The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.

The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it was made to replace the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) which was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.

First generation (YD1; 2001)

Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.

The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).

The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.

The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • VIN: 5FRYD4H53HB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: On highway and switching lanes. All of a sudden ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE AND ALL DRIVER ASSIST LIGHTS CAME ON. Pull over light came on as well. HIT ON LEFT REAR SYMBOL CAME ON. Was never hit just a close car on driver left rear side when switching lanes. Made it home and vehicle wouldn’t switch back into drive mode. Acura didn’t do its due process and assumed a new transmission was needed. Replaced and a month later ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE sign starts flashing again. Now dealership is saying I need a new catalytic converter. Refused as I believe Acura has been incorrect about the diagnostic. They also stated my vehicle was in a collision and it wasn’t. They refused to check electrical issues and update software as these things are not in my control. It is my belief the car had a faulty collision warning which is causing other issues as well as Acura refusing to probably assist and diagnose without me continuing to be falsely diagnosed

ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-21
  • VIN: 5FRYD4H32HB
  • Components: ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I have a 2017 Acura MDX that had around 98k while I was driving down the highway at 65 mph all lights came on the dash and lost acceleration would not go over 45 MPH on a very busy highway. Had to have the vehicle towed per dealership- towed to Jay Wolfe Acura, Overland Park, KS. They said engine needed to be replaced due to the miss fire of rod knocking. There was no other option for replacing the rods had to replace the engine. In addition they replaced with an used engine that is a 2016 not even the same year. Dealer made us aware of the recall for this issue but advised us the Vin# is not under the recall so we had to pay out of pocket. I have tried to work with Honda and the dealership for reimbursement since there have been numerous vehicles with this exact issue but the Vin#'s not under the recall but with no help at all. I have provided documentation and explained the issues and the repairs. I have documentation but was not able to add it to the document listing below

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
  • VIN: 5FRYD3H58HB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The sensor under the hood malfunctions causing the car alarm system to go off and battery to get drained. Multiple batteries were changed because initially the thinking was that the battery needed to be replaced. Car alarm would go off in the middle of the night (with a new battery) when parked in the garage. All the electrical systems and lights would start turning off and on as if the car is possessed. Manufacturer is aware of the problem. Many others are complaining on the internet. There are variety of hacks including rigging the sensor that are suggested. Dealer said the entire control unit had to be replaced for $1122. Repair was made. They said when they run out of parts (control unit) they also disconnect the sensor. So you have cars on the highways that are no longer appropriately indicating when the hood is down (shut correctly or whether it is a false alarm. I called the manufacturer they didn't take responsibility (Case 14470102) with Acura/Honda.

The failure mileage was 112,000. The contact stated the reason for the engine seizing was due to broken connecting rods #2 & #5. The mechanic stated the only other reason the engine would seize is due to not having any oil at all in the vehicle, but there was oil present in the vehicle so it couldn't be that and that it was the connecting rods bearings breaking that caused it.

  • VIN: 5FRYD4H5XHB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving the car started to loose momentum and began stuttering until finally stopping abruptly and applying the electronic braking system. All warning alarms were illuminated on the dash. I was not even able to pull over completely off the road either putting me and my family in danger from not being off the road. Acura dealership service center informed me it was a bad high pressure fuel pump located on the engine block itself. There are recalls for this exact part neginnibg from 2018 on the acura MDX model. My model is a 2017 making me wonder if the recall should include earlier year models of acura mdx.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-06
  • VIN: 5FRYD4H93HB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Ive brought my MDX to the dealership service department 6 times for this issue, my car has been with the service department this last time since Nov 28th consecutively. In September I brought it in because my car would shift to park when the auto start/stop engaged, I would have to hit the brakes, shift back in to drive before I could take off. I was told there were 2 recalls that we remedied at that time. I brought my car back in a couple weeks later because the issue was persisting, I also started to get transmission and blind spot monitoring system alerts in those 2 weeks. I was told by the service department that the recall update wasn't "completed" when I brought it the previous time. The shift to park still was not fixed. At the 3rd time to the service department they replaced my starter. After this was done the issues with the car got worse, the car would give me transmission alerts, emission system alerts, power brake, blind spot, etc. & the "D" for drive on the dash would blink. Park would also blink. On the 4th trip they replaced my shifter assembly. After this the issues with the car further worsened and I would get all of the previously mentioned alerts, then my car would shift to neutral and another alert would pop up saying "pull over and park when safe to do so". Thankfully I was never on the interstate when this happened. I have to coast until I can pull off the road. After turning the car off then back on I was still not able to shift in to gear. I had the car towed to Acura, this (5th trip) time they replaced my transmission computer module. The car did the same thing the day after I picked it up. I had it towed back to them again, this latest trip they replaced my powertrain computer module, it did not fix the issue. My MDX has been at the dealership since Nov 28th because they do not know what to attempt to fix next. Im not being given any recourse. There are class-action lawsuits regarding this issue on the internet, so it is not unique to me

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-08
  • VIN: 5FRYD3H52HB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was driving on the interstate yesterday ([XXX]) and the transmission suddenly downshifted gears and also went to neutral. I managed to pull to the shoulder, but the sudden loss of power could easily have been life threatening at a more crowded time of day or in poor weather. The car was towed to McDaniel Acura in Columbia, SC (I was out of town) and problem confirmed. I also called my regular mechanic (a Honda specialist) and he said this was a known problem and referenced Acura service bulletin [XXX] which says to reload new software. Codes were: Transmission code P0716 Parking Brake System U0401-68 Parking brake warning light on Blind spot warning light on Why hasn't there been a recall on this??? It's a known problem and I could easily have been killed and hurt others. If not a recall, at least at least do something to alert owners so they can get it fixed proactively if they want, as opposed to breaking down on the side of an interstate for hours. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-30
  • VIN: 5FRYD4H81HB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: NHTSA Recal #19V-256 So according to Acura, this vehicle had the tail lights replaced in 2019 but the tail lights broke again in 2023. How do we know if Acura just replaced with same OEM tail lights but didn't fix the problematic tail lights. These lights are not a simple bulb replacement, it is costly in $600/Ea range to replace whole assembly.

Negative 2017 Acura Mdx car reviews

  1. Kurt Cruickshank 2024-11-22

I previously owned a Toyota Sequoia before switching to an Acura. The car handles excellently, especially when cornering. However, I have had some issues with the technology. The collision avoidance system tends to kick in when going from higher ground to lower ground, and even when making turns with another car approaching from the opposite side. Additionally, the memory seat systems and folding mirrors can be unreliable at times, which can be frustrating. Unfortunately, the Aha audio and Pandora features do not work, and replying to texts through the entertainment system is also not functional. It seems as though the car was not thoroughly tested by the manufacturers. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the car's handling. However, I am considering returning to Toyota or Lexus. I have contacted Acura's in-car tech support, but they have not been able to resolve the issues and have instead blamed Apple. Overall, I am disappointed with my experience with Acura.

Before considering purchasing this car, I highly recommend trying out the electronic system with the following caveats. As a long-time Honda buyer, I regret to say that this will be my last purchase from them due to my experience with the 2017 MDX's GPS and entertainment system. I urge you to test it out for yourself before making a decision. Unfortunately, the GPS is not functional and will not recalculate if you take a different turn than directed on the route. Instead, it will direct you off the road. The voice activated commands are also absent and not functional, which the dealer has acknowledged. Additionally, the MDX system is not compatible with iPhones, which is surprising given their popularity. Despite these issues, I hope that Honda will address these concerns in the future. Thank you for considering my experience.

The driving experience is quite nice, although it can be a bit firm for a luxury vehicle. As I have a sport model, I understand that some comfort may need to be sacrificed. However, the front seat is quite uncomfortable due to its limited adjustment and steering wheel. It can be a never-ending quest to find a comfortable position. Additionally, the firmness factor can make drives over 30 minutes unbearable for anyone over 6ft tall. Unfortunately, the technology in the vehicle is a total mess. While other companies are racing to compete with advanced user interfaces like Apple and Android, this system is reminiscent of a DOS computer. It can be downright dangerous to try and navigate the radio controls while driving at night, as they are buried in a mess of heater, AC, seat, presets, tuning, and an array of hard buttons and knobs, each with multiple degrees of function. It takes six steps just to change the map orientation from North to the direction of travel. Fit and finish are also lacking, with one glaring misaligned fuel door that jumps out at you. The service manager said they're all like that with no fix in sight. The overhead control panel also has me constantly calling Acura Link or emergency when I'm simply trying to open the garage. Overall, the platform is nice, but the implementation feels like it's from the 1980s. The price is way too high for this level of refinement. It's disappointing to see that the Pilot and Odyssey have both abandoned the two-display infotainment system, yet this vehicle still uses it. The 2018 model finally added CarPlay, but the goofy two-display system has not yet caught up to the Pilot, and the depreciation is far beyond disappointing.

I generally like the vehicle, but unfortunately the IPhone phonebook does not download and it seems that there is no solution. However, the dealer and Acura have been very empathetic and understanding. They have explained that Apple IOS updates are too frequent and Acura cannot react in a timely manner with a compatible fix for the A-Link system. Although this is frustrating, I appreciate their honesty. It is disappointing that the dealer did not provide the full story about the connectivity issue, but overall I am still a satisfied customer. The MDX has many great features, including a hands-free phone feature with voice activation, which promotes safe driving. I hope that Acura will find a solution to this problem soon. Despite this issue, I would still consider buying this car as I like most everything else about it and I am confident that Acura will do their best to resolve the issue.

The fuel door on my MDX does not align with the surface of the car body, and I noticed that the case door did not close tightly before I purchased it. At first, I thought someone had accidentally opened it until I tried to close the door. The dealership informed me that it was a manufacturing problem, and they did their best to adjust the door, which has improved the situation. I reported the issue in the customer survey, and Acura Client Relations opened a case. While they have not yet found a repair solution, they have informed me that this may be a characteristic of the car. Although I am disappointed with this answer, I am confident that Acura Client Relations is doing their best to address the issue.

In 2017, we purchased the Acura MDX SHAWD Advance after conducting extensive research and test driving various SUVs such as the RX350, GLC, and JX. We were particularly impressed with the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive performance. The MDX offers great value and is well-equipped with safety features. However, it is worth noting that the transmission shifting may not be as smooth as some of the other SUVs we considered. Overall, we highly recommend the Acura MDX SHAWD Advance.

  2. Ladarius VonRueden 2024-10-23

We shopped for a long time, but the MDX remained our favorite throughout. It's such an elegant, stylish, athletic, and comfortable car! We think it's great!

  3. Nathanial Lakin 2024-10-10

The 2017 MDX is quite different from the 2015 model. The tires are larger, and it features a 9-speed transmission and a finished exhaust system instead of hidden exhausts with reflectors. The finished rear end is similar to what is on Mercedes, which is a great touch. Although I don't particularly like the leather or shall we say 'fake-leather' interior, it's still a great vehicle. The transmission and fake leather caused me to take a point off the 5-star rating. On the other hand, it has great paint and nice chrome accents that the 2015 model didn't have. It's not terrific in the snow, but that's mainly due to the touring tires. The grill is also a nice touch, which is another reason why I traded in my '15 for the '17 model. People seem to really like the vehicle, which is why there are a ton of them out there! I got a great lease price on the tech package, thanks to the change of year model, and opted for only 7500 miles a year. Acura rolled in the 2015 model with only 14,000 miles under, and I'm only paying $433 a month for 36 months. I'll most likely purchase the vehicle at the end of the lease for only 30K!

The GPS and map display may seem a bit outdated, and there are no surround parking cues available.

  5. Demetrius Rosenbaum 2024-07-11

It's great to hear that you didn't go for the typical Q7, QX60, RX350 or XC90 and instead chose the MDX Advent (Advance with Entertainment Package). This SUV is truly the leader of the pack when it comes to features and value for money. I was impressed to hear that you managed to purchase it for several thousand dollars below the competition, even from an Audi dealer! The ride, comfort and performance are top-notch, and the safety features, including the birds-eye camera, are a great addition. The power folding mirrors are also a handy feature to have. Although the dual screens may take some getting used to, they are a great feature, especially with the navigation at eye level. It's also great to hear that Acura has replaced the
