  • VIN: YV140MEK1G1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Volvo dealer confirmed Excessive oil burn due to bad piston rings. Volvo USA recalled other cars with the same problem but refused to recall mine. They offered instead partial payment for the fix. Should be full payment to repair.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-04-07
  • VIN: YV140MEM2G1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Interior (center) rear view mirror glass migrates over time to point downward, so you see the backseat rather than out the back window. Have to manually adjust it to point back up approximately every 500 miles. Suspect it happens as you drive over bumps. Have had two dealerships look at it (Gorges in Omaha, NE and Willis in Clive, IA) and both reported no issue found. Obviously, neither of them had a tech drive the car 500 miles. Issue has persisted since purchasing the car in 2017 with 12,800 miles on it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-03-14
  • VIN: YV1A92SWXG1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

WHILE DRIVING BACK HOME AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, A GRINDING NOISE WAS HEARD ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKES WERE METAL-TO-METAL AND THAT A CALIPER BOLT WAS MISSING. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE ROTOR, BRAKE PADS, AND THE MISSING BOLT. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT LATER, WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE SERVICE BRAKE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-26
  • VIN: YV140MEM4G1
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: EXPLODING SUNROOF. ON FRIDAY 26 JAN 2018, AT 4:10PM, I WAS DRIVING IN ALABAMA ON INTERSTATE 65 NORTHBOUND MILE AT MARKER 180 IN THE MIDDLE LANE AT 70 MPH. THE TEMPERATURE WAS APPROXIMATELY 55F AND OVERCAST WITH NO RAIN. THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME FOR AT LEAST A HALF A MILE NOR TRAFFIC TO THE SIDE OR REAR FOR AT LEAST A QUARTER OF A MILE. I HAD NOT PASSED UNDER A BRIDGE FOR AT LEAST A MILE. I SAW NO OBJECTS COMING FROM THE FRONT OR ABOVE. AT THIS TIME, I HEARD A LOUD REPORT LIKE A GUNSHOT FOLLOWED BY WIND NOISE. GLASS STARTING FALLING THROUGH THE SUNROOF SHADE VENTS. I PULLED OVER AND OBSERVED THAT THE SUNROOF HAD SHATTERED. THERE WAS NO OTHER DAMAGE TO THE ROOF (DENTS OR SCRATCHES) OR VEHICLE. I THEN DROVE ANOTHER 4 MILES HOME AND TOOK A PHOTO OF THE DAMAGE. I CONTACTED THE DEALER WHO SAID HE HAD HEARD OF THIS KIND OF INCIDENT BEFORE BUT TOLD ME TO CONTACT MY INSURANCE COMPANY. I CONTACTED THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND THEY WILL PAY FOR THE REPAIR MINUS MY $250 DEDUCTIBLE.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-05
  • VIN: YV4612HK4G1
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: AS WE WERE DRIVING ON I-95 NEAR SUMMERVILLE SC ON JAN 5TH IN THE EARLY AFTERNOON (APPROX. SPEED 70 MPH) THE SUNROOF SUDDENLY IMPLODED SOUNDING LIKE A GUNSHOT GOING OFF. THERE WAS NO PROJECTILE HEARD OR SEEN PRIOR TO THE SUDDEN SHATTERING. THANKFULLY, THE INTERNAL COVER PREVENTED THE MAJORITY OF GLASS FROM ENTERING THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HEAR OR SEE A PROJECTILE, THE ONLY CONCLUSION WE CAME TO WAS THAT THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL MAY HAVE LED TO THE SUDDEN CRACK (THIS TRIP TOOK PLACE DURING THE BOMB CYCLONE IN THE SOUTH). ON THE OTHER HAND, THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN EQUALLY COLD TEMPERATURE IN TAHOE AND IN BEND AND BESIDES, THIS IS AUTOMOTIVE GLASS SO IT SHOULDN'T HAVE SHATTERED AS COMPLETELY AS IT DID! WHEN DRIVING TO WORK I FREQUENTLY HEAR DEBRIS FROM TRUCKS HITTING MY WINDSHIELD AND IT TO DATE HAS NOT SHATTERED LIKE THIS EVENT WITH THE SUNROOF!

VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-10-29
  • VIN: YV140MEM9G1
  • Components: VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT APPROX. 65 MPH, THE SUNROOF EXPLODED WITH GLASS BLOWING UP TOWARDS THE SKY. AT FIRST, I HEARD A LOUD "BANG" THAT SOUNDED LIKE A GUN FIRING AND THEN SHARDS OF GLASS STARTED RAINING DOWN UPON ME FROM ABOVE. SHARDS OF GLASS ALSO FILLED THE REAR SEAT AREA. IF MY WIFE WERE DRIVING THE CAR, SHE PROBABLY WOULD HAVE PANICKED, CAUSING AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING OTHER VEHICLES. ALSO, IF THERE WAS A CAR IMMEDIATELY BEHIND MINE, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN SHOWERED WITH GLASS SHARDS FROM THE GLASS SHOOTING UP FROM MY VEHICLE. IF A MOTORCYCLIST, IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN GOOD. THE ENTIRE SUNROOF GLASS THAT REMAINS IS TOTALLY SHATTERED. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-05-29
  • VIN: YV140MEK5G1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN 150 MILES ROUNDTRIP. ON WAY BACK, ONE MILE FROM FINAL DESTINATION WHILE IN LEFT TURN LANE WAITING FOR ONCOMING TRAFFIC SO LEFT TURN COULD BE COMPLETED, THE AUTO START/STOPPED CAUSED THE ENGINE TO SHUT OFF AS THE CAR CAME TO A STOP. WHEN BRAKE WAS RELEASED CAR FAILED TO TURN BACK ON LEAVING CAR STRANDED IN MIDDLE OF INTERSECTION. ATTEMPTED TO RESTART CAR UNSUCCESSFULLY. ALSO, CAR INSTRUCTED DRIVER TO PRESS "START BUTTON" UNTIL IT STARTED. HOWEVER, WHILE START BUTTON WAS DEPRESSED THE EMERGENCY FLASHERS/HAZARD LIGHTS WOULD GO OFF AND HAVE TO BE MANUALLY REENGAGED, MAKING IT DOUBLY UNSAFE.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-12-27
  • VIN: YV4612HK5G1
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I GOT A FLAT TIRE AND PUT THE SPARE DONUT TIRE ON THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. I COULD NOT CONTROL THE CAR. I KEPT GETTING PULLED TOWARD THE RIGHT, IT WAS ESPECIALLY WORSE WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKE. I DID NOT DARE DRIVE MORE THAT 10-15 MILES AN HOUR. I MANAGED TO GET TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE AND WAS SURPRISED, HE HAD NEVER FELT ANYTHING LIKE IT BEFORE. AS A TEST HE PLACED THE TIRE ON THE BACK WHEEL AND IT DID EXACTLY THE SAME THING. HE PUT IN A COMPLAINT TO SEE IF THERE HAVE BEEN ANY OTHER ISSUES AND HEARD NOTHING BACK. I CALLED CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS TO COMPLAIN. THE GENTLEMAN READ FROM THE OWNERS MANUAL THAT SPARE TIRES WILL NOT PERFORM LIKE OTHER TIRES. THEY ORDERED ANOTHER DONUT, THINKING MINE MIGHT BE DEFECTIVE, IT TOO PERFORMED BADLY. ANOTHER CAR THE SAME MODEL AS MINE WAS TESTED AND THE TIRE PERFORMED BADLY AS WELL. I EXPLAINED THE DANGER THESE TIRES POSE AND I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING WITH AN INFERIOR SPARE. AS COMPENSATION THEY GAVE ME A FULL SPARE MOUNTED ON A WHEEL. THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT DOES NOT FIT IN THE SPACE ALLOTTED FOR THE SPARE AND TAKES UP MOST OF MY CARGO SPACE. MY MAIN ISSUE IS THAT THEY ARE ALLOWING PEOPLE TO DRIVE THINKING THEY HAVE THE SECURITY OF A SPARE, EXCEPT THE ONE PROVIDED CAN CAUSE THE DRIVER TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR.

  • Summary: Volvo Cars of N.A., LLC (Volvo) is recalling certain 2008-2016 V70 and XC70, 2007-2016 S80, 2011-2018 S60 and V60, 2016-2018 S60 Cross Country, 2014-2020 S60L, 2009-2015 S80L, 2009-2016 XC60 and 2015-2018 V60 Cross Country vehicles. The flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue over time, causing the seat belt to not secure the occupant in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: An unsecured occupant has an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat belt anchor cable for both front seats. The recall began December 10, 2020. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo's number for this recall is R10029.
2019-11-26

  • Summary: Volvo Car of USA LLC (Volvo) is recalling certain 2011-2017 S60, S60I, V60, S60CC and V60CC vehicles. A component within the door latches may break, making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
  • Consequence: A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
  • Remedy: Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will replace all four door latches, free of charge. The recall began April 9, 2020. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo's number for this recall is R89978.
2016-11-02

Negative 2016 Volvo V60 car reviews

  1. Jalon Gerhold 2024-10-23

The car experienced a persistent issue with power loss, which was addressed by rebuilding the engine at 29k miles. However, the issue persisted due to pre-detonation of spark plugs, which caused the timing to retard and resulted in power loss. This was a safety concern, especially when merging, as it occurred without warning. Despite Volvo acknowledging the issue, they claimed it would happen under certain conditions and were unhelpful in resolving the issue. A search under Volvo Drive E Clicking provides more information. After reaching out to the CEO, the defective motor was finally replaced at 39k miles, and the car has been performing flawlessly since then.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with this car that I purchased about 115 months ago with the intention of using it for my new family. Unfortunately, when I went to bring my newborn home, I realized that the rear-facing car seat did not fit properly. The front passenger seat had only about 3 inches of legroom, which made it impossible to use. After realizing that the car did not meet our needs, I tried to trade it in at 7 different dealerships. However, I was disappointed to find out that the car had depreciated by more than 50%. The sticker price was $42,534, but I was only offered $20k after just 15 months. If you are considering purchasing this car, I would recommend planning on keeping it for a long time to avoid losing money.

  3. Jaycee Nitzsche 2024-08-29

Hi there, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the tires on my Volvo. As someone who has owned four Volvos in the past, I have a good basis for comparison. Unfortunately, I have found that this model seems to wear through tires much faster than my previous ones. Specifically, I have had a lot of trouble with the Continental ContiPro contact 235/45/R17 Xl tires - they seem to be the worst of the bunch. I had to replace two of them at just 14,000 miles, and another one about a month later (thank goodness for the warranty!). When I went to rotate my tires at 21,000 miles, I was told that the remaining two tires only had 2/32

If you're looking for a car that is stylish, performs well, and has seamless phone connectivity, then the V60 might not be the best fit for you. While the Bluetooth entertainment system is available, it requires the driver to physically use their phone to navigate through music selections. Additionally, the car lacks power, which could make it difficult to cross busy roads with a load of family and bags. While selecting manual shift mode can help somewhat, the shifting is still delayed, which could be problematic in emergency situations. In terms of style, the V60 may not be everyone's cup of tea. However, it's important to note that everyone has different tastes. It's worth considering all options before making a final decision.

  5. Jose Mills 2024-02-08

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my Certified Pre-Owned V60 from Cape Cod Volvo. I purchased it in June 2019 with about 45,000 miles on it and it was a solid car. However, I did encounter an issue with the engine burning out after three services later (every 10,000 as recommended) at 83,000 miles. Unfortunately, the warranty had expired and there was no clear explanation from Volvo. My only recourse was either to pay about $6,000 for a used engine to be installed, or sell. As you can imagine, the difference from what I owe on the car and what it is worth now is significant, not to mention the diagnostics, towing charges, and time and energy spent on recovering. Despite this setback, I remain hopeful and grateful for the time I had with my V60. Thank you for listening to my story.

Positive 2016 Volvo V60 car reviews

  1. Danny Fahey 2024-11-26

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 'new' Volvo! It's wonderful that you've been a loyal Volvo driver for over 20 years. This car has a great balance of fun features and safety features to keep you and your family safe. It's great that it drives like a sportster while still having plenty of room for cargo. The sound system is also fantastic. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with your V60!

  2. Kevon Pfannerstill 2024-11-14

It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your V60 with the sports package for the past 3 months and have already put 5000 miles on it! While there may be a slight hesitation after stepping on the gas, the handling and ride are very good. It's also worth noting that the V60 is much smaller than the boxy Volvo wagons of old, which can be a plus for some drivers. The back hatch is perfect for groceries or even a small dog, like your mini Aussie. However, it may not be the best fit for bikes, even with the seats down. Additionally, the legroom for backseat passengers is a bit tight, but it's great to hear that your pre-teen kids are comfortable. The front seats, on the other hand, are exceptionally comfortable. While the hi-tech and eco features may not be perfect, it's still great to have them available. It's also worth noting that the auto engine shutoff when stopped can be a bit spotty, and the MPG may be lower than expected based on EPA estimates.

  3. Haskell Mayer 2024-09-13

I've had this car for a year now and have driven over 40,000 miles. So far, I haven't had any issues with it and have only needed to pay for regular maintenance and oil changes. It's a very comfortable car and handles extremely well in the snow. The engine size is just right for me and with dynamic mode, I can easily merge onto traffic and cross streets. However, the infotainment system is starting to look dated and the navigation doesn't work as well as my phone, which I prefer to use. Overall, the build quality seems to be very well put together and there are no noises coming from inside the cabin. My only real complaint is that I wish it had better fuel economy, as I'm averaging about 26 miles per gallon with 85% highway miles.

  4. Tristin Wiza 2024-08-27

When searching for a vehicle, I prioritized safety ratings and reliability. I ultimately chose a small SUV with high safety ratings and good reliability. The model I have has decent performance - I opted for the AWD with the older 2.5 T5 and the 5sp auto. I appreciate the known reliability of the older engine, and although the newer one had better performance and fuel economy, it wasn't available in this model year. I was looking for a lightly used vehicle, and the 2015.5 model year was perfect for me because of the upgraded Sensus setup and better navigation and 'infotainment' features. The car even has a built-in wifi hotspot (it's ATT service, and free until Volvo figures out how to pass thru charges) in addition to OnCall (Volvo's version of OnStar) and Sirius traffic is free for 4 years from original sale date. The seats are very comfortable, and the Climate package ensures that everything that should be heated or cooled is done automatically. Although the storage is smallish for a wagon, it is still useful. The styling of both the outside and inside is nice - very Swedish still, which is good - I was glad to see that Geely didn't distract from that or the safety of Volvo when they purchased the company. The safety features are great - the backup cam and sensors include a cross-traffic warning, and the City Safety function is a nice feature to have.

  5. Martin Kuhn 2024-08-12

It sounds like you're really going to enjoy driving this car! It's great on gas and can even haul when you need it to. While it may not be as roomy as its big brother, it's still a great size. And if you opt for the Polestar upgrade, you'll be able to unleash the full potential of the engine while also improving your fuel economy.
