this was a real shock and made me feel quite nervous about driving. What's more, I was never told upfront that S Sport models require a special alignment that costs double due to a camera sensor, which can also cause tires to have a shorter lifespan. When I brought my S4 in for a second recall service, I was told that my tires were split and worn, and that this was a common issue with most S models. They even suggested that I consider getting a regular A model instead. It's frustrating to hear these things, and I've recently heard a lot of bad news about Audi and disappointments from their clients. One person said that their engine light came on just three days after buying their car, while another said that they started hearing strange noises after just a week. And once the 50,000 mile warranty is up, you'll be paying a substantial amount for parts and services. So, it's worth considering alternatives like BMW, Mercedes, or Porsche. Do your research and make an informed decision.

I owned both a 2014 and 2018 A5 coupé, which I absolutely loved. However, I decided to upgrade to a 2020 S4, and I must say, it lives up to all the positive reviews. The car boasts an impressive amount of power and a luxurious interior. While the sports seats and ride may feel a bit stiff, this is to be expected. However, at highway speeds, the road noise can be quite loud and distracting, which is a shame. Despite having the upgraded sound system, it's not worth the investment for the S4, as the road noise can still overpower it. While this car is perfect for cruising around town or even the track, it's not ideal for extended periods on the freeway. Overall, the S4 is an impressive car that showcases Audi's engineering prowess.

I have owned many cars in my lifetime, over 30 to be exact, and unfortunately, my experience with the 2022 S4 has been quite disappointing. After 3 months of ownership, I have encountered a few issues that have been quite inconvenient. Firstly, I only received one key and was told that the second one would be mailed to me in 30 days due to a chip shortage. Unfortunately, it has now been 90 days and I have been informed that it will take another 90 days. This has been a bit of a hassle as my wife and I share the car. Secondly, the Audi Connect feature has not been working despite trying everything with Audi Corporate and the dealer. Thirdly, the technology is a bit clunky and requires too many button pushes compared to our 2018 Audi. Fourthly, one of the rear seat belt receivers has stopped working, rendering the right rear seat useless. Lastly, the ride is a bit harsh for a sports sedan. While I wasn't expecting a Cadillac ride, I do feel every little crack in the road. I loved my 2018 A4 and I really regret the decision to switch to the 2022 S4. After only 3 months and 1400 miles, my wife and I are considering trading it in for a different brand.
