2006 Volvo V50 problems
The Volvo V50 is the station wagon version of the Volvo S40 small family car first unveiled at the 2003 Bologna Motor Show, both assembled at Ghent, Belgium. Sharing the Volvo P1 platform with the European Ford Focus and the Mazda 3, the V50 featured interior "theatre" lighting, a floating center stack and "Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture".
Overview
The V50 T5 AWD featured all-wheel drive and a straight-5 2.5 litre petrol engine, with a light pressure turbocharger, four valves per cylinder and a DOHC design with variable camshaft timing — providing 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp) and 320 N⋅m (236 lb⋅ft) of torque. Diesel options were available in Europe, including a 2.4 Litre turbocharged D5 diesel engine which provided 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft) of torque.
Within the United States, Volvo limited sales of the V50 PZEV cars to states where it was required, including California, Florida, Vermont, Connecticut, Arizona, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Oregon, Maine, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Mexico and Washington.
Volvo Cars Special Vehicle produced a concept car based on the V50, the V50 SV, whose engine produces 340 hp (254 kW), and debuted at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Market Association trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Common 2006 Volvo V50 problems
The Volvo V50, produced in 2006, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues range from electrical problems to mechanical faults, affecting various components of the vehicle.
- High-Pitched Sound When Steering: An odd noise, similar to a high-pitched sound, can be heard when turning the steering wheel. This problem is caused by the air conditioning accumulator coming into contact with the power steering pump. The solution is to secure the accumulator to prevent it from coming into contact with the pump, which eliminates the noise.
- Clunking While Driving: When applying the brakes, a clunking noise may be heard from the front of the car. This issue is typically found in V50s equipped with 16-inch wheels, where the front brake calliper support brackets are vulnerable to failure. Replacing the worn-out brake pads and installing tougher support brackets can solve this problem.
- Sudden Clutch Problems: The clutch may suddenly stop working, especially at high speeds. This problem is due to a recall caused by a weak rod connecting the clutch master cylinder to the clutch pedal. The solution is to replace the clutch master cylinder with an upgraded version that has a stronger metal push rod.
- Knocking From Engine: A knocking sound from the front of the car, accompanied by the check engine light being illuminated and occasional difficulty starting the engine, may indicate a failing timing belt and tensioner. Replacing these components can prevent catastrophic engine failure.
- Multiple Electrical Issues: Owners have reported various electrical problems, including issues with windows, door locks, and warning lights. These problems may be due to under-engineering and a lack of robustness in the electrical system.
- Air Conditioning Condenser Failure: The air conditioning condenser is known to wear out, causing the climate control system to blow only hot air. Regular maintenance and replacement of the condenser can prevent this issue.
- Suspension Issues: The lower suspension arms and drop links may need replacing, causing clicking noises when rocking the car from side to side.
- Fuel and Power Steering Pipe Leaks: The V50 has been recalled for potential leaks in the fuel pipes and power steering pipes, which can lead to serious problems if not addressed.
- Handbrake and Cooling Fan Faults: The handbrake and cooling fans have also been subject to recalls due to faulty components.
- Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Issues: Diesel V50s may experience issues with the DPF, especially if the car is only used for short trips. Regular long drives can help prevent these problems, but replacement of the DPF may be necessary in some cases.
- Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported transmission issues, including problems with the automatic gearbox requiring regular fluid and filter changes .
These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and inspections for Volvo V50 owners. Being aware of these issues can help owners address them promptly and ensure the longevity and safety of their vehicles.

WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-07-25
- VIN: YV1MJ682862
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW AND CAME EQUIPPED WITH PIRELLI TIRES. WE FOUND THEM FLAT ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS (AT LEAST 5) AND HAD ONE FLAT WHILE DRIVING. NO CRASHES THUS FAR. WE THOUGHT IT TO BE A FAULT OF THE TIRES. NO PUNCTURES WERE EVER FOUND WHEN TAKEN TO BE REPAIRED. WE PUT ONE DUNLOP ON THE CAR THINKING THAT IF IT STAYED PROPERLY INFLATED, THEN SURELY THE PROBLEM WOULD BE THE PIRELLI BRANDED TIRES. THE NEXT FLAT WE HAD (LAST WEEK) WAS ON THE DUNLOP. INSPECTION REVEALED NO DAMAGE THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED IT TO LOSE AIR PRESSURE. WE SUSPECT THE WHEELS ARE POORLY OR IMPROPERLY MADE AND THAT THIS CAUSES THE FLATS. LOSING PRESSURE IN A TIRE FOR ANY REASON CAN CAUSE A CRASH. WE HAVE HEARD THAT VOLVO HAS AN "UNOFFICIAL RECALL" ON THE WHEELS, BUT CANNOT FIND ANY INFORMATION ON THIS. THE ODI ID NUMBER : 10437484 HAS BEEN ASSIGNED TO A PREVIOUS COMPLAINT ON THIS SAME VEHICLE. *TR

HAD THIS COMPONENT LOCKED UP, STEERING CONTROL WOULD BE LOST AND RISK OF A CRASH WOULD ESCALATE. THE REPAIR WAS AT MY EXPENSE ($786). THESE SAFETY RELATED STEERING AND SUSPENSION PARTS SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN 58,000 MILES. THE CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE OWNERS MANUAL SERVICE GUIDE. *KB

If you're looking for a flexible vehicle for a small family, this one is definitely worth considering. The power is solid, even with auto, although it doesn't feel as quick as I expected. The seats are super comfortable, and the new cloth/suede material is very nice and seems to be more durable than old Volvo cloth/vinyl interiors. While the gas tank is a little small compared to other Volvos, we still average 27 mpg in mixed driving, with the best being 30. We already have snow on the ground, and the DTSC keeps it sure-footed, even without AWD. I'm not convinced that AWD is worth the extra cost, especially considering the loss in mpg.

I love this car! It's the smallest of the three Volvos I've owned (previous cars: 245DL wagon and an 850 sedan), but by far the most fun. I wanted a car with sports car-like handling and acceleration, and I also needed space in the back to accommodate, for instance, a couple of bales of peat moss. And guess what? I got it all! The car flies--merging onto the highway is really fun now--and its power is evident at low RPMs, too. I have the brushed aluminum interior and it's very cool. The only downside is that there's not a great deal of storage space up front, and the back seats are a little tight for normal-sized adults, but we have an SUV for long trips. Overall, it's a great driver's car!

The T5 is definitely a must-have! I test drove both the 2.4 and the T5, and the T5 completely blew the other away. The car has excellent pick up that will leave even the most aggressive cab drivers in the dust. The sleek inside and outside styling make it a real head-turner. It feels sturdy and sporty, and it's definitely not your father's Volvo. Fremont Volvo in Fremont, CA made us a fabulous lease deal, so we couldn't be happier!

After a trip to the vet with the dog, cat and kid in my Mustang, I realized that I needed a sport wagon. I looked at fully loaded versions of the V50, BMW 3 Wagon, and Audi A3. In the end, I chose the V50 because it had the best combination of horsepower, torque, and price. The ride and handling are great, and the build quality and gas mileage are impressive. The navigation system, which can be controlled by the steering wheel, is awesome.

I need to replace my Volvo 240DL wagon and BMW328i. The V50 is a great option as it combines the best of both worlds. It's spacious enough to accommodate my family and also has a sporty feel to it, making it enjoyable to drive. Although it doesn't have the same level of acceleration and handling as my 1999 328i, it does come with all the latest electronic and computer gadgets. As someone who has always driven a manual transmission, I was initially hesitant about the Geartronics. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find it quite acceptable. It allows me to slow down the car and gain more power when driving up to Lake Tahoe. With a decent mileage of 25 mpg after 6K miles, it's even better than the BMW. I'll be thrilled if it proves to be more reliable than my previous car.

I have experienced repeated issues with the check engine light, engine shutdowns while driving, and an ignition key that cannot be removed. Despite purchasing a Volvo for its reputation of safety and reliability, I have found it to be quite expensive to maintain and unreliable. From day one, the engine light was on and two months in, the ignition key became stuck. At 50,000 miles, I had to replace all tires and the alignment was not properly done by the Volvo dealer. At 85,000 miles, the right rear bearing needed to be replaced. At 100,000 miles, the engine light came on and the engine shut down while driving, requiring multiple trips to the dealer. The problem disappeared on its own after 125,000 miles. At 145,000 miles, I experienced more issues with the ignition key. As a result, I am now considering selling the vehicle.

This car may not be the best choice for those who are looking for a hassle-free driving experience. It has been reported to have some electrical issues, and the premium audio system can be troublesome at times. Additionally, the navigation system can be quite sophisticated, which may make it difficult to troubleshoot. It is important to note that Volvo's customer care may not always be as sensitive as one would hope, especially if you find yourself frequently visiting the dealership for repairs. It is also worth mentioning that Volvo cars may not receive top ratings in safety anymore. However, there are still many great features that make this car worth considering.

When this car is functioning properly, it is absolutely delightful. I adore the Scandinavian style, but unfortunately, the quality has been a bit of a disappointment.
