1998 Volvo S90 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo S90 is an executive sedan manufactured and marketed by Swedish automaker Volvo Cars since 2016. Its estate variant is called the Volvo V90.

Models

For the model year of 2017 (the first model year), a short and long wheelbase sedan as well as an estate model were made available. For 2017, the short wheelbase model was sold in North America and Europe, while the long wheelbase model was primarily sold in China. Volvo has hinted at possible coupe variants, but not until at least 2020 as the Polestar 1.

S90

Before its reveal, the first official pictures of the S90 were shown on Wednesday, 2 December 2015. The S90 was unveiled to the public in January 2016, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The S90's design was well received, winning the Production Car Design of the Year award for 2015.

While not a direct successor to the second-generation S80, the S90 replaces it as the flagship sedan in Volvo's lineup. Several trim levels are available, ranging from Momentum to Inscription. In July 2016, an optional, cosmetic R-Design package was announced. A long wheelbase version was announced for availability in the United States.

For the 2022 model year in the United Kingdom, the range was limited to the S90 Recharge, a mild-hybrid sedan. The S90 Recharge was limited to Plus and Ultimate trim levels with the T8 AWD mild-hybrid engine, a 2.0-litre 455-horsepower (339 kW; 461 PS) 4-cylinder available with all-wheel-drive only.

Common 1998 Volvo S90 problems

The Volvo S90, produced in 1998, is known for its build quality, safety, performance, and ride comfort. However, there are some common problems that owners have reported, primarily related to the transmission and speedometer.

One common issue is related to the transmission and speedometer. The speedometer will stop working, the amber "Up" arrow on the dash and the "E" and "W" button lights by the gearshift will all flash, and the Check Engine light will illuminate. The transmission itself will also do odd things when this happens, such as hanging in first gear too long, or slipping around between gears at higher speeds. This problem is often associated with code P0500 (Vehicle Speed Sensor fault).

Another common problem is related to the transmission itself. Some owners have reported transmission failures, even at low miles. This issue is often associated with the Aisin Warner transmission, which was used in many Volvo models.

In addition to these problems, some owners have reported vibration from the rear brake rotors. This issue is common and can be addressed by replacing the brake rotors.

It's important to note that the Volvo S90 is a reliable car, but like any vehicle, it can have issues. If you're considering purchasing a Volvo S90, it's important to do your research and be aware of these common problems. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues from becoming major problems.

ON THE DATE MENTIONED ABOVE THE DRIVER WAS ON HIS WAY TO A DELIVERY APPX.150 MILES FROM HOME TERMINAL WHEN THIS PROBLEM OCCURED. THERE IS NO WAY TO ADD ANY TYPE OF TEMPORARY FIX AS THERE IS NO WAY TO BUNGEE CORD IT DOWN ANYWHERE ON THE INSIDE OR OUTSIDE OF THE HOOD, BELIEVE ME I HAVE TRIED AS THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS .I ALSO HAVE A 2000 VOLVO WHERE THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM. ALSO THERE HAS BEEN A TIME OR TWO WHEN I COULD NOT OPEN THE HOOD WHICH I FEEL COULD BE A POTENTIAL HAZARD DUE TO UNFORSEEN PROBLEM SUCH AS A ENGINE FIRE ETC.. THE TRUCK LOOKS GOOD WITHOUT THE LATCHES ON THE OUTSIDE, BUT BELIEVE ME I'VE HAD A FEW EXCITING MOMENTS FROM THE HOOD POPPING OPEN ON ME AS I'M COMING TO A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION. LUCKILY THE TIMES IT HAS HAPPENED THERE WAS NOT ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME.

Negative 1998 Volvo S90 car reviews

  1. Candelario Crist 2024-11-11

I purchased the car brand new and ensured it was serviced perfectly. Unfortunately, after replacing the timing belt, the tension unit broke, which resulted in the destruction of the new timing belt. This required an engine rebuild. Additionally, I had to replace other items such as the AC unit, computer box, transmission, two computer shift modules, and two radiators. Despite the significant amount of money I have invested in the car, I cannot afford to sell or trade it in. The car has only 136,000 miles on it. While I have spent close to $9,000.00 on these items, I remain confident in the car's potential.

  2. Heber Hermiston 2024-05-02

I've been driving my S90 for 9 years now and have enjoyed it, but unfortunately, I've had to make quite a few repairs. The body of the car has been deteriorating quickly since I bought it, and I was also hoping for better fuel economy. After reading some reviews, I think I may have gotten a lemon. However, I'm glad to hear that so many people are pleased with their Volvos. Regrettably, my experience with this car has led me to decide not to purchase another Volvo.

Positive 1998 Volvo S90 car reviews

  1. Ernesto Berge 2025-01-03

The vehicle has been extremely reliable, starting up 100% of the time. The heating and air conditioning unit is exceptional, especially in the cold Massachusetts weather. The heated seats are a great addition for the winter season, and the car warms up faster than most. As a first-time Volvo owner, I have no notable complaints. Although some minor issues have occurred, such as the horn, sunroof, emergency brake, and door handle, they were easily fixed. Recently, the car overheated due to a burst hose behind the engine, but I was able to quickly resolve the issue. Overall, the car has proven to be a speedy, reliable, and comfortable vehicle.

  2. Jerel Bogan 2024-11-13

This is definitely the best vehicle I have ever owned! I have an Infiniti I30, a Volvo 240, and a Mitsubishi Eclipse, but this car surpasses them all! I hope this car model will be reintroduced soon!

  3. Colton Fay 2024-10-20

We purchased this car as a program car back in June 2001, and it has been a reliable companion ever since. As of September 2003, it has clocked 85,000 miles, and apart from a new timing belt, serpentine belt, and a set of plugs, we have only had to change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. The car's performance and handling are outstanding, and we find the comfort and back support to be excellent. Even on long trips, we arrive feeling rested and comfortable. Although it is rated for premium fuel, we have had no problems running it on good regular gas. We expect this car to last at least 200,000 miles. It is surprising to us that it doesn't hold its value very well on the used car market, as a Volvo like ours would be a bargain for anyone.

  4. Armani Schneider 2024-10-16

I love my S90. After owning 2 240DL's, I wanted a step up in the Volvo family and I got it! I have driven this car for 4 years and I still enjoy cruising with it. The only downside is that the gas mileage could be better.

  5. Michel Koss 2024-09-08

Pluses - Extremely smooth, quiet and comfortable ride; small turning radius; very strong, quick to accelerate and reliable engine. Negatives - Electronics unreliable on various features (seat, antenna, fuel oxygen, some engine component and sensor wiring; air conditioning develops problems on regular basis and needs frequent expensive repair. brake pads and components wear out frequently. Bad front seat drink console. Car needs very regular TLC/service maintenance to maintain the quality ride experienced. Parts and service can be expensive. Very much liked the car and features just not the expenses required to maintain the frequent services and expensive air conditioner service.
