The Audi S4 is the high performance variant of Audi's compact executive car A4. The original Audi S4, built from 1991 until 1994, was a performance-oriented version of Audi's 100 saloon/sedan. All subsequent S4s since 1997 have been based on the Audi A4; and as the A4 has evolved from one generation to the next, so has the S4.

Like its regular A4 counterpart, all S4 variants have had longitudinally oriented, front-mounted engines. All versions of the S4 have their transmission mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle, and like all Audi "S" cars, are only available as standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system, using a Torsen-based centre differential system. A more powerful internal combustion engine, larger upgraded brakes, firmer suspension, larger wheels, and distinctive sheetmetal, styling clues and badging have always been amongst the many upgrades the S4 receives over its mainstream 100 and A4 siblings. In markets where the even higher-performance Audi RS 4 is not offered, the S4 is the top-of-the-line trim of the A4 family.

A single turbocharged 2.2-litre inline five-cylinder powered the original C4 version, and a 2.7-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine was found in the B5 generation. The B6 and B7 versions shared a common 4.2-litre V8 engine, the first time that a V8 engine was placed in a compact executive car, placing it in direct competition with the BMW M3 (3.2 L inline 6) and Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG (3.2-litre supercharged V6). The B8 generation uses a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine and competed with the BMW 335i, BMW 335i/340i xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz C350. The current B9 generation is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, with rivals including the BMW M340i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG/Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC.

All versions of the S4 have been manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are, or have been available as a four-door five-seat saloon and a five-door five-seat Avant (Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon) body styles since the model's inception in 1991. A two-door four-seat Cabriolet (convertible) S4 variant was introduced as part of the B6 and B7 generation A4 lineups. The B8 Cabriolet has now been built off the A5 coupe body style and the "S" variant is marketed under the Audi S5 nameplate.

I THEN REALIZED IT WASN'T JUST A PUMP ISSUE AS THE CAR KEPT READING THOSE CODES AND KEPT STOPPING. I TALKED TO A LOCAL AUDI DEALERSHIP AND SAID I WOULD HAVE TO GET THE FUEL PUMP VAPOR EXTENSION. WHEN ASKED THEY SAID THAT IT'S ONLY A TSB NOT A RECALL DUE TO IT NOT BEING A SAFETY ISSUE. NOW YOU TELL ME, MY CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE AND STOPPED ONCE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY, AND 3 TIMES IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC 2 WEEKS LATER. I BELIEVE IT'S A SAFETY PROBLEM AS ANYONE COULD'VE RAN INTO ME AND CAUSED BIGGER PROBLEMS. I DON'T THINK I SHOULD PAY 800 DOLLARS FOR MY SAFETY. THE CAR STALLED ON THE FREEWAY AND WOULD INTERMITTENTLY RESTART UNTIL THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILED. THE REPAIR REQUIRED ADDITIONAL VALVES AND HOSES HE ADDED TO THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM TO COMPENSATE FOR THE POOR VAPOR MANAGEMENT DESIGN. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP WHERE THE APPROPRIATE FIX AND TSB WAS EXECUTED. TOTAL COST WAS ~$2200, $715 OF THAT TOTAL COST WERE THE NEW VALVES AND HOSES THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF THE INITIAL DESIGN.

THIS CAUSES DRIFTING ON THE HIGHWAY AND WHEN CORNERING BECAUSE YOU'RE COMPENSATING FOR THE LACK OF FEELING FOR AN INSTANT AND USING MORE INPUT THAN YOU SHOULD, THEN THE STEERING GETS TIGHT AGAIN AND YOUR CAR STEERS MORE THAN IT SHOULD HAVE. NOTE THAT THE CAR GOES STRAIGHT WHEN HANDS ARE NOT ON THE WHEEL. THIS IS MOST PREVALENT AT TIMES WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS IN THE STRAIGHT POSITION. THIS SEEMS TO BE DUE TO THE MOVEMENT OF THE STEERING WHEEL THAT HAPPENS UNDER THE FORCE OF THE DRIVERS HANDS AS THE STEERING ASSIST LEVEL FLUCTUATES. THE CAR DOES NOT WANT TO STAY CENTERED WHEN GOING STRAIGHT AND HANDS ARE RESTING ON THE WHEEL. THERE SEEMS TO BE EXCESSIVE ASSIST AT OR NEAR THE TOP DEAD CENTER. NOTE THAT THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE. IT MIGHT BE DRIVING FINE, THEN I TURN OFF THE ENGINE TO FILL UP WITH GAS FOR EXAMPLE, RE-START THE ENGINE AND THE PROBLEM PRESENTS ITSELF. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL AUDI DEALER ON 14DEC2016 AT 42,430 MILES (THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR WITH APPROX. 9,000 MILES) TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. THE TECHNICIAN WHO TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE ISSUE ON THAT DAY NOR THE NEXT DAY FROM WHAT THEY TOLD ME. THEY MENTION ON THEIR INVOICE THAT THEY SUSPECT IT COULD BE GROOVED ROADS CAUSING IT EVEN THOUGH I STRESSED TO THEM THAT THIS HAPPENS AT HIGH SPEEDS AND IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. I WAS FORCED NEARLY INTO A TRACTOR TRAILER ON THE HIGHWAY ONE DAY AND THAT SCARED ME ENOUGH TO FINALLY ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. WITH EVERY WORK ORDER, WHICH ARE NUMEROUS ON THIS CAR, IT IS STATED WHAT WAS DONE, BUT NOT THIS "SERVICE". TWO DAYS AFTER PICKING UP MY VEHICLE, AUDI REPORTED A RECALL DUE TO GAS LEAKS IN THEIR VEHICLES. MY VEHICLE IS STILL UNDER LEASE AND WARRANTY, YET THIS DEALERSHIP TOOK IT UPON THEMSELVES TO IGNORE MY CONCERNS, WHICH COULD POTENTIALLY BE FATAL.? ABSOLUTELY NO INTEGRITY, AND LACKING ANY SENSE OF MORALS.

  • Summary: 2014 AUDI S4 HAS DANGEROUS STEERING BEHAVIOR. THE STEERING SLIPS AT THE CENTER POSITION, WILL NOT GO STRAIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY, AND REQUIRES CONSTANT STEERING INPUT. THIS IS FURTHER EXACERBATED BY A CONSTANT NOTCHY FEELING AT ANY SPEED BETWEEN THE 10 AND 2 OCLOCK POSITION. IT IS PARTICULARLY BAD IN LONG SWEEPING TURNS WHERE YOU CAN DISTINCTLY FEEL A NOTCH. WHEN IN ONE OF THESE TURNS YOU WILL HAVE CONSTANT LINEAR STEERING FOLLOWED BY A NOTCH THAT WHEN SURPASSED RESULTS IN A LARGE STEERING INPUT WHICH IS UNEXPECTED AND DESTABILIZING TO THE VEHICLE IF AT HIGH SPEEDS. THE PROBLEM IS WORSE DURING COLD TEMPERATURES. THIS IS INTERMITTENT BUT REPEATABLE AND IS A KNOWN ISSUE ON ALL 2013+ S4 & S5 MODELS WITH THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING. AUDI SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO COME UP WITH A PERMANENT AND SAFE SOLUTION AS THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. ALSO, AUDIS DRIVER STEERING RECOMMENDATION (DSR) MAKES THE PROBLEM WORSE. DSR IS AN ELECTRONIC PROGRAM THAT DETECTS WHEN THE CAR IS STARTING TO SKID AND THE STEERING'S ECU PROVIDES A PROMPT TO THE DRIVER TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM BY MAKING THE STEERING WHEEL MOVE SLIGHTLY (BUMP). THIS I PARTICULARLY BAD IN WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS IN WHICH THE CAR HAS LIMITED TRACTION DUE TO SNOW AND ICE AND RESULTS IN CONTINUOUS BUMPING OF THE STEERING WHEEL. COMBINING DSR WITH THE STEERING SLIP + NOTCHY ISSUES RESULTS IN A VERY DANGEROUS STEERING SYSTEM WHICH NEEDS IMMEDIATE RESOLUTION.

  • Summary: BRAKES LIGHT CAME ON AND PADS ARE WORN AND ROTORS ARE WARPED AT ONLY 16,000 MILES. HAD THE AUDI DEALER IN WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CALIFORNIA REPLACES BOTH PADS AND ROTORS. SEVEN MONTHS AND 8,000 MILES LATER, WHILE DOING THE MAINTENANCE OIL CHANGE, A DIFFERENT AUDI DEALER IN WOODLAND HILLS, CA NOTIFIED THAT BRAKE PADS ARE WORN AT 4MM AND ROTORS ARE WARPED. THIS WEAR OUT PATTERN IS BEYOND THE MINIMUM EXPECTATION OF THE LIFE OF THE BRAKES UNDER AVERAGE DRIVING CONDITION. BRAKES PADS ARE WORN TOO SOON, AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE ROTORS ARE ALSO WARPED AND NEEDED REPLACING TOO FREQUENT. I LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, WITH NORMAL DRIVING CONDITION, 60% FREEWAY AND 40% SURFACE STREET, I HAVE NEVER HAD BRAKES WORN OUT THIS QUICKLY IN ALL OF MY PREVIOUS 5 CARS. AUDI DEALER AUTOMATICALLY BLAME MY DRIVING CONDITIONS AND SAID THIS IS A WEAR AND TEAR ITEM. I FEEL THEY SOLD ME A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT AND THIS CAR IS A LEMON, BUT AUDI REFUSE TO TAKE IT BACK.

  • Summary: STEPPED IN MY CAR TO GO OUT, STARTED CAR AS I PUSHED THE CLUTCH DOWN. CLUTCH PEDAL SNAPPED TO THE FLOOR. CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALER. PART THAT FAILED WAS SLAVE CYLINDER. CAR ONLY HAS 12,200 MILES. CAR IS USED TO COMMUTE TO WORK AND BACK, NO UNUSUAL STRAIN OF ANY KIND ON THE CAR. I WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS NOT DRIVING THE CAR WHEN THE CYLINDER FAILED. I WOULD BEEN UNABLE TO CHANGE GEARS TO SAFELY STOP THE CAR. PERHAPS I COULD HAVE PULLED IT OUT OF GEAR BUT I AM NOT SURE HOW I WOULD HAVE REACTED. MY COMMUTE TO WORK HAS ME TAKE A HIGHER WITH LOTS OF FAST MOVING CARS (RTE 17, NORTHER NJ). I COULD HAVE HIT THE BRAKES AND FORCE THE ENGINE TO STALL. IN THAT SCENARIO, I WOULD LOST POWER ASSISTED FUNCTIONS. THAT WOULD HAVE ALSO BEEN A VERY UNSAFE SITUATION. CAR IS NOW AT THE DEALER AND IS EXPECTED TO BE THERE FOR ANOTHER WEEK OR SO. REPLACEMENT SLAVE CYLINDER IS ON BACK ORDER FROM GERMANY. AGAIN, IN MY CASE I WAS LUCKY BUT IF THIS PROBLEM IS A RECURRING ONE IN THIS MODEL, THAT WOULD PRESENT A SAFETY PROBLEM. I AM SUBMITTED THIS NOTE OUT OF CONCERN FOR ANY OTHER DRIVER THAT MAY RUN INTO THIS ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL . I HAVE OWNED MANUAL CARS MY WHOLE LIFE AND I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS TYPE OF FAILURE.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,900.

  • Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Audi A4 and S4 vehicles manufactured February 16, 2012, to October 21, 2014, and 2013-2015 Audi Allroad vehicles manufactured March 12, 2012, to October 21, 2014. Due to an improper algorithm in the air bag control module, if a crash necessitates deployment of the side air bags, a second impact to the front of the vehicle may not command the front air bags to also deploy.
  • Consequence: If the front air bags do not deploy in the event of a secondary impact to the front of the vehicle, there is an increased risk of occupant injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and Audi dealers will update the air bag control unit software, free of charge. The recall began on November 14, 2014. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-822-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69K5.

    I purchased my Audi S4 brand new in November 2011. Unfortunately, in December of the same year, the radiator broke down. After a bit of discussion, the dealer agreed to replace the coolant free of charge. Recently, on March 3rd, the FM radio stopped working. The screen is blank and there is no sound. Yesterday, the screen went blank for about 20 minutes, but after turning off the engine and waiting for an hour, the FM radio returned to normal. Today, we tried the same thing, but it did not work. While these issues are frustrating, I will continue to document any further problems with my car.

    Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the S4 that I recently purchased. Unfortunately, I had some issues with the brakes after taking it for a spin at the Infineon Raceway. The dealership determined that the rotors were bad, which was surprising to me since I've owned 10 Audi's in the past and have never had this issue before. However, I was disappointed to learn that Audi USA would not cover the cost of the brakes.     I purchased this car brand new last year and initially loved every aspect of it, despite some minor issues. However, I did experience some frustration with wind blowing through the windows while listening to talk radio on the highway. Additionally, my S4 came equipped with the Upgraded Summer Tire package featuring the Continental Conti Contact 3s, which unfortunately turned out to be the worst tires I have ever used. The tread pattern wore out unusually quickly after only 7K miles, which was a major disappointment considering the high cost of the option. If you are considering purchasing a car with these tires, I would strongly recommend having them changed before making your purchase.

    This car is a Teutonic variation on the classic American muscle car. It takes a mid-size car (the A4, in this case) and installs a larger, more powerful engine. The S4 offers excellent acceleration with superb handling and ride quality, combined with reasonable fuel economy. Although it is not inexpensive (especially in Prestige trim), I cannot think of a car with its combination of virtues available at a lower price from any other manufacturer.

    This car is truly impressive. It provides a luxurious experience that makes you feel like you're driving an XJ, while still allowing you to accelerate at any moment. The car's limits are so far out that you almost never feel like you're going fast, which is a testament to its exceptional performance. There's no drama, but that's not what I need when I'm trying to get somewhere safely. Plus, I'm getting great fuel economy. When I switch to comfort mode, my wife can enjoy driving too. The Monsoon grey exterior and mustang brown interior (Canada) are a beautiful colour combination. Overall, I'm extremely happy with this car!
