The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 1975 Ford F350 problems

The 1975 Ford F350 is a heavy-duty workhorse with a rich history, but as with any vehicle, it may encounter certain problems over time. Here are some common issues reported by owners of this model:

  • Spark Plug Issues: The 1975 Ford F350's spark plugs can bond to the electrodes, causing difficulty when trying to remove them. This issue is especially common in 2004-2008 models, where a weld at the bottom of the socket holds the plug down. Extracting the remainder can be a challenging process, even for professional mechanics.
  • Aluminum Hood Corrosion: During the mid-2000s, Ford received numerous complaints about corroded auto parts, particularly on the hoods of 2000-2007 F-150s. This issue also affected fuel tank straps in some trucks, leading to recalls for models like the Heritage edition 2004 F-150.
  • Airbag Deployment Issues: Undesired driver-side airbag deployment has been reported in 2005-2006 F-150 models, leading to a recall of over 144,000 trucks. If considering a used 2005-2006 F-150, it is essential to ensure that this recall was addressed.
  • Window Component Failure: Drivers of 2004 and 2005 F-150s have reported problems with the power regulators on door-side windows, causing window panes to drop into the doors, become stuck, or make a grinding noise.
  • Loud Ticking/Knocking Noise from the Engine: Problems with the cam phaser have been reported in these F-150s, causing clicks and knocks from the engine. While Ford dealers initially claimed these sounds indicated nothing problematic, auto experts advise F-150 drivers to be cautious about the Triton 5.4-liter V8 due to costly engine issues.
  • Ford F-Series Transmission Problems: Ford truck transmission problems were common on F-Series models of the early and mid-1980s, particularly in the 1973-1979 F-Series.

When considering purchasing a 1975 Ford F350, it is crucial to be aware of these potential issues and thoroughly inspect the vehicle before making a decision. Regular maintenance, including fluid level inspections and replacements, can help prevent many transmission problems. Additionally, consulting automotive manuals and online repair tips and tutorials can assist in troubleshooting and repairing any issues that may arise.
