The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.

The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it was made to replace the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) which was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.

First generation (YD1; 2001)

Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.

The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).

The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.

The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: 5J8YD4H5XJL

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: 5J8YD4H56JL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: 1.) I have had repeated, on-going issues with the fuel propulsion system since the day I bought the car. When I step on the accelerator it randomly (lately more constant than random) does not respond, then it will shoot me out into traffic. For example when I am entering the highway from an onramp, I see my opportunity to merge into traffic and I step on the gas - nothing - no response, then it suddenly accelerates and shoots me into oncoming traffic. This is SO BAD that I am afraid to drive the vehicle. It is DEADLY. I have reported the issue every time I have had the car serviced (always dealer serviced, from same dealer where I bought it.) 2.) The vehicle will randomly decide that I am going to hit a car in another lane, and will forcefully apply the brakes (when there is no issue, no danger, no possible way I am going to even be close to hitting another car) causing the cars behind me to come extremely close to rear-ending me! Or the car will decide I am going off the road when I am taking a soft curve, and it will sound a warning and try to turn the wheel. 3.) The display panel will go black for no reason. I then cannot use the navigation screen. It will randomly return after a few hours or after a day or two. 4.) The camera/display will get stuck on the reverse camera causing a visual disconnect as I drive forward, but can only see what is in reverse. (like seasickness). No idea what causes it or how to fix it. Eventually it corrects itself after a few hours/day+. 5.) Car will occasionally make a strange squealing noise after it has been turned off - no idea what that is, or what causes it. As a salesperson who spends many, many hours in her car, this vehicle has become a constant danger to both my livelihood and my life. I am afraid to drive it and I will not let family members drive it as I am afraid for their lives due to the issues stated above.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-30
  • VIN: 5J8YD4H80JL
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I received a letter from Acura in January 2024 regarding the engine crankshaft recall. I have called the two closest Acura dealerships in an attempt to get this fixed. The last that I was informed today by a dealership is "the part is expected to arrive in August, and we are booked out until December". This put me at getting this repair fixed at ONE YEAR after Acura sent me this letter admitting the crankshaft issue. My vehicle has stalled sporadically while driving for the entire two years that I have owned it. The letter from Acura states that this recall can cause the "rod bearing to prematurely wear and seize, causing engine damage which may cause the engine to run improperly or stall while driving, increasing the risk of fire, crash, or injury. I would like Acura to fix my car or put me and my family in a safe alternative.

SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
  • VIN: 5J8YD4H54JL
  • Components: SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Acura mailed me details about NHTSA Recall 23V-858 in February 2024. However, the letter stated that parts won't be available until over half a year later in the fall of 2024. While I understand that it takes time to develop and produce parts, a half a year wait seems like an unusually long time to have to wait while my vehicle is considered unsafe by NHTSA. This makes it seem like Acura is prioritizing producing parts for profit over safety.

Negative 2018 Acura Mdx car reviews

  1. Trenton Bechtelar 2024-08-13

The rear USB ports are located very close to the rear drinks holders and are not protected from spills. Unfortunately, my young boy spilled a small amount of liquid which caused a short circuit and rendered the car undriveable. Despite the high cost of repair, Acura client relations were unhelpful and unsympathetic. Due to this experience, I have decided to switch to Lexus and will not be purchasing another Acura. Although the car drives well, it lacks the attention to detail found in other luxury brands.

  2. Hiram Hudson 2024-04-16

When I started backing or moving forward, I noticed an uncomfortable clicking noise coming from the brakes of my 60k SUV. I brought it to the dealer and they said that the brake clicking noise is normal. Does this mean I have to listen to this noise forever? Unfortunately, they said yes because the manufacturer does not want to issue a recall.

  3. Ramon McKenzie 2024-02-17

The car may have some issues with acceleration and noise, particularly in windy conditions. Additionally, there may be a clanking sound from underneath the engine. Despite these concerns, it is important to note that the dealership has taken steps to address the noise issue. Overall, it may be worth considering other options before making a final decision.

  4. Finn Nitzsche 2024-02-07

The vehicle is a competent performer and solid, although it lacks luxury.

  5. Weston Cassin 2024-01-09

I previously owned a 2009 MDX which I purchased brand new and enjoyed for 12 years. Recently, I decided to upgrade to a newer model and purchased a used 2018 MDX FWD. However, I quickly noticed an issue that others had mentioned - the blurry windshield. Unfortunately, the blurriness is present around the entire perimeter of the windshield, with the left and right sides being the most noticeable. This can make turning and navigating parking lots a bit uncomfortable and even nauseating. After speaking with the dealership, I learned that this is a design issue present in all MDX models. Despite my disappointment, I decided to trade in the car after 6 months and purchased a 2019 RDX, which I absolutely love. If you are considering a 2017 MDX or newer, I highly recommend testing out the windshield design to see if it is something you can tolerate.

Positive 2018 Acura Mdx car reviews

  1. Rosario Davis 2024-11-22

This is my second car and my first luxury SUV. I recently went to shop for a certified MDX after selling my Honda CRV, and I ended up leasing a brand new MDX sports hybrid from the dealership. I find the looks and feel of the vehicle to be very attractive. The fuel economy, handling, and acceleration are great. The sports+ mode gives you the sports car feel along with the paddle shifters, which is a unique feature. However, it does make me wonder if it serves the purpose of an SUV and a sports car. I am considering buying this car after my lease ends, but I am in a dilemma since Acura is not yet an established name in hybrid motors. I am not sure if the vehicle will be reliable after a few years, but I am hopeful. What do you think?

  2. Lorenzo Bashirian 2024-11-03

I let my husband test drive this car. We bought it because of its safety record and a friend recommended it. Even though I'm only 5'2'', I still can't see the end of the car even with the seat all the way up. Unfortunately, we didn't get the technology package that would have helped with parking, so I'm a bit nervous about maneuvering in tight spaces. Here's hoping I don't accidentally hit a wall in my garage or another car in a parking lot!

  3. Jonatan Bruen 2024-10-29

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new MDX! It sounds like you did a lot of research before making your decision, and it's great to hear that the MDX met your primary needs. It's also wonderful to hear that your friends have been impressed with the ride and technology. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  4. Jordan Beer 2024-09-21

If you happen to be on the shorter side, you may find that the seat doesn't adjust high enough for your comfort. Additionally, it's worth noting that the RDX doesn't come with some of the comfort accessories that you may be used to, such as automatic tilt side mirrors, a heated steering wheel, or a telescoping steering wheel.

  5. Jamil Jakubowski 2024-09-15

If you're looking for an SUV, the 2018 Acura MDX Sports Hybrid is definitely worth considering. Not only is it fuel efficient, but it's also semi-autonomous thanks to the combination of LKAS and Adaptive Cruise Control. The infotainment system is great, especially with Apple Carplay. While the navigation is just okay, I'm still figuring out how to access the traffic info. This car is huge and has plenty of space for the whole family. We tested the seating capacity and drove for about an hour and a half with no complaints. However, I wouldn't recommend it for a very long drive as the middle seat in the second row is a bit uncomfortable to look at. Perhaps it can carry 6 adults and 2 kids? The acceleration is quite good for its size and we easily achieved better MPG than advertised. We topped it off with 28 and change, according to the fuel pump calculation. Overall, it's a really good car to have and we have no complaints so far, even though we've only owned it for less than a month.
