The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2023 Gmc Sierra 2500 problems

The 2023 GMC Sierra 2500 has been subject to several recalls, which are listed below along with their respective fixes.

  • Fuel System, Diesel Recall: Certain 2017-2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, and GMC Sierra 2500, 3500 vehicles equipped with a dual fuel tank option are affected by this recall. The rear fuel tank may collapse and prevent the fuel pump from transferring fuel to the front tank, resulting in an engine stall. The fix involves dealers inspecting the fuel tank and fuel pump module, replacing them as necessary, and adding a vent hose to the rear tank assembly. Repairs will be performed free of charge.
  • Seat Belt Retractor Assemblies: Certain 2017-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500, and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles are affected by this recall. The front seat belt retractor assemblies were built with the incorrect torsion bar, causing these vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies." The fix involves GM replacing both front seat belt retractor assemblies, free of charge.
  • Tailgate Opening While Driving: Certain units of the GMC Sierra HD are affected by this recall due to an issue with the tailgate's electronic gate-release switch. The switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, causing the tailgate to inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is in Park. If the tailgate were to become unlatched while driving, unsecured cargo may come out of the truck bed and create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash. The fix involves certified GM technicians inspecting affected vehicles and replacing the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge.

It is important to note that these recalls are not specific to the 2023 GMC Sierra 2500 model year, but rather affect certain models from previous years. The 2023 GMC Sierra 2500 does not have any safety recalls issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as of April 24, 2024.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-18
  • VIN: 1GT49NEY1PF
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2023 GMC Sierra Duramax Diesel with 10 speed Allison Transmission with 28,000 miles can't be driven. Currently at the dealership due to a transmission valve body problem, codes P0700 & P0747. While driving I felt a hard shift and the truck jerk. The engine light came on and my truck went into low power mode. Let it sit over night and truck would shift fine. This happened 3 times over a 1 month period. After getting to the Chevy dealer they told me the issue is with he valve body and said they have been having multiple trucks come in with the same problem. They have a truck in there since May (4 months!) They told me there is no ETA for the part. I've read this is a common issue happening on 2023 & 2024 trucks like mine. I've read that the problems have been going on for over 1 year. This is ridiculous for a $90,000.00 truck. GM should be putting new transmissions in them or buying the trucks back. I'm considering contacting an attorney to inquire about the lemon law or what other avenues I can take regarding getting the truck fixed, and fixed properly.

My transmission lost 7th gear and it came to an immediate stop in the road because of it. tires screeching and all. truly embarrassing that you can spend 83,000$ on a truck and it be such a peice of junk.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-23
  • VIN: 1GT49NEY2PF
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: No incident as of yet. The wide angle driver mirror cannot be set high enough to see down the side of the truck. It is a factory installed towing mirror. I have to lower my my seat all of the way and I cannot see the top rail of the bed. The mirror won't let me see down the side of the truck which makes it really dangerous when I pull my 32' fifth wheel trailer. I took it to the dealer and they told me at first ( I purchased the truck on 01-22-2023) the mirror is one of 6 items that warranty doesn't cover. Then they told me it is very difficult to get the manufacturer to authorize replacement. The dealer eye balled a mirror just from standing in front of it on a lot truck and said he couldn't see a difference. All I can see out of it is basically is the rear tire. I called GM and the person looking into it was transferred after about a week. The person that took over asked me to give him a week to look into it. He called me today and said he hasn't had a chance yet that he needs a couple of more days.
