2005 Volvo V50 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V50 is the station wagon version of the Volvo S40 small family car first unveiled at the 2003 Bologna Motor Show, both assembled at Ghent, Belgium. Sharing the Volvo P1 platform with the European Ford Focus and the Mazda 3, the V50 featured interior "theatre" lighting, a floating center stack and "Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture".

Overview

The V50 T5 AWD featured all-wheel drive and a straight-5 2.5 litre petrol engine, with a light pressure turbocharger, four valves per cylinder and a DOHC design with variable camshaft timing — providing 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp) and 320 N⋅m (236 lb⋅ft) of torque. Diesel options were available in Europe, including a 2.4 Litre turbocharged D5 diesel engine which provided 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft) of torque.

Within the United States, Volvo limited sales of the V50 PZEV cars to states where it was required, including California, Florida, Vermont, Connecticut, Arizona, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Oregon, Maine, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Mexico and Washington.

Volvo Cars Special Vehicle produced a concept car based on the V50, the V50 SV, whose engine produces 340 hp (254 kW), and debuted at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Common 2005 Volvo V50 problems

The Volvo V50, introduced in 2004, is known for its impeccable build quality and few significant problems reported by owners. However, there are some common issues that potential buyers should be aware of, particularly with the 2005 model.

  • Electrical system issues: Some 2005 Volvo V50 owners have reported experiencing various electrical system malfunctions, such as the horn honking, high beams flashing, hazard lights activating, and doors locking and unlocking while driving.
  • Fuel and power steering pipe leaks: The 2005 Volvo V50 has been recalled for potential leaks in the fuel pipes and power steering pipes. These leaks can lead to more severe issues, such as engine failure or loss of steering control, and should be addressed promptly.
  • Faulty handbrakes: The V50 has also been recalled for faulty handbrakes, which can fail to hold the vehicle securely, increasing the risk of it rolling away.
  • Faulty cooling fans: Another issue that has led to recalls is faulty cooling fans, which can cause the engine to overheat and potentially lead to engine damage or failure.
  • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): If you're considering a diesel-powered V50, be aware that some models may be equipped with a DPF, which can become blocked and require replacement.
  • Timing belt and tensioners: For five-cylinder T5, D4, or D5-engined V50s, it's crucial to ensure that the timing belt and tensioners have been changed every four years or 60,000 miles. Failure to do so could result in a costly engine repair bill.
  • Sunroof drains: Clogged sunroof drains can lead to wet interior carpets, so it's essential to check and clean them regularly.
  • PCV system: A simple test can confirm whether the PCV system is functioning correctly, and it's a common maintenance area for the V50.
  • Suspension issues: Some owners have reported clicking noises from the suspension, which could indicate that the lower suspension arms and drop links need replacing.
  • Tire quality: When inspecting a potential V50 purchase, it's a good idea to check the tires' brand and condition. Premium brands are generally a good sign, while non-premium tires may indicate that costs have been cut in other areas.

While Volvos are known for their durability and ability to handle high mileage well, it's essential to ensure that the vehicle has been properly maintained and that any outstanding recalls have been addressed.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-10-01
  • VIN: YV1MW382852
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2005 VOLVO V50 HAS INTERMITTENT STARTING ISSUES. THE ENGINE CRANKS AND FUEL PUMP CAN BE HEARD WHEN KEY IS TURNED IN IGNITION BUT THE ENGINE DOES NOT TURN OVER/START. AFTER 10-15 (SOMETIMES MORE) ATTEMPTS AT STARTING THE VEHICLE, FUEL PRESSURE APPEARS TO BUILD SLOWLY WITH EACH ATTEMPT AND THE ENGINE WILL SOMETIMES START. IF THE VEHICLE DOES START IT IS OPERABLE WITHOUT ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS AND CAN BE DRIVEN NORMALLY. THE CAR WILL RE-START WITHOUT ISSUE IF THE ENGINE HAS RUN WITHIN A FEW HOURS OF THE ATTEMPT. AFTER 24-36 HOURS OF BEING OFF THE VEHICLE WILL HAVE DIFFICULTY STARTING AGAIN. I BELIEVE THE PEM (PUMP ELECTRONICS MODULE) IS FAULTY IN MY VEHICLE - VOLVO ISSUED RECALL 190 TO ADDRESS THIS BUT NOW REFUSES TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE OR PROVIDE ME WITH DOCUMENTATION SUFFICIENT TO ENSURE ME THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED BY THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN.

  • VIN: YV1MJ682352
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: 2005 VOLVO V50 HAS A CHRONIC LIGHT PROBLEM IE THE DIM LIGHT SETTING DOES NOT PROVIDE ENOUGH LIGHT TO DRIVE SAFELY ON RURAL ROADS IN THE "DIM" SETTING. MAXIMUM FORWARD VISIBILITY IN THE DIM SETTING IS BETWEEN 48' AND 55' THIS IS MADE MORE HAZARDOUS BY THE DARK LINE THAT APPEARS AT THE 48' TO 55' LINE THIS EFFECTUALLY BLOCKS VISION PAST THIS POINT. MY VOLVO V-50 HAS SPENT 44 DAYS AT MODESTO EUROPEAN (VOLVO DEALER) TO TRY TO REPAIR THIS DEFECT AFTER THE LAST TWO TRIPS I/WE WERE TOLD THAT THIS IS THE BEST THAT IT CAN BE REPAIRED. IF THIS IS THE BEST IT CAN BE REPAIRED THIS CAR SHOULD BE TAKEN OFF THE ROAD ASAP. THERE IS A STRONG POSSIBILITY THAT ONE COULD HIT A PEDESTRIAN, DISABLED VEHICLE, DEER ,ELK ,ETC AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 55 MPH. WE HAVE A CAR THAT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AFTER DARK WHAT IS VOLVO THINKING. *NM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-02-01
  • VIN: YV1MJ682152
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: REMOTE KEY TRANSMITTER ON 2005+ VOLVO V50 IS A PERSONAL SAFETY HAZARD AND POTENTIAL SWINDLE FOR VOLVO ON SELLING REPLACEMENT TRANSMITTERS. THE DESIGN IS SUCH THAT THE KEY WILL INADVERTENTLY FALL OFF THE VALET KEY (WHICH INCIDENTALLY CANNOT BE USED TO START THE CAR). THE LATCHING MECHANISM IS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY (+/- 3MM) TO THE KEY RING IT WOULD NORMALLY SIT ON AND WHEN THE KEY RING BUMPS AGAINST THE LATCH IN YOUR POCKET OR PURSE, IT CAN PARTIALLY DISLODGE KEY AND WHEN YOU PULL IT FROM POCKET, THE KEY GOES FLYING ELSEWHERE UNKNOWN TO THE OWNER. NO THIS COMPLAINT DOESN'T INVOLVE DIRECT PERSONAL INJURY, BUT IMAGINE LOSING YOUR KEY IN AN UNSAFE PLACE OR SITUATION AND HAVING TO CRAWL AROUND AND TRY TO FIND THE THING. DELPHI IS THE MANUFACTURER OF THE KEYFOB. THE USE TESTING OF THIS KEY MUST HAVE BEEN NON-EXISTENT AS I HAVE LOST ONE KEY WITHIN 60 DAYS OF OWNERSHIP (COST ME $60, COULD HAVE BEEN MORE SINCE DEALER NORMALLY CHARGES 2 HOURS LABOR TO PROGRAM KEY). NOW I HAVE MINE HOOKED TOGETHER WITH SAFETY WIRE. VOLVO WILL NOT RESPOND TO REPEATED EMAILS, CALLS. DEALER WON'T ADDRESS ISSUE AT ALL. I CANNOT BE THE ONLY PERSON. MY WIFES KEY DOES THE SAME THING. I HAVE SEARCHED INTERNET FORUMS TO FIND OTHER USES WITH SIMILAR ISSUES ON OTHER VOLVO KEYS. IT'S JUST A SHAME VOLVO WON'T FIX WHAT ISN'T RIGHT. *NM

Negative 2005 Volvo V50 car reviews

  1. Kurtis Parisian 2024-10-11

We were aware that this was a small wagon when we purchased it, but we found it to be quite cramped! If you're looking for a vehicle with more cargo space than a sedan but less than an SUV, this would be a functional and enjoyable vehicle to drive. However, with two toddlers and all their belongings, it turned out to be smaller than we had anticipated. Additionally, the maintenance and repair costs for this vehicle are quite high, with a single tire replacement costing $200! We've also experienced some reliability issues with the electrical system. As a result, we're already considering trading it in for a different vehicle...

  2. Lavon Strosin 2024-09-27

The V50 model from 2005 has some issues with power and acceleration, which can be frustrating for drivers. Despite efforts to address these issues, they have persisted for over two years. In addition, there are some concerns with the horn, keys, and visibility. However, with proper maintenance and care, these issues can be managed and the car can still provide reliable transportation.

  3. Jesus Effertz 2024-05-21

Hi there! I noticed that you're considering a Volvo to replace your V40. While the car has okay power, it's important to note that maintenance can be quite expensive after the warranty period. Additionally, the interior can be a bit cramped for adults. However, if you're specifically looking for the Volvo brand, it's worth noting that it may not be the safest option out there despite their marketing campaign. There are definitely better cars available on the market, but ultimately the decision is up to you. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with!

  4. Ryder Klocko 2024-02-06

My car has been going into the shop multiple times a year for warranty repairs. Unfortunately, it has been in the shop more than I have been able to drive it. Some of the many issues include a major fuel leak warning, a sunroof drain routed to the driver's feet (resulting in a flood), broken keys (which actually broke apart), air conditioning that suddenly spews hot air and then suddenly goes back to cold air (only on one side), broken sunroof motor, squeaky brakes (even though they are new), and a broken antenna in the steering wheel that disables your key and strands you with no way to turn your car on. This resulted in a subsequent tow (by Volvo) that punctured the oil pan and led to finger-pointing by the Volvo Customer Service and Service Reps.

Positive 2005 Volvo V50 car reviews

  1. Ahmed Jenkins 2025-01-05

I've had my V50 for about 8 months now and I still look forward to driving it home from work each day. The engine is responsive, the handling is great, and the feel is solid. I test drove many other makes such as Audi, BMW, and VW, but their lease options couldn't even come close to the value of the Volvo. I have most of the options except for the sport package and navigation. I highly recommend the upgraded stereo, it sounds fantastic. So far, I have no complaints, except that there isn't much room for storing things. Best of all, I feel like I'm driving a bank vault!!

  2. Gardner Beahan 2024-10-25

Versatile vehicle with great acceleration and handling with optional DTSC. With nearly 3000 miles overall MPG is 26 with long haul highway MPG at 70 MPH of 33+. T-tech fabric is the best non-leather seating material I've used. Bi-Xenon's are worth every cent. It's my first Volvo and has not disappointed in any way.

  3. Unique Mohr 2024-10-15

I'm so excited to share that I got this amazing car just last week and I'm falling more in love with it every day! It's incredibly comfortable, safe, and practical. I did a lot of research and looked at both wagons and SUVs, but I'm so glad I chose this one. Even though I was previously driving a Mercedes SLK 320, I haven't had to compromise on speed or handling with this car. It's a really well-made vehicle with a lot of thought put into safety features. I opted for the base model and it has every feature I wanted, at a price point that's not much different from the Japanese wagons I considered. I'm really happy with my choice and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and stylish vehicle.

  4. Damon Homenick 2024-10-03

I love this car! It's surprisingly roomy, and with the Premium and Sports Packages, it's very nicely equipped. You can really feel the quality and safety features of the car. The crisp handling and European ride were exactly what we were looking for. We replaced an SUV (Land Rover Discovery), and I don't miss it at all, especially the hefty weekly gas bill!

  5. Elroy Carroll 2024-10-02

You've only had it for less than 3 weeks and already put 800km on it. The car is very stable on the highway and handles corners really well. The handling is good too. The solid doors and B-pillars, along with lots of safety features, make you feel safe and confident while driving. The interior is modern and roomy, with ergonomics in mind. The exterior dimensions are just right for city driving and tight parking spaces.
