The Volvo S90 is an executive sedan manufactured and marketed by Swedish automaker Volvo Cars since 2016. Its estate variant is called the Volvo V90.

Models

For the model year of 2017 (the first model year), a short and long wheelbase sedan as well as an estate model were made available. For 2017, the short wheelbase model was sold in North America and Europe, while the long wheelbase model was primarily sold in China. Volvo has hinted at possible coupe variants, but not until at least 2020 as the Polestar 1.

S90

Before its reveal, the first official pictures of the S90 were shown on Wednesday, 2 December 2015. The S90 was unveiled to the public in January 2016, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The S90's design was well received, winning the Production Car Design of the Year award for 2015.

While not a direct successor to the second-generation S80, the S90 replaces it as the flagship sedan in Volvo's lineup. Several trim levels are available, ranging from Momentum to Inscription. In July 2016, an optional, cosmetic R-Design package was announced. A long wheelbase version was announced for availability in the United States.

For the 2022 model year in the United Kingdom, the range was limited to the S90 Recharge, a mild-hybrid sedan. The S90 Recharge was limited to Plus and Ultimate trim levels with the T8 AWD mild-hybrid engine, a 2.0-litre 455-horsepower (339 kW; 461 PS) 4-cylinder available with all-wheel-drive only.

Negative 2022 Volvo S90 car reviews

  1. Alford D'Amore 2025-03-20

We purchased a 2018 S90 T8 inscription with every option, which had only 13k miles on it. However, after driving it for 6k miles, we experienced several issues. The rear suspension collapsed once and generated errors in the instrument cluster twice. The infotainment system randomly restarted multiple times, and the voice command button got stuck, which was quite frustrating. Additionally, single lines of pixels disappeared from the LCD instrument cluster twice. Although all these issues disappeared once the car was shut off and restarted, we found it unacceptable for a flagship model of any make. Therefore, we decided to trade it in after only 4 months of use.

  2. Hyman Nolan 2025-01-21

I recently purchased a Volvo S-90 T-5, but unfortunately experienced some issues with the computer system. Despite having only 309 miles on the car, the door lock malfunctioned and required a computer update. Even after having it reset at the dealership, the system continued to malfunction with various issues. As a result, I am hesitant to take my new car out of town. It is important for Volvo to perfect their computer system before promoting it further.

Make sure the sales representative goes over all the technology with you and that you understand the differences between Japanese and European automakers. These differences are quite noticeable.

  4. Leo Adams 2024-11-19

To review, I want to mention that the seats used to be great, but they have changed since 2017, possibly due to being manufactured in China. They made some changes to increase the backseat legroom, which completely altered the feel of the seat. Personally, I am not a fan of the new design and I am looking forward to replacing it. I had assumed that the seats would be the same as the 2017 model when I purchased this vehicle.

  5. Heber Flatley 2024-06-22

Within the past 12 months, I had to take my S90 T8 in for service three times due to the rear suspension collapsing onto the back tires. Unfortunately, it happened for the fourth time this weekend and I had to give the car back to the dealership under the Lemon law. It's really disappointing to have experienced this issue multiple times, especially since it affects the safety of the vehicle.

Positive 2022 Volvo S90 car reviews

  1. Ed Harber 2025-03-28

I recently purchased a 2020 S90 R-Design, and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. Despite owning a variety of luxury vehicles in the past, including Bentleys, Lambos, S600s, S63s, 911s, Panameras, 7 Series Range Rovers, and more, I had never considered buying a Volvo until I saw an S90 driving down the freeway. The exterior styling/design caught my eye, and the following day I drove to our local Volvo dealership to test drive the S90 Inscription and S90 R-Design. I ended up purchasing the R-Design because I prefer a sportier look, and I have not been disappointed. The car drives and handles incredibly well, and the interior styling/design is top-notch. The safety features and amenities are also impressive, and the Pilot Assist operates like a dream. I constantly catch people staring at the vehicle while driving, and the value is unbeatable. The back seats have amazing leg room, and if you want more power, RaceChip offers 3 choices of a plug & play tuner that can be controlled using an app on your smart phone. I have used a RaceChip brand tuner before on my Panamera 4S, and it has never disappointed me. It's a German company and, in my opinion, the best tuner on the market. They offer 7 different driving tunes, all controlled by your smart phone. If you need to take the vehicle into service, you can simply unplug it and throw it in your backpack, and it's impossible for a technician to detect that one was ever installed.Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this vehicle. It is the best car I have ever owned, not only in terms of performance, but also in styling and value. The car looks and feels like it should cost much more than it does. In fact, I loved it so much that I went back to Volvo the next day and purchased a 2020 S60 Inscription with every available option. The salesman drove it to my house and I left it parked under our Porte-Cache with the keys on our front step and a note. My wife was thrilled when she came home to her surprise, especially when she realized that it is shorter and smaller than the S99, which she prefers. I can't remember the last time she was this excited about a new vehicle. If you're in the market for a new car, I highly recommend sitting in one of Volvo's completely redesigned models and test driving them all. Make sure to try out the factory-equipped driving modes, take it on the freeway, and experience the variety of tech and safety features. I promise you won't be disappointed, especially when comparing pricing to Volvo's German competitors. The value is truly exceptional. Once you drive one, you'll want to buy one, because these cars are simply amazing!

  2. Enrique Jacobson 2025-03-27

The silver car with the blonde interior looks fantastic! I absolutely love the Thor's hammer headlights and the wide stance of the vehicle with the big 19' Pirellis. There are lots of extras on it, which are functional and work super well. However, the ride can be a concern at times, as it can be very hard and not as sophisticated as a car at this price point should feel. The gas mileage is excellent and it feels great on the road. I LOVE the backseat legroom and the extra right passenger side buttons that control the front right seat and sunroof. The car LOOKS serious, which is something I love and I've received many compliments on it. The pick up on this super well designed 4-cylinder turbo is beyond impressive. I also love the stereo (standard) and the 360 camera. At times, the sensors for parking and other safety functions seem a little too sensitive but I'd rather have that than the opposite. The seat comfort is FANTASTIC, both in the front and back. The ventilation and climate control are superb. The interior materials on all surfaces are FAR SUPERIOR to many makes of car. There are no rattles, squeaks or creaks throughout. I'm very happy with my S90, which is an upgrade from my 2016 S60 Inscription sedan. I have no regrets. Volvo is ROCKING the automotive world in many ways!

  3. Dominic Kautzer 2025-01-26

I'm really pleased with my first Volvo! It's much better than my 2018 Audi. The touch screen is so much easier to use than all the draw pads and knobs, which I found to be a pain. Everything is simple and intuitive. The auto pilot is the best out there. I considered waiting for the 2019 Lexus ES300h, which I also owned when it first came out and loved the gas mileage. However, I'm tired of how Lexus keeps making their grill more and more crazy - horizontal, vertical, etc. The Volvo has an elegant look, and the back seat has even more room than the Lexus. It drives nicely and has a huge sunroof. The rear seat has buttons to move the front seat forward, and can also adjust the sunroof shade. Both rear seats fold down for extra trunk space. The trunk opens with your foot and closes automatically. In addition to the touch screen, which behaves like an iPad with swiping, Volvo has a great iPhone app that starts the car using On Call. It can also lock and share stats. It's much better than the Audi app that was created with weird, multiple tabs. I got the T5 for better mileage. The engine is a little noisy, but that's okay. Signing the contract was awesome. The finance office desk is actually a 3 x 4 giant screen and all you do is review and click. It's completely paperless! I was in and out in minutes and they didn't push all the extra warranties like Audi. I'm very happy with driving this luxury sedan and got a good deal on it. Thanks for reading!

  4. Lindsey Kutch 2025-01-12

I recently got a Volvo S90 T5 at a lease price that was too good to refuse, even though I usually prefer sportier cars. I must say, I got a lot of bang for my buck! This luxury car is perfect for being chauffeured around in, with a huge and comfortable rear passenger area. The driver's seat is also very pleasant and was designed by an orthopedist. The interior is elegant, with a blonde (white) finish that looks wonderful (although it needs occasional cleaning). In fact, I would say it is the most nicely appointed car I have ever owned, even compared to my previous MB and BMWs. The tech is amazing, although the touch screen can be a bit overwhelming at times. However, the Auto Assist Pilot is from the future and does much to keep you safe while also removing the tedium of stop-and-go traffic. Driving is now an 'AHHH'! The car is wonderfully solid and I would lend it to any of my family members knowing they will be safe in it. Gotta love that Swedish engineering! Although the car is not as sporty as some others, it is still powerful for a 4 cylinder and I get 25.5 mpg (better than my previous Infinity). The ride is firm and smooth, making long trips a pleasure. All in all, this car is a pleasure to ride in. If you can get a great deal on this extremely plush car, don't hesitate. (P.S. I also drove the Volvo S60 for a while. The ride and feel of the S90 is much better). {A buying note: Volvo pricing is company set and it is difficult to negotiate a lower price when visiting other dealers. There is not much wiggle room, so choose the dealership with the best service.} One year later, it is still the most comfortable car I have ever owned. It is a pleasure to take a ride in for long road trips. The seats are orthopedic and it can seat 5 people with enough backseat legroom to play football in. No more squishing upfront seat to allow backseat room. The trunk is large and deep. I love how in winter the seats and steering wheel heat up to settings automatically when the temperature is below 40 degrees. It has 3 individual temperature settings, which not even my son's Tesla S has. The Swedes made it solid and sure-footed in harsh weather. It is my go-to car in snow and slush. It has much better handling than my wife's Mercedes C Class (which isn't bad). This car is tank-like sturdy. An SUV driver already backed into my rear fender in a parking lot, and I had no major damage. I have no doubt it will do a great job protecting passengers and family in a crash. (HF). The only downside is that I still find the screen controls cumbersome and confusing. The car has only one USB port, so I had to plug in a hub to use both phone and SD music card (no biggie). I have found that the autopilot is not perfect. It will veer off the road (not follow the road lines in certain situations, with steep curves in the road at higher speeds), so keep your hands on the wheel and pay some attention (so NO napping!), but it is still a great feature 90% of the time. It is still a pleasure to take the stress out of everyday driving. I still love this car as the next evolution in driving. Two years in, I am still enjoying the ride. It is still a very comfortable, plush, and quiet car to drive.Volvo has created a fantastic car with some amazing Lux tech features. For example, I can preset the temperature like an alarm clock, so I can enjoy my preferred climate during my daily commute. However, the center panel navi-entertainment system can be a bit tiresome and not very user-friendly. Although the Nav system is 98% accurate most of the time, it does not adjust the best route for traffic and other delays. I miss my old Garmin-made system (i.e. MB). Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoy the S90's ride.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your AWD stretch near limo! It sounds like a great car, and it's even better that you were able to get it at such a great price. It's always a good feeling to get a great deal on a high-quality car. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
