volvo logo

The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2016 Volvo Xc70 problems

The Volvo XC70, produced between 2008 and 2016, is known for its rugged design and spacious interior. However, like any vehicle, it has been subject to certain common problems reported by its owners.

  • Fuel Pump Failure: Some Volvo XC70 owners have reported issues with the fuel pump, causing the car to stall. This issue can be particularly dangerous if it occurs while driving, as it can lead to a sudden loss of power. The fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel to the engine, and if it fails, the engine may not receive enough fuel to run properly.
  • Power Steering Failure: Another common problem in the Volvo XC70 is power steering failure. This issue can make it difficult to turn the steering wheel, especially at low speeds. Power steering is an essential feature in modern vehicles, as it helps reduce the effort required to turn the steering wheel.
  • Uneven Wheel Wear: Some Volvo XC70 owners have reported issues with uneven wheel wear, particularly in the front wheels. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as misaligned wheels or worn-out suspension components. Uneven wheel wear can lead to decreased fuel efficiency, poor handling, and increased tire wear.
  • Transmission Shifting Problems: There have been reports of automatic transmission shifting problems in the Volvo XC70, particularly in the post-2013 models. These issues can manifest as rough shifting, delayed engagement, or slipping. Transmission shifting problems can be caused by various factors, such as low transmission fluid or internal wear and tear.
  • Engine Reliability: Some Volvo XC70 owners have reported issues with engine reliability, particularly in the 2.4-litre diesel engine . These issues can manifest as decreased performance, increased fuel consumption, or engine failure. Engine reliability issues can be caused by various factors, such as poor maintenance, manufacturing defects, or wear and tear.

In conclusion, while the Volvo XC70 is known for its rugged design and spacious interior, it has been subject to certain common problems reported by its owners. These issues include transmission failure, fuel pump failure, power steering failure, uneven wheel wear, transmission shifting problems, and engine reliability issues. If you are considering purchasing a Volvo XC70, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues and to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

2024-01-24

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-17
  • VIN: YV4612NK6G1
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: The seatbelts on the front driver and passenger side have failed to release when trying to unbuckle. This is a hazard. If there was a moment where it's imperative to leave the car (fire, water, etc) Driver and passenger could get locked in their seatbelts without the ability to exit the vehicle. Volvo would have covered it if the factor warranty was still active. My complaint wa ignored while the vehicle was under warranty. Now that it is out of warranty I am forced to replace the failed parts out of my pocket.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-12
  • VIN: 99999999999
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: VOLVO. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARD TO A DEFECTIVE ENGINE.
2023-02-27

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-03
  • VIN: YV440MBX2G1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: We have experienced three major defects with this vehicle. First and most concerning is the intermittent blackout of the driver's instrument panel (aka driver's information module, DIM). Second most conerning is the defect in the trailer lighting control module that leaves stop, running and signal lighting on our trailer unreliable. Both of these defects appear to be design or manufacturing defects that can be corrected by upgrading the relevent parts. The third defect is in the design of the traction control system that has no physical switch readily accessible to the driver for temporary use in emergency situations, but rather is buried in the MyCar software selection, labeled "Sport Mode." This design requres a driver to override the traction control during the entire driving session, leaving the car without traction control when it might be needed during the same inclement road conditions that would warrant momentary deactivation of the system. Ie, in icy conditions one would want traction control on most times, but not when starting on ice or mounting snow berms at driveway exits, etc.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-06
  • VIN: YV440MBKXG1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Car stalled at an intersection twice. We took it to a repair shop after the first instance and they told us the battery had died, though they were able to charge it and it restarted fine. They could not find any other issues. We continued to drive it and two days later the car died at another intersection just after my wife had picked up our kids from school. We had it towed to the dealer this time. I relayed the recall information for an earlier or different model of my car that sounded like the same issue: the starter motor fuse. I believe this to be the same issue even though my car did not show up on the recall.
2018-10-15

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-01
  • VIN: YV4612NK2G1
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: THE BACKUP CAMERA IS MALFUNCTIONING NOW BECAUSE THE VIEW FIELD IS PARTIALLY BLOCKED BY THE VEHICLE BODY. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE'RE SOME OTHER CARS (INCLUDING SOME NEW CARS AT DEALER) HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I VISITED THE RETAILER AND THEN CONTACTED THE CUSTOM CARE CENTER OF VOLVO. HOWEVER, THE RESPONSE IS DISAPPOINTING (HONESTLY, UNACCEPTABLE) BECAUSE I WAS TOLD THAT VOLVO CANNOT FIX IT.
2018-03-22

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-19
  • VIN: YV4612NM9G1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: WHEN COLD SOMETIMES NOT ABLE TO SHIFT FROM PARK TO ANY OTHER GEAR OR NEUTRAL. AFTER DRIVING, ABLE TO SHIFT FROM DRIVE OR REVERSE BACK TO PARK BUT GET MESSAGE SAYING "CAR IS NOT IN PARK - SHIFT TO PARK". WHEN IN NEUTRAL SOMETIMES NOT ABLE MOVE SHIFTER FROM NEUTRAL TO DRIVE OR PARK. WHEN CONTACTED DEALER FOR SERVICE THEY SEEMED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM. MY CONCERNS ARE NOT BEING ABLE TO DRIVE CAR ON DEMAND, AS WELL AS NOT KNOWING IF CAR IS TRULY IN PARK OR NOT.
2018-03-14

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-12
  • VIN: YV4612NKXG1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: OWNER ON INTERSTATE AT POSTED SPEED (65) HEARD EXPLOSIVE SOUND OF THE SUNROOF EXPLODING. NO OTHER CARS WERE AHEAD OR ALONGSIDE, AND NO EVIDENCE OF A THROWN OR DROPPED OBJECT WAS APPARENT AT THAT TIME OR AFTERWARD. FORTUNATELY THE SUNSHADE SHIELDED HER FROM MOST OF THE BROKEN GLASS. DEALER CALLED IT AN 'ACT OF GOD' AND WOULD NOT HONOR A WARRANTY CLAIM FOR THE DAMAGE ' ESTIMATED AT OVER $1,100. INSURANCE COMPANY IS COVERING ALL COSTS, INCLUDING RENTAL CAR, UNTIL REPAIRS ARE COMPLETED.

Negative 2016 Volvo Xc70 car reviews

  1. Arden Hirthe 2024-11-13

I purchased this car brand new in November 2014 and absolutely loved it. The interior and exterior were beautiful, and it was so comfortable to drive. The car had great pick-up speed and cargo space, making it perfect for my frequent road trips around New England. However, I did have some concerns about the tires. Unfortunately, I experienced multiple flats and had to replace a total of 11 tires in less than 4 years. This made me feel unsafe and insecure about driving, especially on long trips. Despite my attempts to address the issue with the dealership, I did not receive the level of concern and attention that I had hoped for. Ultimately, I decided to trade in the car for an Audi Q7 in January 2019, which I feel much more confident and safe driving.

Positive 2016 Volvo Xc70 car reviews

  1. Ross Rippin 2024-10-16

We recently purchased a Volvo XC 70 platinum T6 3 liter, which had an EPA mpg of 17/24 mpg. After previously owning two BMW X1s in 2014 and 2015, we were a bit concerned about the mpg and its impact on the environment. However, after taking it on a major road trip of 430 miles in California, we were pleasantly surprised. Despite the bumpy roads, heavy traffic, and stop-and-go interstates, we achieved an overall round-trip gas mileage of 25.6 mpg with cruising speeds of 70-80 mph. The best feature of this car is the front seats, which are incredibly comfortable and perfect for my wife's spinal issues. Although the back seats could use more legroom, they are still better than the X1s we've owned. The car runs smoothly, has plenty of acceleration, and minimal road noise. While the steering is a bit light and lacks the intuitive feeling of a performance car like a BMW X1, the handling around curves is slightly above average. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase and look forward to breaking in the engine with more miles.I'm looking forward to more enjoyable road trips and I expect to find the car to be superior. I also anticipate slightly higher mpg on long road trips. Although there are no available safety ratings for this model, it is a Volvo, known for its safety features. The exterior body is very solid and the finish is excellent. After purchasing three new cars in the last 24 months, we've learned that it's important to do your homework before making a purchase. This includes researching the invoice price and reading reviews about the car's handling, among other things.

  2. Keshawn Douglas 2024-09-10

This is the European truck, which is used for a variety of purposes. It has gained popularity due to its versatility and durability. It is used by families for towing, Scotland Yard police as a police car, and even by Russians for creating YouTube sensations. The ride is smooth and comfortable, especially on highways, and the front and rear sensors are very helpful. The steering is not too heavy and has a smooth, rubbery feel. Long distance driving is not tiring at all. The acceleration is amazing on highways and the seats are very comfortable. The infotainment and voice control are reliable once you get used to them. Although there is a bit of rear seat area squeaking, it is likely due to natural built quality. It is important to note that the Bluetooth connectivity with iPhones has some issues, as the voice volume of the other person is too low to be useful. Additionally, the two round front lower lights cannot be controlled by any buttons and do not project much light. Overall, the XC70 is a great vehicle with some minor drawbacks.

  3. Eric Hoeger 2024-07-16

Our 2015 XC70 T6 has been an absolute delight! It boasts great acceleration when needed and ample storage space. Traveling in the winter has been reassuring with the sure footing of all-wheel drive. The ride is superb, thanks to the legendary Volvo seats. In fact, we find the seating to be even more comfortable than our 22 S60. We've had outstanding servicing at Volvo of Rochester (ask for Jim and Paul). We've only needed wear and tear repairs, routine maintenance, and new tires. Don't forget to utilize the rear storage and the ability to add a roof carrier for longer trips with family. We anticipate keeping our Volvo in our stable for many years to come!

  4. Jamarcus Kub 2024-06-25

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on your vehicle. It's a real workhorse and handles like a dream. It's perfect for carrying all sorts of things and getting around town. The air conditioner is a lifesaver, especially in the hot and humid climate of South Florida. I did notice that the radio isn't working due to a knob on the console, but that's an easy fix. Unfortunately, the transmission timing belt is due for a change at 103,000 miles, which can be quite expensive. If you're thinking about upgrading to a newer version, I completely understand. I believe this is your 7th vehicle in 37 years, which is impressive! If you're looking to sell, I think you could get anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000 for it, which would be a great help in offsetting the cost of a new one. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can do to help.

  5. Tod Satterfield 2024-06-12

This is my fifth Volvo Wagon and I absolutely love it! I upgraded from my 20-year-old/260K V70 after the turbo seized and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The car is luxurious, zippy, beautiful, and comfortable. My 6'2
