2017 Volvo V60 problems

The Volvo V60 is a compact executive station wagon (estate car) produced by Volvo Cars related to the S60 executive sedan. The vehicle was first released in autumn 2010, facelifted in 2014, and is in its second generation since 2018.
The second generation V60 was launched in 2018 based on the Volvo Scalable Product Architecture platform. Both generations feature a "Cross Country" variant with a slightly increased (60-mm / 2.4-inch) ground clearance and ride height.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-21
- VIN: YV140MEM4H1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The sunroof on this vehicle shattered while I was driving. A loud bang and a shower of glass ensued. There were no vehicles directly ahead of me or aircraft flying overhead when the incident occured. I wasn't insured and was able to pull off the road to inspect. No flying object hit the glass as some suspect. The glass shattered on its own. There have been no issues with the sunroof and opening/closing/tilt functions operated as normal. The vehicle will be inspected and repaired at a dealer.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-02
- VIN: YV140MEK5H1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I am afraid, someone may get KILLED. . . The car unexpectedly just starts to 'free wheel'. It all started approximately 6 weeks ago and progressively became worse. IT IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM. I am a retired Software Engineer and worked in military defense for a government contractor. - - so, I know a software problem when I see it. My car just started to 'free wheel' (meaning, I have no control over the transmission or gas pedal). I was driving over by our local College and stopped for a light. When the light turned Green, I took my foot off the brake and pressed the accelerator. I went No where. . . (me - what is WRONG)? I pressed the accelerator again - nothing (the engine wouldn't even 'rev'). The car is still in gear, but nothing is happening! ! ! Now, what do I do? (the car is 'free-wheeling' - HELP - - no control or transmission). I am at a Green light and going NO WHERE. Then, in Panic (thinking this maybe a Software), I put the transmission in 'neutral' for a few seconds and then back in gear and put my foot on the accelerator. There is a hesitation, but the 'engine catches (can hear it slowly rev) and I start to move. Because it started while I was starting up from a STOP (at a STOP light), I thought it might have something to do with the 'Auto Stop / Start' function (actually, this exacerbates the problem). Then, Christmas day, coming back from visiting it happened again (I forgot to turn OFF the 'Auto Stop / Start') which is what I thought was causing the problem. BUT what made it much more DANGEROUS was: I was doing a 'left turn' on a busy street and almost got KILLED. So, all seemed to be OK, if I (remember) to turn OFF the 'Auto Stop / Start' function. UNTIL today, I was making a right turn on a busy street. As soon as I was over the railroad tracks, the car started to 'free-wheel'. ([XXX], NOW WHAT DO I DO)? I coasted to the right curb and 'glanced' over at the 'Auto Stop/start - it was ON (Oooh, NO). It just gets worse. . SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-01
- VIN: YV1A0MSW1H1
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: THE FRONT SEATS ROCK/WOBBLE BEYOND AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL AND PRESENT A SAFETY ISSUE. IT'S VERY SUBTLE BUT ONCE YOU NOTICE YOU CAN'T NOT NOTICE. IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AT VERY LOW SPEED WHEN BRAKING (I.E. PULLING OUT OF MY GARAGE AND SWITCHING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE) OR EVEN IN SUCH SIMPLE SITUATIONS AS GETTING INTO THE CAR. IT'S THE BACK OF THE SEAT THAT WOBBLES, BUT THE BOTTOM. I TOOK MY CAR INTO MY LOCAL MECHANIC AND HE SAID THAT THE ONLY FIX IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SEAT AS IT'S CAUSED BY A POORLY-DESIGNED PIVOT THAT IS PART OF THE SEAT ASSEMBLY. HE SAID HE THINKS THERE MIGHT BE A FIX OUT FOR THE 2018 MODEL YEAR BUT THAT THE 2017 HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE THE SAME DESIGN AND EVEN THOUGH HE HAS SEEN A NUMBER OF OTHER V60S WITH THIS ISSUE COMING UP. IT'S SIMPLY POOR DESIGN THAT IS PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE TO CORRECT. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING A CAR WITH A LOOSE SEAT AS I WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN SHOULD I EXPERIENCE A CRASH. WILL THE WHOLE BACK OF THE SEAT COLLAPSE IF IT'S ALREADY LOOSE? I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE OR REPLACED FOR FREE BY VOLVO.

BUT STILL JERKY FROM 1ST GEAR TO 2ND GEAR. BRING IT TO SUBURBAN VOLVO, THEY RESET EVERYTHING OF THE SOFTWARE. THINGS GET BETTER A BIT, BUT THE PROBLEM CAME BACK SEVERAL DAYS AFTER THAT. IN MARCH 2020, BRING IT TO SUBURBAN VOLVO AGAIN, TECHNICIAN THERE OPENED A CASE WITH VOLVO USA, VOLVO USA TOLD THEM TO REPLACE THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION. JOB GOT DOWN AFTER A MONTH. IN LATE APRIL, PROBLEM COM BACK AGAIN, THE NEW TRANSMISSION JERKY FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR WHEN IT IS COMPLETELY WARM, (JUST GET OFF THE HIGHWAY) I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY WILL HANDLE IT NEXT. I WILL GO THERE AGAIN ON 4/30 I ALSO HEAR POPPING NOISE FROM THE FUEL TANK EVERY TIME I TOP UP THE FUEL TANK. IT SEEMS LIKE IS THE BAD FUEL PUMP CAUSES THE PROBLEM.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the Volvo overseas purchase program. My partner and I picked up our v60 at the plant in Sweden and it was an amazing experience! We then spent 10 weeks traveling through Europe, including the Scandinavian countries and the Baltic States, in our new v60. The car handled great in many different weather and road conditions, and the seats were the most comfortable I've ever experienced on a long road trip. I highly recommend the Volvo overseas purchase program! However, I do have one complaint. After a set amount of time, I am not able to use my auto start function without paying a yearly fee. As the owner of the car, I believe I should be able to use all of its components without any additional fees. Unfortunately, I've heard that some other auto makers do the same thing, which I believe is unfair. Thank you for listening to my experience!

I've been driving the V60 for about a month now and I absolutely love it! Two years ago, I had to replace my 2006 Saab 95 wagon due to some expensive repairs. Since Saab went out of business, I didn't want to keep pouring money into it. I decided to lease a Buick Regal, which had better technology but lacked the handling and performance of my Saab, and didn't offer any improvement in gas mileage. As my lease was coming to an end, I researched a lot of different cars and discovered that the V60 had even better technology features than the Buick, and its performance and handling were almost as good as my Saab's. Plus, it has much better fuel efficiency! The V60 is also incredibly comfortable, making it a car that I plan on keeping.

As a long-time Saab car enthusiast, I have owned several models over the past 20+ years, including the classic 900 Turbo, 9000 CSE Anniversary Edition, and 9-5 Aero wagon. My 2003 9-5 Aero wagon was a great car to drive, being very comfortable with plenty of cargo space. However, with a daily 90-mile commute and 266k miles on the clock, it was time to replace it. I was looking for a car that was as comfortable as my Saab, which was not an easy task. Most cars have poor front seats for long-term driving comfort, but I needed a car that could move around a lot of stuff and had plenty of cargo space, hence my interest in wagons. I briefly considered the 328 wagon, but the seats were uncomfortable to me and you sit too low in the car. My wife recently leased a 320, and I sat in every car at the dealer from 2 to 7 series, but all of the seats were far less comfortable than those in my V60. I also have a lot of concern about their long-term reliability since I try to keep my cars to 200k+ miles. I also considered the VW Golf wagon, but it wasn't as quiet on the freeway as I would like. However, I found the perfect car for me - a new 2015.5 V60 T5 Drive-E with sport seats and suspension. I have enjoyed it every day since I bought it. It's now nearly 3 years old and already has 70k miles and has not had any reliability problems. I recently replaced the tires with the same Pirellis that came with the car. It is quiet and smooth at highway speeds and corners tightly and confidently. The front seats are very comfortable and need a little time to break in. Front visibility is great with no glare. I like the control layout and enjoy listening to satellite radio every day. Bluetooth connection to my phone is reliable, and telephone sound quality is excellent. My only complaint was the stock acceleration was not quite as strong feeling as I enjoyed with my Saab. However, that was fixed, and the car transformed when I recently bought the Polestar Performance Optimization software for the car.It can be easily downloaded and installed at any Volvo dealer. With the new software, it now passes very quickly on the freeway while also improving the throttle and transmission behavior. Highway gas mileage is unchanged. In my opinion, the V60 T5 Drive-E with Polestar software is the best currently available balance of comfort, safety, driving experience, fuel economy, and storage capacity. I highly recommend it!

I can't believe that this is a wagon! It outperformed the 3 series BMW in my test drives and continues to impress. We were initially skeptical about the MPG claims, but it does fairly close to it (if you can resist the temptation to enjoy the surprising pickup). We generally consider ourselves 'green drivers' and get better than usual miles, but I still doubted the 37mpg highway claim. Yet, this morning, I got 33 in a 15mi city drive from my kids' school to the office (A/C on as it was ~90F outside), but this is Raleigh NC traffic (mild). This weekend we had the car loaded with 2 large adults, 2 kids (in giant, heavy, 5 point boosters), 2 10gl coolers full of drinks and ice, a small bag of clothes, 2 large picnic blankets, 2 folding chairs, and a 60lbs dog, but we still got 29mpg in a mix drive (60mi city/25mi hwy) of 85mi (round trip). The trunk space is great. All that stuff fit and the giant poodle still could stretch out on his bed. The software for the trip computer and other things could be simpler, and the brakes feel too smooth for people that enjoy the sporty action of an Audi, but the car is excellent in every other way. Oh, and the seats are amazing! Updates: Over a year in and we continue to be very happy with this Volvo. It is comfortable, has ample space for us, is versatile, drives like a sports car (except for the soft/smooth brakes), and gets decent mileage if driven accordingly. The only snag is that the cell app is impossible to get working for us, so I don't get to turn it on before getting out of the house, etc.

It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your V60 with the sports package for the past 3 months and have already put 5000 miles on it! While there may be a slight hesitation after stepping on the gas, the handling and ride are very good. It's also worth noting that the V60 is much smaller than the boxy Volvo wagons of old, which can be a plus for some drivers. The back hatch is perfect for groceries or even a small dog, like your mini Aussie. However, it may not be the best fit for bikes, even with the seats down. Additionally, the legroom for backseat passengers is a bit tight, but it's great to hear that your pre-teen kids are comfortable. The front seats, on the other hand, are exceptionally comfortable. While the hi-tech and eco features may not be perfect, it's still great to have them available. It's also worth noting that the auto engine shutoff when stopped can be a bit spotty, and the MPG may be lower than expected based on EPA estimates.

Starting at 110,000 miles, things went south. However, before that, I had a great experience with my V60 T5 Drive E. 2.0T. The 'E' stands for economy, and it really works on highways, providing a 3 to 5 mpg increase if you keep the speed reasonable. The car runs at under 1800 RPM at 70 MPH, which is amazing for a 4 cylinder. Everything in the car feels high quality, with great texture and no rattling. Just be careful with the rear brakes, as the electronic emergency brake tends to eat the inside pad. I bought the car in 2018 with 66,000 miles on it, and it's over 91,000 now. I haven't had any issues (until 110k). The leather is really nice, but it can get ungodly hot and stay that way for the entire drive. The air conditioning is slow to cool the car, but once it's cool, it works well. The navigation system is a bit cumbersome to program, but the audio system is amazing. I can even stream music from my phone via Bluetooth. Overall, I really love this car. However, the ongoing maintenance nightmare has been hard to justify. At 110,000 miles, the car started burning $8 quarts of oil, often twice between oil changes. I was told it was normal for that mileage, but at 142k, the car failed on a 600 mile drive. I learned that the oil burning was a result of a clogged PCV system that caused oil from recirculated crank case gasses to be sucked into the engine intake and burned, a failure that is well known but not talked about. At the same time, I lost the thermostat assembly, which cost $220 and required the intake to be removed to replace it, totaling $560. At 143k, I lost 2 mass air flow sensors, which cost $750 to replace. The sensors were over $300, which is expensive for a $30 part on most cars. At 150k, scheduled maintenance cost me $1100 for timing belt and water pump.Don't be fooled by the water pump at timing belt change. It's electric and can be easily replaced when it starts failing. The pump from Volvo costs $720, but thankfully there are aftermarket pumps available for $380 to $580. At 156k, I started experiencing idle racing issues where the engine was running at very high RPM with revving. The first part needed was a purge valve, a small and simple solenoid that cost $154. At 158k, they still haven't finished fixing it and the car is still racing and revving. Now it's a valve cover vent and air intake vent that broke because the crank case gasses still aren't being recovered correctly and the pressure blew out these cheap plastic vents. This car was a new drive train for 2015, and there were no long term high mileage test results available when I bought it. It turns out that, like many European cars, the hype is in the luxury appointments and handling, not the reliability. I stuck it out with my little sport wagon because I really do love this car. However, I drive 600 miles a week, and no matter how much I love it, when it starts stranding me constantly, it's time to part ways. I hope your Volvo experience is better. Make sure to have the PCV system inspected regularly for clogging. I suspect that is where all my failures are coming from, that ventilation of the internal pressure failed, and it found every weak spot it could to escape.

I was really excited when I purchased the car. It was less than a year old with only 10k miles. However, I have encountered some issues with the computer system since it reached 30k miles. Unfortunately, the owner's manual is only available on the computer system, which makes it difficult to access. Additionally, checking the oil and other levels is complicated and requires the use of the car computer system. To get an oil change, I have to go to the dealership or find a specialized mechanic, which can be challenging. Overall, my experience has been frustrating. I would advise caution before purchasing a car with this type of computer system.

If you're looking for a car that is stylish, performs well, and has seamless phone connectivity, then the V60 might not be the best fit for you. While the Bluetooth entertainment system is available, it requires the driver to physically use their phone to navigate through music selections. Additionally, the car lacks power and may not be suitable for transporting a large family and bags across busy roads. While selecting manual shift mode can help somewhat, the shifting is delayed and may cause issues in urgent situations. In terms of style, the V60 may not be the most appealing option. However, it's important to note that everyone has different preferences when it comes to style. It's worth considering all options before making a decision. Finally, it's important to acknowledge the innovation that Chinese ingenuity has brought to the world of Volvo.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with this car that I purchased about 115 months ago with the intention of using it for my new family. Unfortunately, when I went to bring my newborn home, I realized that the rear-facing car seat did not fit properly. The front passenger seat had only about 3 inches of legroom, which made it impossible to use. After realizing that the car did not meet our needs, I tried to trade it in at 7 different dealerships, but was disappointed to find that the car had depreciated by more than 50%. The sticker price of the car was $42,534, but after just 15 months, the trade-in value was only $20,000. If you are considering purchasing this car, I would recommend planning on keeping it for a long time to avoid losing money.

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my Certified Pre-Owned V60 from Cape Cod Volvo. I purchased it in June 2019 with about 45,000 miles on it and it was a solid car. However, I did encounter an issue with the engine burning out after three services later (every 10,000 as recommended) at 83,000 miles. Unfortunately, the warranty had expired and there was no clear explanation from Volvo. My only recourse was either to pay about $6,000 for a used engine to be installed, or sell. As you can imagine, the difference from what I owe on the car and what it is worth now is significant, not to mention the diagnostics, towing charges, and time and energy spent on recovering. Despite this setback, I remain hopeful and grateful for the time I had with my V60. Thank you for listening to my story.
