The Toyota Supra (Japanese: トヨタ・スープラ, Hepburn: Toyota Sūpura) is a sports car and grand tourer manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation beginning in 1978. The name "supra" is derived from the Latin prefix, meaning "above", "to surpass" or "go beyond".

The initial four generations of the Supra were produced from 1978 to 2002. The fifth generation has been produced since March 2019 and went on sale in May 2019. The styling of the original Supra was derived from the Toyota Celica, but it was longer. Starting in mid-1986, the A70 Supra became a separate model from the Celica. In turn, Toyota also stopped using the prefix Celica and named the car Supra. Owing to the similarity and past of the Celica's name, it is frequently mistaken for the Supra, and vice versa. The first, second and third generations of the Supra were assembled at the Tahara plant in Tahara, Aichi, while the fourth generation was assembled at the Motomachi plant in Toyota City. The 5th generation of the Supra is assembled alongside the G29 BMW Z4 in Graz, Austria by Magna Steyr.

The Supra traces much of its roots back to the 2000GT owing to an inline-6 layout. The first three generations were offered with a direct descendant to the Crown's and 2000GT's M engine. Interior aspects were also similar, as was the chassis code "A". Along with this name, Toyota also included its own logo for the Supra. It was derived from the original Celica logo, being blue instead of orange. This logo was used until January 1986, when the A70 Supra was introduced. The new logo was similar in size, with orange writing on a red background, but without the dragon design. That logo, in turn, was on Supras until 1991 when Toyota switched to its current oval company logo. The dragon logo was a Celica logo regardless of what colour it was. It appeared on the first two generations of the Supra because they were officially Toyota Celicas. The dragon logo was used for the Celica line until it was also discontinued.

In 1998, Toyota ceased sales of the fourth-generation Supra in the United States. Production of the fourth-generation Supra for worldwide markets ended in 2002. In January 2019, the fifth-generation Supra, which was co-developed with the G29 BMW Z4, was introduced.

Common 2021 Toyota Supra problems

The Toyota Supra 2021 is a high-performance sports car that has garnered attention for its impressive acceleration, road handling, and braking capabilities. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its issues. Here are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the Toyota Supra 2021:

  • Oil consumption: Some Toyota Supra 2021 owners have reported excessive oil consumption, which can cause the engine to go into limp mode. This issue is often attributed to faulty piston rings, and in some cases, Toyota has replaced engines or bought back cars from owners experiencing this problem.
  • Paint quality: Another issue reported by some Toyota Supra 2021 owners is poor paint quality, with some cars showing white bubbles or spots on the clear coat. This issue is often caused by heat damage, and can be addressed by taking a heat gun to the affected areas or leaving the car in the sun for an extended period of time. In some cases, Toyota has swapped out cars for owners who have experienced this issue.
  • Wind buffeting noise: Another common issue reported by Toyota Supra 2021 owners is a wind buffeting noise that occurs when driving with the windows rolled down. This issue is caused by turbulence created by the shape of the window, and can be addressed by installing an anti-buffeting kit.
  • Supply chain issues: The four-cylinder version of the Toyota Supra 2021 has been in short supply due to issues with the car's supply chain. This issue has affected production at Toyota's North American plants, and has made it difficult to determine which parts are holding up production.

While these issues are certainly concerning, it's important to note that the Toyota Supra 2021 is generally considered to be a reliable and high-quality vehicle. With proper maintenance and care, there's no reason a Supra shouldn't last many years of driving fun and performance. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and take the necessary steps to address them if they arise.

From thirsty fuel-hungry engines, to higher insurance costs and expensive repairs, keeping these cars on the road can be a costly endeavor. According to CarEdge, the Toyota Supra will cost about $4,950 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service.

Why did Toyota discontinue Supra?

By the end of 1998 the Supra's four-generation run in North America had also finished, which left the domestic market carrying on with lowered annual production runs until the car was finally axed in July 2002, primarily because it was deemed too expensive to meet forthcoming exhaust emissions targets.

Is the Toyota Supra a success?

Not even the new six-speed manual could draw more buyers to the Supra in a tough year overall for two-door sports cars. The Toyota Supra is a good car. More than that, it's a good car made better in 2023 with the addition of a six-speed manual transmission.

Are there any recalls on the 2021 Supra?

There are currently no recorded recalls for this car.

Is the 2021 Supra better than 2020?

2020 GR Supra owners weren't thrilled when Toyota gave the 2021 model a 47hp bump in the form of an improved engine just a year after launch. And while the 2021 outperforms the 2020 in showroom stock trim, what happens when each get the same upgrades and calibration? In that case, the choice is not so clear.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-27
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C09MW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Passenger side low beam headlight suddenly stopped working on the highway. Symptoms same as Toyota recall 19TA20, however vehicle is not part of the recall campaign. Vehicle displayed error "Right low beam malfunction". Dealership is not willing to investigate under recall coverage.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-30
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C04MW
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am extremely concerned this vehicle consumed .9 Quarts of oil which barely reached 1k miles from the oil consumption test performed by Toyota TECH TIP T-TT-0642-21 (Loyalty Toyota). If the vehicle had consumed the full one 1QT the engine could be deemed a replacement. By researching the internet, other 2021 Toyota 3.0 owners are having similar conditions at different intervals. According to the suggested maintenance interval by Toyota "Toyota recommends changing the oil every 12 months or 10,000 miles, or whenever the maintenance reminder light comes on, whichever comes first. So based on the Toyota I will incur 6.9 quarts for an oil change and 9 more quarts in between oil changes based on 10k miles intervals. It is feasible that to consume one quart every 3k, but one quart every 1k miles is extreme and the condition excessive and could worsen with vehicle mileage. I would like to get a resolution to this matter promptly.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C00MW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am not sure what components or systems failed or malfunctioned. I just know that randomly when I am at a complete stop and proceed to try to go onto oncoming traffic, the vehicle hesitates as if it is about to die out and then moves at a crawl for roughly 3-4 seconds and then kicks in and accelerates back to normal. I have taken the vehicle to be serviced 4 times but nothing has being resolved. Service department at the dealer says they can't find anything wrong. The last time I took it to the dealer they kept the vehicle for about 5 days to hook it up to the computer to see if it recorded anything that would help them resolve it but nothing was recorded. There are no warning lamps or messages appearing any of the multiple times this has happened. It is a safety hazard because several times I have been stuck in the middle of an interstate or street with oncoming traffic with the potential of injury or death if hit by another car vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-16
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C00MW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I own a new 2021 Toyota Supra and along with other owners of this new model, there is a safety issue that has been identified. There is a repeating issue with unresponsive/unpredictable throttle behavior for me and other Toyota Supra owners. It only happens on a cold start, when going in reverse on a slope (exiting the garage) and when traction control gets engaged (the wheel gets in the air for a second due to the curb/slope). After this maneuver either the engine gets stalled or the throttle starts to behave unpredictably. Specifically about the latter — pressing on the pedal does nothing for 2-3 seconds but then suddenly the engine revs go high and the car jumps ahead, even if the pedal is not pressed anymore. As if it's a 2-3 seconds lag between the pedal press and the wheel spin. This happened to me at least 20 times during the time of ownership (6 months). My trip to the dealership didn't help as I could not replicate the issue (only happens on cold start). I've contacted the manufacturer (Toyota USA) but they were unable to help and only documented the case. I have tens if not hundreds of Supra owners in an online community reporting the same issue. We are also aware that this issue is affecting owners globally, but Toyota has not yet made any statements about it. This issue is a safety concern and I almost got into an accident because of it. It requires attention before anyone gets hurt. Will be happy to assist and provide reports from other owners in the US. I've also attached the error codes that appeared at the time of the last accident and an invoice from the dealership. Thank you.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-16
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C05MW
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: After a cold start, the vehicle will have sluggish/hesitant acceleration from a dead stop initially while trying to pull out of an intersection after the brakes have been applied. This has occurred several times and other owners have reported similar issues. Additionally, under rare situations the vehicle will shift into neutral and shut off when encountering this problem (other owners have also reported a similar problem).
2022-07-05

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C09MW
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Drivers side tie rod has completely broken in half. This happened whilst just backing the car out of my garage and just starting down the drive at 1 mph. Had vehicle picked up and taken to the local dealer where I purchased the vehicle. Toyota refused to cover repair under warranty, saying I would have to pay for a $5000+ repair
2022-06-08

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WZ1DB0C09MW
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, AIR
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Toyota Supra. The contact depressed the brake pedal harder but it failed to operate as needed and the vehicle operated as if he was depressing the accelerator pedal at the same time. The vehicle crashed into the rear end of the vehicle in front of him. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact did not recall whether there were warning lights illuminated. The contact did not sustain any injuries and he was able to drive to the local body shop.
