The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.

First generation (BL; 2002)

2002–2006

Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.

It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.

There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Common 2007 Kia Sorento problems

Common Problems with the Kia Sorento 2007

The Kia Sorento 2007 has been known to have several issues, which have been reported by owners of this car. This article will discuss these problems in detail, based on the complaints from the owners of this car.

Passenger Side Airbag Light

One of the most common problems with the Kia Sorento 2007 is the intermittent passenger side airbag light. Sometimes it's on when someone sits in the seat, and sometimes it goes off. This problem is caused by a known software glitch, which Kia is working on a fix for it. However, some dealers have mentioned that it's a design flaw, where the sensor wouldn't pick up a person unless they sit all the way back in the seat. This problem can be frustrating for the owners, and they may need to take the vehicle to the dealer to get it fixed.

Engine Hesitation

Another common problem with the Kia Sorento 2007 is the hesitation when you press the gas pedal. This problem occurs at stops and when you are trying to accelerate fast on the highway. There is a noticeable hesitation between when you press on the gas pedal and when the engine finally kicks in. This problem can be caused by a known software issue, which Kia is working on a fix for it. However, if the software update doesn't work, then it would have to be a fix that comes from Kia.

Engine Problems

The Kia Sorento 2007 has been known to have engine problems, which can be a significant issue for the owners. The engine tends to fail, primarily experienced in 2011, 2016, and 2017 models. The engine failure happened due to a leaking head gasket, causing the coolant to mix with the engine oil. The mixture of these liquids can cause severe engine damage. This problem can be expensive to fix, and the owners may need to replace the engine entirely.

Faulty Doors

The Kia Sorento 2007 has been known to have faulty doors, which can be frustrating for the owners. The doors of the Sorento won't open when accessed from the outside, and the owners who use the child-lock feature become even more frustrated due to faulty door handles. Most of the complaints are from 2011 Sorento owners.

Headlight Bulbs Burning Out

The Kia Sorento 2007 has been known to have headlight bulbs that burn out prematurely. This problem is mostly seen with 2002 to 2009 Sorentos, where dozens of consumers reported that the headlight bulbs were prone to burning out prematurely. On top of that, some accounts said that other components of the headlights were also melted. This reliability issue seems ripe for a recall, but there were none. Affected owners had to buy replacement bulbs for around $100 to $600.

Vibrations/Noises from A/C Compressor

The Kia Sorento 2007 has been known to have vibrations or noises from the A/C compressor. This problem is reportedly prone to failure in the 2002 to 2009 Kia Sorentos. The A/C compressor failure can be expensive to fix, and the owners may need to replace the entire A/C compressor.

In conclusion, the Kia Sorento 2007 has been known to have several issues, which have been reported by the owners of this car. These problems include passenger side airbag light, engine hesitation, engine problems, faulty doors, headlight bulbs burning out, and vibrations/noises from A/C compressor. These problems can be frustrating for the owners, and they may need to take the vehicle to the dealer to get it fixed. However, it's important to note that these problems are not common in all Kia Sorento 2007 models, and some owners may not experience any of these problems.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-03
  • VIN: KNDJD736375
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The doors were locked by using the button on the driver side of our Kia Sorento. This is performed each time the car is traveling on the road. When the car was parked, the automatic unlock for all the doors worked for both front seat passengers but not the two rear doors. The inside handles for opening the doors on both of the rear passenger doors did not open. Attempting to prior the lock mechanism on both rear doors did not work either thus I was trapped in the back seat of the vehicle. I had to crawl out of the truck of the vehicle to exit. In my opinion, this poses a serious safety concern not only with this Kia but with other ones as well. What interesting about this incident is that mechanics, at Kia or other places have no idea how to solve the problem.

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-25
  • VIN: KNDJD736475
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN MY STEERING WHEEL BECAME REALLY STIFF LIKE I LOST POWER STEERING. I LOOKED AT MY DASH AND HAD A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, OIL LIGHT, ABS LIGHT, AND ESC OFF LIGHT ILLUMINATED. I PRESSED THE GAS TO TRY TO SWITCH LANES AS I WAS IN THE FAR LEFT LANE AND NEEDED TO REACH THE SHOULDER TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I TURNED MY FLASHERS ON AND WAS LUCKILY ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. WHEN I WAS ON THE SHOULDER I TURNED THE KEY OFF AND THEN BACK ON. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND OIL LIGHT WENT AWAY, BUT THE ABS LIGHT AND THE ESC LIGHT REMAINED ON. I STARTED TO DRIVE BACK TOWARDS MY HOUSE AND FELT THE CAR IDLING ROUGHLY WHEN AT A STOP. AT HOME MY HUSBAND DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY FOR A FEW MINUTES WHICH SOLVED THE ROUGH IDLING ISSUE BUT THE ABS AND ESC LIGHTS ARE STILL ON. I AM NOW SCARED TO DRIVE MY DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL AND HAVE THE CAR SHIFT OFF AGAIN. I HAVE READ SIMILAR REVIEWS ABOUT THIS VEHICLE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BY KIA TO SOLVE THIS. THEY RECALLED SOME VEHICLES FOR THIS ISSUE BUT MINE IS NOT LISTED AND CLEARLY NEEDS TO BE! *TR

THE CAR WAS PARKED OUTSIDE AS SUGGESTED. I RECEIVED A SECOND NOTICE AT THE END OF JUNE. THE SUV WAS SERVICED 7/14/20 FOR A RECALL ON THE BRAKING CIRCUIT. ON 8/22/20 A BEAUTIFULLY CLEAR SATURDAY, I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM A NEIGHBORING COMMUNITY ON A PAVED COUNTRY ROAD. I NOTICED THAT THE ESC OFF INDICATOR LIGHT DISPLAYED ON THE DASHBOARD. I STOPPED TO LOOK IN THE MANUAL TO SEE IF THE CAR WAS DRIVEABLE. I PARKED MY CAR IN THE GARAGE AFTER ARRIVING HOME AND NOTICED THAT TAIL LIGHTS/BRAKE LIGHTS REMAINED ON EVEN WITH THE ENGINE TURNED OFF. BECAUSE OF TWO PRIOR MANUFACTURER WARNINGS ABOUT FIRE WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, I PARKED THE CAR OUTSIDE AWAY FROM THE HOUSE AS RECOMMENDED. I CALLED THE KIA DEALERSHIP AT 4:30 THAT DAY AND ARRANGED WITH CAMERON TO DROP THE SUV OFF ON SUNDAY. ON SUNDAY, MY NEIGHBOR HELPED JUMP START MY CAR AND HE FOOLED AROUND UNDER THE DASH TO TURN THE BRAKE LIGHTS OFF. HE SAID TO TELL THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE WIRES WERE WARM WHICH I DID. I INCLUDED A LIST OF CONCERNS/FACTS WITH MY KEY IN THE DROP OFF BOX. ON MONDAY, 8/24/20 CAMERON, THE SERVICE AGENT, SAID THAT THE BRAKING CIRCUIT "WAS FRIED" . THE REPAIR COST OF $2,516.07 WOULD INCLUDE THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT AND ALL WIRES. THE COMPLETED WORK ORDER BILL SAID THAT THE HYDRAULIC MODUL WAS REPLACED, THE SWITCH ASSEMBLY, AND HECU,

A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

  • Manufacturer: KIA MOTORS CORPORATION
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
  • Summary: KIA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 SORENTO PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JUNE 15, 2006 THROUGH NOVEMBER 27, 2007. THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG MAY BE TURNED OFF WHEN AN ADULT IS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG IS DESIGNED TO BE TURNED OFF IN LIMITED CIRCUMSTANCES INCLUDING WHEN CHILDREN AND SMALL ADULTS ARE SEATED IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THERE IS A CHILD RESTRAINT IN THAT SEAT OR THE SEAT IS NOT OCCUPIED. THE VEHICLE'S OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM (OCS), WHICH CLASSIFIES THE OCCUPANT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, MAY MISCLASSIFY AN ADULT PASSENGER AS A CHILD OR CHILD SEAT AND IMPROPERLY TURN OFF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG. WHEN THE AIR BAG IS DEACTIVATED THE "PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF" LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE ON THE CENTER INSTRUMENT PANEL.
  • Consequence: THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG IS TURNED OFF WHEN THE OCS MISCLASSIFIES AN ADULT PASSENGER. WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF, THE FRONT PASSENGER WILL NOT HAVE THE PROTECTION OF THE PASSENGER AIR BAGS IN SOME FRONTAL COLLISIONS, THUS INCREASING THE RISK OF OCCUPANT INJURY.
  • Remedy: KIA WILL UPDATE THE PROGRAMMING IN THE SORENTO OCS CONTROL MODULE AT NO CHARGE. THE RECALL REMEDY IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE UNDER SERVICE CAMPAIGN SC076. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-333-4542.

A STOP LAMP SWITCH MALFUNCTION MAY ALSO AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE-TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK FEATURE SO THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF THE PARK POSITION. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MALFUNCTION LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, AND IT MAY NOT DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.

Negative 2007 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Kenyon Fisher 2024-04-29

The car has a leak from the top rail and vibrates when braking, which Kia failed to fix.

  2. Cordell Denesik 2024-01-19

This vehicle exhibits poor quality. The electronics failed immediately, including the radio, remote device, and door locks. The lack of quality control is unacceptable.

  3. Emery Crona 2024-01-03

I traded in my 2004 Sedona van due to repeated brake issues, which included 2 sets of rotors and 4 brake jobs in just 64,000 miles. When I purchased my Sorrento, I was assured that the brake problems had been fixed. However, my Sorrento has only 37,000 miles and is already on its second set of replacement rotors. Unfortunately, the brake warranty is only valid for 12,000 miles, which is disappointing. Additionally, the scheduled maintenance required to keep the warranty intact is quite expensive, costing $524.00 for the 30,000 mile service. Although the gas mileage is not great for the size of the car, I still enjoy driving it. It is worth noting that the car depreciates rapidly, as my trade-in value is only $10,400 according to Kelly Blue Book.

Positive 2007 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Dimitri Schmidt 2025-01-03

You get to drive this vehicle! It's powerful, fun, and looks great. The transmission is awesome - it's both manual and automatic, so you can pick your gear. There's plenty of room for moving what you need, but it's not a land yacht with a lot of wasted space.

  2. Jayde Gislason 2024-11-25

I am confident in my assessment that the Sorento is a great vehicle. However, it is concerning that the rotors had to be replaced at less than 15000 miles and again at less than 28000 miles, despite my careful braking habits. Additionally, I have noticed some hesitation in speed and acceleration during stop-and-go situations, which can be alarming. While I have been told that this is due to the vehicle's computer adjusting to my driving style, I believe it is important to address these issues to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle. Despite these concerns, I remain overall satisfied with the Sorento.

  3. Troy Collier 2024-11-24

You have a very nice car! It's really fast and powerful, and comfortable for long drives. The ride is smooth and the audio system is great. It may be a little thirsty, but overall it sounds like a fantastic ride!

  4. Colt Bernhard 2024-11-17

This is a great vehicle for the money. Kia used to have a reputation as a third-rate company, but they have really stepped up their game. The sound of the door closing alone is a testament to the quality of the vehicle - no cheap pings here, just a solid thud.

  5. Jaydon Wehner 2024-11-09

I bought this SUV to upgrade from a minivan that I drove for 5 years. I'm really enjoying every aspect of this vehicle - the style, drive, color, and options are all great. It's definitely a fantastic SUV for the money I spent.
