The Subaru Crosstrek (Japanese: スバル・クロストレック, Hepburn: Subaru Kurosutorekku) (also known as the Subaru XV globally for the first two generations) is a compact crossover SUV produced by Subaru since 2012. It is a successor to the Outback Sport in the United States and Canada, and the Impreza XV globally. Like the Outback Sport, the Crosstrek is a lifted Impreza hatchback with minor differences, though with a more substantial lift than the Outback Sport.

Initially, the vehicle was marketed as the XV globally, and as the XV Crosstrek in the United States and Canada. In 2015, Subaru dropped the XV moniker in the United States and Canada, marketing it simply as the Crosstrek for the 2016 model year and onward. In 2022, Subaru introduced the third-generation model, using the Crosstrek nameplate globally for the first time.

All generations of the Crosstrek are raised versions of the Subaru Impreza hatchback.

Common 2014 Subaru Xv crosstrek problems

The Subaru XV Crosstrek 2014 has been reported to have several common problems, including ignition switch and park position lockout, excessive oil consumption, unintended acceleration, batteries draining, CVT problems, oil leaks, wheel bearing failure, weak windscreens and sunroofs, and transmission issues

Ignition switch and park position lockout are common problems in the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek. The ignition switch may fail, causing the car to not start or the engine to stall while driving. The park position lockout can also occur, where the car cannot be shifted out of park, even with the brake pedal depressed

Excessive oil consumption is another issue reported by owners of the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek. This problem is caused by the piston rings not sealing properly, leading to oil leaking into the combustion chamber and burning off. This can result in the engine using up to a quart of oil every 1,000 miles

Unintended acceleration has also been reported in the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek. This can be caused by a faulty throttle position sensor or a malfunctioning accelerator pedal assembly. This issue can be dangerous, as it can cause the car to suddenly speed up without the driver's input

Batteries draining is a common problem in the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek, especially in models equipped with the Lineartronic CVT. This issue is caused by the CVT's electronic control unit drawing too much power from the battery, even when the car is turned off. This can result in the battery going dead, requiring a jump start or replacement

CVT problems are also common in the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek. The CVT, or continuously variable transmission, can hesitate or shake while shifting gears, causing a uncomfortable ride. In some cases, the CVT can cause the engine to stall, requiring a restart of the car

Oil leaks are a common problem in the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek, especially as the car ages. The engine's construction contains several potential failure points, which can lead to oil leaks. These leaks can be caused by worn out gaskets or seals, and can result in the engine running low on oil, potentially causing damage

Wheel bearing failure is another common problem in the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek. The wheel bearings can wear out prematurely, causing a loud humming or growling noise while driving. This issue can also cause the steering wheel to vibrate, and can potentially lead to a loss of control of the car

Weak windscreens and sunroofs are also common problems in the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek. The windshield can crack easily, and the sunroof can leak or become stuck in the open or closed position. These issues can be caused by faulty seals or poor installation, and can result in the need for replacement of the windshield or sunroof

Transmission issues are a common problem in the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek, especially in models equipped with the Lineartronic CVT. The transmission can hesitate or shake while shifting gears, causing a uncomfortable ride. In some cases, the transmission can cause the engine to stall, requiring a restart of the car. Transmission repairs can be expensive, with simple basic repairs starting around $1,000 and complete replacement costing up to $8,000

In conclusion, the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek has several common problems, including ignition switch and park position lockout, excessive oil consumption, unintended acceleration, batteries draining, CVT problems, oil leaks, wheel bearing failure, weak windscreens and sunroofs, and transmission issues. These problems can be costly to repair, and can affect the safety and reliability of the car.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-06
  • VIN: JF2GPACC2E8
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Ignition key keeps intermittently locking into ignition when trying to retrieve key. Putting vehicle in park, key will turn engine off, but then will not turn all the way to release the key. Key has a key fob, vehicle is placed on parking gear. Sometimes restarting vehicle can help, sometimes shifting gears and driving vehicle again can help. Sometimes turning steering wheel helps. Sometimes all you can do is wait a few to five minutes to be able to turn off vehicle and retrieve car. No warning lights. After my warranty expired was when I noticed the problem. Bought vehicle used less than a year ago. It can be a safety risk if I cannot retrieve my key and then anyone could jump in and steal it as their is no other way to lock the vehicle unless I automatically locky myself out.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-03
  • VIN: JF2GPAVC8E8
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I started having issues with my car when I could not turn it off -- the key was stuck in the ignition and I was unable to turn the car fully off. This continued to happen and the only fix I found to get the car off was to turn the car back on, shift the gear into drive, then try to turn it off again. Sometimes it would take repeated tries of turning the car on and trying to turn it off. The problems then got worse when I started to have issues starting the car as well; the car would struggle to start and I lost confidence in the vehicle. Every workday I have to drive my car to a location where I have to turn off my vehicle while a security check is performed -- one day I got stuck at this checkpoint when I could not start my car. I was afraid to drive my car, thinking I could get stuck somewhere with it running or with it unable to start. A certified Subaru repair shop confirmed the issue is a known problem with Subaru parts described in a Technical Service Bulletin [XXX] ). There were no warning lights before these problems began and the Subaru dealer told me when they initially ran a diagnostic on the car it came back as having no issues. Since having the part in the gear shifter replaced at personal expense all problems have been resolved. Since Subaru knew of the faulty part in their vehicles, I think they should have issued a recall or at minimum warned their drivers. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-14
  • VIN: JF2GPAGC9E8
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving on highway the engine died, I was able to pull over and stop safely. The engine turned over when I turned the key but would not start. The fuel gauge showed one full bar of fuel and the fuel mileage reading showed 60 miles till empty. I contacted roadside assistance and after 2 hours was able to put 4 gallons of fuel in the car. The car started normally and I was able to drive to gas station and fill up. The fuel gauge had never failed to accurately show the fuel in my car and the mileage range till empty was always accurate. I do not trust my cars fuel gauge anymore. I was lucky not to be in the city in rush hour and stuck in traffic. I will contact Subaru to report the problem.

  • VIN: jf2gpagc4eh
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Battery drains excessively and frequently. Will not hold a charge. Frequently replacing battery only to have it fail. The personal safety issue here is being stranded with a dead battery in an unsafe environment with no way to escape, or needing the vehicle for an immediate personal health emergency and having the vehicle not start. I don't know if there is a safety related issue with operating the car with this electrical system issue. There are scores of web searches that depict this issue of parasitic draining of the battery by the vehicle's controller area network. Several class action lawsuits are referenced. I don't find any information that the lawsuits have resolved in a recall of any sort. Thank you for your interest in it this issue.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-27
  • VIN: JF2GPACC6E8
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The problem occurs during a yaw under all the following conditions: * Slippery surface (snow/ice/heavy rain) * highway speeds (>45mph) * CEL lit for P000A and/or P000C (camshaft position sensor slow response) When the car yaws in these conditions, Vehicle Dynamic Control applies the brakes on the inside of the yaw (rightward yaw = brakes on right side, leftward yaw = brakes on left side), worsening the yaw and causing the vehicle to pendulum back and forth. This occurred several times while both my wife and I were driving, and caused lane departures on interstate highways twice while I was driving. The unintended yaws at high speed were slight and very controllable. I had applied a gentle countersteer without changing pedal inputs when the VDC began inside braking. When the yaw swapped sides, VDC braked on the other side. I wound up fighting VDC via steering to keep the nose straight, twice starting at about 55mph and winding up in a different lane at 30. Subaru states that the trouble codes disable traction and stability control, and the traction control disabled light was lit. However, I confirmed that even with the codes and the TC lamp lit, if I induce a large yaw in a snowy parking lot at low speeds (< 30mph) VDC does engage and straightens the car correctly whether I countersteer or not. I have years of FWD rallycross (dirt) experience and I still race on pavement, so I'm pretty familiar VDC trying to straighten a yawing car when I forget to turn it off. As this is my wife's car and not mine, I didn't know how to disable TC and she didn't either. My wife described the problem as heavy swaying back and forth in slippery conditions, but not bad enough to put her out of her lane. She has almost no experience with controlling a sliding vehicle. The problem was likely worse for me because I was already countersteering when VDC engaged. Subaru has inspected the car and found no problems other than the codes. Subaru case 220121-38086.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-01
  • VIN: JF2GPACC8E8
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The vehicle had 51666 miles on it when I last serviced it for an oil change in Oct. of 2021. The owner puts very few miles on the vehicle. The vehicle would be available for inspection by your agency. At this time, no specific component has been identified in the intermittent failure. 2016 and newer Subaru's have recalls on similar symptoms. Owner complaint is that the power steering intermittently stops working and the steering wheel is very hard to turn if it can be turned at all due to the fact the owner is 80+ years old. Subaru vehicles from 2016 and up have had this issue and recalls have been issued on them, but not on this model year. Owner stated today that the problem has only occurred so far on initial start-up, and one time, once the key was cycled start, then off and back to start again then the power steering worked. She said the p/s warning light came on, and then went off, but I cannot verify that at this point. Warning lamps on IP's do come on during the key on to start on the ignition switch start process, so this may be part of normal IP function. I am an auto repair shop owner and have grave concerns that this failure may happen while the customer is driving down the road, and if approaching a turn and the power steering locks up, they could die due to the inability to safely maneuver out of traffic and get off the road or miss a bend in the highway. The customer brought the car in once, and I could not re-create the problem cold or warm. I am currently waiting for the dealer in Green Bay to call me back with more information as the nearest dealer from the customer's residence is a 170 mile round trip. At this point, it has not been back to the dealer for inspection for the p/s system, and I am awaiting call back today from Bergstrom Subaru in Green Bay. Bergstrom did confirm the recall for a brake light switch was completed previously by them, and there were no other campaigns or recalls listed in their computer records.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-14
  • VIN: JF2GPAKCXE8
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Rolling into a stop sign, the brakes did not work and was stuck- extremely difficult to step on. It eventually loosened after about 7 seconds and I was able to stop, but had to run the stop sign and almost hit a car. This occurred when the temperature was about 25 degrees F outside. Upon reading on forums and in a Subaru bulletin (# 06-79-20), it seems like this is a common occurrence for many Subaru owners when the temperature drops.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-11
  • VIN: JF2GPAGC7E8
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On June 11, 2021, my wife and I were driving our 2014 Subaru Crosstrek (120,000 miles) from Milwaukee to Manitowish Waters, WI. About 20 miles north of Milwaukee on I-41 Northbound, my wife was driving at 70 mph when suddenly we both noticed a strong lurching from the CVT transmission. This was followed a few seconds later by a complete lockup of all four wheels on our car. Fortunately this did not happen in the left lane or we would've been in a terrible accident. My wife managed to steer the skidding car onto the highway shoulder until it came to a rest. The engine was still running. The transmission was completely dead. We called a towing company to tow the car to Sommers Subaru in Mequon WI. They diagnosed the problem as sudden catastrophic transmission failure and told us that the 2014 Crosstrek had tons of problems with the CVT. We told the service department that we could have been seriously injured or killed had my wife not been driving in the right lane of the interstate. We paid $7,800 for a remanufactured CVT as the power train was out of warranty. I have seen one other report of catastrophic CVT failure on your website involving a 2014 Crosstrek (Danbury CT). I'm sure there are others out in the world who have also suffered this, and God knows how many may have resulted in accidents with injuries or death. Perhaps they did not know to contact NHTSA with their experiences. I pray that you will initiate an investigation into this issue and force Subaru USA to issue a recall on their 2014 Crosstreks to replace the transmissions that are the source of these frightening incidents. Thank you.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-08
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF2GPAGC5EH
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I own a Subaru Crosstrek XV Limited which I purchased new in November 2014. I was in a line of vehicles on a street waiting to enter a business parking lot and drive-thru. There was an incline from the street into the parking lot. The vehicle in front of me reached the top of the incline and turned right into the parking lot. With my foot remaining on the brake, I raised my foot slightly to allow my vehicle to move up the incline, my car suddenly accelerated and crashed into the bumper of the vehicle in front of me. The local police were contacted and a report was made. It was like when the cruise control is engaged and the engine given more power to climb an incline or hill. I don't know what caused this to happen, but am taking it to a local mechanic since the closest Subaru dealer is 75 miles away.

Negative 2014 Subaru Xv crosstrek car reviews

  1. Gunnar Hoppe 2024-11-13

After purchasing my 2014 Crosstrek from a local Subaru dealer, I noticed that the Low Oil Indicator light would come on every 2,500 miles. When I contacted the dealer, they informed me that the 2013 and 2014 Crosstreks may experience oil consumption issues during the break-in period. Unfortunately, even when the car had 30k miles, it would still be down 1 quart or more between changes. As a result, I decided to trade it in for a more reliable Toyota.

  2. Adolf Boehm 2024-10-13

Auxiliary battery and ISG failed again at 104,000 miles while driving. This was very dangerous as both are part of the hybrid system. I understand your frustration and disappointment with this experience. As a mechanical engineer with a PE license in several states, your expectations for quality and safety are understandably high. I hope that Subaru can address this issue and regain your trust in the future.

  3. Laron Jacobs 2024-08-14

Fun ride! It's amazing how well this car handles in the winter, even after 2 years. Unfortunately, it's a bit too small for my two kids, but it can fit just as much luggage as a midsize car. I've had some trouble with the Subaru service department not covering things that should be covered under the extended Subaru Care warranty, but overall I've enjoyed my time with this car. I'm planning on selling it soon while the mileage is still low.

  4. Lamar Keebler 2024-06-29

I have been a loyal Toyota owner for the past 28 years, but recently decided to try out the 2014 Crosstrek. Unfortunately, after only 3 months, the Check Engine light came on and I had to take it to the dealer. The issue was with the Oil Control Valve, which is a common problem in many cars, but usually occurs after at least 75k miles. Although my Crosstrek had to spend a few days in the shop, I am confident that this was just a minor setback and that my car will continue to perform well in the future. While researching online, I did come across some negative reviews about Subaru's reliability, but I believe that every make has its problems. Overall, I am still satisfied with my purchase and would recommend the Crosstrek to others. It's important to do your own research before making a decision, but I believe that Subaru is a reliable and trustworthy brand.

This Subaru model may not be suitable for driving in real snow conditions. While my wife and I have owned 5 Subaru's, we experienced a loss of traction and slid across the oncoming lane into a snow bank on a mountain road. Despite having tires in excellent condition, this Subaru did not grip the road as well as our previous models. It is important to exercise caution when driving this car in snowy conditions. We recommend avoiding inclines and opting for flat roads instead.

Small, quick, and great on gas. The Tech is really great; the audio can play from an SD card, AUX jack, Bluetooth, and even from a USB slot hidden in the console. You can literally copy 20+ gigs of music to a (low profile) USB stick, and have ALL the music you own with you all the time without having to use your phone while driving. Plus, with AWD, you can take it camping and hiking. It's exactly what you wanted!

I love my car! It looks sharp, handles great in the snow, and gets 31 mpg. There's plenty of room to haul all my stuff, like hay and riding gear. The only downside is that the acceleration from a stop could be better, but that's to be expected with a smaller engine in an all-wheel drive car. The seat heaters aren't the best, as they run off ambient temperature, which can be annoying. Also, the seats aren't the most comfortable for those with bigger butts. It would be great to have a beeper warning with the backup camera. Despite these minor issues, I'm very pleased with my car and would definitely buy another one. I recently got new tires, Coopers, but I'm disappointed that my mpg has dropped by 4. However, if they last longer than the factory tires, I'll be happy. After 26 months, I'm still very happy with my car. I'm even getting a new one today, a 2019 Crosstrek!

I bought my XV brand new in 2014 with only 8 miles on it from the showroom. Living and working in NYC, I have driven in every possible condition that you could encounter driving in New York. Despite this, I have driven with ease and confidence in every blizzard we have had here since I purchased the car. The XV is super quick and agile around town and at city speeds, which is key for city driving and where I think this car shines. Although some reviews I've read before and after buying this car mentioned that acceleration on the highway isn't great, I believe that for the average driver it's just fine. The engine/transmission in this car have a lot of character, and I've had to learn to know what to expect from it under any given situation. It will not always act the same, but if you pay attention, you can use your familiarity with the vehicle's throttle response to get it to do what you need. It also helps to have an understanding of this car's limitations. Please note that this is not a race car and is not sporty by any sense of the word. The only issues I have had with my Crosstrek is that I've had to replace or patch every single one of my tires. However, this is not necessarily Subaru's fault. In my opinion, the cabin is loud at highway speeds, but no more than similarly priced cars of the same year. Gas mileage has been good considering it's full-time AWD, but obviously below that of an equally spec'd FWD car. My warranty just expired, so I'm hoping nothing starts to go wrong all of a sudden. This car has been nothing short of fantastically reliable, and I hope it continues to be.

This car is the best in its class for resale value and snow performance.

I've owned several Subaru cars in the past, including the Impreza and Legacy. So, I'm familiar with the usual criticisms of Subarus. While the engine noise can be a bit loud and the pickup isn't great, this car is safe, rugged, and has a higher ground clearance, which is especially helpful if you live in an area that gets measurable snowfall. My previous Legacy handled well in snowstorms, but its low ground clearance caused problems. I highly recommend the Limited trim with navigation and XM radio, as they are definitely worth the extra expense. This car is fun to drive and has a unique appearance compared to other Subaru cars. Although I haven't had the chance to drive it in the snow yet, it has handled well in wet weather.
