1999 Acura Tl problems
The Acura TL is a car that was manufactured by Acura, the luxury division of Honda. It was introduced in 1995 to replace the Acura Vigor and was badged for the Japanese-market from 1996 to 2000 as the Honda Inspire and from 1996 to 2004 as the Honda Saber. The TL was Acura's best-selling model until it was outsold by the MDX in 2007. In 2005, it ranked as the second best-selling luxury sedan in the United States behind the BMW 3 Series, but sales decreased after the 2008 model year. Four generations of the Acura TL were produced, with the final fourth generation TL premiering in 2008 as a 2009 model and ending production in 2014, when it was replaced together with the TSX by the TLX.
First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)
The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.
The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. There were minimal styling differences between the two, but the 3.2 TL had larger tires despite the 2.5 TL's more sporty marketing. Moreover, the added power in the 3.2 TL gave it better acceleration. Both engines were mounted in a front-rear, or longitudinal position. This contrasted with the more typical transverse engine mount style, and was intended to provide better weight distribution and reduce nose dive. The engine mount design resulted in an elongated hood for the first generation TL, a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase, fitting for a near-luxury car. The inline-5 engine in the 2.5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.
The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.
The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup. Like its predecessor, the Vigor, this generation TL was a 4-door pillared hardtop, with frameless windows.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-01-20
- VIN: 19UUA565XXA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: At random times the engine dies while driving the car which has resulted in unsafe handling and loss of power steering while in traffic conditions. I was unaware of a recall (02V120000) until recently. I have owned this car sense 2002 and the current millage is 109,000 miles. I contacted Findlay Acura in Henderson NV. and they stated there was no recall on the ignition switch which I have recently found that there was as noted above. Can you contact the Dealer on my behalf as I am under the impression that the dealer is suppose to replace the defective part at no cost as it does cause an unsafe condition when it occurs. Engine just dies without warning. There has not been an independent assessment of the condition as it occurs on a random basis and of course, never occurs when you want it to.

- Summary: MY VEHICLE HAS A RECALL FOR THE SRS AIRBAG SYSTEM I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT ON THIS WEBSITE. I CALLED ACURA AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE SRS AIRBAG SYSTEM CANNOT BE REPLACED BECAUSE DUE TO THE AGE OF THE VEHICLE ALL PARTS ARE DISCONTINUED. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE NOW THE SRS DASHBOARD LIGHT IS ON WHICH MEANS THAT THE AIRBAG SYSTEM IS OFFLINE AND WILL NOT ENGAGE IF THERE IS A FRONT END COLLISION. HOW DO I GET THIS RECALL REPAIRS COMPLETED. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY PROBLEM AND I'M CONCERNED THAT I OR POSSIBLY A PASSENGER IN MY CAR MAY SUSTAIN UNNECESSARY INJURIES IF THE AIRBAG SYSTEM DOES NOT ENGAGE IN AN ACCIDENT. PLEASE ADVISE HOW TO GET THIS ISSUE REPAIRED OR REPLACED. 1999 Acura Tl recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 1999 Acura Tl.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.
- Manufacturer: HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE INTERLOCK OPERATION OF THE IGNITION SWITCH MAY NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY, MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO THE "OFF" POSITION AND REMOVE THE KEY WITHOUT SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION TO PARK.
- Consequence: IF THE DRIVER DOES NOT SHIFT TO PARK BEFORE REMOVING THE KEY AND FAILS TO ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE, THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERFORM AN INSPECTION PROCEDURE THAT CONFIRMS INTERLOCK FUNCTION. VEHICLES WILL BE UPDATED WITH A REDESIGNED INTERLOCK LEVER FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 7, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.
- Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES AND MINI VANS, THE IGNITION SWITCH MAY WEAR EXCESSIVELY AND PREVENT PROPER INTERLOCK OPERATION, MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO THE "OFF" POSITION AND REMOVE THE KEY WITHOUT SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION TO "PARK."
- Consequence: IF THE VEHICLE OPERATOR DOES NOT SHIFT TO "PARK" BEFORE REMOVING THE KEY AND FAILS TO ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE, THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERFORM AN INSPECTION PROCEDURE THAT DETERMINES THE AMOUNT OF CYLINDER BODY WEAR. IF SIGNIFICANT WEAR IS INDICATED, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE CYLINDER BODY, COLLAR, AND LATCH PLATE. IF NO SIGNS OF WEAR ARE INDICATED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LATCH PLATE WITH A REDESIGNED PART. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 8, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.
- Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SEDANS, COUPES, HATCHBACKS, AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, ELECTRICAL CONTACTS IN THE IGNITION SWITCH CAN DEGRADE DUE TO THE HIGH ELECTRICAL CURRENT PASSING THROUGH THE SWITCH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED.
- Consequence: WORN CONTACTS COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL WITHOUT WARNING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 14, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.

This is a really nice vehicle. I think it's great in all categories and an outstanding value. I would like better back-up lights and more power and performance features, but who wouldn't? These desires seem to have been satisfied in the newer TL Type-S.

I bought this car in February 1999 and it has been the best purchase I've ever made. Even after driving 138,000 miles, the car still runs smoothly and efficiently, getting an impressive 27-29 mpg on 91 octane gas. I recently replaced the Michelin Tires with Toyo Proxes, which have proven to be much better in the rain and cost $300 less. Although I've had a few minor issues, such as replacing the battery, HID bulb ($110 from Osram-Sylvania, $200 at dealers), and EGR valve, the only major problem I've encountered was the rearview mirror popping off due to the heat in Central Florida.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to reach out because I've been having a bit of trouble with my car lately. I bought it almost 5 years ago and it's been running great until now. Unfortunately, while I was driving on a busy road, the engine shut down on me. I'm not sure what the issue is, but I think it might be the ignition switch. The battery is almost brand new, so I don't think that's the problem. I'm hoping that there might be a recall on the ignition switch so that I don't have to pay out of pocket. Thank you so much for your help!

I decided to take a spin in a few different cars. One of them was a 3.2 TL '99, which was a lot of fun to drive for about 15 minutes. It had a sleek silver exterior and black leather interior. The wheel and pedals had a Honda touch, which was pretty impressive for a Japan-made car. The acceleration was good, and the tip-tronic feature added to the fun. However, the suspension could use some work, as it felt more like a Honda than a luxury car. I was able to reach 100 mph, and the car felt very stable, even though it didn't feel that fast. Overall, it was a good car, but it's worth noting that this was back in 1999, so they may have made significant improvements since then. By the way, I found the Acura Dealer at Stevens Creek (SJ,CA) to be a bit pushy.

I bought this car new and have taken great care of it, following the manual for maintenance. It has now clocked 197,000 miles and still gets an impressive 28mpg. While there have been a few minor issues, such as some dash lights not working and a door lock relay needing replacement, the engine has never been opened and the only non-maintenance task I've had to do was to clean the EGR valve at 80k. I now do this myself, which takes about two hours. I would recommend switching to Toyo Proxes TPT tires, which cost less than $500 and last for 50k miles.
