The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.
The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.
First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

- Summary: While driving on a major highway, several warning lights, including the brake warning, appeared on the dashboard. Simultaneously, the vehicle lost power steering, making it extremely difficult to steer and creating a hazardous situation for the driver and others on the road. The driver managed to pull over and turn off the vehicle. Upon restarting, the warning lights were gone, and the steering returned to normal. The car was taken to a local Acura dealership, but they couldn’t find any error codes or replicate the issue. After a week of driving without any problems, the car was brought back to the dealership. This time, a district Acura technician recommended replacing the steering rack. The dealership informed us that Acura would disassemble the old steering rack to investigate the issue further and determine if it was the cause. Acura will decide on a recall if enough vehicles are affected.

- Summary: Steering issue: Car pulls to the right. After the dealership attempted three-repairs in same issue. The dealership re-aligned my car, but still present pulling issue, nothing changed. - Summary: Panoramic roof suddenly exploded with no apparent reason while driving around 45 mile per hour. The outside temperature from the gauge was showing 89 degree F. Road was clean and there was no sign of a rock hitting the roof. Luckily all the broken glasses were collected by the sunshade and did not fall inside the cabin where 2 kids were sitting on the second row seats. The broken glass could have seriously injured the driver and the passengers if the sunshade was open.

- Summary: I've recently been in touch with an Acura dealership about my vehicle's wireless charger not working. So shortly after purchase I made my complaint that the wireless charger pad is not charging my phone. They've replaced the pad but still not charging my Samsung ultra 22+ unless the car is parked and sitting still. They've asked me to allow time for researching the issue and taken all the make model details from my phone. Well sadly a few other things recently became noticeable to me as well and I will be following up with the dealership to address them as well as I'm not satisfied with my truck and the many issues I'm experiencing. 1) Jerked when coming to a stop to reverse into my driveway 2) A loud Thud noise could be heard inside my truck although I had the radio on when switching from park to drive or drive to park. 3) Car stopped kind of midway when reversing jerking me in the process leaving me wondering why or what was going on. 4) Engine would rev to 7000rpm even though I was going less than 45 mins per hour....just baffling honestly.

- Summary: I recently (11/9/23) took my 2022 MDX (22,00 miles) to the local Acura dealer for an issue with my windshield washers not working. They diagnosed the problem as the washer jets were clogged and said the replacement parts were on back order and they were not given a time when they would arrive. I can’t believe Honda engineering did ANY testing with this system since about 75% of the time when I fuel the vehicle, the nozzle gets stuck in the filler neck & the neck usually comes off the vehicle entirely when attempting to remove the fuel nozzle. This problem has been well documented on Honda/Acura forums for some time and I CANNOT BELIEVE Honda has not issued a recall as this represents a significant safety risk, not to mention potential emissions issues.

- Summary: On 8/20/23 heading south on I-294 in Chicago : in center lane with cruise control on and no cars close in front of me when the car suddenly started a hard braking without warning. No orange warning to brake came on but engine warning light of left of dashboard was on. Immediately turned off cruise control. Car would not accelerate and came to a stop on the highway. Tried to start without success, then restarted and the car came on but in neutral. It had been placed in Park before shutting off. Car started and drove uneventfully back to Indianapolis. Took to Acura dealer and diagnostics were run showing that "position range" switch or sensor had been activated. Told it was safe to drive. We do not agree and are selling the car. Dealer, or service Dept was very lackadaisical about the incident. I will contact Acura corporate headquarters as well.

- Summary: On at least 5 occasions my automatic braking system has engaged when there were no obstacles in front of the vehicle. This has happened when driving at higher speeds (approx. 50 mph) on Lake Shore Drive in the city of Chicago as well at speeds below 30 mph along residential streets in my neighborhood. When I mentioned this to the dealership, I was told that perhaps there was interference from metal guardrails during the higher speed triggering of the brakes. The residential area incidents have occurred when there was no cars or pedestrians anywhere on the street. I am worried that I will be rear ended because the braking is occurring unexpectedly with clear roads ahead.

I also fear this may begin impacting critical systems and sensors behind the bumper. The Acura dealer denies any issue exists.

I love my car even though it only has 500 miles on it. I had originally ordered a Ford Bronco, but after waiting over a year for it to arrive and seeing it in person, I cancelled my order and received my $500 deposit back right away. While the Bronco looked great, the interior did not feel like it was worth the $50,000 price tag. Instead, I decided to go for the Acura MDX, which was in the same price range and budget. The MDX is a great looking car, but I do wish the rear was nicer. I opted for the base SH-AWD since it already had Apple CarPlay, which allows me to easily talk to Siri for weather and directions. Additionally, the MDX has a proven V6 engine, unlike other brands that are using turbo engines. My previous car, an 18 TLX A-Spec V6, had zero issues in 80,000 miles, and I only had to replace the batteries and tires. It only took me two days to feel confident using the touch pad entertainment system, which doesn't leave any fingerprints. While the manual wasn't very helpful, I found YouTube to be a great resource. The mileage is 19-21 since I like to drive with a little pep. I was lucky to get this car, as I only had to wait for 3 to 4 weeks. Out of the 12 MDXs in transit, only 2 were not sold yet. The only discount available was $1000 loyalty, and the price was MSRP. If you're willing to wait a few more months, you might be able to get a better deal. However, I didn't want to wait, so I treated myself to an early Christmas present in December. While I can hear some tire noise, it's not too bothersome. The 9-speaker base stereo is good enough, and when the kids are watching YouTube on their cell phones, the sound projects through the car stereo. I'm sure there's tons more to do with the car, and since everyone seems to have a Palisades, Telluride, Pilot, or Highlander, the MDX is a great SUV alternative. I believe you would be happy with this car!

Quick Summary: The seat comfort is great for all-day travels. The car is very stable in a straight line on highways and it corners exceptionally well. The cabin is quiet, although there is noticeable tire noise on some surfaces. There are lots of nice features. However, the touchpad interface with the screen is complicated and frankly unsafe in a motor vehicle. It requires too much attention to do anything because it is not intuitive at all and requires the manual for even the simplest tasks. My 2005 MDX had a wonderful NAV system, but this one is way too complicated. If I had to buy this car again, I would just buy the basic model and use a Garmin GPS or even my iPhone instead.

I had some issues with my Range Rover and X5, so I decided to go back to Japanese cars. I was very impressed by the 2022 MDX. While it may not be as luxurious as a BMW or Range Rover, it is also much more affordable. In fact, it is 20k less than my X5 or 30k less than my Range Rover. The luxury is about 80-90%, which is good enough for me. Now, I no longer have to worry about getting stuck on trips with my new car, unlike what happened with my other two cars.

This car is living up to its advertisement so far. I recently took a 7-hour road trip and the car performed flawlessly. I made use of all the driving assist features and they worked perfectly. The only feature that was slightly disappointing was the cordless phone charger, but it wasn't a big deal as there were plenty of corded plugs available. On the interstate, I averaged 23.4 mpg at 77 mph. I'm still learning about all the features of my new MDX, but I'm enjoying it so far. Acura assistance has been great in sending me YouTube videos to explain different nuances. It's a great vehicle!

Don't let the negative reviews discourage you! This car truly has it all. With an outstanding ride, perfect handling, quality finishes, and plenty of room inside, it's hard to believe it drives so small. If you're looking for better gas mileage, consider the hybrid option. And if you're in the market for a more luxurious ride, you could pay 20 grand more for a German car, but why bother when this car has everything you need at a great price?

Hello! We recently extended our lease for the MDX and were excited to get the 2022 model. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the car shortly after bringing it home. The OnStar emergency system kept calling without stopping, which was quite alarming. We contacted the police and Sirius XM, but the issue persisted until my husband drove over an hour to the dealer the next morning. Since then, we've had ongoing issues with the infotainment system and the AC. To make matters worse, we also discovered a crack in the windshield and were told that front windows are sold out across the country. As someone who has owned 7 Acuras in the past, I'm disappointed with the experience so far. Despite living in MA with a lemon law, we haven't been able to find a solution. The car has been in the shop for more than 5 days on 6 different occasions. It's worth noting that the 2022 model seems to be experiencing many problems. Please be cautious if you're considering purchasing one.

Overall, I really love the look of the car and despite what others might say about the infotainment system, it has served me well. The only issue I have had after driving 12,000 km in a year is the rock chips getting stuck on the rotors backplate. Unfortunately, this has happened at least 20 times, and on average, it takes 3-4 days to resolve. It also makes the car sound less than ideal. I finally decided to take it to the dealer, and they informed me that they will have to take it apart every time, and there's nothing they can do about it.

The touch pad is not functioning properly, the keyboard input is not being tracked, and the USB sound is not working. Despite these issues, I will be returning the keys and exploring other options such as Audi and BMW.

Hello! I recently purchased a 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec, which is my 20th Acura since 1986. As an auto enthusiast, I have always preferred Acura for its reliability, design, and semi-luxury features. However, I have noticed a decline in quality with each new replacement over the years. My last decent Acura was an MDX in 2008, and since then, I have experienced many issues. I have always avoided European and American vehicles due to overpricing and reliability issues, but unfortunately, Acura seems to be catching up to those standards. I have had some trouble with my air conditioning, and while one dealer claimed it was normal, another found that the condenser was leaking. They fixed it flawlessly, and I appreciate the respect they showed towards my vehicle. I hope that Acura can address these issues, as I would hate to have to look elsewhere for a dependable company. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter!A couple of oil changes or mud guards seem more than reasonable. I hope Acura starts taking their customers more seriously and offers unconditional dedication.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on the MDX. While I appreciate the design, I have noticed that the piano black plastic all over the dash tends to age poorly. Additionally, the increased weight of the new gen MDX has made it feel a bit underpowered, which is a shame. I also wish that there was a touchscreen available for Apple Carplay. However, I do appreciate the 3.5L V6 engine. Overall, I think that the Hyundai Tuscan has a nicer interior and better tech, but I still appreciate the MDX for what it is.
