- Summary: THE STEERING WHEEL PADDLE SHIFTERS AUTOMATICALLY TURN THEMSELVES OFF. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS IN SITUATION WHERE ENGINE BRAKING IS NECESSARY (INCLEMENT WEATHER, STEEP DOWN GRADES. WHEN USING THE PADDLES TO DOWN SHIFT AND SLOW THE CAR, THEY WILL AUTOMATICALLY TURN OFF, THE CAR THEN SHIFTS INTO HIGHER GEARS, CAUSING THE CAR TO ACCELERATE (WHEN GOING DOWNHILL OR WHILE SLOWING IN SLIPPERY CONDITIONS). THE CAR CAN BE PUT INTO "SPORT MODE", BUT THIS CAUSE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO BECOME VERY TOUCHY, WHICH IS UNSAFE IN SLIPPERY CONDITION. THE PADDLE SHIFTERS SHOULD NEVER AUTOMATICALLY TURN THEMSELVES OFF, IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE DRIVER THAT ENGAGES AND DISENGAGES THEM.

THIS IS CONCERNING AS THEIR HITCHES ON ALL OTHER CARS INTERACT WITH THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEMS TO ALTER ITS BEHAVIOR WHEN TOWING. FURTHER THEIR EUROPEAN HITCH DOES NOT END UP UNDER THE REAR BUMPER ENERGY ABSORPTION STRUCTURE LIKE ALL OF THE AFTER MARKET ONES AVAILABLE (LIMITING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ENERGY ABSORPTION ABILITY IN A REAR IMPACT. THEIR DEALERS HAVE NO RECOMMENDATION TO MAINTAIN A SAFE VEHICLE WHILE TOWING AND YET VOLVO CLAIMS A TOWING CAPACITY. I'VE ALSO CONTACTED VOLVO VIA THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT LINE AND THEY HAVE NO ANSWER FOR HOW TO SAFELY TOW AS WELL AS EMAILING THEM AND GETTING NO RESPONSE.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-07-08
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I AM A SINGLE MOM WITH AN AUTISTIC SON, AND TWO OTHER CHILDREN. I USED TO WORK FOR MITCHELL VOLVO IN SIMSBURY, CT AND JUST PURCHASED MY 2015.5 VOLVO V60 IN DECEMBER AND ONLY HAVE 10K MILES ON IT. I DRIVE, LITERALLY, THREE MILES PER DAY, EXCEPT FOR MY FIRST INCIDENT: IN EARLY JULY 2016, I DROVE TO ROCHESTER, NY FOR A FUNERAL FOR MY UNCLE. UPON PULLING OUT INTO RT 495, I HIT THE GAS, AND NOTHING. I HAD MY AUTISTIC SON AND 87 YEAR OLD FATHER IN THE CAR, I PANICKED AS CARS WERE COMING, AND CAR WASN'T MOVING, I SLAMMED ON THE GAS, AND THE CAR BANGED INTO GEAR AND WENT. BROUGHT IT INTO MICHELL'S AND A TOTAL TRANSMISSION FAILURE WAS FOUND ON THE ENGINE. IT WAS "SUPPOSEDLY FIXED". AFTER THAT, THE CAR SHIFTED FUNNY AND THE GEAR SHIFT ITSELF WAS LOOSE AND YOU DIDN'T FEEL THE TIGHTNESS OF FEELING THE CAR GO INTO GEAR AS YOU SHIFTED FROM PARK TO DRIVE, ETC. THEN TRAVELED TO THE CAPE TWO WEEKS LATER, WAS BACKING UP, BACK UP CAMERA WAS ON, THEN HEARD THE ENGINE REV, AND LOOKED DOWN AND CAR HAD SLIPPED INTO NEUTRAL. I CALLED MITCHELLS AND THEY COULDN'T GET ME IN FOR THREE WEEKS SO THAT I COULD HAVE A LOANER VEHICLE. THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW, MITCHELL VOLVO, AND THEY ARE FINDING NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION! THIS CAR IS A DEATH TRAP! I'VE BEEN A FAITHFUL VOLVO CUSTOMER, HAD A NIGHTMARE 2005 XC90 AND IF YOU LOOK AT MY RECORD WITH VOLVO, I HELPED 20 OTHER FAMILIES WITH THE SAME ISSUE RECEIVE FREE SECOND AND THIRD FAULTY TRANSMISSIONS FROM VOLVO. I DON'T TAKE FAULTY/POORLY DESIGNED VEHICLES THAT CAUSE MY FAMILIES SAFETY TO BE PUT ON THE TABLE LIGHTLY. I HAVE ALREADY FILED ON THE EDMUNDS BLOG YET AGAIN! I WILL BE FILING WITH THE NTSB, EDMUNDS CONSISTENTLY, AND THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT CONSUMER PROTECTION AND MOTOR VEHICLE UNLESS VOLVO IS FOR ONCE WILLING TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE THIS TIME. THIS CAR HAS SO FEW MILES, VOLVO SHOULD DO SOMETHING.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-08-24
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: THE CAR, 2015 VOLVO V60, BEGAN SHUTTING OFF ITS MOTOR WHEN I CAME TO A STOP OR WHEN I PUT IT IN PARK AND A FEW TIMES WHEN I CAME TO A HARD STOP. THIS WOULD REQUIRE MY PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK, IF NOT ALREADY, PRESSING THE BREAK PEDAL AND PUSHING THE START BUTTON. DURING THESE TIMES, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK UP AS IT SHOULD IF A DRIVER PURPOSELY TURNED THEIR CAR OFF. THE SYMPTOM WOULD HAPPEN INTERMITTENTLY. I LEFT MY CAR FOR A WEEK WITH THE LOCAL VOLVO DEALER HOPING THIS SPORADIC PROBLEM WOULD BE SUCCESSFULLY DIAGNOSED. A SERVICE DEPARTMENT TECH DROVE MY CAR FOR THE WEEK. AT THE END OF THE WEEK, I WAS TOLD MY CAR DID NOT EXHIBIT ANY OF THE SYMPTOMS, BUT, IF A WARNING APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD, THIS WOULD PRECIPITATE A DIAGNOSIS. TWO MONTHS LATER THE PROBLEM BECAME MUCH WORSE AND SCARIER. MY HUSBAND WAS SAFELY PASSING ANOTHER CAR WHICH WAS GOING TEN MILES UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT ON A TWO WAY ROAD. AT THE POINT HE IS BESIDE THE OTHER VEHICLE, THE VOLVO LOSES POWER. HE APPLIES EXCELLERATION, BUT THE CAR DOES NOT RESPOND. THE CARS WHICH WERE BEHIND MY HUSBAND HAVE CLOSED THE GAP HE JUST VACATED MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM TO MOVE BACK IN POSITION. NOW ONCOMING TRAFFIC IS HEADED HIS WAY. FORTUNATELY, HE IS ABLE TO CUT IN FRONT OF THE SLOWER MOVING CAR LEAVING LESS THAN A FOOT OF CLEARANCE BETWEEN HE AND THE OTHER CAR. THIS TIME THE WARNING "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE" IS DISPLAYED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE CAR IS IMMEDIATELY TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALER WHO, AGAIN, DRIVES THE CAR FOR A WEEK AND FINDS NOTHING WRONG. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE DASHBOARD WARNING APPARENTLY CARRIES NO SIGNIFICANCE, BECAUSE A CODE IS NOT PULLED DURING COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS AND THERE IS NO OTHER RECOURSE. I AM SENT HOME WITH AN UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS VEHICLE. I BOUGHT A VOLVO FOR ITS SAFETY AND RELIABILITY. HOW IRONIC! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER. SHAME ON VOLVO. BUYER BEWARE.

That's a great combination of comfort, acceleration, fuel economy in the 4cyl version, and cargo space!
-
I've got 68k miles on this car and it has not disappointed. It's fast, nimble, comfortable, and great looking. The only maintenance costs I've had are oil changes and tires. The build and finish are above my expectations. This is my second Volvo and the honeymoon phase is still going strong!

It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your V60 with sports package for the last 3 months and have already put 5000 miles on it! The drive is nice, and the handling and ride are very good. Although there's a slight hesitation after stepping on the gas, it's still a pleasure to drive. The back hatch is adequate for groceries or a small dog, like your mini Aussie. However, it might not be the best fit for bikes, even with the seats down. While the legroom for backseat passengers is a bit tight, your pre-teen kids seem to be doing just fine. The front seats, on the other hand, are exceptionally comfortable. It's great that your V60 has hi-tech & eco features, even though they might be a bit spotty. The auto engine shutoff when stopped might not be the most reliable, and the MPG is well below EPA estimates. Overall, it sounds like you're enjoying your V60 and making the most of its features!
-
This car is fast, comfortable, beautifully designed, and luxurious. It's great to see how far Volvo has come with this thoroughly modern vehicle. The new 2 litre engine is totally smooth, and the 8 speed auto always places you in a sweet spot for torque. The top notch electronics features illustrate that accidents will be preventable one day. Overall, it's the best value in premium wagons, and the design is pure and classic.

When searching for a vehicle, I prioritized safety ratings and reliability. I ultimately chose a small SUV with high safety ratings and good reliability. The model I have has decent performance, with AWD and the older 2.5 T5 engine paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. I appreciate the known reliability of the older engine, and although the newer engine offers better performance and fuel economy, it wasn't available in the model year I was looking for. The 2015.5 model year is important for the upgraded electronics, including better navigation and an improved Sensus setup. The car also has a built-in wifi hotspot (with free ATT service until Volvo figures out how to pass through charges), OnCall (Volvo's version of OnStar), and free Sirius traffic for 4 years from the original sale date. The seats are very comfortable, and the Climate package ensures that everything that should be heated or cooled is done automatically. Although the storage is smallish for a wagon, it is still useful. The styling of both the outside and inside is nice and very Swedish, which is a good thing. I was glad to see that Geely didn't distract from that or the safety of Volvo when they purchased the company. The safety features are great, including a backup camera and sensors with a cross-traffic warning. The City Safety function hasn't been used by me, but it's nice to know it's there.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with this car that I purchased about 115 months ago with the intention of using it for my new family. Unfortunately, when I went to bring my newborn home, I realized that the rear-facing car seat did not fit properly. The front passenger seat had only about 3 inches of legroom, which made it impossible to use. After realizing that the car did not meet our needs, I tried to trade it in at 7 different dealerships, but was disappointed to find that the car had depreciated by more than 50%. The sticker price of the car was $42,534, but after just 15 months, the trade-in value was only $20,000. If you are considering purchasing this car, I would recommend planning on keeping it for a long time to avoid losing money.

If you're looking for a car that is stylish, performs well, and has seamless phone connectivity, then the V60 might not be the best fit for you. While the Bluetooth entertainment system is available, it requires the driver to physically use their phone to navigate through music selections. Additionally, the car lacks power and may not be suitable for transporting a large family and bags across busy roads. While selecting manual shift mode can help somewhat, the shifting is delayed and may cause issues in urgent situations. In terms of style, the V60 may not be the most appealing option. However, it's important to note that everyone has different preferences when it comes to style. We appreciate the innovation that Chinese ingenuity has brought to the world of Volvo. Thank you for considering the V60.

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my Certified Pre-Owned V60 from Cape Cod Volvo. I purchased it in June 2019 with about 45,000 miles on it and it was a solid car. However, I did encounter an issue with the engine burning out after three services later (every 10,000 as recommended) at 83,000 miles. Unfortunately, the warranty had expired and there was no clear explanation from Volvo. My only recourse was either to pay about $6,000 for a used engine to be installed, or sell. As you can imagine, the difference from what I owe on the car and what it is worth now is significant, not to mention the diagnostics, towing charges, and time and energy spent on recovering. Despite this setback, I remain hopeful and grateful for the time I had with my V60. Thank you for listening to my story.

The car experienced a persistent issue with power loss, which was addressed by rebuilding the engine at 29k miles. However, the issue persisted due to pre-detonation of spark plugs, which caused the timing to retard and resulted in power loss. This was a safety concern, especially when merging, as it occurred without warning. Despite Volvo acknowledging the issue, they claimed it would happen under certain conditions and were unhelpful in resolving the issue. A search under Volvo Drive E Clicking provides more information. After reaching out to the CEO, the defective motor was finally replaced at 39k miles, and the car has been performing flawlessly since then.
