2022 Acura Mdx problems

The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.
The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it was made to replace the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) which was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.
First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

- VIN: 5J8YE1H41NL
- Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: While driving on a major highway, several warning lights, including the brake warning, appeared on the dashboard. Simultaneously, the vehicle lost power steering, making it extremely difficult to steer and creating a hazardous situation for the driver and others on the road. The driver managed to pull over and turn off the vehicle. Upon restarting, the warning lights were gone, and the steering returned to normal. The car was taken to a local Acura dealership, but they couldn’t find any error codes or replicate the issue. After a week of driving without any problems, the car was brought back to the dealership. This time, a district Acura technician recommended replacing the steering rack. The dealership informed us that Acura would disassemble the old steering rack to investigate the issue further and determine if it was the cause. Acura will decide on a recall if enough vehicles are affected.

- Summary: I've recently been in touch with an Acura dealership about my vehicle's wireless charger not working. So shortly after purchase I made my complaint that the wireless charger pad is not charging my phone. They've replaced the pad but still not charging my Samsung ultra 22+ unless the car is parked and sitting still. They've asked me to allow time for researching the issue and taken all the make model details from my phone. Well sadly a few other things recently became noticeable to me as well and I will be following up with the dealership to address them as well as I'm not satisfied with my truck and the many issues I'm experiencing. 1) Jerked when coming to a stop to reverse into my driveway 2) A loud Thud noise could be heard inside my truck although I had the radio on when switching from park to drive or drive to park. 3) Car stopped kind of midway when reversing jerking me in the process leaving me wondering why or what was going on. 4) Engine would rev to 7000rpm even though I was going less than 45 mins per hour....just baffling honestly.

- Summary: I recently (11/9/23) took my 2022 MDX (22,00 miles) to the local Acura dealer for an issue with my windshield washers not working. They diagnosed the problem as the washer jets were clogged and said the replacement parts were on back order and they were not given a time when they would arrive. I am concerned that currently my vehicle is unsafe to drive during inclement weather conditions-- i.e. slush, muddy roads, etc. Acura customer service has not been able to provide any ETA on this issue
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-16
- VIN: 5J8YE1H87NL
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: This vehicle has an “integrated” gas cap where the fuel filler door acts as the gas cap. I can’t believe Honda engineering did ANY testing with this system since about 75% of the time when I fuel the vehicle, the nozzle gets stuck in the filler neck & the neck usually comes off the vehicle entirely when attempting to remove the fuel nozzle. This problem has been well documented on Honda/Acura forums for some time and I CANNOT BELIEVE Honda has not issued a recall as this represents a significant safety risk, not to mention potential emissions issues.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-20
- VIN: 5J8YE1H49NL
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: On 8/20/23 heading south on I-294 in Chicago : in center lane with cruise control on and no cars close in front of me when the car suddenly started a hard braking without warning. No orange warning to brake came on but engine warning light of left of dashboard was on. Immediately turned off cruise control. Car would not accelerate and came to a stop on the highway. Tried to start without success, then restarted and the car came on but in neutral. It had been placed in Park before shutting off. Car started and drove uneventfully back to Indianapolis. Took to Acura dealer and diagnostics were run showing that "position range" switch or sensor had been activated. Told it was safe to drive. We do not agree and are selling the car. Dealer, or service Dept was very lackadaisical about the incident. I will contact Acura corporate headquarters as well.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-22
- VIN: 5J8YE1H8XNL
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: On at least 5 occasions my automatic braking system has engaged when there were no obstacles in front of the vehicle. This has happened when driving at higher speeds (approx. 50 mph) on Lake Shore Drive in the city of Chicago as well at speeds below 30 mph along residential streets in my neighborhood. When I mentioned this to the dealership, I was told that perhaps there was interference from metal guardrails during the higher speed triggering of the brakes. The residential area incidents have occurred when there was no cars or pedestrians anywhere on the street. I am worried that I will be rear ended because the braking is occurring unexpectedly with clear roads ahead.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-19
- VIN: 5J8YE1H08NL
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The front bumper of the car is becoming unattached. There is a space underneath the headlights. The panel gap between the fender and front bumper has grown at the top, indicating the bumper is slipping from the top down. The problem appears to be getting worse. The plastic underneath the bumper is now becoming detached. I fear some of the clamps behind the bumper have failed. I also fear this may begin impacting critical systems and sensors behind the bumper. The Acura dealer denies any issue exists.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-27
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5J8YD9H44NL
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Acura MDX. The contact stated that while idling at a red light, a white-colored smoke began to emit from the front passenger tire wheel well. The contact was then alerted by a fellow motorist that the vehicle had caught fire. The contact exited the vehicle and called for assistance. The fire department arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire. A police nor a fire report was filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed from the scene to the dealer where it remained in their possession. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be either repaired or destroyed. The failure mileage was 26,000.

- VIN: 5J8YE1H89NL
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: As I was approaching an intersection the car engaged the brakes without reason and I was unable to drive the car. It forced the car to stop in the middle of a busy intersection. Thankfully no one else was around or behind my car, but this could have resulted in a very bad accident resulting in my being rear ended at high speeds. The car had 4 passengers, including 2 children in car seats. I am open to the car being inspected. I plan to take it to the dealership for this reason.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01

Acura has done an excellent job with the 2022 Acura. The vehicle is much quieter than my previous RDX, and it handles and rides exceptionally well, especially considering its size. The power is sufficient, and the shifting is even better than the previous 8-speed automatic. The new interior is a significant improvement, and the base AWD comes with the equipment that previous models required an upgrade to get. Overall, the '22' MDX has exceeded my expectations. The updated electronics are not perfect, but they are better than before. The base SH-AWD is the best value, and it comes with a panoramic roof as standard, along with all the necessary safety features. If you use your phone for navigation, etc., you'll be more than satisfied.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new 2022 MDX SH-AWD! It sounds like you made a great choice after test driving several other models. The exterior of the car is both elegant and sporty, and it's great to hear that it drives so smoothly. It's wonderful that you were able to take your family and pets on a road trip and that everyone was comfortable in the spacious second and third rows. The infotainment system may take some getting used to, but it's great that the Apple CarPlay makes everything so streamlined. The safety features are definitely a plus, especially the cruise control and lane assist. Overall, it sounds like you're really enjoying your new car and I hope it continues to bring you joy and comfort on all your future journeys!

I've only had the car for a few days, but I'm struggling to find the right words to describe how amazing it is. All I can say is that it's fantastic! During our first road trip, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was getting 24 mpg on the highway in Comfort mode, despite covering a lot of distance with some traffic on the way. The only downside for me at the moment is that the Acura Link app (which is available to all Acuras) is slow and poorly designed. However, I find that the console entertainment system screen, which many people dislike, actually works pretty well. Personally, I prefer it this way. Although I wouldn't recommend trying to use it as a touch screen while driving, the split screen option makes it easy to switch between maps and music seamlessly.

This is an excellent family car! I have driven it for 10,000 miles and it has been incredibly reliable, which is exactly what you would hope for. I absolutely love the technology, the ride, the looks, and how practical the cargo space is. The removable middle seat is a game-changing feature for my family of three kids, making the car incredibly flexible. The third row is also very usable for kids up to about 12. I also appreciate the cargo area flexibility and how you can turn the area behind the third row into a deeper cargo well or secure storage for camera equipment or a computer, etc. In my old cars, things would just roll out the back if I was parked on our steep driveway. The tech is fantastic, and I find the touchpad much better than a touchscreen where you have to reach far. Once you are used to it, which doesn’t take long, it is much nicer to use. I think having both a touchpad and a touchscreen is a great feature. The ambient lighting is also a nice touch. The SHAWD is fun and the engine is very smooth and responsive. I appreciate that most of the controls are physical buttons, which is much better than the touchscreen setup in our Audi. The only downside is the tire noise on some surfaces with the OEM tires. On OEM tires, this car is louder than my 10-year-old Honda or any other car I have ever owned on the wrong surfaces. However, I swapped out the tires at 8500 miles and the problem became much better with the car becoming much more pleasant at highway speeds on rough surfaces. Now the noise is acceptable on all surfaces. Many people have complained about the tires on Acura forums, but swapping them out has made the car much quieter. Overall, this is an excellent car, and I highly recommend it!On some surfaces the stock tires were fine, but on concrete freeways, the noise was really bad. However, my complaints are minor. I think they could have done a better job of creating interior storage for small items. For instance, an RDX style open area below the console. Additionally, I wish they had used less glossy trim. Overall, though, I am quite satisfied with the vehicle.

This is my 13th Acura (8th MDX). The makeover was overdue. I believe the ride and handling are on par with any other luxury SUV. I highly recommend the A-spec, which comes very well-appointed. The leather interior is a significant improvement. As for handling and ride, Acura has always excelled, but it is an obvious improvement. The infotainment system has a slight learning curve, but it is manageable. Just find a tech-savvy person to help set everything up, and you will be good to go! I used to think the MDX was just a family SUV, but not anymore! It's stylish and sporty, just the way it should be!

I recently upgraded from a 2018 MDX to a 2022 MDX (A Spec) and I must say, it's a serious upgrade. The handling and overall ride feels much better, and the interior is light years ahead. The transmission is also much better. The ELS surround sound is impressive, and the large sunroof is much appreciated. The exterior styling looks slick, and it feels bigger inside while not riding or feeling bigger outside. For me, the price was just right, not much more than a loaded Telluride or Pilot etc., and significantly less than an XC90 or Q7. The power is adequate. However, there are a few downsides. The tires are louder than they should be, and the touchpad has a learning curve and isn't the best. If you are using Apple CarPlay, the only way to change the radio channel is with the steering wheel dial to scroll through favorites. I wish it was a hybrid. Unfortunately, there are some tech gremlins that live within. There are known issues with iPhone 12, but I have an iPhone XR (with up-to-date IOS). My Sirius cuts out intermittently (50% of the time) when it connects to Apple Car Play, and then I'm forced to go to the home screen, choose FM, go back to the home screen, and choose Sirius if I want to listen to XM radio. It seems to especially dislike Waze. I videoed this issue with the salesperson so that there was no doubt. I was told by the Service Department today to delete the Waze app, while another tech told me I didn't have to do it. Bottom line, Acura is working on it, but it could take 6-8 months is what I was told. I asked if my problem was common, they said they've seen some issues, but I was their first with the new MDX. If you have an iPhone, especially if you like using Waze, test CarPlay many times over to see if you might have issues too.I used Waze and Apple Car Play all day without any issues on my 2018 MDX. Although one Acura Tech blamed Waze, I believe that the issue lies with Acura's system. I have experienced phone calls that disappear and switch back to XM, as well as the touchpad not responding and preventing me from answering incoming calls. I kindly request that Acura addresses these bugs and improves their system. Thank you.

The 2022 MDX was marketed as the new technology leader for Acura, but unfortunately, it seems they missed the mark on some basic features. For instance, the wireless charger is not compatible with Apple's iPhone 12 Pro Max, which can be frustrating. When I contacted Acura about the issue, they initially tried to blame Apple, but later acknowledged the problem. Additionally, the on-dash window display can cast a glare on the windshield on bright, sunny days, which can be distracting. While the MDX is designed to show the speed limit on any given highway, I experienced some inaccuracies with this feature during my drive. Despite these issues, I plan to give the vehicle another chance tomorrow and see how it performs overall.

The new 2022 Acura is pretty darn good, scoring 3.5/5. We recently purchased the 2022 MDX Tech Package for my wife, who is not a 'car person', and she really likes it as an upgrade to her 2017 MDX Tech. As a car person, I think it is a solid car with some missed opportunities. Here are my initial takeaways: 1) Context is important here, and let's start by saying that despite the price increase, this is still a car that is slotted at a fairly low price point for a 3 row luxury SUV. Compared to its Japanese rivals, Lexus and Infiniti, the MDX wins hands down. We really like the new aesthetic redesigns on the exterior and interior, which are a dramatic improvement. Although the infotainment system has been criticized for being finicky, I have found these concerns to be overstated. It is a tad finicky, but if you learn how to use it as designed, I think it nets as an asset to the car, not a detractor. Still, it is very surprising that this is not a touchscreen, given Acura was a pioneer for touchscreens in the 90s. However, it's not a bad interface, but you do have to learn and understand how they designed it. The engine is a bit growly and lacks quick shifts and acceleration, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, the 2022 MDX is a great car for its price point and is definitely worth considering. The engine is decent, but it could use some refinement. It's a bit growly and sluggish, but overall it's fine. While it barely meets the goal line for its segment in terms of refinement, it does manage to get over it. The steering and handling improvements between the 2017 and 2022 models are noticeable, making the car feel more planted and sturdier than the 2017 model. The interior refresh is also much needed and really strong, with a new all-digital gauge cluster and reclining second-row seats that are a big plus for long road trips. The leather is good enough, but could be better for the segment it competes in. Acura could improve their trim lines, as the Advance Package lacks value for its price and the A-Spec is essentially just a sport aesthetics/audio package that costs over 5k more than the Tech package. The Tech package is likely to be their best selling trimline, but unfortunately, some features have been removed from it to push the Advance trim level. Overall, the car is a great choice for families with its versatile second and third-row seating options. For example, it's strange that Acura eliminated remote start from the key fob in the 2022 Tech. This feature was present on the 2017 Acura MDX Tech and is also available on the base Honda Passport that my daughter drives. It's a shame that Acura decided to remove this feature. Additionally, Acura has divided the ambient lighting between the Advance and all other trimlines. The Advance gets ambient lighting throughout the cabin while all other trimlines only have one line of ambient lighting on each of the doors. This seems like a petty move on Acura's part. The Advance should have more features to distinguish it from the Tech, rather than the other way around. Overall, there isn't enough distinction between the trims, as they all have the same engines, transmission, gauge clusters, and steering. However, the tech package still offers the best overall value. In the end, we are happy with our purchase, especially at the price point of barely over 50k. It's a great car overall, and some small refinements could have gone a long way. If you are a driver or car enthusiast, you will be satisfied with the significant improvements, but not thrilled. If you aren't, you will still love it.

I purchased a 2022 MDX Advance 48 days ago and unfortunately, I have experienced two dangerous situations while driving. The first incident occurred when the power steering went out while I was traveling down the freeway at 78mph. Despite the difficulty in moving the steering wheel, I was able to safely pull over to the shoulder of the road. While waiting, I received a warning light indicating a braking system failure, specifically the hill assist mode. I immediately took the car to the dealer, but they were unable to find anything wrong. However, two days later, the car went into collision mitigation mode while I was traveling at 50mph, causing the car behind me to swerve and resulting in whiplash for me. The car is currently in the shop and I have been informed that Acura has only seen this issue once before. Although the necessary part has not yet been manufactured, I am researching my consumer rights at this time.

We purchased our 2022 MDX Type S on April 2nd, 2022 and were immediately impressed with its features and handling. The air ride made the car feel great and we had a very enjoyable dealership experience. Unfortunately, on May 11th, 2022, while traveling at just 21 miles an hour, the front left strut blew at only 888 miles on the odometer. This caused the front left corner of the vehicle to drop and all of the warning lights to go off. We were lucky to be close to home and were able to take the car there. The next day, we had the car towed to the local Acura dealership for examination. Although they initially told us that the issue was not engineeringly possible, they eventually discovered the problem and ordered the necessary part. Unfortunately, the part was backordered and it took 27 days for it to arrive. However, when it did arrive, it turned out to be the wrong part. The dealership ordered two more parts, but both were also incorrect. As a result, our vehicle has been in the shop for 32 days and counting. While we are disappointed with the situation, we remain hopeful that Honda will take action to assist us. We appreciate their apologies, but we would like to see some concrete action, such as an offer to replace the vehicle or compensation for our time. We remain loyal to the Acura brand, but we hope that Honda will take steps to redeem themselves in our eyes.
